Book Description
A common-sense approach to achieving success in one's life offers workable, step-by-step methods and positive visualization techniques to help readers personalize goals, trust creativity, transcend old beliefs and limitations, and transform positive thinking into positive action. Original published in 1988 Berkley Publishing under the title of "The Advanced Formula For Total Success." For 13 years it continued to sell under that title. In 2002 Berkley Publishing discontinued publishing "The Advanced Formula For Total Success." As soon as it went out of print, it became a collector's item with copies selling for up to $100 per copy on the Amazon.com used books marketplace. In 2003 Dr. Anthony decided to update the book and republish it under the original name of Beyond Positive Thinking with an introduction by Joe Vitale.

Another Terrific Book Dr. Anthony.......2007-08-03
Dr. Anthony's book is full of unique insights and instructions that you don't find anywhere else. Some chapters alone are worth the price of the book (probably more). Dr. Anthony's explanation of how we are perfect just as we are, and why what we have and do are separate from who we are, is an essential truth for peace of mind and successful living. His mantra of questioning old beliefs and replacing them with new, empowering ones is indispensable. For example, most of us believe that success takes hard work. If that's what we believe, then that's how it will be. What if we believed the opposite? i.e. success is relatively easy. A lot of Dr. Anthony's teachings resonate or are similar to those expounded by others, but he has a way of getting to the core that others don't. If you want to improve your situation in a way that won't add grey hair, read his book.
Great Next Step for Students of the Law of Attraction.......2007-06-22
*****
This isn't a perfect book, but it was so valuable I couldn't rate it less than five stars. "Beyond Positive Thinking" goes beyond introductory Law of Attraction (LOA) books like "The Secret" and the Abraham-Hicks books to a deeper exploration of LOA. It will appeal to people who want to know more and who want to understand why.
An example: "Anytime your mind is out of the present moment you cannot receive the answer you need from Higher Intelligence." This makes sense to me, and helps me to understand why I would want to stay present and mindful, although I'd never thought of it this way. Another example: exploring the Law of Circulation (with respect to money), which is one reason money is called "currency"---as an "idea in action" it will flow one way or another, either flowing with life (which is what you want) or with unexpected expenses (which is what you don't want) when there is a blockage.
This book is recommended and promoted by Joe Vitale, a popular speaker and author of LOA materials. He calls it the one book he would have on the LOA above all others.
The flaws: Some recycled information (for the advanced student), poor editing, light self-promotion. The flaws are very minor compared to the great value of the information.
If you are not an advanced student of the LOA, I would recommend Michael Losier's "The Law of Attraction" instead of this book.
It is a book I will read again and again. Highly recommended.

Beyond Positive Thinking, Wow what a life changer!!!.......2007-05-19
This book has changed my perception of a lot of things and made me realize that you if you're never happy with what you have, you will never be happy with what your going to get. You will always be looking for the next thing that's going to make you happy, the truth is nothing ever does. Change comes from the inside out, not the outside in. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to change their life for the better. It's opened up my eyes and removed the blinds of lies.
One of my favourites.......2007-04-03
This is a no-nonsense, must-read guide for anyone looking to make a change in their life (which, I might venture, is everyone). It includes great concepts and techniques, as well as the rationale behind them. I strongly recommend this book to everyone I know.
Book Description
Waste has plagued almost every industrial-age firm for the past century. In this powerfully argued alternative to conventional cost management thinking, experts H. Thomas Johnson and Anders Bröms assert that any company can avoid the waste that is generated through excessive operating costs in the short run and excessive losses from market instability in the long run. To gain more secure levels of profitability, management must simply change how it thinks about work and how it organizes work.
Profit Beyond Measure details how two extremely profitable manufacturers, Toyota and the Swedish truck maker Scania, have rejected the traditional mechanistic mindset of managing by results that generates waste. Johnson and Broms explain how Toyota and Scania achieve their legendary cost advantage through a revolutionary concept they call managing by means (MBM). Instead of being driven to meet preconceived accounting targets, the production systems of Toyota and Scania are governed by the three precepts that guide all living systems: self-organization, interdependence, and diversity.
Amid a wealth of new insights into Toyota's vaunted system, Johnson and Bröms introduce the tools of MBM to show how design, production, and profitability analysis are done to customer order. They demonstrate that by following the principles that emulate life systems, even a lean and profitable company can organize work to greatly lessen its long-term earnings instability and sharply reduce its short-run operating costs.
Scania has achieved sixty-five years of financial stability and longevity in the face of fierce competition. Toyota has amassed a market value since 1988 that has rivaled -- or sometimes surpassed -- the American "Big Three" automakers combined. The principles that Johnson and Bröms set forth in Profit Beyond Measure can guarantee the same richer, longer life to any company that applies them.

Detailed reviews.......2006-04-13
From my blog(which is why it is written this way)
I finished reading "Profit Beyond Measure" subtitled "Extraordinary Results through Attention to Work and People" by Johnson and Broms. Good book. I have learned many things at SYNNEX. One of the great learnings is attention to detailed numbers and cost accounting. This has tremendous value and the SYNNEX system is truly awesome on granular numbers. This book reinforces the need for good cost accounting systems as long as they are logical. A lot of the book is about having the right systems. As a Systems Design Engineer, I really appreciate the books attention to systems and interdependence. Part of the problem with measuring is that interrelations are often overlooked.
A part of me at times feels that sometimes we are not totally on the right track though. Profit Beyond Measure reinforces what I already know about intuition. It will help me hold firm in areas where I know in my heart we are right to change (or not). Some of it comes back to my continual short term vs. long term dilemma.

Tom Johnson, financial heretic!.......2001-04-14
Comments on Profit Beyond Measure by Tom Johnson:
Tom Johnson's overview of business thinking is astoundingly clear, the beginning of the revolution that Dr. W. Edwards Deming demanded for so many years.
The Toyota story is told beautifully in chapter 3; now I begin to understand what happens in that Kentucky facility.
Chapter 4 is the weakness of the book; there is no there there. The Scania "secret" is not in the same universe as that at Toyota. What more evidence do we need than the sale of the company?
Chapter 5 is fascinating. Tom Johnson the heretic! A modern day Martin Luther! No one on Wall Street will want to know about orderline analysis. However, if those using it prosper...
The stock market vanish? That is precisely what will happen if Tom Johnson's thinking catches on. And that can't happen too soon. It may already be too late to preserve our culture as we know it. But then, it may be time.
Most in business will not want to hear the last two chapters. But no one wants to hear that they have cancer either, right? This patient (the world economy) has cancer, and no one knows if survival is possible.
I can't wait for the next iteration of this "stuff." The books that Johnson (and a few others, like Dr. Ed Baker) are going to write could make all the difference in our future. Dr. Norman Borlaug and his cohorts are trying to feed the world in spite of potentially deadly water shortages; Johnson and a few like-minded intellectuals are trying to feed the world correct thinking in spite of potentially deadly shortsightedness.
The Book the Business World Has Been Waiting for.......2001-01-19
Since the day Amazon delivered my copy of Johnson and Broms' Profit Beyond Measure,I have taken delight with every page. This book is a wonderfully brilliant, masterful book that may be the serious business book of this decade in the way Senge's Fifth Discipline was for the 1990's. Insightful writers such as Margeret Wheatley and Danah Zohar have artfully open our eyes to the potential of viewing organizations as naturally evolving living systems. Notwithstanding their powerful insights, the actual application of these ideas left a lot to the imagination as to how they would actually be applied. Johnson and Broms, however, provide the substance and put the meat on the bones of the many complexity and chaos theory books available today. Johnson and Broms tell us with precision and in entaintaining detail the stories of Toyota and Scania Truck and how, respectively, they have gone forty and sixty-sixty years without losing money---how, they manage by means, as part of living systems, not trying to orchestrate management by the results (a notion of believing that you can fix future events to happen within a management plan) as America's Big 3 auto companies have over the past century. Johnson and Broms take us inside of the Toyota and Scania plants and board rooms, helping us see how they produce only according to actual orders, how they design and set up assembly and modulated processes to avoid waste (not eliminate it, avoid it in the first place!), how they treat their employees, how they see customers and market and more. Drawing from the principles articulated by Gregory Bateson, Johnson and Bohms help us see the unique milieu and overriding philosophy and work culture that is reflective of an open, living system, that relies on "balanced, cyclical patterns of continuous flow of the work for every person in the organization." Before reading this book, I only had a vague notions of how chaos, complexity, and new science theories applied to the emerging organizations of today. As a result of reading this book, however, I believe I now can grasp what it means, in real and substantive terms, for an organization to exist, evolve, and succeed as part of living system. This is a book for the new century. Every business can learn from this book and those that don' will perish while Toyota, Scania, and others of this fabric will thrive in our increasingly complex and interdependent world. I recommend this book to any one interested in business theory, organizational development, or building a better organization. Tom Coens
20th Century Manufacturing Illuminated.......2000-11-15
For manufacturers the 20th century was the story of Ford and Toyota. The story of the transition from mass production to lean production has been told many times, but often focusing on the techniques, not the strategy. Professor Johnson has developed a profound insight into the strategy behind Toyota's approach, framed as management by means, rather than management by results.
This is the most important insight into the Toyota Production System which has come my way in the last ten years. Johnson demonstrates why the Toyota Management by Means approach gives superior long term value to customers, shareholders and employees.
Profit without Measure is essential reading for any manufacturer building a strategy for World Class Manufacturing.
At last, a vision of capitalism with heart.......2000-11-15
I've always found the notion that businesses should 'maximise profit' to be naive, but to come up with a better business rationale seems to get real messy, quickly.
This book uses some concepts that moved me when I read Fritjof Capra's 'The Web of Life', and applies them to effectively and realistically running a business in a competitive environment.
In integrating living systems concepts with management control issues, this is the most philosophically thoughtful book I've seen written by someone who understands accounting.

A Marketing Book for Everyone.......2007-09-27
Kathryn writes beautifully and makes her point clearly with entertaining marketing examples and analogies we are all familiar with. I was expecting a technical book for people trained in "marketing." This book is so applicable to anyone who has a product or service. Some of the principles suggested can be incorporated immediately into daily communication without further investment. I had no idea how much I'd get out of it.
Great Real World Tools.......2007-03-26

Necessary for every teacher and student of the future!.......1998-03-20
Win Wenger, Ph.D. provides here, in this very book, some of the most profound tools to increase your creativity and intelligence. There is no other book that I have found which covers so many profound issues and techniques than this one. The only ones which have ever come close have also been written by this author! An absolute must read for every student and teacher!
Book Description
Linear or vertical thinking was always close to tunnel vision. Then came lateral thinking which brought a breadth of thought, but often ended up with ideas too impractical for business. Based on a new concept called triangular thinking, Business Beyond the Box moves beyond limitations by offering a field-proven set of eight thinking strategies that create a flow of ideas and brings about a step-change in actual results.

A Good Read!.......2002-09-11
John O'Keeffe's book is worth a read for the simple but powerful message that it conveys: Too many people in business today are devoted to incremental improvement when they should be striving for big goals and breakthrough performance. Also of note are the techniques that he describes for cultivating creative thinking within a business. While much of the remainder will seem like a re-hash of basic problem-solving and common-sense creative thinking methodology, we from getAbstract nevertheless recommend this book for its motivational message: Think big.
A "must" for entrepreneurs, business managers, advertisers........2000-06-05
Business Beyond The Box: Applying Your Mind For Breakthrough Results is a lively, engaging, thought-provoking and even inspiring approach to innovative, creative, profitable approach for success in today's highly competitive, rapidly evolving marketplace. John O'Keeffe presents eight thinking strategies, utilizing creative thinking, acting on innovative ideas, the value of appropriate and productive mind-sets, and a great deal more. Business Beyond The Box is highly accessible, "must" reading for entrepreneurs, corporate managers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors, advertisers, and anyone else seeking better and more effective ways to promote and sell their services or products.
A Breath of Fresh Air!.......2000-04-07
Reading this book is unlike any 'business' book I have read over the last few years. O'Keeffe has a very light-hearted, but serious way with words and "Business Beyond the Box" is a very compelling read.
O'Keeffe takes you through a number of steps and strategies that are practical, applicable and which, I feel, give the reader a sense of ownership. By this I mean that it is very easy for the reader to identify with the situations that O'Keeffe describes. Also, although the main theme running through the book is based around 'step' rather than 'incremental' change, it is very easy for the reader to identify instant work-enhancing changes. For instance, mind-mapping, and six hat thinking.
Business Beyond the Box certainly makes you take a step back from (or a step out of) the traditional business way of thinking and makes you question your own thought processes. O'Keeffe gives you an alternative mindset with which to work and live.
Book Description
From two leaders in executive education at Harvard Business School, here are the mental habits and proven strategies you need to achieve outstanding results in any negotiation.
Whether you’ve “seen it all” or are just starting out,
Negotiation Genius will dramatically improve your negotiating skills and confidence. Drawing on decades of behavioral research plus the experience of thousands of business clients, the authors take the mystery out of preparing for and executing negotiations—whether they involve multimillion-dollar deals or improving your next salary offer.
What sets negotiation geniuses apart? They are the men and women who know how to:
•Identify negotiation opportunities where others see no room for discussion
•Discover the truth even when the other side wants to conceal it
•Negotiate successfully from a position of weakness
•Defuse threats, ultimatums, lies, and other hardball tactics
•Overcome resistance and “sell” proposals using proven influence tactics
•Negotiate ethically and create trusting relationships—along with great deals
•Recognize when the best move is to walk away
•And much, much more
This book gets “down and dirty.” It gives you detailed strategies—including talking points—that work in the real world even when the other side is hostile, unethical, or more powerful. When you finish it, you will already have an action plan for your next negotiation. You will know what to do and why. You will also begin building your own reputation as a negotiation genius.

Create Desired Outcomes.......2007-09-29
Good negotiators are methodical, so it's not surprising that this book takes a methodical approach. For example, it's laid out in three parts that are naturally sequential. Each part consists of chapters in progressive order. This structure helps the reader absorb the material rapidly. Not everyone is comfortable with a methodical approach or a structured way of thinking. But unstructured thinking and haphazard approaches put a very low ceiling on performance in negotiation and in many other disciplines. The book itself exudes the methodical approach and structured thinking that are key to good negotiating. The authors obviously take their own medicine.
You may have read a new book in which the author claims to have the insight everyone else is missing and then contradicts what came before. Diet books are notorious for that. Fortunately, Negotiation Genius builds on the existing body of knowledge. Having read other books on the topic of negotiation, I was pleased to find that this book is consistent with the established literature while also providing new insight.
Three things I found especially helpful were in Part III, "Negotiating in the Real World." There were:
Chapter 9: Confronting Lies and Deceptions. Many of the strategies espoused in negotiation books, seminars, and courses work well if the other party is negotiating in good faith and trying to work with you. But even small, unintended deceptions (they believe it, even if it isn't true) can easily undermine otherwise brilliant strategies. A good negotiator doesn't use any particular strategy in isolation. A negotiation genius goes a step further, by using strategies specifically targeted at uncovering lies and deceptions, then using other strategies to overcome them with the best outcome in mind. This book provides those strategies.
Chapter 11: Negotiating from a Position of Weakness. We've all had to negotiate from a position of weakness. Situations include such things as negotiating a salary, dealing with the IRS for a reduction in the amount of unpaid taxes they erroneously claim you owe, trying to get help getting another flight when yours is cancelled at the last moment, or solving a problem with a customer who seems to hold all the cards while being unreasonable. You can probably add to this list, with very little effort. So, what do you do in these situations? If you have nothing really to offer the other party, you can't do a quid pro quo or do any kind of bartering. If you have nothing to offer, how can you motivate the other party to help you get what you want? The answers to these, and related questions, are in this chapter.
Chapter 12: When Negotiations Get Ugly: Dealing with Irrationality, Distrust, Anger, Threats, and Ego. Things can get out of hand, simply because someone assumes an insult you didn't make or misreads your intentions. People look at things through their own lenses, based on their situation, their culture, their experience. Negative emotions can cause both sides to engage in mutual destruction. A case history that illustrates how close we can come is the Cuban Missile Crisis. This book uses that case history to explain several strategies for defusing a situation and getting things back on track.
As mentioned earlier, this book consists of three parts.
Part I: The Negotiator's Toolkit consists of three chapters. Here, we learn about claiming and creating value. The authors give the reader several proven tools for obtaining the information needed for claiming and creating value. They call those tools, collectively, "investigative negotiation."
Part II: The Psychology of Negotiation also consists of three chapters. The essence of Part II is that we are all human beings. We make mistakes, and we have our biases. But the biases are systematic and predictable. The authors draw from the latest research to provide the reader with tools to help avoid biases. They also provide tools to help the reader identify biases of the other side, and actually use those to advantage.
Part III: Negotiating in the Real World makes up almost half of the book. It consists of eight chapters, and I've already covered three of them. The other five that I didn't cover are all worth reading and absorbing. Actually, all eight are worth studying and implementing, using the book as an ongoing coach.
As noted earlier, Negotiation Genius is consistent with the established literature. What I didn't note then, and will note now, is it's consistent with more than just the established negotiation literature. The basic tenet of the book is that if you work to overcome your ignorance, you will be able to work from an informed position and therein lies your real power. The details of how and why to do that, along with some things not to do, are what you will gain from reading this book. The authors assert that going beyond simply reading it will give you the best value for your book purchase. Conscientiously study and apply the principles in an ever-increasing circle of what you consider negotiable, and you will not only reap huge personal rewards but also enrich others. After reading this book, I am inclined to agree with them.
Be sure to read Getting Past No, Getting to Yes, and The Power of a Positive No, as well.

true value within a mystery.......2006-01-21
a friendly and ever-illuminating exploration of the founding tenets for success within a special company. From the tenets explored, one gleans practical and proven methods that can be employed within a variety of organizations.
The message is resoundingly clear: though the methods are not complex, it is crucial that organizational members consistently apply them (methods) on the road to success. Success will follow. There is a lot of competition out there, so DO IT RIGHT!
The author writes with a flair for personal stories, which makes the message easily digestible and subsequently applicable. He endears us to the characters in the story. I call it a story because it evokes a mystery: who was Brennan Frederick Newell, 1974-2000; how did he possess such wisdom at a relatively young age; and what company is Diamond?
After reading such an intriguing book that offers so many valuable tips AND evokes such mystery, the reader feels compelled to hire Bud Bilanich as the consultant for her/his company and ask him all the relevant questions. Tip to CEO's out there: read the book and then hire Bud to come out and revamp your company. Ask him the aforementioned questions for me and e-mail me the answers!!!
Bravo to Mr. Bilanich for offering us a highly readable and engaging book that imparts truly valuable lessons. Best book I've read from this publisher.
Simple, straightforward and effective.......2004-03-10
Doctor B has done it again! This is the third of his books that I've read. In each one, he has demonstrated a complete and thorough understanding of his subject, boiled the concepts down to the core ideas and presented those ideas in an easy to understand (and easy to enact)manner. His common sense approach, both in his books and in person, plays well in all settings, from corporate headquarters to the factory floor. And more importantly, it drives business results!
Great advice for even the smallest company!.......2002-11-08
Mr. Bilanich's book says it simply and with useful tools for any size organization. Not the latest fad, just practical and easily incorporated 'secrets' that are the fundamental basics of achieving a high performing organization.
4 secrets of high performing organizations:Beyond the flavor.......2002-11-02
This book was easy to ready yet full of very good suggestions that can be used on a daily basis. I found myself trying his methods before even finishing the book! It's concise, practical, and a sensible approach to the many issues that face us in our daily business lives. I would recommend it to any manager that wants to increase productivity and motivation with their staff.
"Learn From Someone Who's Actually Been There".......2002-10-08
I have known Bud for 20 years and we have worked on projects together, discussing why things worked and why they didn't. This book shows that he's been tracking his own organizational learning and is making that body of knowledge available for others to shorten their own learning curves. If you are a manager, consultant, or trainer, I'd take advantage of the real-life experience reflected in this book. It's an easy way for you and your people to gain a personal edge on high performance through a relaxed, storytelling approach; and, all of the situations will look and feel very familiar to managers and supervisors everywhere.
