A good guide from start to finish .......2007-07-24
As a general civil engineer in private practice this book has provided a good overview on the more abstract side of land development including financing, rezoning, and public involvement. All of which, are topics that typical engineers strugle with as it is not the enjoyable aspect of what engineers are trained to do. Nevertheless, these abstract components are just as real as the plans we develop. Of course, the book is excellent for hands on design and calculation support.
Learn a lot.......2007-05-13
As a novice developer, this book put me on the right track without all the confusion and terms I would have never understood. It was simple to understand and after reading it, I felt like I knew a lot more. Very interesting and satisfying. Great reference guide all the way around.
very good all-around reference.......2004-03-01
I primarily work as a structural-architectural engineer and am becoming more and more involved in civil-site work. This handbook is exactly what I was looking for in terms of something that would quickly get me "up to speed" in the fundamentals of civil-site design.
Of course, no single book could (or should) be thought of as a substitute for the experience and mentoring received from seasoned professionals in a design office, but this one has enough technical explanation and details to get you going with confidence.
I choose this one over the Colley book (reviewed both before making purchase) as Land Development Handbook has more of the technical info that engineers would seek.
Difficult to follow!.......2003-12-16
I am in a class at Community College of Baltimore County and we are using this book at this time. Our whole class along with the Professor find this book to be very difficult to follow. The book constantly repeats itself making it extremely boring to read and is not fluent at all. They have examples that reference charts that are 3-5 pages apart from the problem being discussed the formulas you almost have to figure out for yourself how they are used and there are alot of typos.
I recomend burning this book!!!!!!!
A Must Have Pub.......2002-07-04
Ever since I purchased this publication I can't stop using it. Every civil engineer should have this as part of their reference library, regardless of your area of specialty. It provides macro to micro scale explanations of general processes, design applications, etc in a very readable format. More times than I can remember I have looked to this book for an answer or at least for some guidance and was throuroughly satisfied. No it is not a definitive reference for civil engineers but its' breadth and usability overshadows any technical shortcomings. If I had to have just one reference book for my area of practice (general civil), this would be it. Yeah, yeah, the "Standard Handbook for Civil Engineers" is a more definitive reference, but I usually find out what I need in this pub.
ps - Almost everyone of my fellow employees that has used the book has purchased their own, find someone you know who has a copy and check it out for yourself.

Reply to A Blunderous Attempt.......2005-10-25
I haven't read the book, but as a production manager for a publishing company for a number of years, I can only say that it is not the author's responsibility or fault that there were errors. It is the copyeditor's responsibility to make sure that two plus two equal four(even in artwork), and the proofreader's responsibility to make sure there are no misspellings. It's nice if the author can catch them, but they rarely do--that's why we hire copyeditors and proofreaders.
As to metric--don't know. Is the author or the book publisher European? The rest of the world uses metric, although there are some in the U.S. that use metric (CalTrans, for instance). All I can think of is that the editor was pushing a metric book to be the first on the block, or to sell to a bigger European market....
A good book for introduction of Land Development.......2003-12-09
I got this book just one month ago. This book is very good for the introduction of Land Development. As for the units, I think that some engineers don't like S-I Units (especially the engineers in the east coast). But in the future, all the people around the world will use it.
Anyway, we can use this book for the introduction material. There are a lot of regulations and codes waiting for us to read.
A Blunderous Attempt.......2000-09-10
The author makes a poor effort to even proof read her work. Several of the examples of design are filled with mathematical errors that someone with a professional license should not be making. With most of the professionals in the field of land development using English units, the author's insistent use of metric makes her work difficult to examine and even less useful as a design guide.
Book Description
Bargaining for Development is a one-of-a-kind handbook that explores the policy and planning principles behind land development conditions, vested rights, and development/annexation agreements, and provides guidance for the practicing professional, government, and land development communities in evaluating the need for, and the drafting of, land development statutes, ordinances, and agreements.
The handbook's basic premises are two-fold. First, land development and annexation agreements offer an excellent vehicle for government and landowners to provide in detail for land developments. Second, because of the law pertaining to vested rights and land development conditions, the development community needs more assurances concerning the continued viability of their projects and the government community requires more in the way of public facilities than the common law grants to either. Vested rights to proceed with a development, including the multi-stage variety, are not easy to come by under the applicable legal principles. Public facilities not closely tied to a land development project through nexus and proportionality are similarly difficult to legally enforce. A development agreement provides for both.

Ugh. I"m returning this........2001-09-28
After a very shallow description of the types of resorts, and a plea for developers to be more sensitive to the natural environment, the book glosses over the huge planning phase and goes into how to turn a profit once the doors are open. All of the steps in between are dismissed with the understanding that you'll hire various teams of professionals to handle them. But THAT's what I wanted to know!

"Water is vital to social and economic development whilst both arable land and water are scarce. Managing water is highly capital intensive, and capital is also scarce. Simultaneously, there are environmental consequences to any intervention in the water cycle whilst the economy depends on the environment. Therefore, for an integrated catchment, economic analyses must be undertaken on the analysis of the impacts of the proposed scheme upon the catchment as a whole. This book starts with the Dublin declaration for defining sustainable water management and sets out the economic framework needed to support the implementation of its requirements. The book is divided into two parts: the theory and applications. The theory side sets out the nature of choice and decision-making, considering social and policy issues for water and resource management. The applications side provides the tools for the economic evaluation of water needs, the use of economic instruments and cost-benefit analysis. Handbook of Water Economics: principles and practice: Adopts an integrated approach to managing land-water interactions. Includes good practice guidelines for each method along with a comparative summary of the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Illustrates techniques with real applications from projects in Egypt, South Africa, China and the United Kingdom. Includes case studies on water availability, sewerage and wastewater treatment, tradable permits, flooding, and hydrometric data. Incorporates other aspects of water management, including law, sociology, psychology, development studies and market research. Is orientated to practical application. This book is suitable for MSc students taking environmental economics modules in Departments of Environmental Management, Geography and Engineering, and researchers in Hydrology. This book will be a useful resource for professionals and policy makers in water companies, water authorities, NGO's, government agencies a

New Waterscapes: Planning, Building and Designing with Water
ASIN: 1566705622 |
Book Description
Design options and planning procedures must be critically examined to ensure that landscapes are created with sensitivity to water quality and management issues as well as overall ecological integrity. Handbook of Water Sensitive Planning and Design presents the history of water as a design and planning element in landscape architecture and describes new interpretations of water management. This text pushes the frontiers of standard water management in new directions, challenging readers into abandoning the comfortable safety of conducting business-as-usual within narrow disciplinary confines, and instead directing views outward to the exciting and incompletely mapped regions of true interdisciplinary water sensitive planning and design. With contributions from renowned practitioners, Part I provides seventeen chapters addressing the subject of site-specific water sensitive design and Part II presents another seventeen chapters focusing on issues relating to the water sensitive planning of riparian buffers and watersheds. In addition, Professor France has provided a "Response" to accompany each chapter, which succinctly underscores the salient features in more detail and emphasizes cross-linking to other chapters in the book. The "Overview" provides a brief road-map to navigate through the section. Finally, the discussion summaries at the end of each section elaborate on past problems, current challenges, and future directions. Handbook of Water Sensitive Planning and Design puts forward the very best of modern water sensitive planning and design and should be required reading for everyone involved in this dynamic and crucial field.
