I didn't find this a helpful assistance to the text. It didn't give any explanations to the formulas or shortcuts that I expected. It was more like a dictionary for the text book (words and definitions).

This book is absolutely excellent. I have looked through other stats books and lost interest immediately, but this book is written in such a way that it actually makes you want to learn the material. Rather than just telling you how to solve the problem, the authors inform you as to why learning it is necessary, and frequently give you real-life, interesting scenarios regarding how specific formulas are used by psychologists.
Statistics, of course, becomes progressively more difficult over time, and you may need to seek outside help once you reach the last few chapters in particular. However, I believe that this book is the best of its kind, and it might be worth purchasing even if it is not your primary source for class, etc.

My first impression was that this book was priceless since it really helped me through the first couple of chapters in the main text. At the beginning it goes into lengthy, step-by-step instructions. I may not have felt as confident in the class if it had not been for this supplement. Once I reached chapter 6 and 7 it was all over!There was not enough information to help me understand what the book was losing me on, I needed to seek private tutoring at this point. Occasionally I still go to the book in the hopes that it can pick me up and get me through the homework but it does not. These later chapters may be too complicated to go into in a study guide but what would a study guide be for if not walking you through the steps? I am glad I bought it, just dissappointed that it quit so early.

I would recommend it to anyone who needs an easy--to-read and easy-to-understand textbook on this difficult subject! I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me!

Having seriously struggled for the last two years with the statistics side of my Psychology studies, this book has really made things so much clearer. An excellent book for anyone struggling to grasp the basic statistical concepts required in behavioral sciences.

I don't know what the hell these people are talking about, but this text is garbage... and that is an overstatement. I absolutely LOATHE this textbook. The examples are fragmented to the point you can barely connect them to the problems at the end of the chapter.... it's just a worthless waste of perfectly good money and paper.
My other statistics book for psychological statistics puts this book to such shame, it's sad. So sad that I damn near cried. It's unfortunate that I couldn't use my psych stats book to go along with the current class I am taking which is utilizing this junk.

I had this book for my Statistics I class. I've read every bit of the instruction on the book (I read everything not just what's on homework). At the end I realised I learned nothing I was still confused. Unless you have a good instructor to follow you through every step, you should skip it. This is NOT something for at home students.
Clear and well-organized, but compromised.......2005-02-26
Triola's book is, for the most part, an excellent choice for an intro stats course. As an instructor, I find it relatively easy to work with, and the included STATDISK gives students many opportunities to analyze large sets of data without having to enter hundreds of values into calculators or computers. It also contains a lot of examples taken from actual data sets; this is the text that will deflect that ubiquitous "what's this useful for in real life" question from students. A few issues, though, dog the book. In order of importance:
1 - Chapter 3-6, on counting methods is either underdeveloped or overdeveloped, depending on perspective. The short section gives an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink survey of the topic - permutations and combinations and such are dealt with in one fell swoop and followed up with only a smattering of problems, giving students little oportunity to fully digest the most mathematically-intense part of the course. If you're teaching this course to math majors, you'll need additional time and material for this section (I recommend Sullivan and Mizrahi's _Finite Mathematics_); if you're teaching humanities/social science majors, who are more concerned with data collecting and analysis, I'd recommend skipping this chapter entirely.
2 - The book makes such frequent references to the TI-83+ calculator that one is inclined to wonder if Triola is receiving kickbacks from Texas Instruments. Contrary to what the book would have you believe, it's not necessary to invest in this beast (retail price: >$100) in order to compute standard deviations and correlation coefficients; my students are managing just fine with their $15 calculators with statistical functions.
3 - In Chapter 4, there's some mention of the principle that if, under certain assumptions, the probability of an *observed event* is very low, then the assumptions are probably incorrect. There's some merit to that, to be sure (if all 1000 of my coin flips came up heads, it's natural to question the original assumption that my coin was fair), but Triola would do well to apply the critical thinking procedures exalted in Chapter 1 to elaborate on this. For instance: it's highly unlikely that Betty Terwilliger would have won the jackpot in the Lotto 6-49 if the contest wasn't rigged (probability: 1/14000000 or thereabouts), and yet, she did. (Similar arguments can be - and have been - used to defend intelligent design and astrology.) It's a subtle concept, one that deserves more attention than the cursory "this is the law, and it's important" treatment that Triola gives it.
4 - Some of the later chapters (Chapter 7 in particular) complicate matters unnecessarily. Chapter 7 expands on ideas presented in Chapter 5 and developed in Chapter 6; these connections are not exploited as much as they could be.
These flaws aside, _Essentials_ is a sound survey of the subject, one that's very nicely designed with its audience of humanities and social science majors in mind. The examples are timely, and the anecdotes are interesting and relevant. The book justifies the subject matter without getting bogged down in formality, which is an ideal balance for its intended audience. In the hands of a knowledgeable and experienced instructor with sufficient prep time, it provides very good support to a statistics course for non-majors, but it's not self-contained.

I teach statistics at 2 colleges. I use this book. It is outstanding in its clarity and mathematical depth. Students with strong math backgrounds will appreciate the fine logic developed by this book as it explains statistics. The word problems are outstanding and relevant to applications across broad fields of interests. The examples are explained thoroughly. This book is very well priced for the student who is struggling to pay tuition, fees, etc. Highly recommend this book to all serious students.

Excellent Statistics Textbook.......2007-08-30
For any professor that is looking to select a great intro statistics textbook, look no further. This is very easy to read and understand, even for the most extreme math/stat phobes. It is well organized and provides valuable references and tables in the appendices. The author, Mario Triola, does a wonderful job of exerting his enthusiasm for statistics into the text and relating the material to every day subjects. For instance, when describing time-series graphs the author uses data of declining numbers of drive-in movie theatres. You actually get a feel for his personality which is odd for a textbook author. He also writes of the various developments in statistics in a historical context, which helps the reader to remember and understand the importance of the subject matter.
I actually enjoyed reading this textbook and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great learning tool for the class.

Stunningly excellent book on basic statistics........2006-10-09
I've taken various probability/statistics classes as an undergrad at VA Tech, and as a grad student at GMU and MIT. This book is without question the best I have seen - by a long shot. Further, it provides the only thorough and rigorous explanation for hypothesis testing I have ever seen.
The theory and end of chapter exercises are as straightforward, clear and concise as you will get. The only manner by which this book could be improved would be by the inclusion of a rigorous proof as to why considerations regarding the degrees of freedom (dof) require that some equations have /n as a denominator while others have /(n-1).
Confusing, disjointed and too expensive in my opinion........2006-08-09
I teach Statistics for a living, and this book replaced the book by Weiers, a move that I have berated the folks that do our purchasing ever since. The other Stats lecturer felt the same, and we have ended up using old copies of the prior book.
For example, the book gives a miserly single page to explain Quartiles, and has very little in the way of examples that are helpful.
If you HAVE to have it because your school dictates, you have to have it, but if you want to buy a book for the purpose of teaching yourself Stats, look elsewhere.

Statistics is supposedly easy right...right! But who knew that a textbook would go to such lengths to make it harder!
The definitions of all the terms we have to deal with in statistics are written so poorly and write themselves in circles. Now, my reading comprehension is pretty high, but getting through these chapters is torture!
A word of advise, if you're taking a class using this book, DO NOT RELY ON IT! Take good notes in class and use this book only as a reference and for assigned work.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Assuming of readers only an undergraduate background in mathematics, it brings them from a starting knowledge of the subject to a knowledge of the basics of Martingale Theory. After learning Probability Theory from this text, the interested student will be ready to continue with the study of more advanced topics, such as Brownian Motion and Ito Calculus, or Statistical Inference. The second edition contains some additions to the text and to the references and some parts are completely rewritten.

This is an excellent and timely textbook on probability and martingale theory. There is an increasing need of thorough but concise treatise of probability theory for researchers and graduate students in Engineering, Economics, Statistics and Mathematical Biology. Very few textbook fill this need. Jacod and Protter succeeded in bringing together essential concepts and theorems in probability/martingale theory in a clear and lucid style and the book is completely self-contained: all necessary machinery from measure theory are explained and proved while providing a flavor of probabilistic way of thinking. Unlike Williams' "Probability with Martingales", all mathematical details are covered in the body of text. They present conditional expectation through Hilbert space approach and Radon-Nikodym theorem is proved at the end of the book using martingales. This is an indoctrinated way of showing how martingales are applied in other field of mathematics. Each chapter starts with pedagogical explanation of concept and summary of results. This helps reader grasp concepts and develop intuition. The topics, examples and exercises are carefully chosen and well organized. I found several but minor typos and discrepancy in the notation during the last five chapters. Yes, elegant proof is given for each theorem on martingales but rephrasing them may help make it clear where in the proof previous results are used and applied. Also, it would be a great idea to include introductory texts on stochastic calculus in the reference for the beginning students. Despite these minor suggestions, I recommend the book with enthusiasm. After reading this book, one can take their way immediately to stochastic calculus: Brownian motion and Ito calculus and their applications.

and I am still referencing it for things I already half-know and things I don't know. I have found this book to be, overall, very good. In regards to other math books, it is pretty easy to follow. In regards to probability and statistics books, it is about average, maybe a little better than average.
I currently use the book for reference and I will actually be reading over the parts we skipped in the course (Ch. 2 and 5, martingales and renewal theory) over the next month. I have given a couple attempts already at chapter 2, but now that I have a bit of time will be really pushing it. If my opinion of this book turns after reading these chapters, I will be certain to update this review.
I find the examples very instructive and the proofs to be often elegant. In the end, the book is pretty straight-forward for someone who has a good probability and reasonable linear algebra skills. Perhaps consider refreshing on linear algebra if a little fuzzy on it before going at this book, which will make Markov chains much easier.

A math book should be concise, clear and exact. This book is concise, unclear. It is rare to see a complete sentence for definitions or propositions. The definitions for terminology and notation are scattered through the book. This structure was perhaps deliberately planned, but it confuses readers deliberately too.

Rick Durrett has a very nice and intuitive approach, but unfortunately this book is full of typos.
This book has potential, but I want my money back........2000-12-16
Durrett's writing style in this book is innovative and casual. In each topic he develops the theory quickly, sometimes by delaying proofs until the end of the section. This allows him to quickly introduce examples (and there are many of them). For many results, he gives an intuitive explanation for why the result is true before proceeding with the proof.
However, the enormous amount of typos in this book are inacceptable. Springer should be ashamed for letting the book out the door in this condition. Durrett provides a reason for why the book might be filled with typos, but this is insufficient; the book should not have been released.
Also, a downside of his presentation style and ordering is that it is harder to trace the logic of the "grand scheme". In other words, it is hard to tell what results are needed to prove which theorems.
I haven't tried the majority of the exercises, but many of the ones I tried (some of which were assigned as homework) were routine and required little thought. A superficial glance at the other ones reveals that they all appear similar in nature, i.e. not that much variety.
I applaud Durrett for his lively, even engaging, writing style, but the bottom line is, this book needs work. I would not recommend it in this condition.
reasonable competition for Taylor & Karlin.......1999-09-21
Lots of typos.... The blurb on the Springer site is misleading: "this book presents recent results previously available only in specialized monographs." I have not seen anything in this book that is not in Taylor and Karlin or Lawlor's books. It's not bad mind you, just not as "leading edge" as the blurb says. If you're looking for that, try Bremaud's new "Markov Chains"
