4 out of 5 stars Almost replaces the Campus Visits!.......2005-01-11

Business Week provides a lot of insider information that you would normally find out at Information Sessions or Campus Visits. It doesn't completely replace the Campus Visit, but it definitely supplements it very well with its in-depth info on the Top-30 Schools.

Others to look at:
1. ABC of Getting the MBA Admissions Edge: My personal favorite. It covers Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg, MIT, Chicago, Columbia, Berkeley, NYU, and INSEAD, but the strategies can be generalized to all schools.
2. Your MBA Game Plan: Great overall resource! Has information about Top-30 Schools and general information about App Strategy, GMAT, Essays, and Letter of Recs.
3. How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs: Very good Resource. The most comprehensive list of old essays.
4. Business Week Best Business Schools: In-Depth info on Top-30 Schools. Good reference to get the 411 on each school.
5. WSJ Top Business School: Good reference to what recruiters think of each school.
6. USNew's America's Best Graduate Schools: In my opinion the most comprehensive/accurate rankings (BW, WSJ, FT, Forbes) on the market.

5 out of 5 stars The best b-school guide out there.......2003-11-23

Nothing even comes close, people. First of all, the descriptions in this guide are more extensive and accurate than those found in other guides (with, perhaps, a few "niche" exceptions, such as guides focusing on a very small number of schools, i.e. top 10). Arguably, Business Week is "the guide" to use for accurate rankings. Their methodology relies upon ratings of the "consumers" of b-schools, students and recruiters. While no ranking methodology is perfect, I feel most comfortable with the one that includes opinon of the consumers of the particular "product."

Here's what you'll find between the covers:

The book starts with a fairly extensive section on why you would want an MBA and how to get into the best schools. If you don't know anything about the process of applying to b-school, this is a good start, but it is just that--a start. Rankings and the description of BW methodology (including questions asked and a list of schools with top and bottom scores on each question) complete the introductory section.

Most of the book, however, is focused on descriptions of programs that made top 30, the runners-up, and non-us schools. These descriptions include basic quantitative measures like fees, student body composition, and admissions numbers. I found the statistics on teaching methods employed by different schools particularly useful (and this is something important that most other guides/rankings pay very little attention to).

The actual descriptions are very extensive. They cover virtually all aspects of a program, including academics, clubs/activities, social life, placement, and alumni networks. The well written text is supplemented by quotes from faculty and students, which is a nice touch. At the end of each school's section, you'll find detailed information on placement, top recruiters, outstanding faculty, student testimonials, as well as some useful tips straight from the admissions office.

If you're looking to get a b-school guide that includes rankings, exhaustive descriptions, and some good advice, look no further. There might be other books out there that will provide more detailed program descriptions for a smaller number of programs, or books that will give more substantial advice about the application process, but there is no one book that does as many things as well as this one. Buy it!

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2003-02-25

I got turned on to Jungle Media Group through my sister's subscription to JD Jungle magazine. I looked through the MBA Jungle website, and was really excited when I got this book. This book contains little to no new content not offered in the magazine or on the website. Some of the sections are taken directly from the website (probably vice versa actually). It's not to say that the information itself is not useful (although it is presented a little simplistically), but it feels very stale. So if you are a regular reader of MBA jungle or MBAJungle.com save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful to MBA hopefuls.......2003-02-18

I found this text to be quite helpful, specifically, toward deciding if B-school is right for me, whether full-time/part-time is the way to go, and whether I should set my sights on a top-tier program or feel satisfied with a middle-tier school. Additionally, there's a ton of info that would be helpful for those in the first few months of the MBA program.

If you're still deciding whether or not an MBA is right for you, this book will be a great resourse in helping you decide.

3 out of 5 stars Good book if your school fits the mold.......2002-06-16

I found this book interesting, but it seemed to me that it would be most useful to a Harvard/Stanford/etc MBA. I go to a business school that is not a top school, and I found that much of what was said just didn't apply to me. In fact, after reading this book you might be scared away from b-school, even though many schools do not employ the pressure cooker tactics of some of the more prestigious ones. I would recommend reading the book, but remember that little advice can hold true for every program.

5 out of 5 stars just the job - a great read!.......2001-11-21

Several friends recommended this to me in recent months, so I picked up a copy. The authors laid out a concise, smart and sensible framework for approaching the whole process of B school admissions. After reading this I felt more confident about maximizing my success in the application process for B school and telling my story in the most effective way. Thanks!

1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2001-10-26

This book did not meet my admittedly high expectations. The author overpromised and underdelivered, failing to cover any subject attemptd in depth. After reading a couple of these guides I realized that most of what you need to know to succeed in business school is just common sense. Keep doing whatever you did to be successful before you got to business school and don't listen to so-called pundits, who all give conflicting information anyway.

A very thorough guide to applying to business school. It provides excellent information about the internal workings of the admissions process as well as thought-provoking guidance to help you through the essay writing process. It also provides good insight on the types of things to consider when choosing the business schools you want to apply to.

5 out of 5 stars complete guide to the true north.......1999-11-09

The best part, I think, is the essay chapters. It tells you what do the admission officers really want to know in each type of essay questions. For example, the ethic question is different than legal issues. Anything illegal is clearly not a good topic to write in ethic essays.

Book Description

Going to College tells the powerful story of how high school students make choices about postsecondary education. Drawing on their unprecedented nine-year study of high school students, the authors explore how students and their parents negotiate these important decisions. Family background, finances, education, information -- all influence students' plans after high school and the career paths they pursue, as do the more subtle messages delivered by parents and counselors which shape adolescents' self-expectations. For high school guidance counselors, college admissions counselors, parents and teachers, and public policy makers, this book is a valuable resource that explains the decision-making process and helps adults to help students make appropriate choices.

The authors identify predisposition, search, and choice as the three stages in the student decision-making process. Predisposition refers to the plans students develop for education or work after they graduate from high school. The search stage involves students discovering and evaluating a variety of colleges and universities. In the choice stage, students choose a school to attend from among a list of institutions that are being seriously considered. Understanding exactly how students move through the predisposition, search, and choice stages of the college decision-making process can help students and parents prepare themselves for this process and consider a wider array of options. For education professionals, understanding this process can lead to new initiatives to guide students and families effectively -- by providing better incentives for college savings, for example, or devising more effective early information programs about postsecondary education.

Going to Collegeis the first book to seriously study over an extended period the decisions that have a pervasive and lasting impact on individual careers, livelihoods, and lifestyles. The authors conclude with important recommendations for improving academic support, exploring various financial options, providing early encouragement -- in other words, for recognizing the factors that influence students' decisions, and knowing when to pay attention to them.

3 out of 5 stars A book of unusual scope but it falls a bit short.......2002-09-09

This book reports on studies the authors conducted in Indiana between 1986 and 1994. It examines what may make a high schooler predisposed to attend college, how students search for college opportunities, and what choices they ultimately make upon graduation from high school. Finally, it reviews what the study's participants actually did do in the four years following high school.

In addition to outlining findings from these surveys, Going to College also reports in greater depth on interviews with eight students. While relatively interesting, the interviews are not the most beneficial part of the book. Even the surveys, the book acknowledges, may be somewhat limited in their value. For instance, some results may not be useful to people in other parts of the country. The study is set in Indiana, where the average parental income and educational levels are in the bottom half of the fifty states.

Nonetheless, Going to College contains a number of interesting conclusions and statements. For example, the study discovered that seven of ten sophomores who said they planned to attend a college of some sort did actually matriculate in college after high school. However, only 35% of the students surveyed ended up attending one of the colleges they were considering in the tenth grade year.

Going to College also tries to determine what characteristics may "predict" whether or not a high schooler will end up attending college. The role of parents seems to be a key predictor. The authors found that toward the beginning of the college selection process--during the early high school years--the encouragement of parents is most likely to determine whether or not a student has college aspirations. Sixty-four percent of students who received strong encouragement from their parents attended a four-year college (p. 102). The parents' level of educational attainment also makes a difference. As that level increases, children are more likely to go to college. Seventy-five percent of students whose parents had a college degree actually enrolled in college (p. 104).

The second strongest indicator of college aspirations is the students' high school grade point average. Ninety-one percent of A students plan to attend a four-year college and 65% of B students do, but only 28% of C students expect to go to college (p. 106).

Going to College represents the type of research that most college and university enrollment managers would love to conduct: A longitudinal study that traces students' and parents' attitudes, influences and goals through the high school years and beyond. Unfortunately, the results of this particular study are somewhat limited.

4 out of 5 stars Great contributed research : Required for all parents.......2001-04-25

I'm not in an education area, I'm an engineer though. I bought this book to see research in educational or social science on impat of high school students choosing their higher education. After reading "preface", I was stunned for the research had been conducted for "9" years! This book is very important for any parents. The college may be for your children at 17-18, but this book will tell you how important you are to support them; not only when they go to College but much before (e.g., sixth grade). I'm glad I read this book before I have my own child. What more surprising me is the book organization. This book was well written and organized. The structure is easy to follow. For each case study, the conclusion was drawn. Their research factors/questions were well defined. I wasn't surprised to see the outcome of their research. What annoy me is the keeping-talking of statistics tool. While it's important, the writing and research are more important. It's quite disappointed me.

4 out of 5 stars Short read but not a true primer on college choice.......2000-08-18

Don Hossler is probably the most prolific writer on admissions and enrollment management in the last two decades, and, in my opinion, the best. This book, written with two co-authors, though, disappoints a little bit.

If you're looking for a basic overview on how students select colleges, try Hossler's other work or that of others on the structure of college choice. Avoid the mass-market "choosing a college" books that are targeted to over-anxious students and parents.

The core of the book describes a longitudinal study the authors did on Indiana high school students. While the stats and ancedotes do a fine job helping the reader to understand the process *these students* were going through, it's difficult to read and not think "how would this apply to other students? Does it at all?"

There is a worthy summary of the current theory and models of student college choice in the closing chapters. My advice, if you read this book, is to start with the generalized information in the back and then read the rest of the book from page one.

    Book Description

School choice is a topic that sparks controversy on both the national and local levels. Some parents (mainly the affluent) have always had school choice, either through private school, or by buying a house in a preferred public school district. In recent decades, new forms of school choice have fundamentally altered the educational landscape. In many cases these new mechanisms—busing efforts, magnet schools, charter schools, open enrollment, and tuition vouchers—have provided less affluent families with their first taste of school choice.

Getting Choice Right assesses the basic mechanics of school choice, with a focus on the question of how, if the nation decides to expand choice, it can be implemented in a way to benefit the most students while minimizing any social costs. The first section of this book studies lessons for the design of school choice emanating from economic theory and practical experience. Essays describe what policies are needed to promote both a vigorous demand for and an adequate supply of educational choices. Addressing the valid concerns that opponents have raised, the second part examines the impact on students who are left behind in failing schools, the impact of choice on racial integration, the politics of school choice, and the implications for civic engagement of tomorrow's adult population.

By itself, school choice is not inherently good or bad, and the ability of school choice to improve both efficiency and equity in the nation's schools hinges on a number of key policy decisions. Factors such as the flow of information to parents, the inducement that the system provides for families to choose the ideal schools for their children, the regulations and funding that influence the supply of choice schools, and the incentives for schools to encourage racial and socioeconomic integration all play important roles. In Getting Choice Right, distinguished contributors analyze the potential benefits, the potential risks, and the policy options associated with a move toward a universal system of school choice.

Deftly co-edited by Julian R. Exploring the "no child left behind" act and everything it is meant to accomplish, Getting Choice Right enlightens the reader on how choice works to reflect community interest in the potential benefits of new school options and how to obtain them while avoiding choice's potential harm. Getting Choice Right is very strongly recommended to all non-specialist general readers with an interest in educational reforms, as well as K-12 faculty members and education policy makers.

          Book Description

The electricity market has experienced enormous setbacks in delivering on the promise of deregulation. In theory, deregulating the electricity market would increase the efficiency of the industry by producing electricity at lower costs and passing those cost savings on to customers. As Electricity Deregulation shows, successful deregulation is possible, although it is by no means a hands-off process—in fact, it requires a substantial amount of design and regulatory oversight.

This collection brings together leading experts from academia, government, and big business to discuss the lessons learned from experiences such as California's market meltdown as well as the ill-conceived policy choices that contributed to those failures. More importantly, the essays that comprise Electricity Deregulation offer a number of innovative prescriptions for the successful design of deregulated electricity markets. Written with economists and professionals associated with each of the network industries in mind, this comprehensive volume provides a timely and astute deliberation on the many risks and rewards of electricity deregulation.
