2 out of 5 stars no substance, a very quick read.......2007-03-29

i borrowed this book from a local library and is very disappointed after reading it. this book is mostly big words and no substance. there is no detailed real life or even theoretical solution to any of the problems he proposed. for example, section 7.4 is captial allocation at Deutsche Bank, sounds very intriguing, but when I actaully went to page 160, author only used less them half page to sum up Deutsche's strategy as Captial and Liquidy, no substance or detail whatsoever.

I finished this book in less than 3 hours and learned nothing except a few buzz words, and that is about it.

The previous commenter gave this book 5 star. take that 5 star with a huge grain of salt.

5 out of 5 stars Read it before all the other Basel ii books.......2006-01-11

I found this to be an excellent read. It was extremely eye opening.

Chorafas focuses his attention on the processes, decisions, and actions which are needed to execute an appropriate compliance strategy effectively. His observations and recommendations are based on real-world data.

The material is carefully organized within sixteen chapters whose subjects range from "Economic Capital Defined" to "Software which can help in IRB implementations"

This text had the potential to be completely dry. Yet this book reads easily. It is well-written, understandable, and generally clear to professionals without a background in finance or economics.

Therefore, I highly recommend this book to all decision-makers and professionals responsible for compliance in all banks.

I also recommend this book to professionals who are looking to heal risk and compliance wounds from the past and present.

Well-done!

Book Description

An authoritative text on cost of capital for both the nonprofessional and the valuation expert -- now revised and expanded

In endeavoring to practice sound corporate finance, there is perhaps nothing so critical, nor slippery, as cost of capital estimation. The second edition of Cost of Capital: Estimation and Applications combines a state-of-the-art treatise on cost of capital estimation with an accessible introduction for the nonprofessional.

This comprehensive yet usable guide begins with an exposition of basic concepts understandable to the lay person and proceeds gradually from simple applications to the more complex procedures commonly found in the marketplace. New features of the revised and expanded Second Edition include chapters on Economic Value Added (EVA) and reconciling cost of capital in the income approach with valuation multiples in the market approach, as well as expanded coverage of cost of capital in the courts and handling discounts for marketability. Cost of Capital remains an incomparable resource for all parties interested in effective business valuation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Valuation Tool Available.......2000-12-19

Pratt took his many years of valuation experience and put it in this one book. The book reviews the theory and practice of how to derive a discount rate for use in a DCF. At present, it's the best book in print for appraisers.

5 out of 5 stars For valuation of nonpublic companies - A good read!.......2000-01-31

The valuation profession has exploded among CPAs, CBAs and others who attend a few seminars and then undertake to do this complicated work. Many end up doing a shabby job, because they do not understand basic concepts of cost of capital. The understanding of aspiring business appraisers will grow from reading this book, as (I believe) mine did.

This book is NOT written by an academician (although I think I recall that Shannon has a PhD in finance). A fair example of an academician's work, reflecting a different approach and serving different needs, is Bradford Cornell's fine work on the equity risk premium.

Pratt has authored several classic books on business valuation. He has valued thousands and testified in US Tax Court, state courts and federal courts across the country. He continues to speak to business appraisers across the country. This book summarizes issues he knows need to be better understood by those of us who consult with closely held businesses.

This is a short book and an easy read, but packed with good information for those who want to better understand the cost of capital in the context of valuing small businesses.

1 out of 5 stars 101 Fudge Factors For Those Ignorant of Risk Neutral Pricing.......1999-05-30

This book should be titled "I do not know how to price all risks when valuing companies so here are 101 fudge factor guesses I use instead". This is the wrong way to value companies and is inconsistent with financial asset pricing theory. Look elsewhere for better resources.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-06

I am not exactly sure why this book has never been reviewed. I found it in a public library. It is superb. I am doing a cost of capital project, and I happened to have checked this book out before. I found that it summed up many things from all the finance classes I have taken, including the assumptions that are always used in finance theory. Some people just take it that these assumptions are always correct. Obviously this is not so. I will not go into detail--just buy the book. I will, and this shows how it is really a good idea for an author to send out books to public libraries. I would not have known about this otherwise, and this is the first review of Amazon--which is another good source to find out about unknown books. Sometimes you can find out things from publisher's description on Amazon, but this is all very time-consuming.

4 out of 5 stars The IT Payoff Review.......2007-02-20

Easy to read book. Get's straight to the point. However, the case studies are out of date. A new, updated version is needed!

4 out of 5 stars The IT Payoff: Measuring the Buiness Value of Information Technology Investments.......2006-11-10

Practical methodogy was introduced, it provides specific templates, metrics, and tools for making funding and IT investment decisions. It should be recommended reading for IT executives and managers.

5 out of 5 stars The book is great however . . . . ........2005-05-07

The content appears to be good however I made the mistake of buying the digital e-book version without knowing that there is a form of protection that doesn't permit printing to paper.

The only reason I purchased it in this format was I needed it very quickly (I'm in Australia) for an assignment due this week so I can PRINT the book out, read it now and while travelling to and from work.

What a bloody shame. Amazon - why don't you highlight the above fact at least against all applicable e-books you sell so that the customer knows before he/she splurges any money instead of hiding it in a help or FAQ file. Last time I'll buy an ebook from here or anywhere where I can't print it out.

2 out of 5 stars Great articulation of issues, poor analysis of solutions.......2003-10-30

I have trouble in understanding how this book got such positive reviews. I found it to provide a very eloquent and succinct description of the issues, but nothing very insightful in terms of solution, or recommendations. The model they present is obvious to the point of uselessness, and does not offer any real help in how to evaluate investments more effectively. Specifically what is missing for me is that the authors are still tied to the world where the IT project deliverers take no responsibility for the business (financial) outcome of their work. What I'm looking for is a proposal for model of IT projects that brings the business value into the heart of the project methodology, rather than as a parallel exercise.

In summary the book is painfully academic with fleeting references to a small number of case studies. This is a book that brings nice introduction to the issues for a student, but is of no value to the practitioner. This is an important area and it deserves more.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Work.......2003-07-23

Clearly written, conveys the essence of making IT worthwhile. This book makes be believe in the long term promise of IT.

I particularly like the practical applications and references to successful methods. This book provides well grounded and leading edge, yet practical, methods to improve IT returns.

Overall, this book gives a clear road to increasing the value of the IT investment. Each organization should weigh which aspects to apply in its practices.

The main method is the age-old concept of measure what you want to manage. The book builds extensively on this concept and provides clear direction.

Although the manage by facts and measure, measure, measure themes are common in business thought, the proper application to the issues in corporate IT are insightful.

The pedigree and background of the authors is impressive. Combined with their experience and demonstrated rigour, this gives the book a basis of actionable credibility.

I highly recommend this book to anyone responsible for IT outcomes and return on IT investment.

This volume provides a thorough exposition of the theory relating to the cost of capital--a core subject in academic finance and also of genuine practical importance. Any serious attempt to value a business requires an estimate of its cost of capital. This book explains models and arguments in a way which does justice to this reasoning, while minimizing the prior knowledge of finance and maths expected of the reader. It is intended primarily for students at advanced undergraduate levels.

        Book Description

Should we kill murderers? Do executions deter potential murderers, save money, and inspire respect for the law? Or, is the death penalty cruel and immoral, expensive and discriminatory?
Just Revenge presents a groundbreaking analysis of the complex and contentious issue of capital punishment. Mark Costanzo looks beneath stale, abstract arguments and shines a bright light on the reality of how the death penalty is actually used and what we really accomplish by executing murderers. This eloquent, clear-headed, and insightful book systematically strips away every argument offered up in support of capital punishment. The author ably summarizes evidence about the usefulness of capital punishment and places the practice of killing murderers in historical, political, and moral context. Just Revenge uses diverse sources of information--including trial arguments, murder rates, case histories, economic and demographic data, survey findings, and quotes from defendants, politicians, and the families of victims--to expose the extravagant costs, illusory benefits, and disturbing consequences of the death penalty. No matter how you feel about capital punishment, or even if you're not sure how you feel, this is the book to read.

        3 out of 5 stars Just Revenge.......2007-10-02

This was a good and concise publication in opposition to capital punishment. It presented good arguments from various angles as to why the death penalty should be abolished. It would definitely be a great tool in a college classroom.

        5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2006-04-12

This book clears up a lot of misconceptions about the death penalty. It discusses all the arugments, pro and con. It is well researched and documented to back up its assertions. No matter your view on capital punishment, you should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Deep in the Heart of Texas.......2002-05-16

This book was the most useful tool I have ever encountered for organizing my thoughts and arguments against capital punishment. Even if you don't read the book, this book is worth the cost simply for the extensive bibliography at the end which can further help your personal research. He dispels many myths about the death penalty (cost, deterrance, public opinion) while presenting a strong ethical argument against it as well. Anyone who truly analyzes this compelling evidence cannot help but be swayed to his way of thinking.

        4 out of 5 stars it's ok.......2001-07-19

I think the book is fine and it helped me in my debate. Lotsa details and good information and refutations against the death penalty. I read one review about the person who stood six hours and read it. Even though I'm on his side and am a believer in nothing, his argument is wrong about how Christians are commanded not to kill. Didn't God command the Israelites to kill many people when they went into the "promised land"? The commandment reads Thou shall not murder, not kill as my grandpa explained to me. I think he needs to do more research. But i agree that killing is wrong, be it by state or whatever. 5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2001-07-12

This book helped me out so much with my research paper that I was doing on Capital punishment. I am in 10th grade,pro-life and, believe that everybody can change, even murderers. They don't deserve to die. I'm not a bible believing person or anything, but if the bible is about love, than why do I see so many bible experts supporting the death penalty? God has never commanded anyone to kill...has he? I wish the author would touch on the bible and how it relates to the death penalty more instead of the history of it. I think we should give death row inmates more chances to change their ways. Maybe if we set them free and trust them, than they would change. I would not be afraid of living with Ted Bundy even after he did all those cruel things to girls. The U.S. gov't is dumb in keeping the death penalty. Therefore, if we dd not have the deah penalty system, crime rate would decrease. They need to read this book so their attitudes will change. Killing is wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction with detailed solutions.......1999-04-27

I've watched the words "Shareholder Value" creep into our business vocabulary over the past decade or so, and I've heard many explanations of how to optimize it. Unfortunately, there about as many definitions and techniques for measuring and managing it as there are books on the subject. I've read many of these other texts and worked with the other consultants Mr. Knight mentions in his book. But none of them have approached the precision and clarity of this book. Mr Knight starts with why management should understand the shareholder's needs and the proper methods for addressing those needs, then he takes the reader logically through all the steps (including the subtle nuances) of implementing such a program. There is no more comprehensive nor better written book on this subject on the market. If only Mr. Knight had written his book 10 years ago, many of us would have been saved from endless hours of vague and confusing meetings about what we were really trying to accomplish.

2 out of 5 stars A very basic point of view.......1999-03-10

I expected much more of it. Very basic in it's assesments and definition. I cannot get a real signification of EVA until chapter 6. Good for earliers beginners not awaiting for much academic support

5 out of 5 stars A must read book for companies striving for value creation.......1998-07-14

This book shows how to develop and implement strategies regarding value creation for shareholders. It has a very good mix of theory and business cases. The core aspect of this book is the theory behind the imperative link of: Strategic Planning, Budgeting, Financial Reporting and Incentive Compensation. This theory is tested against many sucessful business cases. The author also shows why some companies fail after incomplete or wrong assumptions on the value based management implementation.
