5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2007-05-27

Winter of the Ice Wizard is a great Magic Tree House book. It begins when Jack and Annie get a note from Merlin. They end up with Teddy and Kathleen at the castle of the Ice Wizard. There, they learn that he wrote the note and had kidnapped Merlin and Morgan. In order to save them, they have to find the Ice Wizard's eye. They recieve directions to go to the Hollow Hill, and they do, in the ice Wizard's sleigh. They find the eye and give it to the Wizard. He is sad and mad because they eye doesn't work. Then Teddy and Kathleen bring in the swan maiden, the Wizard's sister, and she tells him that she will forgive him. Then his eye works. They are given back Merlin and Morgan, and the mission is over.

I think that this is a great book. Winter of the Ice Wizard is my favorite Magic Tree House book!

I will leave the story so find out more in this story yourself. At the end he got his eyeball but still could not see but when he almosts destroys them Kathleen and Teddy boght back his daghter and she gives back his heart, And then he can see! Using her own quintessential winter house as an example, Moss demonstrates how rich, patterned fabrics, gorgeous tableware, and other unique design details combine in a warm and sumptuous environment.

Within Winter House are spaces for every purpose, from inviting areas designed to accommodate festive gatherings of family and friends to calming escapes for private relaxation and reflection. 2 out of 5 stars Succeeded in turning a great theme into a boring book of clichés........2007-08-18

Rarely have I been so disappointed when receiving a book. 'Nouveau riche' is a great understatement. The author needs some serious help in modesty, taste and self-restraint... a 101 course on imagination and creativity wouldn't hurt either. She has succeeded in turning a great theme into a boring book of clichés.
I really wish I could get my money back... what a waste!

2 out of 5 stars Did not like it.......2007-06-28

The book is about the authors own house. There is no sign of taste, culture, tradition or education. Its just noveau riche.

Love the book and the pictures. Romantic, cozy and a reminder how much I love the winters of the north! A "feel good" book!

As a person who changes my family room decor seasonally, I really appreciate the "winter" theme ideas in this book. It is a great match for my tastes, and the cover looks perfect on my coffee table!

5 out of 5 stars a personal favorite.......2007-02-20

I bought one, read it in our "winter house" and loved it so much I bought a second copy to read during the rest of the year when we're at the seashore. The photographs, the text, the "feel" of the book are all inspiring and I return to it again and again.

Book Description

Florida’s architectural history can be traced to the Spanish colonial settlement of St. Augustine in the mid-16 century, while the state’s architectural development reached its mature stage in the 19th century. Casa Florida is an exuberant, full-color celebration of the enduring influence of Spanish architecture and design upon Florida’s resorts, private houses, and gardens.
Casa Florida explores the earliest influences of the Spanish style in the Sunshine State, its revival in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and its contemporary expression in architecture today, with a strong focus on the style’s unifying concept of fantasy and Florida’s unique tendency to inspire enraptured states of mind and spectacular built environments. Susan Sully provides colorful history and anecdotes that complement Steven Brooke’s magnificent full-color photography of the region’s signature style in examples representing the entire state and ranging from the charming to the splendid.

This book has a terrific collection of photos of old Florida, Tuscany-type homes. We've looked all over for a book like this. Hope others enjoy it as much.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Architecture a la Florida is Different than California.......2006-03-11

The first town in the New World was in Florida and it was a Spanish town. Since then the Spanish influence on the arthitecture and culture of Florida has been large.

In this book a selection of buildings has been carefully selected to illustrate the history of Spanish-style structures from across the state. From an age standpoint, there are some quite old (but certainly not run down) homes varying up through some modern homes built using traditional styling. A few commercial buildings such as hotels are also included.

From a style standpoint, the homes of Florida seem to have been influenced more by a Mediterranean, even Moorish, look than the Spanish architecture houses more common in the Western States that have more of a Mexican influence.

Beautiful pictures beautifully printed on a high quality matte finished paper add a warmth to the book that glossy magazine style printing imparts.

5 out of 5 stars book review.......2006-03-10

we are having a new villa style home built and have gotten many wonderful ideas from the camera art in this book. page after page of wonderful spanish/mediterranean homes are pictured in this beautiful volume.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Mansions Oh My!.......2006-03-07

In my hunt for more information on Spanish Style homes, (I own a bungalow in California), I have been frustrated at the limited amount of books out there. I work at a Library, and many of the patrons share the same frustrations. In order to be able to find books on these subjects, I have had to self-teach about the many surrounding subjects; ie, tiles, Mexico, Moorish, Morocco, Spain, etc. This book is one of the better ones. It has beautiful pictures on how to decorate and landscape. I learned that air-conditioning changed architecture in a substantive way. I had also never heard about concrete ceilings made to look like wood before, apparently a Florida staple, due to humidity. These houses are oh-my-Gorgeous! The only problem was that the author frequently discussed beautiful rooms and details of the houses, then didn't show pictures. Maybe/hopefully, they're saving those pics for a follow-up book on interiors and details? I agree with the previous reviewer, how about a book now on Florida Spanish bungalows?

5 out of 5 stars It's About Time!.......2005-12-21

I have been waiting a long time for a book like this! While the Spanish style homes of California have been documented in numerous books, the large amount of this architecture that was built in Florida during the same period has never gotten the amount of press it deserves. There are books on the architecture of Addison Mizner and a few other noted Florida architects, but nothing comprehensive on the style that was so prevalent during the boom years, and which was used in big cities like Miami and much smaller towns all over the state. This book covers houses from Miami to Winter Park and gives a nice overview of the style. I was very impressed not only by the amazing photographs, but by the histories that went along with each home featured. These histories allow the reader to put the home into its proper context and can be used as guides for people like me that are restoring similar homes. I wasn't as impressed with the newer homes in the back of the book, but there are only three relatively modern houses covered, so it does not take much away from the overall content. Since many of the homes built in this style were smaller bungalows it would have been nice to have seen some of them included, but the homes pictured are stunning! This book is must have.

This was given as a present to the Mumbulla School for Stiner Education. All the girls and one boy who have read it so far have told me that they loved the book. They are also asking to hire the other books in the searies that they havent read yet.

Wonderfull for ages 8-12yrs.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Engaging.......2006-12-02

Of all the Little House books, this one seems to evoke the strongest emotions. Whether it's cold, hunger or just admiration for the family. This book is an experience and one that you'll remember long after you're done.

More than all of that, this is a book to listen to. From the beginning of the whir of the mowing machine to the singing on the last page, you hear this book. The blizzards howl and screech, threads sing together like music, voices of strangers in the street, the coffee mill grinds on endlessly. Pa loses his "voice" when his hands are too roughened by twisting hay to play the violin. Throughout all is the music made by singing, speaking and the routine of life, against the voices in the blizzard. Many times the family sang or recited in order to hear themselves and fight against the howling winds.

When I first read this book as a girl, I remembered the cold and how Laura had to twist that hay just to survive and stay warm. Now as an adult, I admire the family dynamics. Caroline and Charles always stayed positive and strong. They didn't argue, they only figured out a way to get them by. When the weather got any of the family down, someone else gave them courage. Laura really developed in this story as well. It was the first time that I could recall her using Ma's words, "alls well that ends well" after the slough incident. She showed more responsibility and discipline than she had to this point.

The story is simply told, not with big words but with a big view on life. The pacing keeps you turning pages, even without our modern day cliffhangers. The best part is this book is clean and portrays good values while not being preachy. I would recommend this to anyone of any age. Just make sure you snuggle before reading because when you're done, you'll feel as if you had gone through it as well.

4 out of 5 stars You should try this book!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-01

if you like reading books about animals and people who work hard to get what they want, then you will like this book. I like this story, personally, because it tells a story about a family caught in a blizzard with little food and no places to go to get food because there are no trains and there is hardly anything for them to do but wait. You should try this book because you will love the story about a family who is fighting to save their lives. I guarantee you will enjoy reading "The Long Winter".

This book is a winner! It has so much adventure you have to read it!!
It will bring shivers down your spine! Not to to mention a smile on your face when you finish it!! Come on, you have to buy this exciting book! When you read it your heart will be touched how the Ingalls family stuck together! This book creates suspense and joy to it's readers. If you like Laura Ingalls Wilders other books you will love this one!

3 out of 5 stars A very cold book.......2006-09-23

This book makes me shiver everytime we read it. It kept blizzarding and nothing ever happened much, except for they thought the train was going to come and then it blizzarded again, so it couldn't. The coldness was described well, though, and I liked the part where the Indian was right. If you want to cool off on a hot summer day, I highly suggest reading this.

5 out of 5 stars Covers Basics and provides the links you need.......2007-08-13

I read this book because of my interest in peak oil and I enjoyed Mike Winter's coverage of the issues and the preparations that can be done to mitigate the effects of peak oil. I would recommend this book to anyone coming to the peak oil issue and wonders what they can do to prepare themselves.

    5 out of 5 stars A best buy.......2007-04-19

This is the scout's handbook--for grown ups. A best buy. It's not just for peak oil prep, but also for coming climate and economic changes. Effects of all three changes are already evident, and they're bound to increase soon.

A comprehensive (growing, preserving, and eating food, and dealing with waste; water; pet care; transportation) and far-reaching book (bartering; population; societal cycles). I also liked the tips on changing our individual behaviors that increase global problems.

By providing lots of online links to accessible information instead of filling space with lists and dense text, Winter used page space efficiently--organizing the layout and text for easy access.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here.......2007-03-24

The crisis literature is exploding and this is just one of the bombs. The pitch is simple and if you stop to ask yourself about the evidence in support of this henny penny school of doom, you will find little. The global warming is likely cyclical. Yes, oil will go up in price, no you can not change your life style without great risk. There will be changes (always are), we can not predict the adjustments that will work. We cope by getting out of debt and managing our lives conservatively, not by making radical life style shifts that we must undo later. Mick Winter does no one a service with his advice.

5 out of 5 stars Less is More.......2007-03-11

I really enjoyed Mick's Peak Oil Prep. First, it is extremely clear and easy to read. Second, it provides simple, inexpensive and practical advice on what we can do, individually, to make a difference. Third, it can be read as a reference book or as a straight read. Reading nonfiction is often a chore for me, as I usually lose my thread of thought when I lay fact-based works down; this book has such short, independent sections that putting it down and picking it up again is a delight, rather than a chore. This is also aided by the sense of humor throughout the book. Thanks for a fun and useful book to guide us through the rough times. CGY

5 out of 5 stars Doing it at my own speed.......2007-03-08

The neat thing about Mick Winter's book is that I can choose a simple response form the "Three Things You Can Do" or go all the way. And thanks to Mick, I don't have to spend a lot of time searching; he's already done it for me. So I can now go gradually into some necessary behavior change, or -- if one area matters more to me -- I can really alter my lifestyle! The tools are all here, and the choices are mine.

      Book Description

America once had a love affair with bungalows -- and it's being rekindled coast to coast. This elegant book showcases exceptional examples and features a catalogue of period furnishings.

With a flaming fire in the cozy hearth, a comfortable Morris chair, and soft, natural colors everywhere, bungalows have long embodied the ideal of the American home. At the turn of the century they took the country by storm, providing well-designed and well-priced shelter nationwide. Bungalows revolutionized residential architecture in America and grew into a beloved symbol of domesticity by offering stylish yet affordable housing for the average person. Today whole neighborhoods of bungalows are being saved and restored by people who appreciate the simple and natural lifestyle made possible by these small houses.

Beautifully illustrated with more than three hundred color photographs, American Bungalow Style presents two dozen American houses that capture the bungalow spirit. Many are Arts and Crafts in style, others show a touch of Spain or colonial America, and all exemplify the charms that enticed thousands of bungalow buyers during the form's heyday from 1880 to 1930. Among the bungalows included are examples by famous architects from Frank Lloyd Wright to Bernard Maybeck, as well as Gustav Stickley's own log cabin retreat. Many are the work of anonymous but skilled builders, and some were ordered by mail.

Bungalows may differ widely in style and size, but they have in common a simplified plan that places most of the living spaces on one floor. They are typically one or one and a half stories high, low in profile, and fitted with lots of built-ins and all the conveniences of their time. On their own piece of land, with a garden in front or back and space to park a car, bungalows provided the privacy and independence that many Americans favor.

The idea that simplicity and artistry could harmonize in one affordable house spurred the bungalow's popularity -- a rare movement in which good architecture was found outside the world of the wealthy. Bungalows allowed people of modest means to achieve something they had long sought: respectability. With its special features the bungalow filled more than the need for shelter. It provided fulfillment of the American dream.

A fully illustrated appendix features more than one hundred furnishings suitable for bungalows and Arts and Crafts houses. This special catalogue section highlights modern reproductions of tables and chairs, lamps, textiles, wall coverings, tile, and hardware that look right at home in bungalows old and new, commodious and compact.

      5 out of 5 stars Bunglopedia........2004-04-06

If your curious like me to what exactly is a Bungalow, what their history is, and would like to see lots of full colour examples, then I think you will find this book quite satisfying. Being that there where so many Bungalows built over such a wide geographic area, I doubt if anyone has covered every example of them in one book. So you may end up wanting to buy a few other books (which there are lots of good ones) to satisfy your curiosity. Non the less, this book does give you a good example of American and some Canadian Bungalow history, also it explores each room of the Bungalow and the rooms furnishings, all with quite a few excellent photo's.

4 out of 5 stars In keeping with the architecture..........2000-03-06

Wonderful photographs; light, informative reading. What's missing is a better representation of the different regional examples of the bungalow. And they're everywhere.

Residing in the Chicago area, for example, we have a tremendous variety and number of bungalows. Even in Atlanta, a region more famous for its colonial architecture, I noticed that the Virginia Highlands area also had some marvelous examples of the bungalow style.

A more appropriate title would be "The California Bungalow" given that nearly all of the examples are located there (and within that state, in Pasadena).

In other words, worth getting but not the definitive book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent photographs of Bungalow period interiors........1999-09-04

This book defines the Bungalow style, explains how it started and flourished, and tells about the men who built and sold them. Then it takes you into still-existing Bungalows across the USA, where the current owners have preserved the period style. Hundreds of beautiful, full-color photographs showcase these homes and give the reader a good feel for the American Bungalow style. At the end of the book there is a list of suppliers, sources of information, and further reading that I found useful also.

5 out of 5 stars Makes the reader want to go out and purchase a bungalow!.......1999-07-21

This has to be one of the best books on art and architecture ever produced. Through hundreds of gorgeous photographs and detailed description, the history and development of the American Arts and Crafts movement comes alive. The author remains sensitive to the fact that most bungalow owners of the early 20th century were not following any set "style," but maintained and decorated their homes according to their personal tastes and means. The result is a presentation which would inspire any current bungalow owners to cherish and preserve their homes as they would works of fine art. In addition, this book contains a handy catalogue appendix listing businesses that deal in reproduction Craftsman style furniture, wallpaper, tiles, fixtures, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book and coffee table book in one!.......1997-06-12

This book provides preservationists and homeowners alike with valuable information on the architecture and associated style of bungalow homes from the turn of the century through WWII. This is not strictly a history text nor is it strictly a coffee table book. A reader can take pleasure simply from the sheer beauty of the photography -- yet each photograph illustrates important design elements that may be found in bungalow architecture, allowing for careful study. The text, concisely written, provides excellent information on bungalow architecture and furnishings, both from an artistic and social perspective. The book begins with a simple overview of bungalow architecture. It then features photography and detailed text on a number of outstanding bungalow homes in the United States, focusing primarily on those found in California, Chicago, and rarer cases the East Coast. It concludes with a very brief section on currently available Craftsman styled furnishings. As a reference book and style guide, this is an excellent resource that I highly recommended. If you are seeking detailed historic information on Gustave Stickley, the Arts and Crafts Movement, etc., the text is not exhaustive. It is very specific in its scope and presents its subjects quite well -- the American bungalow. If anything, this book is best used to inspire current bungalow owners of the possibilities contained in these remarkable homes

Forty of the 120 pages are Checklist and Graphic Guidelines. It is nice to have them in one place; they are detailed, incorporating issues such as the environment. Accept for grab bars, etc. there is not much that I would consider of "modest or no additional cost," as the book jacket purports. Focus is on open floor designs, but also has tighter schemes. Great photos are matched with good information, that I haven't found elsewhere.

AS with all the Mallory stories, this keeps you interested and intrigued. It has a few surprises for the reader and Mallory lover. She never ceases to surprise and grow...

      5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-08-31

Have read many of Carol O'Connell books and enjoyed them all. I really like the characters and how they manage to get along with Mallory.

      1 out of 5 stars Strange book.......2007-08-07

I read this book and read it again months later. I still can't figure out how the author wants us, the readers, to take this literary endevour. It is to some extent totally illogical and it appears that the author smoked some serious weeds while writing it and totally forgot how to make all the tangled webs she wove come together. Still it has a haunting excitement about it and therefore an acceptable read. Even if you spend the next two days thinking about things like: And why did she include this? or why that? Which turn out to have no connection to what is happening in the story when looked at in hindsight.

      2 out of 5 stars Psychotic fantasy.......2006-02-04

This is the first "Mallory" novel I've read, so I come to it with a fresh perspective. I found the novel disappointing after the opening scene. This female detective rages around trampling all vestiges of proper police procedure, and all the male cops (notoriously hard to intimidate in real life) are intimidated by her and constantly yield to/coddle her behavior. I found it completely unbelievable. Mallory wouldn't last a day in a real police department, even if her daddy was a cop. Big-city police departments do not hand out detective positions as a form of psychotherapy for the emotionally troubled.

The setting for the story was evocative, though, and I really wanted to enjoy this, but found myself enduring it instead.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-09-27

I hated for the book to end, it was one of the best books I've read in a long time. I would like to see Charles and Kathy with a budding romance in the next book, they make a nice couple. The mystery was unique and the characters well thought out. My first book by Ms. O'Connell but definitely not my last. Mallory is one of the most interesting, not to mention best lead characters I have read about in a long time, and Charles, Riker and the poker club are just wonderful permanent characters to the book. Can't wait for the next book, I'll be looking for it.
