Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

In the West, a bath is a place one goes to cleanse the body. In Japan, one goes there to cleanse the soul. Bathing in Japan is about much more than cleanliness: it is about family and community. It is about being alone and contemplative, time to watch the moon rise above the garden. Along with sixty full-color illustrations of the light and airy baths themselves, The Japanese Bath, delves into the aesthetic of bathing Japanese style and the innate beauty of the steps surrounding the process. The authors explain how to create a Japanese bath in your own home. A Zen meditation, the Japanese bath, indeed, cleanses the soul, and one emerges refreshed, renewed, and serene.

3 out of 5 stars Sources problem.......2007-05-07

Beautiful pictures and instructional text. However, one wonders why the authors included some of the "Resources" they did. Some of these have no website or catalogue. Example: Soko Hardware in San Francisco. So, if you don't live in the Bay Area, including them was almost useless. I would have liked to have seen more sources with which one can view and buy items.

This book will make you want to float oranges and blossoms in your bathtub (if that's the best you can do)--or better yet, find a way to construct your own beautiful bathing space. Interesting info about the history and substance of Japanese style bathing, both in terms of the physical act of soaking (and the difference between soaking and cleansing) and the sociological background and aesthetics of the time spent in the tub. The photos are gorgeous and the combination of the visuals and the texts stimulates every sense. A great read, and a great vehicle for dreaming of quieter, more peaceful times.

5 out of 5 stars One of a Kind.......2007-01-10

While this is one of the only English-language books thoroughly covering the Japanese bath, it would likely stand alone in a trove of similar books. Thoughtful, concise, and with A+ color photography, the book will fool you into thinking you can pick it up to get a few tips on building a bathtub--and before you know it, you're immersed in a lifestyle that defines the Japanese Bath.

Book Description

Getting Wet is a joyful, first-person plunge into Japan's bathing culture--joining the millions of Japanese who not only bathe everyday, but find it a must to traverse the country on a search for the perfect bathing experience. From bathing "theme parks" which come complete with tubs for your pets, to the luxurious dinners served in the rarified atmosphere of the most expensive hot spring resorts, to the calming effects of an odorous sea-water bath carved from an isolated coastline, the author draws on his travels to create a delightful, enlightening volume that goes beyond the scope of typical travel books on Japan. Readers follow the author on his skin-tingling (and sometimes electrifying) encounters as he reflects on the art of bathing in ancient times and the dos and don'ts of going au natural in contemporary Japan. The science of bathing--what hot water does to you, and your skin, and why. The truth behind the claims of healing powers. The unavoidable progression from simple nudity to the business of sex. And some reflections on how the bathing culture has changed and where it may be going. In a more practical vein, an afterword offers sage advice, guidelines, and other matters for those who actually may be thinking of testing out the waters.

Book Description

"This book is a physical work of art-as it should be, because the Japanese bath is an aesthetic event."- Whole Earth Review

Since its first publication in 1992, this book has become a curious classic, taking a -simple (yet often incorrectly performed) activity and depicting it with a graphic, manga-style edge. In twelve drawings a young Japanese man is shown preparing, rinsing, soaking, communing, relaxing, contemplating-all an encouragement to readers to slow down, ease into the hot water, and enjoy this timeless ritual of purity and release.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and necessary handbook!.......2007-05-17

I'll never forget the first time I went into a sento in Japan, mainly because it was an unqualified disaster. I had no idea what I was doing, and had no one to show me what to do. I tried my best to watch the other bathers to see what they were doing, but staring at a bunch of naked guys isn't exactly the best way to go. The worst part was that I didn't know enough to bring along my privacy towel. You have no idea how much that little piece of cloth matters when everyone else has one, and you don't. Oh, how I wish I had had this book beforehand!

"How to Take a Japanese Bath" is a simple guide, only 40 pages or so. Because of the fantastic illustrations, it is more like a manga than a book. Inside the rules of the bath are laid out in twelve simple steps, in an easy-going tone that doesn't talk down to you or lecture. It is pretty simple, if someone explains it to you as well as author Leonard Koren does here. In the back is a short overview of the history of bathing culture in Japan, and some basic Japanese phrases and kanji to help you navigate. It is, in short, everything you need to have a better experience than I did.

The illustrations are what really set this apart from being just a pamphlet. I have to wonder what editor selected Suehiro Maruo, a successful contemporary artist best known for his violent and somewhat disturbing artwork, to illustrate this pleasant little guide to a peaceful and relaxing pastime. Imagine going to Japan and finding a guide to eating a hamburger, illustrated by Clive Barker, and that is what you are getting.

4 out of 5 stars For the niche audience.......2007-03-13

Short and well illustrated, a good primer but definitely overpriced.
Look for used if possible or else borrow a copy and read.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Enjoyable, both for Japanese & Non-Japanese.......2001-11-13

As a Japanese, I find this small book to be very accurate and informative. The procedure and the idea behind Japanese bath taking is clearly explained, without the oft-found orientalism. This is exactly the bath taking manners that our parents teach their kids (well, at least they are supposed to).

Another great point about this booklet is the artist, Maruo. He is the Dario Argento of Japanese comics, known for his extremely detailed and beautiful drawings of the grotesque. In this book, you'll find a lot of very pleasant drawings about Japanese bath taking, but to the people who are used to his normal works, you sort of expect some blood, gore, beheadings and freakshows that are Maruo's signature themes at every turn of the page. Whether that expectation was satisfied was... I'll leave it up to you to find out.

Highly reccomended. Informative to non-Japanese (and the younger generation Japanese --- you kids have no idea how to properly take a bath these days, shame on you), and enjoyable to Japanese.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional aesthetic experience........2001-04-23

On a whim I bought this book for my fifteen-year-old daughter who is about to leave for Japan on an exchange student program. Our whole family delighted in the beautiful, gentle, and insightful explanation of this paramount of Japanese experiences. So clear, so charming, we could almost feel the sensory effects of this wonderful institution.

5 out of 5 stars This book is like a beautiful poem.......2000-08-12

Though this book has few words, it conveys the sense of the Japanese bath and bath ritual with exquisite illustration and word images. There is no other book I have found that deals with this subject matter in such a poetic, thorough, yet unsentimental manner. It was especially useful prior to my first visit to Japan. It helped make sense of a simple but somewhat mystifying cultural tradition.

1 out of 5 stars Not what you might think.......2002-11-12

I ordered the book because I am in the process of designing an O'Furo for my home, and I hoped to get some ideas. Sadly, there was very little in the book to help me. Instead, I was treated a taste of opinion from several rich Japanese, and a smattering of relevant photos.
The Section on Resorts was particularly poor. I lived in Japan for eight years and visited many wonderful onsen. None were in this book. Of the 35 pictures in this section, only 7 were of actual baths. The rest were of tatami rooms, meals served, sinks and counters, etc.
Perhaps the most disappointing part of the book was the section dedicated to Ukiyo E. Although parts of this wonderful artform are known to be pornographic, it is generally not an emphasis of the genre. Mr. Tsumura does not seem to think so, and has chosen to show a variety of pubic regions and breasts in nearly every picture in the section. The entire section was a failure of taste.
All in all, it is a highly disappointing book and I would not recommend spending any money on it.

Some books beg for space on the coffee table. It's the usual place snobby friends file away their copies of "Archetectural Digest", or "Forbes", hoping you'll never notice that the adress labels printed on them are marked out with felt-tip pen. If you hold them to the light, you can just make out that they were sent originally to the office of their dermatologist. In the case of "Furo, the Japanese Trendy Bath Life", this tome is most enjoyable read in its' natural environment. In my case the bathroom is definately the least trendy room in my apartment. Fortunately with the addition of this book, i can see my "sitting room" become a little trendier, perhaps. The photographs of various dauntingly expensive bathrooms are expansive, and beautiful. It definately takes my mind away from the fact that I'm usually reading it on a "throne" that wobbles, thanks to an iffy wax seal, and bolts that I can't be bothered to tighten. Tsumura can be given to some overly flowery writing at times. An example of this can be found on page 30. "Mrs. Ukita's neat white bathroom on the sea-side of Mediterranean Sea is a shining example of her family's happiness." "The hero and heroine of this script, Mr. and Mrs. Ukita, always smile softly as though they were characters in a film." This sort of prose, might tempt some to lunge at the Ukitas with a small hand axe. Those violent thoughts, however would probably be put to rest after a vigourous soak in their luxurious bathtub. As a final thought to lurkers, expecting a voyeuristic view of total strangers sitting naked in exotic pools of fragrantly scented water. You will be extremely dissappointed. For anyone interested in stunning portraits of lavish bathrooms, and their accoutriments, this just may be the book You've searched for all Your life.
