Highly recommended.......2005-03-28
A very comprehensive and informative book, even though the examples are for the US it can be used and applied to other countries and systems. Gives a good grounding for financial understanding of healthcare entities. Highly recommend it to anyone looking interested in financial managment of health care organizations
Right to the point!.......2004-03-28
I found it very consice, and at the same time understandable with lots of examples, and practical. It is very well customized for health care organizations. It's worth your time and your money!
Financial Management of Healthcare Organizations.......2003-05-16
This text proved an invaluable guide to the subject of hospital finances. This was a subject I was not particularly interested in, and the book surprised me. It is readable and clear. The logic flows smoothly. There are plenty of examples, illustrating assorted principles. After reading several books on the topic of hospital finances, this one stands out for its clarity.
Customer Reviews:
Everything you need to know.......2003-06-21
I am studying from this textbook in preparation for graduate school and to complete my business knowledge, through a local college. This is an outstanding textbook that teaches you everything you need to know about finance. The explanations are clear and the chapter reviews challenging. You'll also learn how to use a financial calculator and you learn the algebra (I'm using an HP 12C emulator I downloaded for the Pocket PC, and I recently purchased an HP 10BII). Chapter eight is the best overview of financial statements I have ever read. Additionally, the clear explanation of standard deviation early in the book has helped me solidify my quantitative abilities. The book is accompanied by a website where you can take practice exams. There are 22 chapters. For complete comprehension, each chapter requires about 15 hours of reading, tasks, and study.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Book.......2005-06-14
I read this book, along with "Casino Operations Management" by Kilby, Fox, and Lucas. Both books were EXTREMELY helpful. They both start by assuming you know nothing about the gaming industry. They then show you the history and the evolution of the industry and then take you under the covers to show you the hows and whys of casino management and its decisions. I would HIGHLY recommend both books to anyone looking to gain insight into this fascinating industry.
Book Description
This book presents a cogent description of the main methodologies used in derivatives pricing. Starting with a summary of the elements of Stochastic Calculus, Quantitative Methods in Derivatives Pricing develops the fundamental tools of financial engineering, such as scenario generation, simulation for European instruments, simulation for American instruments, and finite differences in an intuitive and practical manner, with an abundance of practical examples and case studies. Intended primarily as an introductory graduate textbook in computational finance, this book will also serve as a reference for practitioners seeking basic information on alternative pricing methodologies.
Domingo Tavella is President of Octanti Associates, a consulting firm in risk management and financial systems design. He is the founder and chief editor of the Journal of Computational Finance and has pioneered the application of advanced numerical techniques in pricing and risk analysis in the financial and insurance industries. Tavella coauthored Pricing Financial Instruments: The Finite Difference Method. He holds a PhD in aeronautical engineering from Stanford University and an MBA in finance from the University of California at Berkeley.
Customer Reviews:
Computational finance: Tavella.......2005-03-27
Badly written/errors/typos all over.
Reviews/praise (on back cover) are meaningless & misleading.
The proof is in the reading!.......2002-08-14
Over 100 students in Berkeley's Master's in Financial Engineering Program have so far successfully mastered state-of-the-art derivatives pricing using the material in this textbook. In "The proof of the pudding is in the eating" test, this book earns an A+.
John O'Brien, Executive Director MFE Program, U.C. Berkeley
Excellent Reference for Computational Finance.......2002-08-09
This is an excellent introduction book on computational finance. It covers Monte Carlo simulation for pricing and scenario generations and finite difference methods very well. I really like the part on Monte Carlo simulation with various variance reduction techniques such as Brownian Bridge.
The author not only presents the methodologies, but he also tells the readers their limitations. This book is also a good resource for basics of stochastic processes most commonly needed in practice. I think the book is beneficial both to practitioners and students who really wants to consider financial engineering as a career.
Excellent resource.......2002-08-06
Whether you're a practitioner or a student, this text is great. It is succinctly written, covering everything from fundamental theories then leading into practical applications. While it is not for the mentally flaccid, if your sharp enough, you'll find it very useful.
A book for the mathematically inclined.......2002-07-15
The book covers pricing of derivatives and the underlying computational methods. This broad range of topics covers aspects like stochastic calculus, risk neutral pricing and computational methods. The communication of this broad range of topics is a challenge and the book might be fine tuned to better teach the reader besides the intuition of the methods, the detailed implementation. It is suitable for people with a very strong mathematics and programming background, but is a tough read if one wants to learn these subjects. In order to become a good how -to book, the examples provided need to be expanded and ideally worked out in a more detailed fashion. One great add on might be to have a disk with sample code, that shows how the different methods work and how to implement them.
Positive is:
- Good section on stochastic calculus
- Good introduction to risk free pricing
Areas for improvement
- Expand examples
- Better quality check to avoid typos, that are especially annoying in formulas
- If this book is to be used as a textbook or for self study, practice examples with solutions would be great, as the reader can then work through these to internalize the material and in addition check if he has fully understood the material
Overall I can only recommend the book to people with strong liking of a mathematical treatment of a subject, strong programming skills and little need for detailed examples. It does not go into sufficient detail on how to implement the different simulation strategies into code (provides only "pseudo code") to teach the computational aspects.
Book Description
Can a corporation have a conscience? What is wrong with reverse discrimination? Can ethical management and managed care coexist? Hoffman, Frederick, and Schwartz address these and many other current, intriguing, often complex issues in corporate morality. This introductory business ethics text contains a thorough general introduction on ethical theory, 54 readings, and 25 cases. Divided into five parts, each with an introduction that presents the major themes of its articles and cases, the text contains an impartial, point-counterpoint presentation of different perspectives on the most important issues being debated in business ethics. Each chapter ends with questions that can be used for student discussion, review, tests/quizzes, or for student assignments. The fourth edition has 27 new readings, 15 new cases, and 10 new mini-cases.
Book Description
This book offers a broad and balanced introduction to financial markets across the world, describing the various financial sectors in clear, easy to understand terms. The book provides comprehensive coverage of commercial and investment banking, foreign exchange, money and bond markets, trade finance, stock markets, options, futures, and other derivatives products--making it the ideal primer for those who require a basic understanding of, or who are new to, the world of finance.
Customer Reviews:
Quality book - great summary.......2006-01-09
This book gives a good summary of several important concepts related to the financial markets. It is a truly introductory level book but it is highly recommended if you are looking for a complete overview to fill up the gaps in your basic knowledge. Highly readable, even for people without a formal background in economoy but with a basic practical knowledge of the financial markets.
One negative point concerns paragraphs where the history of certain concepts is described or where practical examples are given, applying to different countries in the world : these are often too elaborated without any clear added value.
This book is also recommended by 'The Economist' magazine.
Apparently this book rocks........2004-02-21
When an engineering student completely unfamiliar with economics can use this book to prepare a comprehensive collection of lectures for a large group of Ph.D.-level students in Beijing during the transcontinental flight, it is obvious that this book is extremely capable of teaching. Read the news article:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/02/19/nchina19.xml&sSheet=/news/2004/02/19/ixnewstop.html
However, that makes you question the complexity of the profession and the necessity of the professors teaching it, because if someone can effectively become an expert one a plane trip, it can't be that complicated. That, or Mr. Valdez is a genius who knows how to take something enormously complex and transform it into something incredibly simple.
Truly introductory.......2003-10-01
Although the book by Valdez is truly introductory it does give a good overview of financial markets. It is a pity that Black and Scholes' model or binomial trees are mentioned as too difficult. Different option strategies are mentioned but not explained. One or two graphs would have made it a lot clearer, but as the writer indicates on several occasions, that is outside the scope of this book. For a more thorough understanding of financial markets this book is a good introduction but not enough to really get a good idea.
Book Description
Revised and updated to reflect the latest thinking in the area of cash flow analysis, Cash Flow and Security Analysis, is written with the underlying assumption that cash flow analysis is the most important tool at the investor's disposal. You will discover why cash flow is quickly replacing earnings as the primary tool among securities analysts and how they can identify undervalued securities using cash flow analysis. This important reference shows you how to avoid common costly mistakes.

Best Investing Book I Have Ever Read.......2002-07-22
This book lays the foundation for making money in the markets. It is clear and to the point. The only book you really need.
UP 45% LAST YEAR THANKS TO THIS BOOK!!.......2000-08-12
I'VE COMPLETELY AVOIDED THE INTERNET HIGHFLYERS-THEY DON'T GENERATE FREE CASH FLOW. ON THE OTHER HAND THE BOOK PUT ME INTO COMPANIES WHOSE UNDERVALUED STOCKS QUICKLY TURNED AROUND WITH THERE LOW DEBT HIGH FREE CASH FLOW. I PARTICULARLY LIKED THE WAY THE AUTHORS LOOK AT CORPORATE FAT
Not Helpful.......2000-02-07
I re-read sections of this book on cash flow analysis and found it much less useful than 5 years ago when I read the first edition. The market does not care anymore about smaller high free cash flow and low debt companies.
I've made 33% a year by buying growth stocks!.......1999-08-03
I buy growth stocks - not small to mid-cap deep value basic industry cyclicals. Buy Growth not Value! FREE CASH FLOW ANALYSIS DOES NOT WORK ANYMORE!
I'VE AVERAGED 27% PER YEAR DUE TO THIS BOOK.......1999-07-24
I BOUGHT THIS BOOK 5 YEARS AGO. WHILE I MISSED OUT ON MANY STOCKS THAT DOUBLED, I ALSO ESCAPED STOCKS THAT FELL IN HALF-OR MORE. I HAVE TURNED IN VERY CONSISTANT RETURNS OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME-WHAT'S WRONG WITH 27% PER YEAR?

Book Description
Mistrust, argues John O. Whitney, forments meddling corporate bureaucracies that police even the most trivial transactions--squelching innovation and dragging down revenues with crippling administrative overhead. It discourages sales from talking to marketing, marketing to manufacturing, or manufacturing to design. (Or any of them talking to customers of suppliers.) And it provokes harassed managers to endlessly massage their budget and forecast numbers. . .and their superiors to doubt the results they submit.
Customer Reviews:
Great insight and sharp wit.......1998-07-10
I loved this book. Whitney uses great examples and a sharp tongue to expose many of the myths of our current management thinking. It is laugh-out-loud funny at points, and his writing style flows very well. There is some very good theory in here.
