Pros:
1 - very well organized.
2 - great exercises help eliminate memorization. (although some amout of memorization is required).
3 - Helped me understand "wrong" project management practices. My favourite is the planning process. I have actually built my own little PM planning check list.
4 - Rita does an excellent job mixing concepts with examples, making reading the material a lot easier.
5 - if you are into project management, you will easily relate to a lot of concepts.
6 - great end of chapter review questions. (Some quite tricky)

Cons
1 - shameless advertising of other products is a bit of a turn off.
2 - There were times when I disagreed with Rita's point of view.
3 - Sometimes the end of chapter questions test you for english comprehension instead of project management skills. For example project manager is working on completing risk identification versus project manager has completed risk identification. The intent here is to deliberately trip the student.

Not sure whether this book was the reason for me passing or the PM PowerTrac CBT tool by Management Concepts (the company I work for has multiple licenses for this). I didn't really do much of the sample questions, I left that to PowerTrac; the content is pretty good though and is readable. I think the key to passing is to understand the structure of the questions and do a few example exams. All in all, my preparation for the exam was about a month, and I wasn't very disciplined either!

Yes I passed the exam at second attempt. One reason the exam has gotten tough do not expect the question to be as easy as those that are in exercise or simulation exam. For every question you really need to know the fundamentals(as per PMI principles!!). That leads to my second reason for failing, I used much popular Rita Mulacahy's PMP exam prep book. The real problem started when I used the even more expensive PMP fast Track by RMC, each simulation test question answer confused me further. I took the PMP exam and I answered most obvious question with wrong answer. My friend suggested me to forget all other material and focus on this book. This book clearly explains the fundamental behind each knowledge area followed by Input - tools & technique - output of process within this knowledge area. If you understand and remember these gudelines thoroughly you are ready for the exam. If you are lucky and get many math questions you can score up to 70% easily. One more book which helped me was Paul Sanghera's PMP in depth, if you are an IT professional then you may find reading paul's book quiet enjoyable. Good luck.

A great resource for explaining why the answers chosen in their sample exercises are correct or incorrect. This book help to solidify the readers understanding of the PMBOK.

Great book to pass the exam.......2007-08-17

I took PMP earlier this week and pass on the first try. This is a great book, easy to understand but it has its own drawbacks. My exam was really tough. I hardly had any math questions and all the exam questions were really lengthy with lengthy answers unlike the practice questions that appear as excercise and final exam. It was like mini reading comprehension on each question. So expect to see much harder questions that what is in the book. Good thing is that with PM experience and reading this book from begin to end, it will not be a problem to pass eventhough there will be many questions outside of this book. I don't know if the exam is getting tougher day by day or it was just my luck to see those kinds of questions.

Passed the PMP on the 1st try.......2007-07-28

A well organized book that will indeed prepare you to pass the PMP the first time. I reviewed this book from cover to cover twice. I took each chapter test two times and the 200 question test at the end of the book until I scored a 89%. Worth the money if your serious about being PMP certified.

With so many IT jobs being outsourced, I needed a competitive edge to remain marketable. I decided it was time to go for my PMP certification. I have a variety of study materials. However, I needed a guide to get me started in the right direction, without wasting much time. This guide provides a great overview of all the process areas. If you're truly serious about PMP Certification, then this guide will give you exactly what you need to get started. I highly recommend it.

Handy Reference.......2007-01-09

Project Management Knowledge Areas & Processes is simple, easy to use, and packed with information. I refer to this guide each time I start a new project to make sure I've covered all the major areas and processes in my project schedule. I usually refer to it a couple of times later in my project to be sure I didn't miss anything that I didn't include earlier in the project but now need as my project has changed. I still use many of Jami's guides that I got when I was studying for my PMP exam a few years ago (PMBOK version 2) and am glad to see that she has updated at least one of her guides for the current PMBOK (version 3).

Obsolete.......2006-09-06

This book is based on the, no longer available, PMBOK 2000 exam. While 85 - 90% of the material overlaps, you'll be using the wrong material and will end up getting questions wrong on the current exam.

Their accompanyning book, PMP Exam Cram 2, IS aligned to the new exam and says so on the cover. Do not confuse these two books.

Out of date........2006-04-25

Unless you would like to spend time studying for a version of the PMP exam that PMI no longer administers, stay away from this book (Practice Questions). I will verify what a few others have stated concerning the poor quality of the questions and the ironically spotty quality control in the product, but most relevant to my mind is that it deals with (some) topics that are no longer dealt with in the 3rd edition of the PMBOK. There are much better practice question options out there, but you may have to pay a little more for them.

The good and the bad.......2006-04-20

The Bad: As several others have reported, many of the questions are not good. Bad logic, old terminology, I found one where the short answer is incorrect and the 'detailed answer' has nothing to do with the question. Several of the questions were structured with a general PM statement followed by a single sentence question that was disconnected from the statement. For example: There are 50 states in the USA. What is the capital of New York?
The Good: The passing score for the PMP is 61%. If you can score better than 61% on these questions, you're ready for the exam.

Poorly written and inaccurate.......2006-02-05

Don't buy this book! Haven taken a PMP exam prep class and reviewed the actual PMBOK, I purchased this book to help reinforce my knowledge prior to exam day. After only 3 chapters I found over 10 mistakes. Examples include inconsistently referencing knowledge areas as process groups and using terminology from the old PMBOK edition. In addition, the questions were poorly written with answers that don't correspond to the question.

Overall this book is poorly edited and will confuse those without significant PM experience or formal PM / PMP education.

Try something else.

Inadequate for New PMP Exam.......2005-11-27

This book is a waste of money for the new PMP exam. Some of the questions/answers are poorly worded, while some contain flaws in logic. More important, some questions and answers are simply not correct for the new PMP exam. The questions are too general and not directly referenced to the PMBOK - that alone is a warning signal - absolutely no references to the PMBOK to support the author's answers. Warning: This book is not written for the new PMP exam given after October 2005. Pay a little more and get a more complete PMP prep book. I spent money on this book and feel very, very cheated.

Excellent thinking guide for the PMP.......2005-04-08

Ward's study guide for the PMP exam takes a different approach compared to Rita Mulcahy's world-reknowned book and CD. First, the questions are much longer than the real exam, attempting to provide the reader with the intellectual underpinnings of the project manager's role. Second, it provides many scenario-based questions that apply enormously with the actual exam.

I've read and heard many reviews that this study guide is far off the mark when it comes to the actual exam. For me, it provided a good way to think about the questions without jumping to the supposed right answer just to pass the exam. Project management success is heavily based on experience--the more and varied it is, the better chance of success you will have. Like management theorist Kurt Lewin stated: "There is nothing so practical as a good theory."

Outstanding resource.......2004-07-27

I went through the entire book several times in preparing for the PMP Exam and would have to rank it as one of the most consistently useful resources behind the PMBOK. Unlike some other practice exams that I used, I couldn't find a single error in this one.

In preparation for the PMP exam, I utilized this CD of PMP prep questions which I found to be very helpful. I thought the questions were challenging and extremely benefitial in my studying efforts. I really enjoyed being able to reference PMBOK to the questions and the explanations of the answers were insightful. I would highly recommend this CD.

Not Recommended.......2007-04-17

The PMP Exam practice test questions on this CD are ridiculous. Almost every question has grammatical errors and the question language is very basic, nothing like the questions I have seen on several other practice exams where the questions are much more sophisticated. There are not only many, many grammatical errors, but the PMI terms are often referred to incorrectly. The basic terms are there, but something is not quite right. This test seems to have been put together by someone that does speak English as their first language or maybe it has been translated from another language and something has been lost in the translation. I definitely do not recommend this CD for practice for the PMP exam.

I'd say the simulated exam is very helpful. Of course, the questions on the CD are totally different from the real exam questions, however, they gave me a major idea what to expect. There are a lot of negative-negative questions on the CD, so when I took the exam the questions like that didn't surprise me. Highly recommend.

It helps me to get ready for the PMP examination. I can customize the test and keep a good track of my own progress. By reviewing all the questions, answers & PMBOK references, I know which area I am strong and weak at so that I can get well prepared for the examination. It is an excellent source!

This set of CDs is very useful. There were tips here not in the 2 books that I also read in preparation for the PMP. Also, the 2 guys on the CD are easy to listen to - they remind me of the DJs on the radio in the movie Groundhog Day. They know what they are talking about and a few questions in particular were on the test almost exactly as they said they might be - phew, glad I listened to this first! I had to order this directly from ESI since it was not available on Amazon, but I'm glad I did. It is 9 CDs, but about 7 hours (or less). Good for commutes!

Great Study Aid.......2006-09-14

I loved these CD's... very entertaining and all the examples they used really stuck in my head. I played them all the time on my commutes and ended up listening to each CD 2x and then when it came to crunch time, I listened to sections that I didn't understand when studying from the book. I passed on the 1st try! Highly highly reccomend... worth it!

The Best Quick Review Book for the PMP Exam.......2007-09-23

I found this flashcard book the best among the two such books available in the market. It presents the quick review of your PMP exam preparation in a self contained, comprehensive, and logical way. As a companion to the PMP Study Guide, this book really helped me in passing the exam. Of course you cannot expect it to be a substitute to the Study Guide.

I used this book along woth my PMP study guide, and found it very comprehensive and useful. Lot better than Rita's Hot Topics because this one is very self contained and covers more. Unlike Rita's book, It's not tied to a specific study guide. Helped me a lot in passing the exam. However, it's not an alternative to a study guide.

Not very helpful.......2007-09-10

I purchased this product as a supplement to PMP Exam Prep, Fifth Edition: Rita's Course in a book. . . . and the ESI Class I took. I really did not find this book very helpful at all. Most of the topics weren't even covered on my version of the PMP exam that I took. I would not recommend this book as a study aid.

The flashcards are good but I wish the book was set up in a tear-out flashcard format. The book is a bit bulky and hard to open.

I found this study kit to be INDISPENSABLE in my pursuit of obtaining a PMP certification. The presentation of the material follows a logic completely different from that of the PMBOK: The study guide is arranged to follow the "flow" of the project from Initiation through Closing (the PMBOK is arranged by knowledge areas). There is also a set of Rapid Review modules at that back of the study guide to help one "cram" for the exam. The posters are a must for anyone who is serious about passing the certification test because they arrange all of the information into logical "modules" that can be referenced with ease.
I found the cds that were included to be especially helpful because I cannot always sit and study as I would like. The audio presentation made review a snap! (The packet includes DVDs as well, but I haven't used those, so cannot comment on their usefulness.)

The TSI Ultimate PMP Home Study Kit is very thorough in its coverage of the PMI standard and processes. It helped me to understand what is needed to pass the PMP Exam. Although it is repetitive at times, I think that helps you remember the important information for the exam. The posters that come with the kit are good for referring to while you study. Overall, I think this kit is a good deal if you study on your own.
