Cultural Intelligence: A Guide to Working with People from Other Cultures.......2006-11-10
Timely delivery and in perfect condition.
Too broad a topic..........2006-08-01
The discussion was so broad that it was almost irrelevant. It is not Peterson's fault though. Any discussion about every culture in the world is necessarily broad, but I think I would have gotten more out of the book if it focused on a specific area of the world.
Cultural Intelligence.......2005-03-13
Cultural issues are not a new topic, but this book is so well written that it quickly becomes an interesting read and valuable learning tool for almost all of us, because of the world we live in, now and in the future. The author begins by explaining the importance of cultural intelligence for many of our business and personal interactions (with people from other ethnic groups at home and around the world), then listing what to expect (how the book is organized and why), and finally presenting a wealth of information about the topic (with vivid examples of how to apply it to our daily lives). Those examples are a clear indication that the author has accumulated his knowledge through wide reading, a variety of teaching contexts, and comprehensive practical experience in the field. The book identifies common cross-cultural dilemmas and offers practical solutions by outlining primary principles as a foundation for decision-making and describing how individual differences must be considered. The use of continuums throughout the book, and in the tool The Peterson Cultural Style Indicator, ensures that the reader understands and effectively uses the concept of Gray, versus Black and White, in human relationships. A good summary is the equation presented of Cultural Intelligence: Knowledge about Cultures + Awareness (of self and others) + Specific Skills (behaviors).
Insightful!.......2004-08-04
Imagine a guidebook that helps you navigate the uncharted lands of strange cultures or, at least, cultures that seem strange to you. Author Brooks Peterson is less concerned with social advice than he is with explaining how to manage broad cultural differences and avoid cultural egocentrism. While he soundly reviews measures of cultural differences, such as cultural scales, he avoids delving into complex, abstract theories with little practical application. His clearly written book treats all cultures objectively, covering broad tendencies without venturing into cultural generalities. He alerts you to the nuances of other cultures and your own. We strongly recommend this book to anyone who interacts with the values of other cultures on a regular basis - and, these days, that's just about everybody.

A great job of giving the inside scoop.......2001-05-14
I don't know the author, so this is a real review. She's done a wonderful job helping me to understand and work with the media. This book is easy to read, well written and offers sound advice. I've already gotten my money's worth and I'm only half-way through it. If you're looking for a book on dealing with the media - this is the one to get!
She's Been There. . . Learn From the Expert!.......1999-08-19
What to say, when and how to say it and WHY you need to learn to speak in sound bites! That's it in a nutshell. This book was my bible when I appeared on ABC TV's "The View" with Barbara Walters. I highly recommend it.
This book helped me deal with reporters who ask stupid quest.......1999-03-02
I'm a legal professional who has to answer reporter's questions about sensitive domestic abuse issues. Kathy's book gave me savvy advice and confidence in answering. I especially liked the parts about understanding reporter's pressures. This information made me more understanding.
Excellent, concise and clear........1997-12-10
Kathy Kerchner tells it like it is. Her book is an outstanding collection of information that people who deal with the media need to know. Her tips on what to do, when to do them and how to do them are so full of common sense one wonders, "Why didn't I think of that?"
Book Description
Working with a Transsexual is a short, easy-to-read source of information for people who have a transsexual in their workplace. It conveys a basic understanding of transsexualism and transition and answers questions that coworkers typically ask. The book includes photographs of transsexuals who work in a variety of professions, and it has a resource list for readers who seek further information on this issue.
Customer Reviews:
C'mon, we're better than this........2001-05-24
Walworth's books (now two of them) have the sad tendency to reduce the trans experience to a path of struggle and pain. For lots of us, that's not how it works when we approach the world as active contributors. If a worker is a good worker, well-liked by his/her coworkers, they won't have a problem with the transition. If the worker is so self-indulgent as to demand special consideration (meetings, sensitivity training, books) how can the organization respond positively?
An Excellent Guidance for Successful Transition.......1999-12-03
The second book of Janis Walworth is a complement to her firstbook "Transsexual Workers - An Employer's Guide" regardingtranssexuals in the workplace. To better understand transsexuals, it tells the story of Brian's early childhood, his struggle of being a boy but feeling and identifying as a girl, conflicts with his parents, and socially being pressed into a life which was not his at all. His desperate prayers, his secret life as a "woman", his depressions, his wedding plans that ended in a suicide attempt, his seeking counseling that guided him safely through his transitioning from Brian to Brenda and helped him/her to become a valuable employee.
The book has sample letters addressed to friends and coworkers from Brian/Brenda and his/her manager of the Human Resources Department.
Chapter 2 "About Transsexualism" covers a Human Resource Department organized meeting with Brian/Brenda's coworkers, a psychologist, and a female-to-male transsexual to inform about the complex subject of transsexualism.
Chapter 3 and 4 are question and answer sections that give honest answers to questions that might be asked when dealing with a transitioning coworker (e.g., Do all transsexuals have sex change surgery? What is the difference between transsexuals and transvestites? Do the hormones interfere with a transsexual's ability to do their job? Why doesn't the company just replace Brian?).
Chapter 5 describes the first day of Brian, now as Brenda, at work, her anxiety and courage to finally be who she always was deep inside. Chapter 6 shows a picture gallery of transsexuals, male-to-female and female-to-male. This is an excellent closing to show that transsexuals are "real people" with "real jobs" that deserve to be fully integrated into society.
Thank you, Janis Walworth, for addressing such a complex subject in an easy-to-read language and the resource list that offers help and support on this matter!
Book Description
For every woman who works with men-an immediately empowering guide to rising above gender politics and succeeding in the workplace
Knowledge is a powerful tool. The Male Mind at Work answers troublesome and intriguing questions about how men behave on the job. This thought-provoking book shatters myths about what really goes on in the male mind while confirming for women the realities about gender differences that have always existed. It offers clear strategies for women who feel frustrated and confused because male colleagues speak a different language or play by different rules, and contains valuable truths about the male psyche so that woman can more effectively operate in the workplace.
By looking through this gender lens, a woman will gain a better understanding of the male perspective in order to network with men, manage a difficult male colleague, boss, or subordinate, and compete with confidence. The Male Mind at Work arms women with the power to use this knowledge effectively-without sacrificing their own identities and personal strengths.
Customer Reviews:
some interesting if not earth-shattering observations.......2001-08-13
Though I didn't feel that there was any shocking bit of new information, I did enjoy reading the candid comments of many CEO's regarding their perceptions of women. No surprise that many are intimidated by the very smart women that have risen to their level. I did feel that at times the differences between men and women were exaggerated somewhat, but the author does provide helpful pointers at the end of each chapter that are meant to help the reader put theory into practice. Most interesting is the idea that many top CEOs cite graciousness at the top quality they think makes them a strong leader -- I think men have learned something from women here as women are more likely than men to share the credit. Humility and graciousness go a long way, both in the business world and out. A good read with some useful information.
Gender-Specific and Yet...........2001-01-06
Throughout eight chapters, Swiss suggests how women can "add swagger to their step, put on a game face, balance feminine and masculine traits, maneuver adversity and adversaries, cope with mixed signals and the great gender divide." She also offers reasons men why like working with women, secrets of strong leaders, and concludes with suggestions as to how to open "the gender lens. "Here is a woman's guide to working with men. (It could also serve as a man's guide to working with other men as well as with women.) Based on extensive interviews, Swiss offers some insightful comments and practical suggestions which, in this male's opinion, will help women to improve (or at least clarify) their relationships with men. Of course, not all men think and act alike; nor do all women. We all know abrasive and aggressive women as well as gentle and acquiescent men. Each possesses a unique combination of what are perceived to be masculine and feminine traits. Men and women often approach quite differently a broad range of career issues such as hiring and firing, conveying confidence, facing competition, participating on a team, building business alliances, saying "no" and setting limits, dealing with difficult people and difficult situations, managing and motivating others. Sound familiar? I agree with Swiss that there are certain "valuable truths about the male psyche" which, properly understood, can reduce (if not eliminate) problems many women have with that psyche in action. (Many males do not as yet understand, much less appreciate these "valuable truths.") This book will be valuable for anyone who seeks a better understanding of the male mentality, not only at work but everywhere else.
I really loved this book........2000-10-03
This book is incisive and helpful. As a woman in a male dominated field, I can attest that Swiss' advice is entirely on target. In addition to offering effective ways to succeed, it's also a good read. Very entertaining. If you are a women who wants to work more effectively with male colleagues--read this book.
A wonderful reference for corporate women!.......2000-08-22
This book is a wonderful reference for women who work with men, especially those in the corporate world. I work in corporate finance for a large, international corporation and there are very few women in my world. Reading this book gave me a great deal of insight on how men see work situations differently than women, and, by putting this knowledge to work, I've already improved several relationships. (By the way, I first read this book in a bookstore - spent the afternoon sipping lattes and reading - and am now buying my copy from Amazon.)

Book Description
Doing business internationally requires understanding not only other languages, but even more so the business practices and cultures of other countries. In the case of Brazilians working with Americans, a fundamental difference for all parties to understand is that Brazilian business culture is based on developing personal relationships between business partners, while American businesspeople often prefer to get down to hard "facts and figures" quickly, with fewer personal preliminaries. Negotiating such differences is crucial to creating successful business relationships between the two countries, and this book is designed to help businesspeople do just that.
Brazilians Working With Americans presents ten short case studies that effectively illustrate many of the cultural factors that come into play when North American business professionals work in Brazil. The authors summarize each case and the aspects of culture it involves, and American and Brazilian executives comment on the cultural differences highlighted by that case. A list of topics and questions for discussion also help draw out the lessons of each business situation. To make the book equally useful to Brazilians and Americans (whether businesspeople or language students), the entire text is presented in both English and Portuguese. In addition, Apple QuickTime movies of the executives' comments, which allow viewers to see and hear native speakers of both languages, are available on the Internet at www.laits.utexas.edu/orkelm/casos/intro.html.
