Book Description
Studies show that U.S. companies lose approximately $75 billion annually on failed or mismanaged projects. Avoid the many pitfalls and deliver projects on time, within budget, and of the scope and quality desired by the client, with a highly successful tool called the Statement of Work (SOW).
In Delivering Project Excellence with the Statement of Work, author Michael Martin explains what an SOW is ... how it's developed and used on a project to establish a baseline, develop pricing, and measure changes and profitability ... and how to communicate and sell the importance of the SOW to the client and your own organization.
Included with this book is a bonus CD-ROM with sample SOWs, templates, and forms to help you manage change to the project throughout its life cycle. This is a must-have book for every project leader, manager, team member, or client.
Customer Reviews:
Solid Book !.......2004-11-17
Mr. Martin did a magnificent job explaining what an SOW is and when it should be created. He also explains in detail the creation of an SOW and how it applies to the government and private business sectors. If you are familiar with SOW's you can skip Chapters 1-3 and dive into Chapter 4. I strongly recommend Chapter 5-7.
Chapter 1: Defining the Statement of Work
Historical Perspective on the SOW
Industry Standard Definition of the SOW
Definition of the SOW in the New Economy
Chapter 2: The Importance of the SOW in Managing Projects
Reasons for Having a SOW
Benefits of the SOW
Chapter 3: When to Do an SOW
Consequences of Lack of Guidance for the Private Sector
When an SOW Should Be Done
Types of SOW's and When They Apply
Chapter 4: Who Should Develop the SOW
Building the TIGER Team
Building the Cone of Cohesion
Chapter 5: Building the SOW foundation
Performing Due Diligence
Building the WBS
Chapter 6: Framing the SOW
Developing the SOW Framework
Structure of the Baseline SOW framework
Chapter 7: Finalizing the SOW
Drafting a Quality SOW
Role of the SOW in Pricing the Project
Reviewing the SOW
Role of the SOW in the Contract
Chapter 8: Sample SOW's
(this chapter breaks down the examples included on the CD)
Chapter 9: Managing Change to the SOW
The importance of Managing Change
Identifying When a Change Occurs
Factors to Consider in Managing Changes to the Project
Tools for Managing Change to the Project
Chapter 10: Selling the Importance and Benefits of the SOW
I would have preferred a variety of SOWS on the included CD giving examples of different types of projects. The templates that are included on CD were helpful. I was able to immediately use the template for one of my projects. I was very satisfied with my purchase.

An overview ith the details.......2005-11-10
This book breaks it all down. Time management, budgeting, dealing with staff and technical issues. For those in the field already, its a refresher and a confirmation of what you're doing. For those new to the field, it can serve as an operations manual for guidance. Appendix B that describes the job description is invaluable.
Practical techniques.......2003-05-03
This book has the basic knowlegde tha every CM must know, its easy to read, and it give you a better and required professional overview of construccion projects.
An essential book for project managers.......2001-04-19
Easy and comprehensible step by step guide to project management, very helpful for both experienced and entry level project management engineers
Customer Reviews:
Complete and valuable PM resource.......2004-06-29
Quentin Fleming is best known for his expertise and published works in the earned-value project management domain. However, he is also deeply experienced in procurement management, and has an impressive body of published work in that specialty as well. This book evidences his expertise, and is one of the most succinct guides on the subject I've read.
Among the reasons I like this book are:
- excellent material on teaming arrangements and subcontractor management. These areas can make or break an engagement, ruining the reputation of the prime and/or subcontractors. The approaches and advice provided will get you around the pitfalls.
- the chapter on selecting the proper contract type distills information scattered across sources ranging from FAR to niche books and other publications. Having the strengths and weaknesses of all possible contract approaches in one place is reason enough to get this book in my opinion.
- managing procurement risks is given in-depth treatment. Everyone from contracting officers to project managers to functional area experts will get something from the chapter devoted to the topic. The related chapter on legal aspects of project procurement is another strong point of this book.
The book covers the spectrum of procurement, mainly from the customer's perspective, but ample information is given about provider viewpoints. More importantly, this information is consistent with the PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and the six related processes (procurement planning, solicitation planning and solicitation, source selection, contract administration and closeout).
This is more than a glossed-over summary, or for novices - it contains information that even the most seasoned procurement specialist will find useful, and should be in the reference library of every project manager.
Short and to the Point.......2004-06-14
Roger H. Mandel, an adjunct professor at SDSU & UCSD, March 5, 2004,
Well arranged with a comprehensive description of what is important. Can be used as a short desk guide for those that are just starting to do procurements. Every Project Managers should have one and read for an overall comprehension of what is important in out sourcing. You will not be confused with many details. This professor recommends this book as a start to understanding project procurement management.
Project Procurement Management Primer.......2004-05-05
If you have never seen or managed a procurement process for resources, this book is a good overview of some of the challenges you may face and processes to follow.
However if you have any experience and are looking for a resource to help you build best practices around Project Procurement I would look for another resource that has more depth.

Customer Reviews:
WONDERFUL !!.......2007-10-03
I am running a construction company and my basic mindset is functional business development. I recently purchased this Construction Operations Manual and I am extremely satisfied. The book almost perfectly addresses a wide array of issues, actually, it's phenomenal! It simply is a 'construction operations manual.' I have not read anything that would come close to this book in terms of running a practical construction company.
Furthermore, this is basic business development. In my opinion it is a balanced and structured way of creating and operating any business in general. Whether it be a construction, technology or scuba diving companies, these basic functional principles of running a business will not change. It is a fabulous book.
There is some room for improvement. The cd-rom with forms templates is fairly large and it forms facilitates many issues, however I personally have put together a compilation of templates 4x as large. Therefore, there is a way to create a better manual by adding more forms to the cd-rom.
Overall, i give the Construction Operations Manual two thumbs up, five stars and lots of support.
Just like buying a franchise.......2007-08-16
Most spend thousands in buying a franchise. This book has what you need to build a successful system yourself at much less cost.
Good but could be better.......2003-10-18
Author has huge experience in construction industry, but I expected something like a guideline - simple in structure, focused on essence. Topics are covered with plenty of words, could be simpler. However generally it is worth having this book.
Very good text.......1999-01-21
THe attached diskette did not contain all the forms and letters as so indicated by the author. THe author should verify the diskette before shipping. Other than that I thought the manual prove to be worth the purchase.
Book Description
Only 43 per cent of U.S. construction firms remain in business after four years. Why? Inadequate management, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. This is surprising because most construction firms are formed by ambitious construction project managers, executives and tradesmen who have excelled at what they have been doing. But as experienced as these entrepreneurs may be, they are not likely prepared to take on the full range of responsibilities forced on them in managing the business of construction in its entirety.
While this business failure rate and its causes are based on U.S. experience, available data from a number of other industrialized countries shows they are similar.
This book describes in detail what the business side of the construction equation requires of the construction firm owner. The contractor who quickly learns these requirements can identify and avoid or manage around the pitfalls that cause the high failure rate in our industry and put his or her construction firm on a level playing field with the best-run companies in the business. The detailed duties of the owner, whether in the U.S., U.K., Australia or Canada, are a common theme throughout the book.
The author, Nick Ganaway, speaks peer-to-peer, and the book is sprinkled with supporting examples from his own experience. He is immersed in the industry and this book is "based on the things I've learned, used, and refined as a light-commercial general contractor in the course of starting and operating my own construction firm for 25 years." The contractor doing $5 million or $50 million or more in annual sales or the equivalent amount in other countries, or the entrepreneur who is just starting up, can use the tried and proven material in this book to build a business that is profitable, enjoyable, and enduring.
Additionally, the book devotes a chapter to specializing in chain-store construction.
* Learn what you need to succeed in the construction sector
* How to target, land and retain profitable customers
* Avoid the pitfalls of running your own construction business

A testimony to the principles of this text.......2007-02-08
Upon graduation from Georgia Tech's building construction program in 1982, I went to work for Nick Ganaway. One of the many reasons I selected his company was his obvious knowledge of business. Even more, I appreciated the motivation he placed in us (and himself) to always become better as contractors and as businessmen. We met frequently to "log in" new discoveries, efficiencies, risks, and methods of profitability that he had wisely accumulated for us. As I "ventured out" into the world and developed my own business with very little experience, I quickly noticed that although I was a "great" project manager that running a construction company was an entirely different issue. For example, do you understand the unique requirements of the construction firm owner? Terms in the project owner's construction agreement that can unfairly shift major risk onto your plate and what to do about them? How to ensure that you get paid for change orders? What to do when hard times suddenly strike (and they will)? After 25 years of experience in operating a commercial construction company, Mr. Ganaway explains chapter-by-chapter these and every other risk area you must manage if you are going to survive in construction. I know these explanations well as they ring in my mind from discussions with Mr. Ganaway concerning my very first projects and through calling for help with running my own construction business. You will feel like you're having these same discussions with him as you read this book. Every contractor, project manager, and construction student should read it. Today I use this very text to teach our students at Georgia Tech's building construction program how to run a business, as well as consulting in the same area. His principles work!
An added bonus to this text is the final chapter, where Mr. Ganaway makes the case for specializing in chain store construction. To "outsiders" who have not reviewed this market segment, I think you will be surprised at the benefits. If you are not already specializing in a niche market, this chapter is sure to start you thinking about it.

Important Information for New Contractors.......2007-04-11
If you are a person that is just starting out in the Construction industry, this book can help guide you in the right direction. Many mistakes that I have made in the past 10 years are covered in these pages. I wish I would have had this book back then. It would have made our company grow and prosper without the glitches. I highly recommend this book.

Great Book!.......2007-02-01
This is the first straightforward, down-to-earth book on how to run a construction business that I have come across. A realistic account of what it takes to start an enterprise and what it's like to be a contractor. Anyone contemplating starting their own construction company should read this before attempting it and every contractor already working at it should study Nick's work to learn how to do it better and to realize that they are not alone when they discover just how challenging and difficult the struggle for success can be. Everyone associated with the construction industry should read this book to gain an understanding of how the business really works.

Book Description
The subjects covered in this book include those normally studied in an introductory overview course on construction management, and there is enough depth and added material to serve as the basis for a more advanced course, focusing on organizational and contractual approaches to project management, and the related planning and control systems. This new edition strengthens its coverage of the business aspects of the industry, with a section devoted solely to the business methods in professional construction management. The text's practical in-depth approach to the major engineering and management techniques appeals to both students and practitioners alike.

Worthwhile investment for those in CM or GC.......2005-02-19
I used this book in my CM class as a senior in college. The book is pretty comprehensive and a lot of the info didn't make sense until I actually started in the field of general contracting and construction management. Now the info in the book is understandable. I would recommend the book.
Good for a junior engineer.......2000-05-03
I got the book's info from my college professor. He strongly recommends this book for me as a junior engineer. I found many useful tables and info from book that mostly I also get from job. Mr Barrie is a consulting engineer and he shared his experiences with us, I felt happy what he did. In the Cve field, most of the things are gathered from experiences. It is quite diffirence from the IT or EE field, it need much time to do it. Mr Barrie give us what he did in recent decades, and I hope we will done better.

Book Description
The negotiated contract method for RFPs is a rapidly growing trend in construction. Traditionally, RFPs have gone through a competitive bid method – meaning that 100% of the design work is done without the input of contractors and with very little real cost information. With the negotiated contract method, only about 10% of the design work is done before a contractor is brought to the table, which means less paperwork and lower up-front costs. There are several advantages to the negotiated contract method: • Because only a small part of the design work is done up-front (before a contractor is brought on board), no extensive re-design work has to be done when budget/schedule issues with the design become a factor. • A complete team – architect/designer and contractor – is assembled earlier, making for a much more efficient process and outcome. • The RFP process becomes a collaborative effort, rather than a competitive one. There is no other book on the shelf that either focuses specifically on RFPs in the construction industry, or features a step-by-step method for implementing the negotiated contract method. This is a step-by-step guide for managing the RFP process in a way that saves time, money, enhances team collaboration, and assures quality in construction. Focusing on the negotiated contract method (as opposed to the competitive bid method), the book takes readers from articulating the needs/wish list for a construction project, to the analysis of responses and interviews, through negotiations and finalization of the deal. This is a roadmap for: • Preparing, understanding, and assessing the quality of information in an RFP. • Gathering critical, project-specific information from free and up-to-date local databases. • Adding value to the process by assisting consultants in marketing and project management capabilities. • Selecting and working with a team early in the process to stay on-schedule and on-budget. • Improving the materials selection process and the end-result overall quality of construction. • Example and template forms make it easy to create a successful RFP process.

Well worth the investment!.......2006-03-21
A great guide for obtaining pricing early in the development process. Presented in a straight-forward, concise manner, this book will allow owners, consultants, and project managers to obtain useful pricing information that can be used to underwrite financial analysis and assist in selecting a contractor to work with during the design process. We just used the system on a large mixed use project and had excellent results. The analysis tools and approach allowed us focus in on what was the "real" cost of each contractor proposal, not just the cost per square foot. I highly recommend it!

Book Description
Save BIG BUCK$ on consulting engineering fees! Why pay expensive consulting engineers every time you're faced with changes to residential and light construction plans? Now you can proceed on your own with complete confidence thanks to Basic Engineering Calculations for Contractors, by August DOmel--your one-stop, jargon-free guide to the properties, loads, stresses and tolerances of wood, steel and concrete members. The author's done all the heavy number-crunching for you, so you get instant, ready-to-apply data on: support reactions; bending and shear stresses; deflections; dead and live loads; snow and winds loads; wooden joists, headers and trusses; steel beams and columns; concrete slabs, footings and walls; and much more.
Customer Reviews:
well written and clear information.......2005-09-20
I found the information helpful, easy to use and direct to the point.
Some help, but contains errors, and may be misleading.......2003-05-03
As an engineer it made me nervous to read this book. The author did an ok job at simplifying many of the engineering concepts contained within, but I came across a number of major errors in formulas and definitions. Keep in mind that unless you are a licensed engineer or architect (at least in NY state) it is illegal to design or modify any of the structural members discussed within the book. I believe the author is misleading in implying that complex engineering work can be simplified to the point of bypassing a licensed professional. To me it just seems dangerous. If you are a contractor looking for a better idea behind the engineering of residential construction, the book generally meets that need.
