    Book Description

"Investing well isn't easy, but it is possible. My goal in life is to make it easier for you to make money."

Jim Cramer is the champion of the middle-class investor. Every night on Mad Money, he provides valuable information about stocks, steering investors away from danger zones and leading them to the investments that can turn a lackluster portfolio into a powerhouse of profit. In his new book, he shows investors how to take the advice on his TV program and put it into action.

Cramer walks investors through the key decisions they have to make: understanding their tolerance for risk and defining their goals, doing the essential homework on a stock, and knowing how to buy and sell stocks the right way -- the Cramer way. This is a true nuts-and-bolts guide to investing, from Cramer's detailed discussion of the sort of homework investors must do to his own guidelines for knowing when and how to sell stocks.

Mad Money is a hugely entertaining television program, but it also offers valuable information that can be the basis for a winning portfolio. Cramer shows how to turn the "Lightning Round" into a terrific tool for investing; it's stock-market strength training. He reveals how he can assess a stock in only seconds -- a valuable skill that every investor can acquire and put to good use. He explains what to look for in his CEO and CFO interviews, and how to use those conversations to make successful investment decisions. He reviews some of his best calls made on Mad Money, as well as some of his worst ones, to extract ten lessons from each that can profit every investor. And for the Mad Money junkies who just can't get enough, Cramer goes behind the scenes to explain everything from the reason behind his deliberate mispronunciations to his notorious chair abuse to the zany props and buttons that keep things humming.

From the first "Booyah" to the last roar of the bull, Mad Money is every investor's favorite television program, and Jim Cramer's Mad Money is the book that can turn a TV program into a top-notch stock portfolio.

5 out of 5 stars For serious newbies, great for those with little time.......2007-09-22

I recently started trading online thanks to Prof. Cramer. I have both Mad Money & Real Money books including the audio books (read by Cramer) which are great companions. I've downloaded the audio books on my iPod and listen while driving (thru my car radio) or anytime I wish. I would highly recommend this to those who are serious about trading on their own. I admit the first trade I made I had to take a deep breath. The great thing is Cramer is there everyday to Cheer us on and discuss the current events in the market. He's funny and down to earth and makes school fun. I have Phil Town's Rule #1 based on Buffet and Grahams style to not lose money, but after you get his book you are on your own, literally. Phil Townsend does not have the STREET experience that Cramer has. Rule #1 is a good book to start with in your library but if you are serious and don't want to trade alone enroll in Cramer's school on making MONEY. I've made some great money and look forward to making more. I watch his show and own all of his books except for 'You Got Screwed'. BooYah!!! Good luck.

    Thanks Prof Cramer

This book delivers. Granted you might find some of this info online, but if you like sitting down with a book, or reading something on the train while going to work, pick this one up. It has a lot of good pointers and constant references to watch the show but hey I already do. I liked it, an easy read, a book that is both entertaining and educational, and kept me interested.

Please read Rule 1 investor by Phil Town instead of this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars So far so good.......2007-08-03

Great purchase. The authors do a superb job of describing topics in basic terms then escalate to the nitty gritty number crunching behind the concepts. I recommend for anyone needing a complete guide to FI securities.

4 out of 5 stars good overall reference.......2007-04-19

very good as a reference and general overview; if you want more detail and in-depth analysis you should look for something else but there's lots of specific lieterature out there so this still makes a good starting point

5 out of 5 stars the default reference.......2007-01-06

this is the de facto desk reference for fi securities. it is thorough and well presented. if you are working with fi, you probably have it, if not, you should. also highly recommend the fixed income mathematics text as well.

5 out of 5 stars nice overview of a wide range of topics.......2006-04-16

    i give 4.5 stars.

many reviewers comment that this book lacks depth, but hey, it just tries to give a general overview on a variety of fixed income securities, that's what it is, and this book does reasonably well on this purpose. it never means to contain everything on every fixed income securities.

the only thing i am concerned is that the page numbers listed on the index sometimes do not match.

5 out of 5 stars Very good for first exposure to financial markets.......2003-12-10

This book is not an advanced book on financial markets, but it is a good introductory book. I use this book for my undergraduate teaching. Both I and students are happy about the coverage of the book. It is well organized and well written. Improvements will be valuable in the derivatives markets and risk management areas.

    4 out of 5 stars Good start.......2003-12-04

I've used some version of this book for many years now, and I've seen it evolve. I think, as other reviewers have said, that there are some simplified portions of the book, especially those parts dealing with monetary economics. There are other portions which lay out the principles as only these authors can, and those parts are extremely helpful and valuable. This book allows me to teach my notes and thoughts with a textbook serving as a reference and an introduction -- it doesn't get in my way, in other words. I use it along with several other texts, and I think it gets the job done. Students seem to like it as well, mainly for its clarity. For someone wanting to learn the basics, this is an excellent choice.

2 out of 5 stars This book insults the intelligence of all but newcomers.......2002-11-08

Although this might be a perfect book for those looking for simplicity, I would not advise it to anybody with previous exposure to finance.
The book is a way too simple, and reveals huge ignorance on the markets outside the US.
I think the book is very much a benchmark to reveal ignorant finance - teachers.

      Book Description

Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets heralded a dramatic shift in the teaching of the money and banking course in its first edition, and today it is still setting the standard. By applying an analytical framework to the patient, stepped-out development of models, Frederic Mishkin draws students into a deeper understanding of modern monetary theory, banking, and policy. His landmark combination of common sense applications with current, real-world events provides authoritative, comprehensive coverage in an informal tone students appreciate. Mishkin’s previous post as Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York lends an insiders-view that helps to demystify this key institution for students.

I received my book before expected. The condition was as it was stated- excellent. Very satisfy with supplier.

      3 out of 5 stars Too thorough...........2007-04-25

I'm a student at the University of Michigan business school and this was a book assigned for one of the introductory economics courses here. It is VERY verbose and this can be both beneficial and problematic. On one hand, this book would be really helpful for those who are weak in symbolic logic since Mishkin go to great lengths to explain everything. But some of the unnecessary extra explanations can be distracting to the point of confounding the essentials. It wouldn't hurt to trim 1/3 of the contents in each chapter.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book for intermediate level.......2004-07-11

      Design:
The book is designed well with appropriate headings and sub-headings making it smooth to read and navigate. The language used is also well understood.

      Content:
This book introduces the various financial markets: bond, stock, foreign exchange and a brief discussion on derivatives. It gives a general idea and analysis behind the operating mechanisms of monetary policies, paving the way for further studies into the topics.

Its main focus is on the U.S. economy, and includes applications in the European Union and Asia as well. Small sections are devoted to real world applications, with reference to the concepts taught.

      For who:
On the other hand, this book remains an introduction to monetary economies and is not for students seeking detailed analysis. Students should also have a basic background on economics in order to utilize the text to the fullest.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and accessible book.......2002-11-23

Highly recommended for both dummies and people familiar with economics. The author presents an unbiased, unpartisan, clear introduction to numerous aspects of monetary policy, financial institutions, and financial markets. Along with factual material the author presents important and profound generalizations and principles.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful visit to the world of the global macro investor........2007-09-28

This fascinating book will take you into the world of current global macro investing. Steven Drobny interviews 13 successful traders, analysts and fund managers who participate in global macro investing in many different ways. Although some of the discussions are technical (but never mathematical), they are readable and easy to understand. Drobny also provides some information on the origins and early years of global macroeconomic investing, from John Keynes to George Soros. He talks to his interviewees about their backgrounds and asks their investment advice. His question-and-answer approach keeps things moving. We enjoyed Drobny's descriptions of the people he interviewed, though the interview-style format leads to somewhat choppy data. This book is surprisingly fun for what could have become a very dense, technical tome in less skilled hands.

5 out of 5 stars Find out what the experts think about investing in the global marketplace .......2007-09-17

This is a terrific book about how 13 investors use global macroeconomics in their work. The shorthand term is global macro. Since the field is pretty much undefined and can include investments of any time anywhere in the world, it is hard to define what exactly it is. In fact, the book isn't about Steven Drobny telling you about what he thinks it is. Instead, the chapters are question and answers with each of these practitioners of this technique.

The first few chapters offer some context and history of global macro investing. The earliest people doing it were probably John Maynard Keynes and Alfred Winlow Jones. Drobny takes us through the key macroeconomic crises of the past several decades and offers a few thoughts about the future.

The people he interviews are Jim Leitner of Falcon Management, Siva-Jothy of SemperMacro, the author's partner, but no relation - Andres Droby, Dr. John Proter of Barclays Capital, Dr. Sushil Wadhwani of Wadhwani Asset Management, Peter Thiel of Clarium Capital, Yra Harris of Praxis Trading, Jim Rogers, Dwight Anderson of Ospraie Management, Scott Bessent Capital, Mark Dimitrijevic of Everest Capital, Rob Standing of London Diversified Fund Management, and an anonymous currency specialist.

All of these folks look for people who are motivated, and have a passion and talent for math, economics, history, and have a demonstrated aptitude for training. You will notice that many have doctorates, but not all. Some learned the trade by trading, all were captivated by the process soon after they first came in contact with it.

I found the range of investments and their thoughts about the global economy fascinating. This is a very interesting book, especially so if you are interested in markets and trading. Their generally gloomy view of the future of the American economy is quite disturbing, though.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Opportunity that Leaves One Wanting More.......2007-08-21

I love to have extended conversations with experts. I feed off their enthusiasm and expertise. These conversations are even more exciting to me, when the person with whom I am speaking is an expert in a field I love.

With only one lowly exception, Steven Drobny has written a winner for me. By interviewing as assembling the edited transcripts of his conversations in his book, Inside the House of Money, Drobny opened a gateway into the thinking and experiences of 13 successful Global Macro investors.

Although many have the reputations as being secretive and reluctant to discuss their market approaches, the author gives the reader a glimpse of the thinking that goes into placing a multi-million trade on currencies, economies and securities.

Drobny is uniquely qualified to do these interviews. As a partner in an international macroeconomic research and advisory firm, he brings a seasoned professional's insight to the interviews. Key historical events that shaped the experiences of these traders are explored. Nuances of the current crowded markets are discussed intelligently. As a result, the reader gains precious insights into the subtleties of running a Global Macro Hedge Fund.

There is only one problem with the book. I found myself wanting more from the interviewees. Drobny gave me access to people with whom I would never have the opportunity to speak. What I read was great, but I wanted more. But then again, I trade like that.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-08-20

I found very interesting and rich of insights.
It's very useful in understanding hedge fund manager's approach to the markets.

5 out of 5 stars Decent overview of global macro traders.......2007-08-15

The book kept my interest and was very informative. Some of the interviews were excellent. I say some, because those that trade closer to my style are obviously more interesting for me. but theres plenty here for everyone.

I liked the interviews of so many different styles because it just proves my personal theory that anyone can make money. Every trader in the book trades differently and they still all make money.

I also like the comments from many of these traders that said that we were heading for a sub-prime meltdown and that the banks would be having problems. This was written more than a year ago, and thats exactly whats happening today. Dow is now down 8.6% off the high it made last month. The volatility is crazy. And these guys predicted it long ago. Lots of good insight from their interviews.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for undergrads.......2005-04-06

We used this book in our international finance class in univ of chicago. what i have is the 2nd edition but i have to admit this is a really comprehensive and clearly organized book, it is an ideal book for people who are interested in getting a general picture of money, banking and basic exchange rates. one drawback i can think of is the price.

4 out of 5 stars About the MyEconLab attachment to this book.......2005-02-16

If you're an independent learner; that is, not enrolled as a student in a course at a school, OR IF YOU ARE, BUT THE INSTRUCTOR IS NOT PARTICIPATING (Using the MyEconLab software for course materials), and thus can't provide you with a COURSEID, a warning about the MyEconLab study aid attachment to this textbook; the instructions for registering to use MyEconLab are less than candid.

They just say that without a CourseId you can still access "most of the online resources listed." You are directed to a generic Mishkin web site instead of registering at the main MyEconLab portal.

Being an honest person, I used the alternate registration. I was still asked for the ZIP for my school; I used my own. I then got a list of local schools or "Other" to choose from. I chose other, and entered "Independent Learner".

The registration then completed; the confirmation stated it is only good for SIX MONTHS.

If you go to the main MyEconLab Web portal shown in the user manual after registering as a non-student, your user ID will not be recognized. You have to use a generic portal for the Mishkin textbook instead.

      What you get there is:

e-textbook, glossary, FLASH animated graphs, chapter quizzes and Web links from the textbook margins
The Weekly news selection (web links, so may expire; earliest was Aug. 2004)
The "Chapter Readings" in journals, etc. (ditto above)

Since these can expire at their parent web sites, I suggest you take the precaution of printing them out (I use Acrobat to make PDF files or download PDF files if available at the source). Also check out any links in the articles and do the same.

The Readings are probably the best of what you DO get, along with the animations and quizzes. The web links are updated, that's OK if you're not good at figuring that sort of thing out for yourself.

There is also a series of Chapter Appendices, not printed in the book, available with the e-text of the book at the alternate site.

      WHAT YOU WON'T GET:

      "Foundations Interactive" (whatever that is)
"MathXL for Econ" - the math review tutorial (would be nice)
      "Research Navigator"
      "eThemes of the Times"

The last two are a REAL Disappointment to me, because the Navigator (see textbook Preface) is supposed (among other things) to provide "a complete YEAR of search for full-text articles from the New York Times" and "Best of Web Link Library of peer-reviewed web sites." The last is described in the Preface as "thematically related articles from the NYTimes accompanied by critical-thinking questions." I was looking forward to these, because the NYTimes charges $$ by the article for archived (non-current) articles, and this can get expensive in a hurry, and an increasing number of other web sites, including industry association journals are now similarly archive and have paid access only.

So without being enrolled in a class that has an instructor who is using the course material software, you won't be able to access some of the BEST of the advertised materials of the MyEconLab add on.

They could have been clearer about WHAT exactly you would have had access to. They also could have said that the non-student registration is only good for 6 months, since the description of the NYTimes access for a full year (which you don't get at all) might reasonably lead one to infer that the registration is valid for a year.

And I fail to see why they couldn't throw in at least the Math review tutorial, since it wouldn't seem to involve any kind of outside contract or royalty such as the NYTimes access might.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, an Econ book that is actually easy to understand!.......2004-09-30

I'm on Chapter 4 of this book, and I'm surprised at how clear and concise the author is. The sections are broken up very well and provide side titles in case you ever need to flip back to a certain topic.

4 out of 5 stars The best by far of slim pickings.......2004-01-18

I reviewed every Money and Banking text I could get my hands on before selecting Mishkin's text to use while I was an instructor at one of the top universities in the US. Mishkin's text was hands-down the best text. But there weren't a lot of alternatives to choose from. This text gets used in a lot of MBA programs.

The thing I liked most about this text was its comprehensiveness. Mishkin did a far better job than the other text of introducing stock options. And of course, he covered the banking (money multiplier, bnak loans, etc.) side comprehensively. Good job with exchange rates, too.

Weaknesses: Need more on the insurance industry, particularly with the biggest banks now firmly in that business. Need more on financial futures. And finally, I'd like to see a little more mathematical rigor. I supplemented the text in an undergrad class with some more mathematical articles from the economics literature.

THE NATIONAL BESTSELLING BOOK THAT EVERY INVESTOR SHOULD OWN

Peter Lynch is America's number-one money manager. His mantra: Average investors can become experts in their own field and can pick winning stocks as effectively as Wall Street professionals by doing just a little research.

Now, in a new introduction written specifically for this edition of One Up on Wall Street, Lynch gives his take on the incredible rise of Internet stocks, as well as a list of twenty winning companies of high-tech '90s. That many of these winners are low-tech supports his thesis that amateur investors can continue to reap exceptional rewards from mundane, easy-to-understand companies they encounter in their daily lives.

Investment opportunities abound for the layperson, Lynch says. By simply observing business developments and taking notice of your immediate world -- from the mall to the workplace -- you can discover potentially successful companies before professional analysts do. This jump on the experts is what produces "tenbaggers," the stocks that appreciate tenfold or more and turn an average stock portfolio into a star performer.

The former star manager of Fidelity's multibillion-dollar Magellan Fund, Lynch reveals how he achieved his spectacular record. Writing with John Rothchild, Lynch offers easy-to-follow directions for sorting out the long shots from the no shots by reviewing a company's financial statements and by identifying which numbers really count. He explains how to stalk tenbaggers and lays out the guidelines for investing in cyclical, turnaround, and fast-growing companies.

Lynch promises that if you ignore the ups and downs of the market and the endless speculation about interest rates, in the long term (anywhere from five to fifteen years) your portfolio will reward you. This advice has proved to be timeless and has made One Up on Wall Street a number-one bestseller. And now this classic is as valuable in the new millennium as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for any new Investor.......2007-08-08

I've been looking for more information on how to invest into this stock market. This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Not only did it help me figure out what kinds of companies to keep my eye out for, it also gave me ways and formulas to check out to verify if the stock was a good buy or not. I highly recommend this book!

1 out of 5 stars THE SMALLEST BOOK EVER.......2007-07-31

This is a MINIATURE book. Literally. 3 inces x 3 inches, "95 pages" with 30 or 40 big words on each page. Ridiculous. I can't believe such a thing was manufactured.

5 out of 5 stars Good start for investing basics.......2007-07-15

Excellent primer for how to consider investments from a qualitative perspective, rather than the number crunching quantitive perspective put forth by so many other writers. Peter Lynch demonstrates how amateur investors can have an edge on Wall Street professionals through our day-to-day interactions with businesses.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary read for any investor.......2007-06-30

Peter Lynch tells about the strategies and types of companies he enjoys purchasing that allow him to beat the market. The book is an easy read but the information in the book is necessary for any investor to continue his education in stock investments.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, very.......2007-06-09

the description was misleading, it's not a book, it's an excerpt in tiny, tiny pages. Very disappointed.

This is a great 1st time starter for small business. Anyone who's planning on starting an online business should definitely read.

      5 out of 5 stars It's exactly what I was expecting.......2007-08-25

This book is a really must-to read for brand new internet entrepreneurs like me. I'm quite happy about this purchase. I recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Beginners.......2007-04-03

Bruce takes us through all the necessary points to get a website on track to benefit from traffic that can be resourced for little to nothing.

If you have a site that is sitting dormant, this is your book.

I found many basic tips which people may not know how to search for. It's all written out here in this guide.

      4 out of 5 stars A Useful Compendium. .......2007-03-16

The majority of the information contained in this book can easily be found by doing several web searches for various topics. That being said, I appreciate the ease of being able to browse through this book for the information instead of searching for information which may or may not be valid.
Within these pages you will find sections on everything from setting up an affiliate program to using banner ads and Google AdWords for your site. You will also find an extensive list of terms and abbreviations common to the e-commerce industry.
Although a bit of a dry read, I finished the entire book in the space of two days on vacation. In the process of reading, several creative marketing ideas popped into my head, so I definitely have the author to thank for that!
In the end, I am giving this book 4 stars for two reasons: 1) He repeats a lot of information, as if trying to stretch out his word count to meet his deadline. 2) Some of the chapters read like an advertise for companies that he either owns or is otherwise related to.
However, beyond those two points of contention, I highly recommend this book as a starting point for anyone who is just starting out in the e-commerce or just needs a little refresher course.

5 out of 5 stars Five Geek vote for Mr. Brown.......2007-01-22

Whether you are a newcomer to the Internet or you have your own business already, this book by Bruce C. Brown is a fantastic read. When I started to read it, I almost could not put it down again. While this may sound strange to people believing that only novels can provide that reaction, this particular Computer and Business geek get that same feeling from a book providing a clear learning and business value.

"How to Use the Internet" is a book that if you read it closely and follow its advise, it will likely pay itself back many-fold. My library is scattered in multiple rooms, but this is one book that currently have a position of honor in the hands-on collection right next to my desk. Both an interesting read and a good reference book for later use.

The topics covered are good for both pure e-commerce business owners (or wannabees), and for people that more specifically target making money from an information base on the internet. E-commerce, Internet advertising, traffic generation in general is covered, as well as more Geek minded topics. Topics such as Search engine optimization, the importance of Meta Tags and Keyword settings, banner advertising, and even potentially using such offerings as Google Adwords(tm) and Google Adsense(tm). I personally believe, that this is one possible good avenue for expansion in a future edition of the book. It would be good for people starting out to know more about the gotchas in using for example Adwords. How the Pay-per-click business works, and the dangers of overspending with sometimes very little ROI. All depending on the business you are in of course. But competing with the big guys can end up being very expensive.

This is one book that already has a worn look and a lot of donkeys ears to remind me of important areas.
I give this book a vote of 5 out of 5 geeks. Good work Bruce.
