Customer Reviews:
Good but outdated.......2007-09-12
I enjoyed this book and its simplicity, however, found it was a little out of date.
Good Product.......2007-05-12
Very informative. It was a quick read, and gave lots of ideas for places to go for more information. Some of the links listed in the book are out of date, but considering how fast information changes on the web, I'm not surprised. A much better value than many of the other consultant books out there, and an excellent starting point for anyone considering this field.
OK for a how to book.......2007-03-09
OK for a how to book. It does not give real world experience.
Real in depth...........2007-02-07
The book goes in great detail of every aspect( financial work, alliances with certain business, all the little odds and ends for your business ) of starting the business, really really informative if you are serious of starting your shop or service.
Superior Content in this Book. A 5 Star Winner!.......2006-11-05
This book was exceptional and full of practical and useful knowledge. I obtained my wedding consultant certificate and found this book invaluable and packed with information on how to realistically start my future business. The principles were well thought out and an excellent resource. Five stars. Buy it! Elaine Bales Anchorage, Alaska

Made-to-Order for Social Marketers.......2004-12-17
This work book is chock-filled with practical help for preparing an effective social marketing plan. I enjoyed the easy-to-use forms. Many great ideas for applying social marketing too. It's so hard to find resources that relate to the unique nature and challenges of this kind of marketing. If you are a non-profit change oriented social marketer you need this book on your shelf!
Terrific resource for nonprofits.......2003-02-26
I have used this resource with clients who have few resources and little experience in social marketing. It is a well written guidebook that explains the steps in developing social marketing strategies and provides well constructed worksheets. The book is extremely enlightening for organizations who are doing this for the first time or who cannot afford high-priced consultants. As a writer without much social marketing background, it helped me help my clients. It might be worth noting that the reference is designed for U.S. use and cites resources only available here, but I still found the basic approach helpful for an overseas client.

Customer Reviews:
Powerful advice with depth - for those who mean business!.......2007-09-29
I have looked through this book, and have read the first part. The coaching exercises I have encountered so far are very thought provoking. You have to work out a lot of things as you go in this book. It is only a quick read if you skip all the work. It is almost like actually working with a coach because of how interactive it is. I am going gradually as I figure out my plan. I can't do some of the exercises yet because I don't know all the answers at this point. It really helps you develop an overall business plan, and the results of that are that you know exactly why you are making all the choices you make in establishing your practice.
Excellent Publication!.......2007-06-11
It is a very easy guide to read. As a Coach and experienced Sales Professional, it provides practical and effective excercises to follow.
I recommend this book for new and experienced Coaches.
Solid information.......2007-03-20
I have not completed the book yet, but from the 1/3 of it I"ve read, it is the kind of beginners book I was looking for. It is very basic. There have been some editing weaknesses I have noticed but that is more a function of the publisher than the author.
Oh my gosh! A great book that eloquently lays out how to prepare a stellar business plan for your coaching business........2007-03-18
I love this book. It is written by a coach for someone who wants to create their own coaching business or improve their business plan for their existing coaching business. I just finished this book a few minutes ago, and I still can't believe what a wonderful book it is. I'm a SCORE counselor, one type of business coach, and I regularly counsel wanta-be entrepreneurs and small business owners on how to prepare business plans or modify existing plans. If a client came to me and wanted to start a coaching practice, then I would be giving the client the ISBN for this book right up front.
The author has her own successful coaching business. And this book includes her story about building her coaching business. She tells us what didn't work for her and what has worked for her. She gives us all kinds of insight into what to think about and do when starting your own coaching business.
Interestingly, she has a program she sells through her coaching business that goes something like this:
1. Describe what you want
2. Explore your options
3. Create your game plan
4. Implement your plan
5. Reach your goal
This program she sells is generic. It is the same program I use when I counsel people at SCORE as to how to start a business. I have my clients: (1) Describe the business they want to create, (2) Do market research, (3) Prepare their 25-35 page business plan, (4) Implement their plan, and (5) Meet their revenue targets timely.
This book tells the reader to do the above five things to start and run a coaching business. And then there is the wonderful list of resources at the end of the book on marketing, Web sites, newsletters, articles, ebooks, public speaking, networking, etc.
About the only thing missing seemed to be a discussion on Choice of Legal Entity. Should the coach form a Limited Liability Company (LLC) or a C Corporation?
If you run a coaching business or want to start one, then I highly recommend this book to you to help you in your work. I also think you will benefit greatly by reading the two following books as supplements to this book: Plug Your Book! (ISBN: 0977240614), by Steve Weber, and Aiming at Amazon (ISBN: 093849743X), by Aaron Shepard. 5 stars!
Complete Marketing Resource for Coaches.......2005-10-05
*****
This book, though short, is succinct and very useful, very rich in content---a great guide for coaches who are wanting to begin marketing their practices. Marketing information is hard to organize, because as a coach, you really just want to know what you need to know to make your practice successful, and not a lot more than that. If you agree with me, this is the book for you.
There are lots of resources for coaches who want to delve deeper into any particular type of marketing---for example, running teleclasses---but enough basic information so that you can get started, along with time estimates, cost estimates, and estimates as to how long you would have to do any particular activity before it becomes profitable.
I really appreciated the Resource section in the back of the book covering Internet sites for sources from everything from headsets for the telephone, to e-book resources, to credit card merchants and alternatives like PayPal, etc. The Resource section is for the most part specific just to coaching, and the more general resources are useful, too, unlike some appendices.
There are assignments throughout the book for those people who enjoy exercises to assist you in actually DOING the things you need to do to market your practice. The assignments seemed good, but am using the book as a sourcebook to help me to brainstorm, so I just read over them for ideas. I cannot imagine anyone going through and doing these exercises, though, and by the end of the book NOT having a thriving practice.
This is definitely the best book I have ever read on marketing for coaches! I can't imagine how it could have been written any better or how it could have been any more helpful unless the author did the marketing FOR me :)

Customer Reviews:
Great marketing book for small professional firms........2007-08-07
This book was a real find. If you hate the idea of 'selling' your services then you'll 'love' Putman's recommendations.
Very easy to read with lots of stimulating examples and exercises to take your marketing forward successfully. In fact the book is based upon Putman's training workshops so it represents great value.
It starts with a strategy setting session where you get very clear about your service's value, potential client profile and how you get these aligned.
Moves on to specific strategies for various marketing endeavours - speaking, articles, pr etc
Some of the stories are a bit dated and it would be nice to see a revised edition that included specifics on the web and email marketing. But, on the whole these don't distract and in fact show that the wisdom inside is timeless.
Best services marketing book around.......2006-04-21
It's difficult to market a service - you're marketing the invisible. It's even more difficult to find a services-specific book on marketing. Anthony Putman cuts right to the bone with his ideas, approach and presentation. This is the best marketing book I have ever read. And, I have bought dozens to give to my friends in the service industries.
Solid advice.......2005-09-08
As someone who coaches independent professionals on how to find new clients, I especially like the advice in this book on targeting. If you don't have a target you spread yourself too thin. There is much to be gained from this book. -- Henry DeVries, founder, New Client Marketing Institute
Highly recommended.......2005-02-08
I read lots of business start-up books since I help people start successful businesses for a living. Finding a book written by someone who has something new to say is rare. This is a book which is not just a recycle of someone else's work.
Most books are written for product-based businesses so the 4 p's of marketing are applicable, but service businesses are really different. You can't taste, touch, or otherwise inspect a service before you buy.
Putman's chapter on pricing justifies the price of this book by itself. The book is also helpful in dealing with price objections, a critical part of any business. While it's pricing component is not new, the method provides a great baseline for your business.
I particularly liked the method by which Putman helps entrepreneurs creates benefit statements. People don't buy based on a feature list.
If you are a Professional / Small Business: seek no more.......2000-03-13
Simple, straithforward and to the point (hitting the mark). Good advice that does not just sound good, but is being presented in a very practical hands-on way. Very well written, very practical to implement (take your own step-by-step actions). A definite good buy and destined to become a classic.

The Marketing Plan: A Handbook
ASIN: 1574442694 |
Book Description
Two-thirds of rapid-growth firms use written business plans, according to Price, Waterhouse, Coopers 1998 Trendsetter Barometer. The survey also states that firms with written plans grow faster, achieve a higher proportion of revenues from new products and services, and enable CEOs to manage more critical business functions. How to Develop a Strategic Marketing Plan is both innovative and pragmatic in its approach. It explains how to combine the strategic vision of long-term business planning with the action-oriented thrust of a short-term marketing plan. A floppy disk - included with the book -provides planning forms and guidelines for customizing your own Strategic Market Plan (SMP). Actual case histories - from companies such as Campbell Soup, Co., Texas Instruments, Inc., and Quaker State Corp. - illustrate how business-building opportunities translate into strategies and tactics. They demonstrate the compelling relationship between internal organizational functions and external market conditions, the long- and short-term strategic marketing issues and the advantages of developing an SMP. Strategic market planning shapes the future of business. In its broadest dimension it sets in motion actions that impact long term prosperity. How to Develop a Strategic Marketing Plan gives you the tools to generate a credible strategic marketing plan so your organization can survive in the 21st century.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Little Book.......2006-03-24
Mark Ortman's "simple guide" is an easy to read, comprehensive look at the various aspects involved in self-publishing, including preparatory steps (copyright, ISBN), printing, marketing, and distributing. He offers lots of references to resources which will be useful, and he provides some tips as well.
Brevity is the chief positive attribute of this book, and it is also a weakness. You might want more about each of the subjects that Ortman raises. Another problem with the book is that much of the information involving technology is outdated, although most of the rest of the book is up-to-date.
Not everyone will want to read this book. But the beginning writer can certainly benefit from it.
Insufficient Info.......2002-07-27
This book may be a handy ADDITION to your publishing library, but it is definitely not "the" source book for marketing. In fact, in the rapidly changing world of publishing, I found that most of the information I did want to use was already out of date.
See if Self-Publishing is Right for You.......2001-11-26
This book helps you compare regular publishing with self-publishing to see if it's right for you.
Three main questions underlie the process:
Why do you want to publish your book?
Who is your audience?
What makes your book different or unique?
Chapters cover such topics as:
Learning about the industry and preparing the manuscript
Printing
Announcing your book
Distribution
Creating a demand, touring, marketing--by far the longest chapter
This book has lots of great suggestions, but he doesn't go into any very deeply. At only 62 pages, this is useful as a handbook. It is geared toward writers who needs an overview of the process, particularly those wanting more traditional paper publishing for their books.
Best Short Self-Publishing How-to Book.......2001-07-28
This simple guide is exactly that, the bare bones basics for those who don't want to wade through hundreds of pages. You can get more than three times the information for only twice the price in a book like Dan Poynter's The Self-Publishing Manual, but more is not always best for everyone. If you are the type of person who wants "Just the facts" this book could be your ideal introduction to self-publishing.
Simple is Great.......2001-01-29
Back in the late 1980's I had the privilege of attending a self-publishing workshop with Mark Ortman, the author of this excellent how-to guide. I purchased "A Simple Guide to Self-Publishing" and used the knowledge I gained to successfully publish and market my first book. I've recommended this book many times over the years, since it provides a perfect introduction to the topic. I'm happy that Mark has kept the book up to date, and that the Third Edition includes helpful information on On-Line Publishing.

With this book as their guide, readers will learn the proper organizational, analytical, and behavioral skills that are vital to consistent success in trading. Garbage.......2007-05-26
Another worthless stack of paper from Jake.
Ask yourself this question, "How could it be possible, especially for someone who does not trade profitably for a living, to teach me how to be a master trader in any length of time, not to mention the absurdity of 30 days?!" The idea is ludicrous.
As with every one of this author's "works", this book fails to deliver anything of value to real traders. It is simply not possible to teach another to be a market master, and profitable trader, when the teacher is neither.
The title alone should be a huge red flag warning that the material covered could never be useful. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it would be possible to become a market master in 30 days? Most people would be satisfied with achieving that level of success in 30 months, however, few EVER do. This book, and all of the others from this author, will never assist in getting one to that lofty goal.
BEFORE you consider purchasing any of this author's works, do yourself a favor, and research this person.
Then consider the following books, written by real traders, as stepping stones to mastery:
Mind over Markets
Markets in Profile
Trading Day by Day
Entries & Exits
Professional Stock Trading
Enhancing Trader Performance
Trading in the Zone (even though Douglas is not a trader)
Some of the best material ever written about trading was penned in the early 1900s. These are highly recommended:
anything written by Richard D. Wyckoff
Tape Reading & Market Tactics
Psychology of the Stock Market
Does Not "Follow Through" .......2007-05-20
I looked forward to Mr. Bernstein's new book as he has prided himself in the past as doing cutting-edge research (his "The Compleat Day Trader I & II" are classics).
But this is mainly another rehash of material from his other books, and I got thru it in two sittings. Although, in fairness, people who are not familiar with his prior works, may find this offering more interesting than I did.
The best thing to be gleaned here is the methodology itself. The methodology is first a setup, then a trigger, then follow through. A setup is a seasonal correlation or momentum divergence, as examples. Then a trigger gets you in the trade, like a stochastics crossover. Follow through is simply money management. The money management ideas expressed here are not stellar and are put forth better in many other books.
This experience will remind me to use Amazon's "search" feature more thoroughly before buying in the future.

Book Description
Providing therapists practical solutions to managed care's erosion of their freedom to practice, this book presents a working blueprint for a private-pay psychotherapy practice. Dana C. Ackley casts out the distortions that have crept into many clinicians' thinking as a result of reliance on third-party reimbursement. Based on his own experience, he shows how you can serve clients--and yourself--better by developing real alternatives to the pressures and bureaucracy of managed care. In clear step-by-step detail, including practical exercises and checklists, sample marketing materials, and payment plans, the volume shows you how to:
*Rediscover the economic and clinical value of your work
*Discard assumptions that might block your progress
*Educate yourself about the needs of potential clients
*Market and sell your services effectively
*Learn ethical, reasonable business-of-practice skills
*Diversify into the rewarding area of psychological consultation to businesses
No matter what your clinical style, theoretical orientation, or practice history, you will benefit from the hard-won lessons Dr. Ackley shares in this book.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Psychologists Sick of Managed Care.......2000-04-26
Dr. Ackley addresses basic issues facing the realities of being a psychologist in today's world: Managed care lowering income, managed care dictating service limits, and the largely ineffective response of the field. He first addresses what managed care's actions have been and how this has changed the field of psychology. He then relates what the field's response has been and why the interaction between the two has left psychologists on the losing side. In explaining this, he does a great job of identifying the thoughts and behaviors of practitioners that keep them trapped under managed care's control. The most important and useful aspects of the text are his chapters on the proof that psychology is valuable, how it can control it's own destiny, and how a psychologist can go about doing it. His suggestions are realistic and practical. Overall, I found this book energizing and useful.
