great book.......2007-03-24
This is a great book . I have all the Benoit books and dvds. I think this is the best of the Benoit books. There is so much info in these books it's not right out front , it's between the lines but be assured its there. Tracking is regional but the Whitetail info is not. I have learned more about mature Whitetails from the Benoit books and dvds than any other source. Larry's the man no doubt but Lanny Benoit may be the best pure deer hunter alive. Theres a little horn tooting in the book but as someone once said " If you can do it it ain't braggin ". I have Hal Bloods book too it is also very very good. If you buy just one book on tracking buy this one or Hals.
Average Book........2004-11-02
The book does a good job outlining the tracking methods that the Benoits use to consistently harvest large bucks. There are also several interesting stories of deer hunting adventures within the book.
These tracking methods are regional in nature and not very useful in the midwest where I primarily hunt. For anyone who hunts from a stand, this book will be a dissapointment.
I read the book from my local library rather than purchasing it and I am glad that I did.
Overall, it is a good read but not worth the money unless you hunt in the northeast like the Benoits.
If you are stump sitter, this book is not for you.......2003-02-04
If you track or stalk deer then you can learn a lot from this book. The Benoit's are quite remarkable with their year over year successes. However, if you are a stand hunter or hunt in private land areas that don't allow tresspassers then this book is basically worthless other than the nice pictures in it.
Tracking Big Bucks on Snowy Days.......2003-01-28
This is one of the best and most unique whitetail hunting books I've read. The classic and now out-of-print "How to Bag the Biggest Buck of Your Life," did a great job of describing the Benoit tracking method. This newest book is even better.
"Big Bucks the Benoit Way" is an excellent presentation of how the Benoits hunt. The Benoits are almost exclusively trackers, and they base their techniques on what their vast experience has proven to work best: not on the theories of others. This independent thinking makes this a very refreshing book, and their dozens of 200-pound plus bucks prove that they know what they are doing.
This book is loaded with great photos of big bucks and the Benoits in their trademark green and black wool jackets. There's plenty of shots of sagging meat poles, the deep woods on snowy days, and the tracks and rubs of big bucks.
Most valuable though, is the great information on how the Benoits find, identify, and then follow the track of a heavy buck until they successfully bag him. While few of us will ever be so spectacularly successful using these methods, all of us can learn from this book. I've successfully used these same Benoit methods to track down and bag trophy bucks from Montana to Wisconsin.
Hunters who enjoy this book share a kinship in understanding the magic of the deep woods and a fresh tracking snow and the smoking hot track of a big buck. If you are that type of hunter, you will like this book.

Book Description
Kino lives on a farm on the side of a mountain in Japan. His friend, Jiya, lives in a fishing village below. Everyone, including Kino and Jiya, has heard of the big wave. No one suspects it will wipe out the whole village and Jiya's family, too. As Jiya struggles to overcome his sorrow, he understands it is in the presence of danger that one learns to be brave, and to appreciate how wonderful life can be.
The famous story of a Japanese boy who must face life after escaping the tidal wave destruction of his family and village.

11 year old review.......2007-03-15
The Big Wave is a book about two families that live in Japan and one BIG wave!
Kino a Japanese boy lives in the "midst of danger" with the ocean in front of him and a volcano behind him. Jya, Kino's friend lives on the ground and Kino lives on a mountin. When the big wave comes Jya's family gets wiped out and Jya has to live with Kino. This book fast-forwards from Jya's childhood to his early adulthood and I recommend it to everyone. I recommend it to everyone because I liked to read about a different place.
"The Big Wave" by Pearl S. Buck.......2007-03-11
Well told story to aid children in dealing with disappointment, fear, death. Beautifully illustrates the purpose of life.
The Big Wave.......2005-07-12
This book taught a life lesson. When bad happens, there are good people willing to help make things better. This was a good book. I am taking English 324 Literature for Children with Professor Roger D. Samples, he is a wonderful teacher.
accepting the grief after a tsunami.......2005-01-06
I read this book many years ago, and have been waiting for the right moment to read it to my child. This week, while we are absorbing the 12/26/2004 tsunami in South Asia, I deemed the moment right.
The story is set in Japan at some time in the past, when the farmers and fishermen in the community are following the paths their fathers and grandfathers set. We see the story through the eyes of Kino who lives on a mountain farm, and learns about the sea through his friendship with Jiya, who lives "in the last house in the row of houses toward the ocean, and [whose] house [does] not have a window toward the sea" because, as Jiya tells Kino, "the sea is our enemy." Kino is relieved that he does not live near the sea, but his father reminds him of the great volcano, twenty miles away, and tells him that they "must learn to live with danger."
The storyline is simple, almost inevitable. A volcano erupts under the sea and causes a tsunami, which sweeps away the fishing village by the sea. Many lives are lost. As the survivors slowly recover, and Kino's friend Jiya starts to accept life again, Kino asks his father all the questions that children need to ask after a natural disaster. His father's answers each question with patience and wisdom, in a manner open-ended enough so that the reader (or reader and parent) can pause and talk about their own beliefs and feelings. Or the reader can turn the page and stay absorbed in this well-crafted story.
My only disappointment with my paperback edition (HarperCollins, 1986, ISBN 0-06-440171-5) is that it left out the famous woodblock prints by the 19th century Japanese artists Hokusai and Hiroshige. I pored over these illustrations as a child and immediately recognized them when I saw them in my library copy. Pearl Buck selected each individual print to allow her readers to see the beauty of Japan, and they form an integral part of the story. I would recommend you buy the Library Binding version by HarperCollins (1999, ISBN 0-38-199923-8) or check out a book with illustrations from your library.
Excellent seller.......2004-07-12
The seller's description of the book's condition was correct. In fact the book was in better condition than I expected. Fast delivery and an easy transaction.

Excellent coaching designed to get you started.......2007-05-15
My profile. 43 yo begining entrepreneur.. scared to death and sceraming like mad in this freefall period.
This review refers to the audio cd book
5 stars for content 21/2 for production
First the production setback- the audio has a very low recording volume so I have to put the normal listening volume in the 27 seting of my car set, causing severe acoustic shock after I take it our and radio comes into play! Then there is the fact that each cd has 2 or 3 tracks each ove 30 min, so if you want to rehear a part, forget it!
I listened to this cd for over 2 years while being a travelling salesman for a major corp here in Vnza. The approach taken here is very original and a extraordinairy complement to the Millionare Mind and the Rich Dad series.
Three basic principles or secrets are revealed to an average Joe (I identified with him) by wealthy and successfull millionaires who are rich in advice giving as well... new paradigms come into being as common notions of wealth generations are dispelled here... be prepared to be enlighten.
Personally, I found great comfort in the first principle of " You can' make money unless you are having fun" for I know what I like to do in my life, and selling has always been part of that... but the message is, if you know what you like then set those gears of imagination moving to make a profit our of it.. do not fight your natural tendencies.. of course the other principles work on the focus and balance to be provided to his one.
Uncover the Answers to Your Questions and Reach Your Goals........2005-12-01
Reading this book will take you on a journey inside your own world, but the perspective will be from the outside looking in. Big Bucks can help clear the FOG that sometimes clouds our minds when we are thinking about a problem and not finding solutions.
Success in business is a ongoing process and this book is like having your own Mentoring Team working with you on reaching your goals.
If you have questions in your mind about how to earn BIG BUCKS ! and are open, you will find YOUR answers inside.
Enjoy the process or do something else..........2004-05-05
I received this book along with three others for free upon joining a real estate investors group. Thus, I was not expecting too much from the volume. I also was blissfully ignorant of the authors and their prior successful works, and have not read the other two volumes in this motivational trilogy.
As such, I was pleasantly surprised by the narrative and novel style. The use of the protagonist "Len" is quite refreshing and works extremely well. His visits to the "three Wise Men/Woman" are amusing. The three lessons learned are absolute truths in the working world and totally reinforced my personal belief that having fun while making money is essential. If you love what you do you will be great at it.
I highly recommend this book to everyone with a open mind. It is a quick read (about a weekend ought to do it) and if read and followed, is sure to enrich your life both spiritually and financially.
About my only criticism is that it is somewhat derivative of other motivational types such as Lou Tice (reticular activating systems); Ivan Meisner (givers gain);and the grandaddy of them all: Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich).
Nothing earth-shattering, but it makes sense!.......2004-02-27
In RAVING FANS, authors Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Knowles
concentrated on the importance of delighting customers . . . in GUNG
HO!, they focused on how companies could become the "employer of
choice" and attract the best employees . . . I liked both those
books and thus looked forward to listening to the taped version of
BIG BUCKS! . . . this third book promised me in its subtitle "How
to Make Serious Money for Both You and Your Company," something
that could be done by focussing my time and energy.
Like other works by Blanchard and Knowles, the points are
presented in a parable . . . here, we're introduced to a man struggling
to make ends meet . . . he goes on a journey to discover the secret
to becoming rich and meets three wise (and successful) people
who present simple truths that can be applied to virtually any
situation.
I liked the above fact; i.e., that when listening, I found myself
thinking that this stuff makes sense--and I should and could
apply it to my situation . . . there's nothing overly earth-shattering,
yet I should add that it got me thinking . . . and it made sense.
Also making sense was the conclusion, in which the authors
reviewed the simple tests that should have been learned from
either reading or listening:
The test of joy . . . you can't make money unless you're having fun.
The test of purpose . . .you can't make money unless making money
is more important than having fun.
The test of creativity . . . incomes, less expenses = profit.
And, lastly, there's perpetual prosperity . . . which comes to those
who help others.
Ranks # 3 in the list.......2003-05-05
This book is meant to be the third leg of a three-legged stool, the other two legs being Gung Ho! and Raving Fans by the same authors. After taking care of people who work for the organization, who in turn take care of customer delight, this book now aims at making big money both for the employee and the company. Logically this is a good sequence. The style is the same, powerful concepts explained through a parable. In Big Bucks our hero is Len who is a simple person with an ambition to make big money.
Expectations at the beginning of the book makes one align Len with the Area Manager (Raving Fans) or with Andy (Gung Ho!). This comparison may let you down. I should confess that Big Bucks is not a story as powerful as Gung Ho! where Andy Longclaw with the squirrels, the beavers and the geese saves Walton Works # 2. Andy still lives in our hearts. In Raving Fans, it is sheer customer delight straight from first principles applied with absolute clarity and focus, and a feeling of joy that recharges anyone to see the customer in a new perspective. Big Bucks lags behind these two great books in creating such an impact.
The third leg needs a bit of reinforcement. May be I will read the book again when I really decide to go after big money. Till then, Gung Ho! friends.
Book Description
While all hunters dream of chasing trophy bucks high up on the sides of remote mountains, far from other hunters, the reality is that most serious hunters are chasing stressed-out, pressured deer in crowded areas, and the deer know they're on the run.
But the word "pressure" doesn't just mean the presence of other hunters, it also covers the problems of hunting in less rural areas, special "limited-entry" hunts, and hunting deer who are in turn being hunted by natural predators like wolves and coyotes.
In thoughtful, clearly written chapters, SCOTT BESTUL surveys what experts can tell us about how deer react in high-pressure situations, how hunters need to adapt to the pressure hunt, why scouting is even more important in the high-pressure environment, and how to recognize travel corridors and study aerial maps. He looks at tactics for stands and stalking in heavily hunted areas. And he explains the best techniques for organizing drives and pushes, and looks at new approaches to bowhunting, particularly in special short-duration hunts, public areas, and metro zones.
The world of hunting has changed tremendously in the last twenty years, and HUNTING PRESSURED WHITETAILS may well be the deer-hunting handbook of the next twenty.

this book is ok.......2007-03-24
This book is pretty well rounded covering both gun and bow. Mixes in some science and good technique covering most topics. I have 60+ books on Whitetail hunting probably half have the same basic content this book falls in with that group altough its better then most.
Book Description
What started as a game of Pong, with little blips dancing across a computer screen, has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar industry that is changing the future, making inroads into virtually all aspects of our culture.Who are the minds behind this revolution? How did it happen? Where is it headed?
In Smartbomb, journalists Heather Chaplin and Aaron Ruby take the reader behind the scenes at gaming conventions, into powerhouse think tanks where new games are created, into the thick of the competition at cyberathlete tournaments, and into the homes of gamers for whom playing a role in a virtual world has assumed more relevance and reality than life in the real world.
Customer Reviews:
Just a few points short of a high score..........2006-05-17
THE GOOD: All things considered, Smartbomb is an excellent book. It's well paced and paints an exciting portrait of an exploding industry. Following in the footsteps of "Game Over", "Trigger Happy" and "Joystick Nation" the authors present a dynamic overview of the gaming scene. All the usual suspects are here (Miyamoto, Bushnell, Carmack...). Instead of just rehashing the same stories and personalities found in other books they manage to squeeze out a couple of new gems. Who knew that Will Wright has been working on "Spore" (aka "SimEverything") for 8 years now? Or that he wanted to call "The Sims", "SimDollhouse"? The bits on Miyamoto's family life and a clever retelling of his 'cave games' proved insightful. They also did a great job capturing the inventive atmosphere that spawned video games in the first place. Probably the most interesting (and frightening) section though, featured the American military's take on video games as a recruiting tool. The blunt nature of these conversations and giddy allusions to "Ender's Game" and kid soldiers left my jaw on the floor. The fact that the American government promotes this agenda while demonizing games as corruptors of youth speaks volumes.
THE BAD: As much as I enjoyed reading the accounts of those featured here, the overall aim of the book left something to be desired. While it's true that a Tony Hawk game can sell more copies than a Britney Spears album and no one will know who made it - generating some sort of "star culture" found in other industries won't help. If anything, it will damage the industry. There are already enough megalomaniacs chomping at the bit to earn the label of "the next Carmack" or "the next Miyamoto". The fact of the matter though is that people like Miyamoto and Carmack earned their chops back when teams were smaller, the stakes lower and projects much smaller in scope. Surely there will still be visionary characters that raise everyone else's game but it will most likely be a collection of individuals working together, shaping artificial reality as a cohesive whole. Not very sexy I'm afraid but that's really where we're at.
THE UGLY: This is more of a nit-picky game nerd thing but I found some of the inaccuracies in this book a little disappointing. Crediting Yu Suzuki as the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog is like giving Michelangelo credit for painting the Mona Lisa. Luigi appeared in games before "Super" Mario Brothers, and it's QuakeCo"n" not QuakeCo"m". These are admittedly obnoxious things to point out but it made me wonder if some of the other sections of the book which I wasn't so familiar with were in fact accurate.
Criticism aside I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Hopefully more people will point to this book as a document of the exciting, positive aspects of video game development.
The Best Book about the Game Industry.......2006-04-17
Simply put, Smarbomb is well-written and insightful. The words on the page are enjoyable to read, and the portrayals of the movers and shakers of the industry are the kind of writing you usually find in award-winning literature.
This is rare -- writing about games is usually not very interesting nor does it presenting views that challenges or makes you think. Trust me, I know. I've worked as a video game designer, and read far too many books on the topic.
That's probably this book's biggest strength -- because of the way it's written anyone can enjoy it: gamers, game-makers, or people who've never played a game before in their life.
Fantastic overview.......2006-02-25
I read about the videogame industry constantly as part of my job, but I got more of an overview of the pioneers and personalities involved in the development & running of this industry.
The only complaint I had about the book was I thought it should have given more of a background about the 900 lb. gorilla in the industry--Electronic Arts. Even so, a very enjoyable book for anyone interested in how the videogame industry came about & the personalities behind it.
The history of how this country become involved in video games.......2006-02-07
The video game industry is big money these days, powered by a blend of computer geeks and business mavericks who have turned it into a big business - and Smartbomb: The Quest For Art, Entertainment, And Big Bucks In The Videogame Revolution traces the history of how this country become involved in video games. Authors Heather Chaplin and Aaron Ruby went on a five-year investigation into the history and technology of the video game explosion, gaining access to design labs and business meetings alike: Smartbomb examines both individuals and trends in a survey of models, legends, and achievement.
Great Read For Anyone That Plays Videogames.......2006-01-16
Smartbomb is a great book for anyone interested in the gaming industry. Whether you're currently working in (or trying to get in) the industry or if you're just the casual gamer that sometimes wonders who are some of the people that put out the top games. The people the authors "hang out with" throughout the book are icons of the gaming industry. Guys like Shigeru Myiamoto (Nintendo), Will Wright (The Sims), John Carmack (Doom), and many others are talked about in the book. Also, the book focus on some of the people and events that have made the game industry a huge success. Events such as CPL and GDC are just two of the many events covered throughout the book.
The only downside (if you can call it that) was the way the setting and time would change randomly within the same chapter. Other than that, the book is flawless.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn a little something about the "behind-the-scenes" business side of the gaming industry.

Customer Reviews:
good book.......2007-03-25
I liked this book alot . As a tracking book it's as infomationaly complete as any. I personally like "Big Bucks the Benoit way" better. The chapter " Track him down" in this book is worth the price of the book. As with the other tracking books I have found the sign reading info is relivent most anywhere. Hal Blood, The Benoits, R.G. Bernier are pure deer hunters. They hunt the toughest areas in the toughest conditions. They are going to be successful on big deer anywhere they choose to hunt. Not just on a high dollar lease's and guided hunts like alot of the "experts" are. I have picked up alot up info in there writing.
Most enjoyable deer hunting book I ever read.......2007-01-11
This was the most enjoyable deer hunting book I ever read. This is a how to book on how to hunt whitetails in lightly hunted remote northern forests. However, there is plenty of practical knowledge that applies to all of whitetail hunting. The author does a particularly good job of mixing in short interesting hunting stories to illustrate his points. These stories by themselves would be worth the price of the book. This is an excellent book both to learn something about whitetail hunting and just to read for enjoyment.
Better for the Northern Hunter.......2004-12-09
This book really seems to cover the most effective hunting tactics for those of us in the colder climates. It deals with tracking (especially in snow) quite a bit. It also deals with deer behavior and the probable reasons for this behavior. I have learned a lot from this book and plan on using the tactics explained and looking for bucks in places covered here. I love how the lessons learned are interspersed with good hunting stories to back up the lesson. Not all the stories are success stories either. Mr Blood does a good job explaining the hunt and respecting it, whether it leads to a harvest or not.
Disapointing.......2004-11-22
As a twenty plus year hunter of big woods Bucks in northern Minnesota I held high hopes for this book.
It was a disapointment from start to finish!
It proposes to provide insight and strategies into hunting Northern whitetails and only offers sporadic stories of various hunts Hal Blood has participated in.
Look elsewhere!
No way does Hal take a backseat to the Berniers or Benoits!.......2004-09-09
I have all their books, all provide some interesting reading. I find Hals book straight to the point, full of good tips and he doesnt even spend 1/2 the time tooting his own horn like in the others books. Hals book is 1 to keep for a lifetime, a reference book.

"If you fell into a coma in November of 1994 and woke up yesterday, a lot of things might surprise you. But nothing would baffle you more than what has happened to the Republican Party. Stephen Slivinski can explain. Buck Wild tells a painful story, but it's honest and true and well worth reading."
-TUCKER CARLSON, host of MSNBC's
The Situation with Tucker Carlson and author of
Politicians, Partisans and Parasites
"Buck Wild does more than reveal what's wrong with the Republicans. It reveals what's wrong with us, the voters who put them in office. Politicians are foxes. But we insist on believing that some are guard dogs. We elect them to watch the hen house, and on the first Wednesday in November there's nothing left but feathers."
-
P. J. O'ROURKE, author of
Parliament of Whores and
Peace Kills
"During the course of Stephen Slivinski's superbly researched chronicle, we meet some true conservative heroes from whom we can draw inspiration for the future. Their constant courage, punctuated by occasional success, tells us that the fight against the Leviathan state might yet be won."
-JAMES P. PINKERTON, White House domestic policy aide under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush
A scathing look at how the Republican Party, once the paragon of fiscal conservativism, has embraced Big Government and become even more irresponsible with taxpayer money than the Democrats.

Illuminating.......2007-04-21
For proponets of limited government this is a must read. I've often thought that if I really knew how to follow the money, I'd get closer to the truth of our government. This book is basically a historical map on federal spending, and should come with a warning: it'll make you mad as hell. Its worse than you even suspected.
Stephen Slivinski for president I say. We'll just work on the last name, call him "Ski" or something. I hope he reads this, I'd like to thank him for his work, and my awareness.
Andy Johnson, Salem VA.
A nostalgic look back at what might have been...........2007-04-15
Steven Slivinski's BUCK WILD does an excellent job of documenting the migration of the Republicans from a party of limited government conservatism (Goldwater/Reagan) to a party of national greatness conservatism (Brooks/Kristol), compassionate conservatism (Brooks) and big government conservatism (Barnes).
Starting his analysis in 1994 with the Republican Revolution, Slivinksi argues that the Republican Party stuck to its Contract With America pledge to scale back a federal government "that is too big, too intrusive and too easy with the public's money," but only for a short period. From 1995 through 1997, the Party was able to limit discretionary spending, move towards a balanced budget and pass welfare and farm subsidy reform under intense opposition. Beginning in approximately 1998 when a strong economy produced a surge in federal revenues, the Party started to abandon its limited government roots in favor of expanded spending, targeted tax breaks and increased government pork. This transformation reached its apex under the GWB administration, which has presided over the largest expansion in federal spending since LBJ (in total) and Nixon (after excluding defense and homeland security expenditures). This leads Slivinksi to conclude that the Republicans have become the party of big government.
Many who disagree with Slivinski's and others' criticisms of the Republican spending spree, like to argue that federal spending increases should be evaluated as a percentage of GDP, rather than in absolute terms. While I disagree, the record from 1995 through 2006 lends little support for this argument. In 1995, when the Republicans took control of Congress, federal spending was 20.7% of GDP. By the time Clinton left office in 2001, Congress and Clinton had shrunk federal spending to 18.4% of GDP and if left to increase on auto-pilot, federal spending would total approximately 17% of GDP today-- a dramatic decrease indeed. Instead by 2006, GWB and the Republican Congress had expanded the federal government to 20.8% of GDP, effectively reversing the gains of the previous decade.
What started out so fruitfully in 1994 with the Republican Revolution has ended with a bloated federal government and a Republican Party with little direction. BUCK WILD explores all of these areas and more. There are also plenty of behind-the-scenes accounts (e.g. Gingrich vs. the Gang of Eleven) that make the book both informative and entertaining.
Don't blame me.......2006-10-24
Don'e blame me, I voted *** Libertarian ***. This book does a fine job of showing how the "two party" system has become one big party at your expense! Only the Libertarian party offers a real alternative to the tax and spend Democrats, and the borrow and spend Republicans!
The Book Every Red-State Republican Should Read.......2006-09-27
While this book is an excellent contribution to the increasingly heated public discussion over what GOP rule in Washington has meant for the country's fiscal affairs, I believe that non-policy wonks stand to benefit the most from reading this book. In other words, if you're one of the 99.9% of Americans who doesn't live and die for the confusing DC Beltway details (i.e., "normal" people), this book is for you. In particular, if you're a red-state Republican who still thinks that the Grand Old Party is the "party of limited government" then you DEFINITELY need to read this book. Then again, if you're a proud big government Democrat who cringes at the thought of Tom DeLay and George Bush running the nation's finances, this book will help you sleep better at night knowing that your favorite government program is probably still flush with taxpayer dollars.
The author details in clear language that the GOP is officially the "other" party of big government. And when card-carrying members of the Republican establishment argue that "the Democrats would be worse," you'll be able to explain to them that getting eaten by sharks or going quickly in your sleep still delivers the same result: death.
A Must Read for Informed Voters.......2006-09-24
I am glad I bought this book. Good books entertain and inform. Really good books also make you think. Buck Wild is a really good book.
The author tells a compelling story about the federal budget process. Like any good story, it has villians and heroes. Who wears the black hats and who wears the white ones will surprise you.
The history of the budget process, how it's written, approved and implemented is well researched by the author and presented in an entertaining and informative style. For a non-fiction offering, Buck Wild is more paced than most books of this genre. It's a page turner that keeps you wondering what the next chapter will offer up.
Today's hot items of term limits, the war on terror, taxes and the deficit are all discussed in the book. How the current Republican leadership has chosen to govern in light of these factors is the book's real meat. Once the GOP gained control of both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue they changed. Mr. Slivinski offers some intriguing reasons.
The author closes with a brilliant historical analysis of the spending habits of two types of government, united government, our current form, and divided (gridlock).
I have been a proud Republican for thirty years and will continue to be.However when I enter the voting booth this November I will be approaching the who and why of my vote from a different viewpoint thanks to Mr. Slivinski.
Buck Wild is a must read,if you pride yourself in being an informed voter.
