Project Management made easy.......2005-08-12
This book was able to help me understand Project Management a lot easier. At the time i was doing a project management course, and the subject was very difficult for my collegues and I to comprehend. But as we read this book, we were better able to understand the subject a lot better. Thank you Amazon you have made learning a whole lot easier.
Thorough but dull.......2004-11-11
Thorough, comprehensive, and dull as dirt. I have three major complaints about this book (1) it's boring, (2) it insults my intelligence, and (3) the authors are practitioners but don't sound like it. They sound like academics who are divorced from the real world.
I'm not a PM but I've been involved with a lot of projects and many of the things the authors say to do strike me as ridiculous. Such as:
* Having an icebreaker even if everyone already knows each other.
* Developing a formal team contract about what rules the group will use to interact even if there is already a culture within the company that implies those rules.
* Having a TEAM meeting to define all the steps to finish a project to the agonizing level of detail of breaking down a business plan into "a series of interim deliverables such as an outline, the rough draft, final draft, and final draft with illustrations."
Yes, in theory, that's a good way to run a project, but in reality it will probably just irritate your team members.
Not that there isn't a lot of good material in this book. It covers everything you need to know and is very thorough. Just take what seems reasonable and leave the rest. If you want a more entertaining read that teaches the fundamentals but not the micro-details check out Lessons in Project Management by Tom Mochal and Jeff Mochal.
An essential book for all project managers.......2003-04-16
Whether you are a project manager, someone who manages project managers or the poor soul picked to "manage" that career-killing, out of control project, this book is for you.
Breaking down the practice of project management into easy to learn steps, Martin and Tate take you through the basics of project management.
Using the principles defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Martin and Tate take you through each step, from assembling your team and assigning roles through to completion (and celebration!).
If you are uneasy about managing projects or simply don't know what is entailed, this book will put you at ease. Once you understand the basic principles of managing a project (any project!) and lay out the steps defined, it is easy to bring your projects under control.
Whether you take the Martin-Tate class on Project Management or not, this book belongs in your library. As with any good reference book, you'll find yourself referring back to it over time.
Great Resouce for New Project Managers.......2002-12-21
Paula Martin and Karen Tate have created an excellent guide for those transitioning to the role of project manager. This book is well organized, well written, and presents the complicated topics of project management in a straightforward and easy to understand fashion. The CORE Project Methodology (CORE PM) presented in the text differs from most mainstream methodologies in its simplicity, yet it provides all of the key functionality needed to manage the project life cycle.
The authors emphasize four of the five PMI project process (initiation, planning, execution, and closure), and embed the fifth (control) as a thread running throughout the other four. As most project managers would agree, planning is the key process in a successful project, and this is where the authors have focused their attention. Their treatment of the planning process, from identifying scope through building the project schedule, is presented in a step by step manner which is quite easy to understand and follow.
The text presents several tools and techniques that the new project manager can employ to involve the project team in the planning process. These tools and techniques will help develop a sense of ownership in the project by the team.
All in all, this book is an excellent introduction to all aspects of project management, and provides some simple, yet effective, tools and techniques for managing the project life cycle.
Best book for new project managers.......2002-11-22
If I had to recommend just one book for the novice project manager, this would be the book. Nicely designed, easy to read and well organized. This book has a practical orientation so it will not be satisfying to the academically inclined but if you are starting your first project and are looking for help then GET THIS BOOK AND READ IT.

One of the best I found.......2007-01-09
An excellent book for anyone considering starting their own business. It reads like a book, and has projects like a workbook. Do yourself a favor- do NOT skip through the project sections. Buy yourself a notebook, and do each section in order and as instructed, b/c quite frankly- if you can't do that, then you probably lack the self discipline to succeed at your own business.
I must have checked out every book in my local library when I was thinking about starting my own business, and I read them all. When I checked out this one, however, I immediately went to the Amazon site and ordered my own copy to keep.
Oh, and my business is doing quite well, thank you. :)

Essential reading for entrepreneurs.......2004-12-03
The vast majority of books on business and entrepreneurship focus heavily on theory and case study, and lack practical, easy-to-follow steps to help you get started. This book helps you to identify what you're passionate about, and how to go about creating a dream business around whatever it is that you enjoy.
Romanus takes his years of experience working with literally hundreds of individuals and companies and boils it down to the essentials.
This isn't your average business book - it is a series of worksheets and activities to help you define, refine, and act. If you've never owned a business, but have always dreamed of breaking out on your own - this book is for you. If you've been in a startup before, and are thinking about trying it again regardless of your previous success, you'll still find a lot of helpful information to help you avoid the mistakes and pitfalls of too many startups.
Also -- if you get a chance, I highly recommend attending one of Romanus' events. He is energetic and provides great information. Its not just a rah-rah, motivational session -- you'll find it very valuable.
Thorough but product-focused.......2004-03-24
This book is exceptionally thorough; detailed and practical, with tons of worksheets and exercises to perform. However, it seems very focused on product-based business, versus service businesses. The author does include service businesses in his examples, but the exercises and worksheets seem to me to be very helpful for those people providing an actual product, with suppliers and vendors and product margins and the like. Overall a recommended book, especially if you're looking for an exceptionally detailed blueprint for moving from idea to execution.
Great advice, easy to read, very motivating!!.......2003-11-30
I just started my business several months ago and it has been a roller coaster ride! There have been some really discouraging days and this book helps me find new ideas and inspiration to keep on going. Romanus provides great advice and motivation to follow your dreams, I feel like I have a personal small business consultant beside me as I read this book!

try selling used books on Amazon.......2007-07-08
Some of the ideas mentioned seem like more work than a traditionl job and some are too artsy craftsy for me, but women today do have more options than ever before. With the introduction of the internet, we are no longer doomed to sell vitamins to friends, dream about life on top of a pyramid, or set up childcare services in our home, if we're already stretched too thin with our own motherly duties. I wrote a book about selling books n Amazon: 'The Stay-at-Home Moms Secret Guide,' because it is one of the lowest risk, lowest investment, profitble ideas that I have come across. Who would have thought it possible to tap into the biggest book bazaar in the world, reaching across the globe, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, from your own home. Sorry to take this opportunity to plug my own idea, but, if you want a real opportunity to make extra-cash (I make $4,000 a month working part-time), I think I've found one of the best ideas available. Scouting for used books is fun! But, if selling used books isn't for you, you might find somethig in Priscilla Huff's book. Just don't give up. I tried a few other options before finding one that really brought in the money I need--there's something out there that's rght for you too.

Home Business.......2007-02-06
Lots of great information in this book. If you are interested in starting a home business this book really helps you put things together.
A Good First Step .......2006-12-12
I conduct workshops based on my book "Capitalizing On Being Woman Owned" and in almost every class 30% of the attendees are in the first stages of starting a business or even just thinking about it. This book would be a good exploratory resource for them. Ms. Huff provides practical information for many micro-businesses. Part of the book is a "how-to" with explanations for making critical decisions. It is a great first exposure to starting a business and provides resources that will give the details. It's probably not for the woman who wants to build an international corporation. But it is for the woman who wants to start a small business that suits her personality and situation.
Not a book for the 21st century.......2006-05-08
I think that Ms Huff should rethink her strategies here.
This book is okay but does not really deal with the realities of the 21st century.
If you're looking for a book that faces the realities and challenges of today then you should read Untapped Wealth Discovered by Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison. This book shows you how to find those businesses that can survive and prosper in our economy. It's a book that pays special attentions to the needs and goals of women.
Great Career Change or Second Income Home Business Ideas.......2006-03-21
You may want a home business for a second income, or maybe a whole career change - there are thousands of options for earning a living now. I started homebusinessadvisers.com in 2004, and this is a book I read in preparation. It was useful for an over 40 woman like me. There is so much info around, it's hard to filter through it. In the end my own website has become a place to review the latest home based business ideas. Thanks to Priscilla for the initial ideas.

A Must-have Guide.......2007-04-20
This is a must-have guide if you are serious about starting your own company. The book will decrease the amount of time you need to research, and increase the amount of time you have to start making money. The book is easy to understand as it's written from the entrepreneur's perspective. Even after reading the book I find myself going back to it to use as a resource. This book is worth every penny.
e MBA'06 (NY, NY).......2006-03-27
This is one of the few books from my MBA program that has truly become a reference guide for me as I am contemplating starting a venture. I would highly recommend the book because it offers the optimal balance of case studies, core business information and extensive additional resources that are all critical to understanding what is necessary for starting a new company. Lastly, I think it is clear that the authors are highly involved in the entrepreneurial world and this comes through in all of the tips and case studies.
Patterns of Entrepreneurship.......2003-01-30
This is a comprehensive book that is a must for learning the ropes of entrepreneurship. As a graduate of the MBA program at Columbia, I had a special entrepreneurial interest and focus. I am excited to see that Jack Kaplan has added another outstanding book to complement his other books on the subject. Jack is a true entrepreneur who knows what it really takes to succeed.
Beyond the theory, this book offers practical advice........2001-10-15
What sets Jack's book apart from other entrepreneurship manuals is the depth of practical advice firmly grounded in experience. It is rare to get such access to a serial entrepreneur's accumulated wisdom. Jack's advice has been equally valuable in the classroom -- he knows what he is talking about. I would recommend this book highly to anyone with an idea that wants to become a business.
The Entrepreneur's Bible.......2001-07-28
This book is invaluable. To the new entrepreneur, it is an easy to follow guide for starting a new business -- to the experienced entrepreneur, it is a handy reference for a wide range of topics. This is truly the entrepreneur’s "bible."

Book Description
"The book has the advantage that chapters are fairly self-contained, so the reader can dip into sections that look helpful. There is good material on data sources, research details to include, checklists to use, and methodology to develop." --John M. Wilson in Journal of the Operational Research Society "This information-packed book is designed to help the researcher approach the grant application process and develop a competitive and successful application. Applying for Research Funding moves the reader through important elements of the application process: making choices at the start, making key contacts, assessing research environments, and knowing what to include on and how to write an application. Some of the other topics this helpful volume covers are writing a persuasive application to its reviewers, and what to expect when an application is or is not funded." --Science, Technology & Society "Ries and Leukefeld have brought together a wealth of experience in this field. They have produced a book which should greatly enrich the research-process literature. . . .What this book promises is a comprehensive and structured form of coaching for the novice, and a clarification and sharpening up of the process for the more seasoned researcher. The layout of the book reflects the ease with which it is intended to be read. . . . Even if one is not applying for funding, this book is worth reading prior to undertaking a major piece of research for the intelligent contribution it can make to structuring your thoughts and to making you look outside the confines of your study topic." --Ramon Pediani in Journal of Advanced Nursing In an environment of shrinking resources, getting research funding from both the government and the private sector is becoming more and more competitive. This information-packed book is designed to help the researcher approach the grant application process and develop a competitive and successful application. Applying for Research Funding moves the reader through important elements of the application process: making choices at the start, making key contacts, assessing research environments, and knowing what to include in and how to write an application. Some of the other topics this helpful volume covers are how to write a persuasive application, how to target the application to its reviewers, and what to expect when an application is or is not funded. Both the beginning and seasoned researcher will find this supportive book invaluable in embarking on and completing the grant-writing process that is so frequently vital to career enhancement.
