Managerial Statistics Text book.......2006-11-03
It was the text book the professor wanted me to buy.
It was good.
Sanjay Chheda.......2006-10-06
The book is very good with really good explanations and examples on descriptive analysis and inferential analysis.
Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins.......2001-06-04
On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.
Serious Excel 2000 Problem.......2001-04-12
The text book is great. I have many of Winston's other books and they are all great. The Palisade stuff works just fine. However, the StatPro Addin that accompanies this text does not work with MS Excel 2000. I contacted the IT guy that the authors directed me to--he was stumped. He just gave up and suggested I return my book for a refund because he could not figure out it out. Again, the book is great but the StatPro Addin sucks!
No trouble with Excel.......2001-01-31
I find the text and software a useful set of tools. It assumes familiarity with basic statistics and Excel, and builds on them to develop a powerfull ability to analize data and make decisions from it. I experienced no trouble with the software install or operation.

Praise for
Financial Modeling with Crystal Ball(r) and Excel(r)
"Professor Charnes's book drives clarity into applied Monte Carlo analysis using examples and tools relevant to real-world finance. The book will prove useful for analysts of all levels and as a supplement to academic courses in multiple disciplines."
-Mark Odermann, Senior Financial Analyst, Microsoft
"Think you really know financial modeling? This is a must-have for power Excel users. Professor Charnes shows how to make more realistic models that result in fewer surprises. Every analyst needs this credibility booster."
-James Franklin, CEO, Decisioneering, Inc.
"This book packs a first-year MBA's worth of financial and business modeling education into a few dozen easy-to-understand examples. Crystal Ball software does the housekeeping, so readers can concentrate on the business decision. A careful reader who works the examples on a computer will master the best general-purpose technology available for working with uncertainty."
-Aaron Brown, Executive Director, Morgan Stanley, author of The Poker Face of Wall Street
"Using Crystal Ball and Excel, John Charnes takes you step by step, demonstrating a conceptual framework that turns static Excel data and financial models into true risk models. I am astonished by the clarity of the text and the hands-on, step-by-step examples using Crystal Ball and Excel; Professor Charnes is a masterful teacher, and this is an absolute gem of a book for the new generation of analyst."
-Brian Watt, Chief Operating Officer, GECC, Inc.
"Financial Modeling with Crystal Ball and Excel is a comprehensive, well-written guide to one of the most useful analysis tools available to professional risk managers and quantitative analysts. This is a must-have book for anyone using Crystal Ball, and anyone wanting an overview of basic risk management concepts."
-Paul Dietz, Manager, Quantitative Analysis, Westar Energy
"John Charnes presents an insightful exploration of techniques for analysis and understanding of risk and uncertainty in business cases. By application of real options theory and Monte Carlo simulation to planning, doors are opened to analysis of what used to be impossible, such as modeling the value today of future project choices."
-Bruce Wallace, Nortel
Customer Reviews:
goes beyond deterministic assumptions.......2007-06-24
The book is all about simulations. In financial modelling, as opposed to engineering or science. Readers from the latter 2 fields who have coded simulations will find much in common. The specific equations in the text for finance are largely different from what you've met before. But the basic treatment is essentially the same.
Typically, the text will describe some financial equation. The Crystal Ball program lets you easily generate random data as input to simulations, which it then runs.
Despite Excel in the book's title, the book is mostly about using Crystal Ball. Charnes shows how you can go well beyond a simple deterministic treatment of an income statement or balance sheet. Typically, most companies just use the deterministic approach. The danger is that this approach relies on certain assumptions. Using Crystal Ball and the book, you can test the effect of relaxing these assumptions on the balance sheet. A more robust approach to financial planning.

Acho que faltou um pouco mais de detalhes nos tópicos, porém o livro apresenta excelente modelos técnicos.

Misleading Title.......2004-10-08
Should be "Introduction to Excel using Finance Examples" At an introductory level, the Excel coverage is OK. But the finance component is extremely shallow. The authors need to team up with someone who knows finance. Those who seriously want to learn what this text wanted to offer should try "Financial Modeling Using Excel and VBA" (Wiley Finance)
by Chandan Sengupta.
Good Book.......2004-02-28
This is an excellent self-study book. You learn MS Excel and Financial Analysis at the same time. You can learn (by doing) the construction of financial statements & cash budgets. For those interested in financial economics the book teaches about the Capital Asset Pricing model, Return On Equity, Net Present Value and the Cost of Capital. It even contains a section on forecasting which is invaluable to those looking to do rather than read about it. Best of all it shows you how to do this stuff with a readily available desktop application(excel). Furthermore, you learn not just how to input the authors formulas but how to build your own using the IF, AVERAGE, TREND functions etc. etc.
The best thing about this book is that you don't just read dry definitions of finance and economic arcana, but practice it as you go along. This really helps to build your skills!
Insufficient Finance Explanations.......2000-09-30
I wanted to learn about principals of finance such as depreciation etc...this book is NOT for that. It assumes you know a good bit about finance, but have never heard of Excel...not a likely scenario.
Very good because it is practical and also informative........2000-01-02
An excellent book that really shows you how powerful Excel can be. But, at the same time, it also teaches you about Finance using Excel. Very, very good. A regret: I would have liked more explanations, in general, on the financial concepts used in the book (especially in the last chapters).
To Dr. Mayes: in your next book, the advanced one a reviewer speaks about, could you give more explanations in general on the financial concepts. Otherwise, keep using this great tool, Excel, or even Access 2000. I refer you to "Building Accounting Systems using Access 97" by James T. Perry, et al. I would think that you could use Access 2000 to apply financial analysis if Access is better suited than Excel, which I am not so sure; although Mr. Perry seems to give quite convincing arguments in favour of using Access instead of Excel.
Thanks for your book that I really liked. I am now up-to-date with Excel and I am keen to learn more about Finance. Thanks to you :-)
The concept largely works!.......1999-09-27
This book got me a very comfortable start with spreadsheets, and it is interesting to experience how effective it is in combining spreadsheet proficiency with finance proficiency, as the author intends. Although somebody buying this book today may have concerns with its utility given its publication date, I've just begun using spreadsheets with Excel 2000 and I still found the book immensely useful. You may, however, find yourself yearning for the version of Excel current at the book's publication date simply so you might bypass any dealings with that notoriously --and incredibly-- stupid paperclip 'helper'.

Dissatisfaction rating.......2006-05-30
I'm generally disappointed at what the book seems to promise and what it delivers. My take on the book is that it is not thorough enough, and topped with a number of typos and reference errors. I find that several examples and references are hard to follow. Perhaps expanding on the explanation on the examples would help. I would also recommend adding a CD for examples. I wouldn't mind paying more to be able to follow the concepts and fully understand them. Afterall, this is business analysis with "Microsoft Excel." There's just no "Excel", just text. Trying to go through this book is more like reading a cliff note version of a "real" book (again, hard to follow leading to discouragement and disappointment. If you're patient, you can find some values, no doubt, just be prepared to spend some time more than you would expect, and to reference a couple more books for validation/clarification of concepts discussed in this book.
Must have analyst book!!!.......2005-01-10
This book was well written for anyone starting out in spreadsheet analysis work. Each chapter provides many examples to get you going and provides carefull desciption of analysis tools.
A MBA student.......2004-10-19
Surprisingly, this is an incredible book. I take my MBA at University of Delaware. To apply how to use MS Excel effectively, this is the all-in-one book that can serve me for many classes such as Financial Reporting and Analysis, Data Analysis and Management Control, Financial Management, Marketing Management, Operation Management and Management Science, etc. The book is about intermediate level not too easy or too advance.
Before you buy other books in Excel, you should check the content first.
If the content focus on the function such as how to use date function, do not buy it. The content that you looking for should like this book. For example, the book should show you how you deal with balance sheet. Then, it explaints what Excel function can do for you.
Excellent Book for Finance and Spreadsheet purposes.......2003-06-06
This book is very good at showing some very powerful Excel tricks using very practical Finance examples. I don't think any heavy Spreadsheet user or Finance Professional would regret adding this book to their library.
Perfect for beginer in accountancy.......2003-01-31
I have BA in Busines administration and now i start a course in accountancy.
I bought this book to refresh my knowledge in accountancy and because i use Excel almost for everything.
I think that this book is ideal for everyone who want to get an idea of what is accountancy and general business economics. Is very analytical and interpretive so it is understood for everyone who has not any previous experience in Business economics.
Although is very interpretive in acoounting - economic theory, I belive that substantial prior experience in Excel is required.
I'm not sure but I think that the examples of excel applications sometimes have some wrongs. i.e. The example on text refers to B4 cell, but indeed the information that refer to, are in C4 cell if you look better in a picture.

Making Sense of Data: A Practical Guide to Exploratory Data Analysis and Data Mining

Book Description
Learn how to develop models for classification, prediction, and customer segmentation with the help of Data Mining for Business Intelligence
In today's world, businesses are becoming more capable of accessing their ideal consumers, and an understanding of data mining contributes to this success. Data Mining for Business Intelligence, which was developed from a course taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, and the University of Maryland's Smith School of Business, uses real data and actual cases to illustrate the applicability of data mining intelligence to the development of successful business models.
Featuring XLMiner, the Microsoft Office Excel add-in, this book allows readers to follow along and implement algorithms at their own speed, with a minimal learning curve. In addition, students and practitioners of data mining techniques are presented with hands-on, business-oriented applications. An abundant amount of exercises and examples are provided to motivate learning and understanding.
Data Mining for Business Intelligence:
* Provides both a theoretical and practical understanding of the key methods of classification, prediction, reduction, exploration, and affinity analysis
* Features a business decision-making context for these key methods
* Illustrates the application and interpretation of these methods using real business cases and data
This book helps readers understand the beneficial relationship that can be established between data mining and smart business practices, and is an excellent learning tool for creating valuable strategies and making wiser business decisions.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Introduction, Works with Excel.......2007-03-19
Data mining is the extraction of useful information from large amounts of data. Perhaps the best example of this is Amazon. If you go to Amazon to look at a book, you'll find such tidbits of information as a section on the page headlined 'Customers who bought this item also bought' and another 'What do customers ultimately buy after viewing this item?'
That's datamining, dozens or hundreds, or thousands of people looked at the page about this item. Then they went on to take these other actions. Among all the data that Amazon has collected they mine their database and pull out information to fill in these blocks.
This book, intended for MBA level students gives an excellent introduction to data mining. It further includes access to an Excel add-in called XLMiner that is specifically set up to allow the student to use Excel to learn how data mining is done.
The one thing I would ask the authors to do in their next edition is to provide a brief review of the commercially available data mining software products that are available. If not all of the software, perhaps just the top half dozen or so. In real life we aren't going to use Excel for data mining, our data resides in a database somewhere.
Condensed Discussion of DataMining.......2007-02-10
This book discusses some of the techniques used
in Data Mining.
It goes into Data Exploration as well as Evaluating
Classification and Predictive Performance.
Some of the more advanced techniques such as
Neural Nets and Cluster Analysis are
also discussed.

From the authors:.......2007-01-27
This book got its start as notes for a data mining class that one of us (Nitin Patel) was teaching at MIT, and was completed while another of us (Galit Shmueli) was teaching a similar course at Maryland. Both courses were part of an MBA program. We found that, while there are a lot of books on data mining, there were none that actually gave business students the skills and tools to implement data mining algorithms. So we set ourselves the task of writing a book that (1) provides real data sets with a business decision-making context and a hands-on orientation , (2) provides a theoretical and practical understanding of the key data mining methods of classification, prediction, data reduction and exploration at a level that is appropriate and useful for MBA's, and (3) bundles a powerful version of a commercial data mining tool that works in Excel (XLMiner). For this reason, we think our book will be appropriate not just for students, but also for business analysts with a quantitative orientation, on, indeed, anyone who wants to learn data mining via self-study. Have we succeeded? You be the judge! - P. Bruce (for G. Shmueli and N. Patel)

Worth it for the Disk.......2007-04-11
I have just recieved this Book, and have yet to delve into the text, but a brief review of the functionality provided on the the CD proves the purchase is worth it. Box Plots, Stem and leaf diagrams, Dtat point labeling and Scatterplot matrix alone is worth the price of the book
Good resource.......2006-12-22
I had this book for an undergraduate web-based distance learning course.
It provided good explanations, both of the excel function, and what was going on mathematically.
Very easy to find information.
StatPlus is a good addin. The interactive elements on distributions was also very helpful.
Very thorough text for both beginning and intermediate level users of Excel.
Outstanding, practical resource.......2005-02-02
Each of us on our data analysis team were given this book and have used the StatPlus add-ins to create control charts for various processes that we report on, with great success. The add-ins will work in Office Excel 2003 as well. Our company has seen substantially increased productivity and success as a result of the analyses that we are able to do with this book.
No Support Whatsoever.......2004-08-04
I have to say this book really does an okay job providing ways to use Excel for data analysis. But if you have ANY problems with their Add-Ins not working, the support people will just tell you it's an Excel problem...duh! Buy this book if you trust their Add-Ins will work on your computer. But if you encounter problems that you can't solve via the Microsoft help function, don't expect any help from the support that's promised in the back of the book. They'll just tell you to have your instructor figure it out.
A review by a statistics class (XP edition).......2003-10-18
I use this book as the main text book for the first half of a class in statistics and research methods for students from a wide variety of social science and humanities backgrounds, with little formal statistics or mathematics background.
I surveyed my students with 5 questions about the book, with responses on a Likert scale (1=strongly disagree, 3=neutral, 5=strongly aggree. 17 students responded, which is a small enough sample size to caution applicability of results. The mean value of each response appears after the questions I asked.
1.The book was, overall, helpful in explaining statistical concepts. (Mean=2.73). Students would have appreciated more explanation and examples.
2.The book helped me to analyze data. (Mean=2.3)
3.The StatPlus AddIn was, overall, helpful in analyzing data. (Mean=3.76)
4.The StatPlus AddIn worked well on my computer. (Mean=3.7)
5.Overall, I would recommend this book to next year's class. (Mean=3.05)
Thus, overall, weighting each question equally, my students gave the book 3.12 stars.
As a professor, I give the book 4 stars. The organization of the book chapters fit well in an overview course, with one chapter assinged per week. The StatPlus AddIn is worth the cost of the book itself, as it expands the statistical capabilities of Excel without students needing to purchase additional software. There are a wide range of problems and example data sets which come with the book, applicable to a wide range of disciplines. A significant number of students had computer difficulties installing and running the StatPlus AddIn, so I would recommend to the company a support web page with FAQs, at the least.
Students with little preparation in mathematics or statiscs who need a good step-by-step guide to data analysis will find this book helpful, especially if they do the excercises at the end of the chapters. (The publishers should make the answers available to everyone, not just us instructors -- for those working on their own who want to check their work). However, students with some preparation in statistics or mathematics may be better served with a more advanced text.

GREAT BOOK...THE BEST DEA CD.......2004-05-20
The book is excellent with a nice mix of theory and applications in DEA. I believe this is the best book on DEA. Of special interest is the CD that looks at many DEA models. The CD has no competitor and is by far the best around. I have used this CD in many of my academic papers on DEA. If you need DEA software this is the book.

Book Description
If you're using a computer to generate charts for meetings and reports, you don't have to be taught how to lie-you're already doing it. You probably don't know your charts are unreliable, and neither does your audience. So you're getting away with it-until a manager or a sales prospect or an investor makes a bad decision based on the information that you were so helpful to provide. The main focus of How to Lie with Charts is on the principles of persuasive-and undistorted-visual communication. It's about careful thinking and clear expression. So don't blame the computers. People are running the show.

Book Description
Excel's "what-if" data analysis tools let you experiment with your data to project future results. In turn, these predictions will lead to better decision making and unlock the mystery of many business analysis scenarios. For example, what-if data analysis tools will enable you to forecast how lowering the price per unit--while increasing projected unit sales--might affect your profit margins.
Beginning Excel What-If Data Analysis Tools explores the use of Goal Seek, Data Tables, Scenarios, and Solver to help you get insight on your data. This book is focused and to the point, and it provides tutorial treatment of what-if tools in a practical, hands-on manner.
