The craze for "getting away from it all" in buildings of log, stone, and unpainted lumber has been a part of American life since the 1800s. From the Gilded Age retreats of the Catskills and Adirondacks to the rugged Wild West lodges of Yellowstone and Yosemite, Cabin Fever celebrates the architectural elements that make cabin style unique: gleaming hand-peeled and polished logs, cowhide sofas, and river-rock fireplaces. Some are large, old, and built as public lodgings, like Putnam Camp, the Adirondack summer retreat founded by philosopher William James, which still has the cheerful austerity it had when Freud and Jung mingled there with Harvard academicians. Others, like the grand hunting lodge nestled on the edge of a marsh, are more recent monuments to quirky private visions of the perfect rustic retreat. Rooms in both are accessorized with animal heads, native American blankets and art, snowshoes, antler chandeliers, and willow twig furniture. The book's appendix includes catalog sources for everything from small wooden summerhouses to buffalo-plaid blankets, and a list of hotels in the grand old style (like Yosemite's Ahwahnee and the Grand Canyon's El Tovar). Even if you can't have a piece of the wilderness to call your own (and the burl furniture to match), you can still enjoy the rustic yet substantial comforts of Cabin Fever.

Book Description

A log cabin in the woods is one of America's most cherished icons -- a dream shared around the world. As the stress level of city life rises, more and more of us are imagining our own cottages far away from traffic lights and urban distractions. Cabins in the wilderness have never gone out of style, because the rustic life is a simple, rewarding one rooted in the traditions of the great outdoors.

Featuring rustic interiors as well as North Woods architecture, Cabin Fever visits more than two dozen charming retreats old and new, large and small, in the mountains and along the water, from the wilds of New York out to the wild, wild West. Author Rachel Carley explains where our love for the rustic comes from and shows the amazingly varied guises in which it appears today.

After serving as settlers' cabins, log homes enjoyed a phenomenal popularity in the late nineteenth century. Wealthy families such as the Vanderbilts, Guggenheims, and Carnegies summered in areas as remote as they could find, building what were euphemistically called camps. Those less affluent, following the era's prescription for fresh air and simplicity, traveled to even more rustic hotels and vacation cabins to get their share of the refreshing woods. Cabin Fever presents some of the best of these old lodges and private cabins, along with striking new homes that give a contemporary twist to the ideal of the rustic life.

To help fill a cabin, a whole camp, or even an apartment with the latest in rustic style, the book's catalogue shows where to find home furnishings from twig bedsteads to Hudson Bay blankets to Adirondack chairs. Brimming with exceptionally creative ideas for achieving this truly American look, this enchanting guide to living with the rustic style will cure every variety of cabin fever.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding photographs.......2004-06-03

I have been searching for books for months now that would give me real life examples of cabin type homes to use in designing my country home. While there are a lot of books out there on small cabins, I was looking for a book that showed examples that I could incorporate into a larger home. This book is exactly what I was looking for! The photographs are beautiful and truly capture some of the key elements that make these homes special. The author has managed to find some of the best examples out there of truly beautiful, well designed log/natural material homes.

In addition to the photographs, the narative is also quite entertaining. It helps the reader understand some of the thinking that went into the creation of these great spaces.

If you are looking for a very enjoyable book with wonderful pictures of a vast collection of cabins (both small and large), then this is the book you have been looking for! I know it was for me; I already have dozens of ideas that I plan on incorporating into my, not so small, cabin. Enjoy!

Excellent book with great pirctures of rustic rooms and homes. Great decorating ideas!

4 out of 5 stars See the log cabin of your dreams...........2003-06-05

A great coffee table book for your house or mountain cabin! Most of these "vacation homes" are nicer than our regular houses. Great to curl up with this book in front of the fire.

5 out of 5 stars A lovely book for dreaming on.......2003-03-17

I have salivated over this book for several years and finally bought it. It has great photos of log homes all over America, from the northeast to the southwest. Some are quite famous examples of camps from the early 1900s, say, in the Adirondacks or New England. Others are quite new. I not only liked the way they were presented and photographed, all in color, but also enjoyed the text describing when each cabin was built, who built it and so on. It was also very interesting to see the way each cabin was decorated, some with very beautiful artifacts, others quite utilitarian, but each with its own charm. It is delightful to browse through the text and photos every now and then just for fun and inspiration. I plan to display it next to a little model of a log cabin I have. If you love log cabins you will enjoy this book and find it very interesting. A great book for the family cabin or lodge, or for those who have always wished for a log cabin like me!

1 out of 5 stars Dated and dark.......2002-09-11

This is a book of dark, dated little homes that are depressing. One can almost imagine the bugs and other vermin running around the baseboards. Yecch. Creepy. I'm looking for a getaway or cabin book that shows airy and light and sunny homes. Sorry I got this book.

Product Description

Cabin Fever by Diana Hunter As soon as her date took the turn up the mountain, Isabel knew she was in trouble. Did all men take one look at her well-endowed breasts and think sex? The last thing she was about to do was make out in a tiny car on some godforsaken mountain with a date she never wanted to see again. Daniel Fox wanted to forget a case gone bad and a relationship gone sour. When a client he had defended killed his wife, Daniel takes a leave of absence and, alone, heads for a mountain retreat to deal with the guilt. The last thing he wants is company. A winter storm forces Isabel and Daniel together and they must share a tiny cabin with one bed. In that bed they discover a dark passion that rules them both. Neither of them gets what they had planned...but both get something better.

5 out of 5 stars Not To Be Missed!.......2007-03-13

When I first saw Cabin Fever on Amazon, even before it was released, I knew I had to have it. The plot line of being trapped in confined quarters with a hot guy due to adverse circumstances has long been a favorite fantasy of mine.

The first thing I noticed about the book when I received it was the thickness. It is noticeably longer than other books of this genre. I liked that aspect, and it gave Ms. Hunter plenty of time to develop the relationship at a believable pace. Indeed, the first part of the book is filled with delicious sexual tension between Isabel and Daniel due to their proximity, and the reader is left with great anticipation as to when they are finally going to break down and act on the feelings they've been having. A shorter book wouldn't have been able to provide that kind of build up or realistic pace.

When Daniel and Isabel finally got together, however, it was a bit of a let down for me. I just didn't feel that passion, that heat between the two as I thought there should have been. There seemed to be too much thinking, too much self-control and propriety. I noticed the same thing with Ms. Hunter's other book "Secret Submission," so I've come to believe it's just a personal difference in taste between Ms. Hunter and me. While her books are extremely well-written, they just don't ooze that passion and out-of-control neediness I like to see between the characters.

Another aspect I wasn't particularly fond of was the lack of communication between Daniel and Isabel towards the end of the book, which lead to their separation. I've noticed that's a common trend among such books: misunderstanding due to complete lack of communication, separation of the lovers, and the eventual reunion. I also could have done without the whole supernatural sub-plot. A book about sex and love is completely worthy on its own and doesn't require any "deeper" plot to elevate its status, in my opinion.

Despite all that, however, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it will definitely be one I'll keep for my personal library! I highly recommend it to all!

5 out of 5 stars This is the perfect book to read on those cold winter nights when you're stuck inside.......2007-01-27

Isabel is in her thirties and still unmarried, much to her mother's displeasure. She had accepted a date with a human octopus and when he refused to stop groping, Isabel got out of the car to walk home. Now, she's lost in the woods ten miles from the city, in the dark, and it's raining - so much for being an independent, self-sufficient woman.

Daniel is taking a break from civilization, and staying in a tiny cabin with no amenities. In the civilized world, Daniel was an attorney. He handed in his resignation when a case he was handling went very wrong and resulted in the death of a woman. Racked with guilt, Daniel makes plans to live in the cabin alone. Those plans are demolished when Isabel literally faints at his feet.

Cold, wet, alone, and hopelessly lost, Isabel struggles to find her way off the mountain where her date had left her. When she hears a growl, her imagination goes into overdrive and she begins racing through the trees, the branches rip at her clothes and inflict injuries to the skin beneath. In her panic, Isabel runs into a huge man who grabs her wrist. She escapes him, only to be tackled by a wolf. Seconds later, the shock of the evening's events proves to be too much and Isabel faints. Daniel takes the young woman into his cabin and cares for her wounds, even stitching up a nasty cut on her arm. When Isabel wakes up from her faint days later, she's naked and tied to the bed. Isabel's also disturbed by the unexplainably realistic dreams she's having while sleeping. Daniel releases her, explaining that he'd been forced to bind her while she was feverish so that she wouldn't reopen her stitched arm. As Isabel gradually improves, her stubborn, independent nature become more obvious to Nathan, turning him on almost as much as it frustrates him. Daniel knows that once it begins to snow, they'll be snowed in, he plans to get her back to the city and go back to his solitary life, but Mother Nature has other plans. They end up snowed in. It will be months before they can get out again. With only each other for company and a single bed, life's bound to get interesting.

From the very beginning CABIN FEVER is addictive, I read the entire story in one sitting. Isabel's stubbornness and determination endear her to the reader. Daniel's gentleness and take charge attitude, especially in a man his size is a huge turn on. Add to that, the fact that he's an extremely dominant male and you have a man worth fantasizing about long after you finish reading. The plot is fast paced, action packed, filled with sexual anticipation, and contains a hint of paranormal. The mystery behind the dreams is fascinating and an interesting distraction from the intensity of the characters. Diana Hunter depicts the emotions behind each of the character's actions beautifully so that you feel an attachment for them. This is the perfect book to read on those cold winter nights when you're stuck inside, it gives a whole new meaning to the term "CABIN FEVER."

Following their creed of minimal finishing, Deb and Lynda Gemmell and fellow Cabin Fever designers bring you more than 30 delightful fashions for children. Most of the designs are knit in one piece or constructed from one of three different directions. Choose a cozy pullover knit in the round from the bottom up or from the top down. Or choose a cardigan or vest made in one piece, working back and forth on a circular needle. These can also be knitted from the top down with no seams to sew. For something different, work a sweater from each of the cuffs and then join in the middle. There also is a poncho, beaded bag, tunic and hat, hoodie vest, and bare midriff slipover. Your special little ones will love wearing these amazing creations, which are great for experienced as well as beginning knitters

There are so many designs in here and they are done for the sewing allergic folks like me. If you love to make kids'sweaters but hate sewing them up, this is the book you need. Even if you love the sewing you will find designs in here you want to make. There are different sorts of designs like the little Chanel jacket and the sweater like a jeans jacket. This book is well worth its price.

Book Description

Rich with humor and natural history, this memoir describes 25 summers of back-to-the-earth adventure as author William L. Sullivan and his wife Janell build a log cabin by hand along a roadless river deep in the wilds of Oregon's Coast Range. Along the way they confront beaver in the refrigerator, raise a family, and puzzle out a murder mystery that had haunted their homestead site. Cabin Fever takes readers to a warm world of kerosene lamplight, wood stoves, and ghost stories that may be true.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!.......2006-09-12

Bill Sullivan is an excellent writer and he is willing to share his family life in the cabin. This book will keep you reading. To find out what he has done with the cabin and who coming to visits in the woods. I've read all of his other books and they are outstanding.
I highly recommended his "cabin fever" book if you are an adventure and enjoy the outdoor life.

5 out of 5 stars Well done.......2006-07-24

There are 2 types of people in the world: those who love the idea of living in a log cabin and those who don't. If you belong to the prior group, you'll love this book.

This book is loosely comparable to "One Man's Wilderness", a story about a man who builds a cabin in the wilds of Alaska and lives in solitude. I found this book to be much more interesting. I guess that's the difference between non-fiction and creative non-fiction?

At any rate, if you read this review Mr. Sullivan...kudos!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful story.......2006-01-13

This is a wonderful book. It's well-written and keeps your attention throughout. You get to know the people, and to care what happens to them.

The focus is less on the hands-on pioneering, although that aspect is fascinating and enlightening, and more on the pioneering spirit. It's nice to know that the spirit is still alive.

5 out of 5 stars Cabin Fever.......2004-04-24

As someone who has grown up romanticizing the log cabin life, I absolutely loved this modern cabin story. It's typical Bill Sullivan - funny, historically informative, easy to read, and entertaining. Anyone who is a fan of Bill's will enjoy learning more about his family. Anyone who is new to Bill's work will want to read more after reading this book.

The instructions are very well laid out and easy to understand. I am a relatively new quilter, and am making the cover quilt right now. For the cover quilt, Evelyn takes what appears to be a rather complicated pattern, and breaks it down into enjoyable portions. She is an excellent teacher, if you ever have the opportunity...take one of her classes, but until then...this book is a MUST have!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent quilting resource!.......2002-01-31

Evelyn's book is wonderfully designed. You'll enjoy her unique approach to innovating the traditional log cabin block. Her smooth teaching style shows through the pages of her first book. I have already made one of the quilts from the book and loved the results. Watch for more from this talented teacher and author!

I can relate to the charater Emily. She puts her life and wants on hold so she can provide for her sister going to school. Like her I would do anything and I mean anything for my famiy. Brad is like a typical man except for the fact that he is serious and percatious in life. She thinks of him as some kind of player and it doesn't help that she is attracted to him. And the fact that they are both stuck in a cabin far far away from civilization doesn't help. Only through this whole ordeal is Brad actually able to see what Emily is really all about. He actually is able to see her for her not for her being his secretay. And from there their attration for one another grows.
This is a good read. I borrowed this book from a friend and I am so going to go and get myself this book.

5 out of 5 stars terrific private investigative romance .......2005-05-04

Wealthy Brad Vaughn informs his father, owner of Vaughn Associates, a Chicago based PI firm, that he did not impregnate Suzette Brouchard and rejects her efforts to blackmail him. Instead, he insists he will undergo DNA testing and accept the bad PR until he proves otherwise.

Brad asks his secretary Emily Stanton if she will accompany him on a deed search in Thunder Canyon, Montana. She is hesitant believing he sired Suzette's child, but reluctantly agrees.

In Montana, gold rush fever has led to no rooms available except a cabin loaned to him by his client Caleb Douglas; this forces Brad and Emily to share a small area. Caleb wants Brad to determine who owns the Queen of Hearts Gold Mine that he thought belonged to his family, but he could not find the deed. As he follows clues laid out in the nineteenth century, Brad and Emily begin to fall in love, but he distrusts females so cannot commit his heart to his beloved.

CABIN FEVER is a terrific private investigative romance starring two likable fully developed protagonists who belong together. However the male obsessively distrusts females starting from when his dad caught his mom cheating while the woman feels it is better to avoid love than to be hurt. The deed inquiries are cleverly intertwined into the fine story line not just by the lead couple and their client, but also by interested eccentric locals and gold fevered tourists. A second investigation involving a missing child adds mystery elements to a fine contemporary as Karen Rose Smith raises the bar for other authors in the Montana Mavericks: Gold continuous series.

This is a photo essay with beautiful pictures. I was interested in Cabin ideas and this doesn't have any unless you want to vacation in a Mongolian yurt or an African mud hovel. Most of these homes wouldn't suit the homeless. 3 stars for the pretty photos but hey...I want my money back!

Did you know Starck owns its own cabin on the Atlantic Ocean, near Bordeaux? Many artists build one. Marie-France Boyer loves cabins. She owns one in her garden. Every french owns a cabin. Either a real one, lost in the woods in their grand-parents village or a dreamt one, made of souvenirs from their childhood. In this book, you will climb up tree-houses, swim under fishermen "abris" on the ocean, admire "ateliers d'artiste". You will learn how to transform any ugly back-yard cabin into a private heaven. All houses in this book are inspiring. You will experience poetic feelings facing the most miserable buildings.

Nolie Harper is starting over. And the bustling burg of Bethlehem is as far as the single mother can get from the gossipy one-horse town of Whiskey Creek, Arkansas. All set to claim the twin cabins she just inherited, Nolie discovers she already has a tenant: a scruffy, powerfully built stranger who makes it clear he wants to be left alone. Chase Wilson may be living like a recluse, but he’s making her yearn for togetherness--and stirring up the kind of desires that can change a woman’s whole outlook on life.

Newly sprung from prison for a crime he didn’t commit, Chase is liking life alone in his rented cabin just fine. Until the redhead with the lush curves and her young daughter arrive and throw what’s left of his life into maddening chaos. With her tantalizing neighborly ways, Nolie is slowly scorching her way into his guarded heart. And her passionate kind of healing is rapidly transforming his private hideaway into a lovers’ retreat hot enough to ignite an entire town.

5 out of 5 stars Down to earth! Loved it!.......2004-06-29

I don't usually read contemporary romance, but a friend of mine recommended this novel. I read it and I loved it! The characters are "realistic" in my opinion. Especially Nolie, the main character. She is not your typical thin, sexy gal you often read in other books. She is overweight and plain and pretty much accepts it. One reviewer claimed that if Nolie was not happy with how she looked why couldn't she fix herself up instead of going barefoot or eating throughout the book. Nolie "knows" she is not the type that a gorgeous guy like, Chase, would be interested in. Nolie did "attempt" at going on a diet. But just couldn't do it. That in my opinion, is a reality. It isn't easy to lose weight. The reason she goes around "plain-looking" is because she believes she is no great beauty to begin with and has pretty much accepted it. It was only when she became attracted to Chase that she started feeling "inadequate". Who doesn't feel self conscious when they are attracted to someone? In today's (unfortunately sometimes shallow) society, if you're not a size 0 (or something like that) you are not generally considered "desirable" and just because some women do not wear makeup or dress fasionably doesn't mean that they don't care about their appearance either. I, myself, would rather have a man love me for who I am than what I look like. This book, Cabin Fever, proves that just because you don't look or act like a "supermodel" doesn't mean that you aren't attractive. The old saying, "Looks aren't everything, it's what's inside that counts" is very true. And that nobody's completely perfect is true as well. Chase's ex wife was thin, sexy, wore expensive clothes, but she was ugly inside. Chase found Nolie beautiful and she didn't have to put up a "facade" to win his affection. Who you are inside holds a lot more weight than what you look like on the surface. In addition, the conflict between Nolie and her in-laws and the conflict between Chase and his parents are very real, meaning it does and is happening in families. There is always some sort of solution. This is the first book I've read by Marilyn Pappano and it won't be my last. Most readers like to read books purely for the escape into fantasy, so I do not recommend this novel for escape-seeking readers. This is a very down to earth story. And yes, the overweight girl can get the gorgeous hunk! (For the record, I'm not overweight nor do I wear a size extra small either! LOL) This story is a great inspiration to all women who feel less than perfect! Just be yourself! Accept who you are! Be who you are! Men who can't accept you for who you REALLY are, are in fact, missing out! Their loss, ladies! Forget those shallow men!

    3 out of 5 stars I liked it, I really really did.......2004-04-04

This was my first book by Marilyn Pappano. Overall I'm happy I read it because I have been in a romance novel funk for a long time and the story kept my attention. Cabin Fever had the potential to be a disaster of a story but the author is obviously very gifted and told the story in a way that satisfied me. I did have some negative issues with the book. For example, Nolie kept getting on my nerves with her "fatness". I just wanted to tell her to shut up and step away from the donut box. And god, did she have to eat in half the book? That's real sexy. Couldn't she just TRY to make her self more appealing instead of walking around barefoot! She could have gotten hookworm or some crap out in the forrest. The horror! Of course she had image issues, she made herself out to be this plain jane when she could have made an attempt to beautify herself.

The other b.s. aspect of the story was how the grandparents drove up (flew up?) in like 24 hours (!) to the backwoods of Bethlehem. I think it took Nolie 3 days to get there from Whisper Creek but it took the feeble old grandparents 2 seconds to confront Nolie in person. Hogwash! I hate it when authors pull a fast one on the reader. That really annoyed me.

But overall, the story was charming and I am looking forward to reading more of Ms. Pappano's books.

2 out of 5 stars ~ This Book Did Not Do It For Me ~.......2003-11-29

This was my first book by Marilyn Pappano, I was disappointed, when I first got this I could not wait to read it, this book did not do it for me, Some parts of the book I did enjoy and some parts went down hill for me .

    Happy Reading Lisa

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, Entertaining and Wonderfully Romantic.......2003-08-25

This was my first Marilyn Pappano book and it definitely won't be my last. I loved the characters in this book especially Nolie and Chase.

Nolie's lost her wonderful and caring husband who dies in a farm accident. After three years she is ready to move on with her life. This means uprooting her five year old daughter Micahlyn, who has been brainwashed by her husbands parents into thinking she should stay with them, to Bethlehem. Nolie is a plus size woman and she feels less than able to attact a handsome man. But it is what is inside Nolie that makes Chase want to know her better--he sees something totally different than Nolie sees.

Chase Wilson worked hard to make something out of himself only to have everything taken away. He lost his job, his wife, his money, etc. He is down on his luck in a bad way. At first sight Michalyn thinks he's the boogyman and Nolie thinks he is a street person--he in much need of a bath and shave. Gradually Nolie and Chase become friends and lovers. Nolie is different from any woman Chase has known. His wife was superficial and he is looking for a genuine person and Nolie more than fits the bill. He just has to convince her that he is truly intersted.

The story involves many secondary characters who liven up the story. I loved Micahlyn--she was such an honest and open child who eventually fell for Chase too. It's a heartwarming story about how two people can heal from their hurts and find a truly wonderful love the second time around.

I am looking forward to Leanne and Cole's story "Small Wonders."

    5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2003-07-25

Nolie Harper begins a new journey of self-discovery away from the small, one-horse town of Whiskey Creek, Arkansas where she grew up and where everyone knows everybody else's business. Nolie lands in Bethlehem, New York, along with her five-year-old daughter, Micahlyn. Property left to her by her great-grandfather brought her to Bethlehem, which includes a feed store he ran before his death. This is the first time Nolie has ever been on her own, living first with her parents, then with her husband, and last with her in-laws who lovingly, and overbearingly, took in Nolie and Micahlyn after their son's untimely death. The young widow is looking forward to living alone, making her own decisions, and raising her little girl as she sees fit.

Chase Wilson, a loner recently released from jail for a crime he did not commit, is the tenant in one of the two cabins that Nolie inherited, an unforgettable tenant who takes her by surprise since the lease was signed by a woman. But this distant, surly hunk who makes her hormones hum is certainly no woman. Nolie's interest is peaked by Chase's stony demeanor, reclusive ways, and gorgeous good looks. However, she also has to deal with her daughter's dislike and fear of their new neighbor, aptly called "the bogeyman" by Micahlyn.

And then there's Gloria and Sophy, two wonderful women who just show up from time to time in Nolie's life to help out a little bit; two women who no one else in town seems to know anything about. And there is that banner saying "REOPENING SOON" that mysteriously appears in front of the feed store that Nolie is working so hard to get going again. Are Gloria and Sophy just figments of Nolie's imagination or could there be angels in the town of Bethlehem?

Sparks soon fly between Nolie and Chase. While Nolie frets that Chase could never be attracted to someone with extra lush curves such as herself, Chase can't get the image of the tall, red-haired, womanly Nolie out of his mind - or his heart. Nolie's neighborly ways and gentle manner are getting to the brooding ex-attorney more than he ever expects or wants.

CABIN FEVER literally throbs with heat, not only from the summertime temps, but also from the warmth of a relationship that simmers with caring, understanding, acceptance, desire, and ultimately, love. Bethlehem is a town many of us would like to call home, with trusting neighbors and a sense of community. And most of us wouldn't mind a visit from Gloria and Sophy either. Marilyn Pappano skillfully creates characters that make you want to know them and become a part of their life. And actually you can, in her next novel, SMALL WONDERS, coming in September 2003, the ninth book of the Bethlehem series.
