Who are the world's most exciting up-and-coming architects? 10 x 10_2 has 100 definitive answers, provided by 10 influential curators, educators and architectsincluding Zaha Hadid, Toshiko Mori, and Kurt Foster. Each featured architect is allotted four generously sized, photo-rich pages, with concise yet informative texts. The projects are distinguished by a rare combination of inventiveness, thoughtful use of materials and sheer beauty. In Zurich, Christian Kerez stacked and cantilevered solid concrete shear walls between large expanses of glass to create a multifamily residence of pristine structural integrity. In Minneapolis, Vincent James Associates Architects endowed a boathouse with the rhythm of repeated trussed beams, inspired by the activity of rowing. SPBR Arquitetos' glass-and-wood dental clinic in São Paulo features a transparent facade, designed to win the trust of neighborhood residents. In Tokyo, Tezuka Architects designed the space-saving Wall-less House, a steel-frame structure supported only by the central utility core and two columns. Among the more futuristic approaches are ONL's glass-and-metal highway sound barrier housing an industrial building in The Netherlands; New York-based Evan Douglas' fluid architectural elements, created by digital morphing; and Beijing-based Fake Design's dramatically scaled geometric stone formations for a riverside development in China. As a stimulating bonus, each member of the curatorial team offers an annotated list of 10 personal cultural influences, which range from John Berger's classic, Ways of Seeing, to films by Wim Wenders and the architecture-rich city of Chicago. Biographies of the 100 architects are also included. The only drawback of this splendid book, the second in a series, is its eccentric typeface. Stretched across overly long lines of body text and captions, it makes for eye-straining reading. --Cathy Curtis

Book Description
Since the release of the critically acclaimed 10x10 five years ago, the world of architecture has evolved: Advances in technology and research continue to produce increasingly sophisticated forms; advances in communication have resulted in decentralized, multicity architecture offices; and an impressive crop of young architects is emerging from countries with comparatively little previous recognition in the field, such as Slovenia, South Korea, and China. Many of the architects featured in 10x10 including Asymptote, Shigeru Ban, and MVRDVhave become established fixtures on the international scene, opening the way to a new generation of talent. With the expertise of a highly knowledgeable and high-powered group of curators, 10x10_2 picks up where its predecessor left off.
10x10_2 is a comprehensive and global view of new architecture, presenting the work of 100 up-and-coming architects in 28 countries, selected by 10 of the world's best-informed architectural critics. Organized in A-Z order, the book introduces each architect or studio on four pages that include photographs, drawings, and accompanying text written by the critics. Although some of the architects are beginning to gain worldwide recognition, others have achieved acclaim in their own countries for their work over the past five years. The selection in this volume features more than 250 buildings and projects, including recently built work as well as those currently under construction and due for completion. The effects of the global economy and political shifts are also evident in the book's selection, which includes several architecture studios in Slovenia, South Korea, and China. Also notable is a widespread move toward multi-location architecture collectives such as Servo, Ocean North, and n-o-m-a-d, which take advantage of a network of contacts in key cities around the world.
10x10 _2 also includes 10 original essays written by the critics that express their views on current architectural issues. In addition, each critic has chosen 10 cultural referencesfrom designed objects to film, theory, and literaturethat exemplify the range of influences on today's rapidly changing design environment. The complete list of these references as well as one reading from each critic is reproduced in the book, which concludes with complete biographical information on each critic and architect/firm, as well as an index.
Customer Reviews:
extreme contemporary.......2007-05-13
The publishers did a fine job on the quality of this book. Although 10x10 was not at all what I was looking for others may find it useful. I found that it had extremely contemporary design throughout, current and old. Its focus was more on the very soul and defenition of contemporary that is shown in form. I am not a designer or architecht, but am sure that type of person would get more from the book than I did. Basically I was looking for a collection of ideas that could some how be implemented into other forms, but I was not successful. All I could see was page after page of a revolving theme that I now know does not appeal to me in its purest form..
Another Great Book.......2007-03-20
Im an architecture student at the University of Florida and this book, including 10x10 are a must have. Simple as that. Full of pictures and small captions describing projects. Great for a student in design courses.
Refreshing.......2006-03-29
As a web designer, going through this book of beauifully designed homes and buildings give me layout and design ideas. Full color with large pictures and descriptions, I would reccomend this book for starting architects.
Spectacular.......2006-01-20
I am currently a design student - and this is an indispensible resource for recent and fairly obscure architecture. Has full rich photos and a wealth of information inside. Great selection of buildings as well. The photos can be used for ideas on detailing to spacial organization. I highly recommend this to anyone who needs to get a fresh breath of air and clean out the cobwebs. Everytime I close it I am ready to design.
Wonderful book.......2005-04-23
I was thrilled when I received this book. Being an architect myself, I appreciated the excellent photos and disussion of the featured persons in my profession. A wonderful book that will be a worthwhile read for anyone with an admiration or even mild curiosity in the subject. Highly recommend.

Book Description
Apple says that Mac OS X 10.3 introduces 150 new features--but that's not really true. In fact, "Panther" includes many more than that. It's faster, more polished, and much more efficient. But it still comes without a manual. With 300,000 copies in print, the first two versions of this book became industry bestsellers. Now David Pogue brings his humor and expertise to this completely rewritten, greatly expanded edition. It covers:
-
Getting started. The early chapters demystify the Dock, windows, and the unfamiliar Mac OS X folder structure--an ideal introduction.
-
New technologies. Mac OS X 10.3 brings breakthroughs in window management (Expose, the Sidebar); security (File Vault, Secure Empty Trash); and productivity (faxing, Fast User Switching).
-
Bonus software. Panther comes with over 50 free programs--and this book gives you expertise in all of them. This beefed-up edition includes all-new mini-manuals on iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto, iChat AV, and Safari.
-
Basics of Unix. You can completely ignore Panther's Unix core. But if the command line intrigues you, this book offers a gentle introduction.
-
Finding familiar features. Two "Where'd It Go?" Dictionaries make it easy for Mac OS 9 and Windows refugees to look up a traditional feature--and find out where it went in Mac OS X 10.3.
As always, Mac OS X: The Missing Manual offers warm, witty writing, and bursts with the shortcuts, surprises, and design touches that make the Mac the most passionately championed computer in the world.

Panther help is on the way!.......2005-09-12
This is not the first user manual, by David Pogue, that I have purchased. I rely on these publications to not only give me the basics, but also a more advanced understanding of new and unfamiliar Mac operating systems. Get to know Panther with the help of David Pogue!
Mac OS Panther, The Missing manual.......2005-09-04
Excellent help so far. Our school IT administrator was so impressed he is ordering a copy for the staff. I never realised you could continue to burn info, images etc onto an ordinary cd! The Expose feature pointed out in this book is brilliant for quick access to school reports. I am not very familiar with the MacIntosh computers but this book is going to be a great source of info for OSX.
Bilingual.......2005-05-03
I'm becoming bilingual--I'm learning to speak Apple as well as Windows. I just got a new iMac G5. Apple basically tells you to learn the system by pushing all the buttons to see what they do. Yeah, right. I also have the XP Missing Manual. This is a good series, a lot better than the Dummie series, if you really are a dummie. The organization is good and there is a lot of information, starting with the basics and going from there.
A superb book........2005-04-25
In section 3.5, David Pogue writes "In some ways, just buying a Macintosh was a renegade act of self-expression...", I believe it says it all! :)
David really knows what he's talking about. I've tried almost every tip/trick/gem he gives in this superb book and it worked. The missing manual is great book for a stunning operating system and a fantastic computer.
This book is highly recommended for folkes who are really interested in knowing how to work with Mac OSX. Worth the $.
Cheers.
Save your time -- This is the only book you need.......2005-03-30
I recently decided to make the switch from PC to Mac. The last time I had a Mac was 1997, which was the era of System 7. I have browsed seven -- count them, seven -- books now on Mac OS X Panther, and I can tell you without a doubt that this is the only book you need if you're new to Mac and/or switching from Windows (or Linux, for that matter).
Most of the other books (including
Mastering Mac OS X and the
Robin Williams Mac OS X Book) provided nothing more than ancillary, high level information that a third grader would know. None told you anything that 15 minutes playing around wouldn't, and 85% of most targeted new users. Seriously, do you really need to know the top of the mouse is called the "button" (graphic included) and how to "click" and/or -- wait for it -- double-click this button? Seriously, it sounds crazy, but these other books actually spend chapter after chapter on elementary concepts such as how to click the mouse and how to drag-and-drop an icon.
The Missing Manual (this book), instead seems to target the average computer user. I found the writing much easier to read (mainly because I didn't have to browse through pages of elementary instruction), and important information like keyboard shortcuts and using the terminal were easier to find. When I'm reading a 700+ page book, it's very important for me to be able to browse (or speed read) quickly. I found this book very condusive for that.
If you're a software developer (like me), I might suggest two other books that build on the foundation covered by this book.
Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther is a great book for transitioning to the terminal/console included in OS X.
Mac OS X Panther in a Nutshell is another great book because over half of it is spent on Unix tools like vi and bash, and includes a full reference of commands at the end. Like all the books in the Nutshell series, the sections are tabbed on the side, making it very easy to flip to a particular section. However, I do not recommend either of these books for non-developers or for someone looking for a foundation of Mac OS X.
If I could give this book ten stars and burn the rest, I would.
I hope the information proves useful.

Customer Reviews:
A great book for the new Mac user........2007-01-26
It's probably too basic and not technical enough for the real "geeks" out there, but for someone who just wants to use their Mac and run applications on it, the book is more than adequate. Very easy to read and it makes a great reference book. Diagrams and color illustrations are excellent.
An excellent book.......2006-02-25
It is excellent as far as it goes. I wish it was somewhat easier to use by being more complete.
About Mac.......2006-01-30
I like Robins ways of teaching, and her book is great. For me it is a bit confusing as I have to keek refering back to other sections. Otherwise great.
Poor effort.......2005-12-11
Robin Williams usually does a superb job - she's fun to read, has a perspective which is easy for the reader to understand and puts information clearly while not talking down to readers.
Not this time. If you want a book which tells you more than the very simplest of info about Tiger, don't buy this one. I'm an intermediate level user and I found that there are many glaring gaps in her lessons. I ran into many snags in getting used to switching over from System 9 and she didn't address any of the problems. Nor was her basic information about how Tiger operates useful in helping me trouble shoot the problems.
I wouldn't recommend the book to a new user either, because it was so superficial.
A minor irritant is that the editor (or somebody) did a very poor job of proofing it. There were a significant number of typos throughout the book.
Basic Basic Basic.......2005-07-20
The best I can say about this book is that the author seems to mean well and writes with a light, fun style. If you're a VERY brand new Mac user AND if you're intimidated by more advanced technical information, this book may be for you. Otherwise, save your money and you'll get better info from the various 'help' screeens on the Mac itself.

I returned it before looking at it. Did not receive in the condition I ordered.
Well worth having in your library.......2007-04-01
This is an excellent how to book for both beginners and intermediate users
of Macintosh OSx Tiger. It covers most of the required information in an
easy to understand and use fashion. Explanations are detailed enough to get
the job done without being too technically heavy.
It would be very suitable as well for anyone switching from using Windows
All things considerwed this book is a good investment and a good way to get
into using OSx Tiger.
to using OSx.
Excellent Book.......2005-08-10
Ms. Langer has done it again with this new book. I am new to Mac and definitely this is a very good book compare to some of the other ones I was thinking.
Thanks,

Good book for the new MAC user.......2005-05-25
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger : Visual QuickStart Guide (Visual Quickstart Guides)
This Is a good book for beginners. It covers everything that the newbie MAC user is going to need to know to install MAC OS X Tiger, using and exploring the MAC, installation, configuration settings, system preferences, login options, security options, keychain access, games and how to play them, networking, Finder, Fonts, Dash board, creating widgets, Spotlight, Sherlock, MAC utilities, installing printers (local and networked), Bluetooth, UNIX commands, terminal. You name it covers it in basic terms designed for the beginner MAC user. It does a very good job of covering all the basics of MAC OS X system including the applications that come with Tiger.
The book does not go into the technical aspects of what drives Tiger, it is solely for the beginner to intermediate user.
As with most Peachpit press books there are ample graphical images in each section to guide you through the chapter. This book does have everything for the beginner. I would rate this book 4.5 stars for the beginner , 3 stars for the intermediate user (there is some stuff here for the intermediate users with regard to the new applications) and 1 star for the advanced user. Because this books stated audience is the beginner to intermediate user I would rate this book at an overall rating of 4 stars.

Book Description
Learning Cocoa with Objective-C is the "must-have" book for people who want to develop applications for Mac OS X, and is the only book approved and reviewed by Apple engineers. Based on the Jaguar release of Mac OS X 10.2, this edition of Learning Cocoa includes examples that use the Address Book and Universal Access APIs. Also included is a handy quick reference card, charting Cocoa's Foundation and AppKit frameworks, along with an Appendix that includes a listing of resources essential to any Cocoa developer--beginning or advanced. Completely revised and updated, this 2nd edition begins with some simple examples to familiarize you with the basic elements of Cocoa programming as well Apple's Developer Tools, including Project Builder and Interface Builder. After introducing you to Project Builder and Interface Builder, it brings you quickly up to speed on the concepts of object-oriented programming with Objective-C, the language of choice for building Cocoa applications. From there, each chapter presents a different sample program for you to build, with easy to follow, step-by-step instructions to teach you the fundamentals of Cocoa programming. The techniques you will learn in each chapter lay the foundation for more advanced techniques and concepts presented in later chapters. You'll learn how to:
- Effectively use Apple's suite of Developer Tools, including Project Builder and Interface Builder
- Build single- and multiple-window document-based applications
- Manipulate text data using Cocoa's text handling capabilities
- Draw with Cocoa
- Add scripting functionality to your applications
- Localize your application for multiple language support
- Polish off your application by adding an icon for use in the Dock, provide Help, and package your program for distribution
Each chapter ends with a series of Examples, challenging you to test your newly-learned skills by tweaking the application you've just built, or to go back to an earlier example and add to it some new functionality. Solutions are provided in the Appendix, but you're encouraged to learn by trying. Extensive programming experience is not required to complete the examples in the book, though experience with the C programming language will be helpful. If you are familiar with an object-oriented programming language such as Java or Smalltalk, you will rapidly come up to speed with the Objective-C language. Otherwise, basic object-oriented and language concepts are covered where needed.
Customer Reviews:
Great Start to Learn OS X Programming.......2005-07-02
This book is a great start to learn the best OS X programming technology. As a professional developer. The title says it "Learning Cocoa with Objective C". Avoid the book "Cocoa in a Nutshell" until you know Cocoa and Objective C and want a good refeerence.
I also plan to read: "Programming in Objective C" and "Cocoa Programming", but only after mastering the material in this book.
OK..........2005-02-25
While this book is very detailed and has a lot of information in it about Cocoa programming, it starts off too quickly. You might be discouraged by the assumptions the author makes about how much C (and programming in general) you know. If you are experienced in computer programming, then you will find this book to be a blast and will learn objective -C in no time at all. However, if you aren't too good with programming, start off with some online tutorials or other books, as you will get lost after reading the first two chapters or so.
A good book, but not the best book.......2004-05-10
A very popular book, and greatly improved in its second edition. Very example and tutorial oriented; somewhat out of date at this point, however. Helps the user learn Interface Builder, ProjectBuilder and Objective-C, too. Possibly a bit shallow to get the reader writing their own Cocoa programs from scratch, but a good introduction. Ultimately, probably not as recommended for a first purchase as Cocoa Programming by Scott Anguish or Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X by Aaron Hillegass.
Indispensible Guide for Moving from C to Object Orientation.......2004-02-23
Being an old Pascal and C programer from the earlier Mac OS (systems 6 and 7) I was finding 1) that Carbon documentation was a mess, and 2) that Cocoa's object orientation was incomprehensible. So, in deciding which environment to work in to upgrade my old scientific apps, I felt stuck between two impossible choices. I wanted the power of quartz and the familiarity of C in a format I could learn. This book provides the indispensible introduction to object orientation that is a prerequisite for Cocoa and ultimately Apple's latest and greatest stuff under the hood. From there, the developer documentation and Garfinkel's or Hillegrass' books can take you the rest of the way. But, this is the place to start if you're conversant in c but not objects.
Good try, but needs a bit more work.......2004-01-16
This book needed one more pass by the proofreaders. There are an annoyingly large number of typographical errors and other mistakes. What surprised me is that after introducing a number of features of Interface Builder, the author tends to manually write code (e.g., outlet declarations) then load the results into Interface Builder to make the various object connections. It would have been better in my view to simply use Interface Builder to perform these tasks (certainly less error prone).
Overall, the book is helpful in explaining a lot of issues, but I would have like the book to touch more in internationalization issues, such as how to handle input method editors and product localization. In real world programing, I'll need internationalization and input method editor handling before I need to worry about speech synthesis.

Book Description
Today's 18-to-40-year-olds make for a notoriously elusive group of consumers: they're savvy, sophisticated, and particular. They're all but immune to traditional advertising and have an instinctive sense of quality and fair pricing. Inundated with choices, they are drawn to brands that satisfy not just what they need, but what they crave. At the same time, these consumers are spending money like it's going out of style. Generation X has firmly refuted its slacker reputation and is nearing the height of its earning potential. Generation Y has more buying power than any previous generation of teens and twentysomethings. But how to win their attention and loyalty?
In Mind Your X's and Y's, Lisa Johnson proves that the buying habits of 18-to-40-year-olds can be anticipated. Johnson, coauthor of Don't Think Pink and a leading marketing consultant, pinpoints the new rules of engagement for this Connected Generation. Based on her own and others' groundbreaking research, she looks into the heart of the Gen X and Y psyche to identify its ten core cravings -- for adventure, for high-concept design, for new families and social networks, and for personal storytelling, to name a few.
This revolutionary book is packed with fascinating case studies of established and breakaway brands from every major industry, interviews with dozens of maverick thinkers and hundreds of consumers, and numerous revealing statistics. Johnson analyzes the scope of each craving to determine how it drives specific buying behaviors and offers relevant data that illustrate its impact. Mind Your X's and Y's equips anyone who wants to reach these consumers -- brand managers and their advertising, online, creative, packaging, events, and promotions teams; small-business owners and their marketing staff; advertising agencies and specialists -- with the know-how to transform market research into profitable strategies.
Members of Generations X and Y are the most coveted and hard-to-reach consumers in the marketplace. Mind Your X's and Y's is a master class in how to create compelling brands for this Connected Generation.

Amazing assessment of the X and Y generations.......2007-01-04
If you need to understand how young people make purchasing decisions, this book will put you way ahead of the competition. Even my young, technically savvy friends have learned new things from reading this book.
A book that hits you where you live and shows you step by step how to influence one of the biggest markets in the nation today.......2006-09-07
I loved this book, it is one of the best that I've read this year.
This is an important book because it gives you a clear, step by step roadmap for influencing and persuading one of the most fickle (and over marketed) consumer groups of our era, those consumers between 18 - 40.
The author goes into exacting detail about how this market consumes information and how you can create messages that resonate with them and stick. She also tells you what doesn't work (I cringed several times as I recognized mistakes that I made).
If you are in this age range you'll find this book one of the most refreshing you've ever read because it will describe you and how you consume information (I know it did for me) and it will help you make the transition between the kind of marketer you are today and one that can be even more effective.
This book is a guidebook, a roadmap and a manifesto. Grab this book today, even if your market it older, one of the things that the author didn't cover is how much more like 18 - 40 year olds older generations are becoming in their consumption of information and their resistance to advertising. Most of the information in this book applies to anyone who is active in today's world regardless of their age.
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars.

Book Description
Livy's tenth book, an exciting climax to his first decade, narrates two political advances of 300 BC, the Lex Valeria de provocatione and the opening up of major priesthoods to plebeians; it also tells of the Spartan Cleonymus' landfall at the site that long afterwards would be Venice. Its main topic, however, is Roman warfare, above all the outbreak of the Third Samnite War and the decisive battle of Sentium in 295 BC. This new commentary, which completes Professor Oakley's exposition of Books VI-X, deals comprehensively with all aspects of Livy's work, including the literary structure of his narrative, the historical and topographical problems of the Samnite Wars, the poetical and archaic language sometimes affected by Livy, and the numerous textual problems posed by the extant manuscripts. An extensive section of addenda and corrigenda contains revisions to the preceding volumes.

Excellent, easy to understand. You won't find better..........2007-03-09
For those who are new to Unix, never fear, you won't find a better way to start. This book is very clearly written, easy to understand, and covers more than enough of the shell environment to give the user plenty to work with. Buy it! Get the most out of your Mac.
Fantastic.......2007-01-03
I loved the first edition of this book, but was thrilled when the updated version was released. (The original book was written before Mac OS X adopted the bash shell by default, so many of the examples were out of whack with later releases of the OS).
I use this as my primary Unix reference at work - where we do not use Macs! It is a comprehensive and easy reference.
I recommend this and O'Reilly's Learning Perl as the two best books (especially if you have a Mac at home) to build your professional Unix chops quickly.
Hits the Sweet Spot.......2005-12-20
I have a working understanding of UNIX and am a Mac user. In my experience, this book is ideally targeted for someone like me that wants to improve UNIX skills and prefers to do so on a Mac. Other texts I've consulted seem to jump too fast between really elementary subjects to needs of a system admin. The depth here is still rich, but the reader has time to digest the information before getting to more complex constructs.

Customer Reviews:
Nice addition to my OSX UNIX library.......2005-09-25
OS X UNIX is amazingly friendly and accessible. Some people who had never used it before type commands and work with the operating system directly as a "cool guys" in movies! This book is very helpful and well written and it is serves as a very nice reference on OS X server. I paired this book with that "UNIX Essentials" DVD I found here on Amazon and it is complete UNIX course recorded and this book and a video they contribute one another greatly. You improve the reading and by reading you improve what you have seen. OS X server is most advanced and easy to manage UNIX server ever. It is a culmination of all efforts for all UNIX system managing software I ever encountered.
The book is very particular about the subjects that related to OS X and because there are some differences between OS X and other UNIXes it is nice to have a book that deals with it.
Panther Server Skillset.......2005-08-22
The manual has covered the basic setup of the entire suite of services, plus a slew of other utilities that help manage server settings. The author has done good work in organizing the book for services. I use it as reference for many server jobs. I am thankful for the concise written reference.
A welcome addition to an OS X Server library.......2005-04-19
I've been waiting for a solid introduction to OS X Server book for some time and have long thought that the lack of such a book was a significant gap in many publishers' stables. Happily, this book filled that gap for me.
As is the style of the other Visual QuickPro Guides, the book is filled with very clear, step-by-step instructions. These lead you through the configuration of each service and are accompanied by a huge number of screen shots so that you can see where you are and easily match up what's happening on your screen. It could be argued, however, that this approach is too repetitive at times, with all the detailed steps and screenshots of getting to a certain point before moving into the meat of how to do a new topic. I suppose this is valuable if you use Server infrequently and pick up the book as a reference text the odd time that you need to make a change, but if you read multiple sections as an intro to what's possible then you'll probably want to skip the first few steps of each new section you get to.
As far as content goes, the book covers essentially every topic you can think of, and also provides many useful tips sprinkled throughout to help you configure and manage your server. The downside of this breadth of coverage is that many topics seem to provide just enough information to be dangerous, but not enough to really "teach" you about what everything means. I was hoping that the book would provide more explanation as to what each of the different options means and does, and provide more recommendations as to why I might choose one option over another. In the DNS chapter, for example, it mentions "A records" and "PTR records," but doesn't explain what these are or how to choose which records you need (yes, there is a valid counterpoint to this, see the next paragraph). Another example is the choice of logging options - it would be helpful to more clearly indicate this process and why I might want to choose one level of logging versus another. A brief primer on how to read the logs would also be valuable.
In the book's defense on the breadth issue, the title is "QuickPro Guide," suggesting that it'll be enough to get you going, while spending relatively little time on detailed explanation. The book does fulfill this objective, but I just think that
additional explanation would make the book even more valuable and reduce the need to reference other networking and server books to get a basic background. In those cases where there is a call for more detail than "should" be provided in this particular book, quite possibly such as my DNS example above, the book should provide a weblink or two or recommended reading suggestions for more information. Perhaps it's a matter of focus and the book should choose to either be oriented to beginners and provide them with enough information to enlighten them or else tell them where to find foundation references first, a set of prerequisites say, and then concentrate on a more experienced audience.
A couple of final thoughts includes a caveat that the structure seems a bit disorganized, with some key topics being put off. For example, security is pushed to the end of the book, as many other books do as well, although at least parts of the chapter would be useful closer to the front, such as the creation of private keys, which is relevant to securing Web services, sending and receiving email, etc. Another suggestion for a future edition would be the inclusion of a flowchart of the key tasks that you need to do when setting up a new server from scratch. The book gives good advice in this regard, but it's all text-based. A graphic to lead off the Intro or first chapter as a jumping off point would be great.
Overall, I did find the book very helpful, but more as a reference tool than a learning guide. If that's what you're after then look no further, but otherwise be prepared to do some additional reading - of course, it's unrealistic to expect one book to do it all anyway. I am looking forward to O'Reilly's soon-to-be-released Essential Mac OS X Server Administration book.
NB. I accessed the book via safari.oreilly.com - an excellent service I might add (if you're not the type of person who needs to feel the paper).
Content good, but too late and disorganized........2005-02-25
The book is not bad, but it only handles "simple" stuff, if I dare call any computer administration simple.
People entering server administration should, first off, be those that are already considered power users or geeks by the majority of their coworkers. Such a person will already know the truly simple stuff, have acquired bits and pieces of more advanced knowledge, but need considerable direction on the concepts and issues of server administration. On this latter point the book is, unfortunately, far too sketchy, and some things are, I feel, a bit too sketchy for this sort of audience.
I should point out, too, that the famed Macintosh ease of use is here somewhat of a hindrance. I.e., the Xserve and Mac OS X Server setup is deceptively easy, to the point that bad setups are easy to do. Was Unix administration always intentionally hard, in order to "idiot-proof" it? One has to wonder... Given this problem, the book screams out for an introductory chapter on what issues there are in setting up a server, what possible solutions are, what the implications pro and con of each of these choices are, what setups are prerequisites for others, and so forth. The wet-behind-the-ears administrator could then create a flowchart of needed tasks, which this proposed introductory chapter could then reference for details.
Furthermore, the book's organization leaves much to be desired. I should think that security issues should be set up first, not relegated to a late chapter as in this book. DNS is handled in Chapter 3 I believe, yet there are items with dependencies on DNS that are described in earlier chapters. It would make sense to describe setting up user templates before users are actually set up.
For my part, I've already read the book twice and am now proceeding with my 3rd read-through, taking notes as I'm going as to what I need to do and in what order. I'm also taking notes on the files that will be modified as I'm doing this, so that I can take care to back up their original versions. This kind of information is thankfully in the book but unfortunately not stated up front in each section. This (i.e. "read the book through before starting any work") should appear as an instruction in the first chapter.
As to detail, one example relevant to our own situation (and likely many others') should suffice. Having already set up a web site, we wanted to set up the Xserve so that web requests go to the off-site web service while email is sent to the Xserve. The basics can be accomplished with Apple's GUI tools, but the details have to be done by hand in the text-based configuration files. Granted, books can be bought on DNS and BIND; but I don't really want or need a library of 10-12 books on all aspects of Unix administration.
One Great Book!.......2005-02-22
After reading through this book, I had no trouble at all setting up a small office server with mail & web services. Schoun Regan has written a book that is easy to read and easy to follow. I hope that an update to this book is written right after Tiger is released.
