Supply chain management, both in industry and in academia, has grown rapidly over the past several years mainly due to an increase in corporate goals of reducing manufacturing costs and the savings that come from planning and managing the supply chain effectively. Most textbooks do not include models and decision support systems robust enough for industry. Designing and Managing the Supply Chain: Concepts, Strategies, and Cases, 2/e by Simchi-Levy, Kaminsky and Simchi-Levi discusses the problems, models and concepts derived from issues related to effective supply chain management. This text is suitable for both academic study and practicing professionals. While many core supply chain management issues are interrelated, the authors have tried to make each chapter as self-contained as possible so that the reader can refer directly to chapters covering topics of interest. Each chapter utilizes case studies and numerous examples. Mathematical and technical sections can be skipped without loss of continuity. The accompanying CD-ROM also provides two simulations, the Computerized Beer Game and the Risk Pool Game and a computerized tool, new to this edition, for developing and executing supply chain contracts. These packages help illustrate many of the concepts discussed.

I have this book as my text in the Business program at the University of Phoenix. I am not a supply chain manager and do not aspire to be, but it is a required course. Some of the math is a bit daunting (the phrase "using simple calculus" is an oxymoron to many) but even without knowing calculus the case studies and discussions convey the fundamentals effectively.
Visually, the book is also good, with a layout and graphic design that makes reading easier and not at all a strain on the eyes. That might not seem important when you are shopping for a text, but when you are reading the third chapter of the day sometime between supper and midnight, it will!

This book one of the rarest ocasions in SCM field when you read a book and enjoy its contents to the fullest. I agree with ine of the other reviewers that this is one of the BEST books about SCM. I highly recomend it as one of MUST have SCM books.

The definitive book on supply chain management.......2003-01-17
The 1st edition of this book, authored by three leading scholars and consultants in the important, fast developing field of supply chain management, won several awards and high critical acclaim from professional associations, scholars, and managers.
The 2nd edition has addressed the few gaps in the the original edition, noticed mainly by by those who, like me, used the book to teach university level courses. Thus, in the new edition, anything complex (especially, quantitative ideas) is explained even more clearly and thoroughly than in the 1st edition. The managerial implications of research findings are spelled out even better, with more examples. Short, insightful discussion questions have been added following each chapter, and there are several new, interesting case studies in several chapters. Valuable new material has also been added, e.g., research findings and examples on how to design win-win supply chain contracts, and up-to-date material on the impact of e-commerce and information technology on supply chain management.
This book will be of value to all managers, but probably most to managers at middle and senior levels, as it provides a clear, coherent view of the entire subject while emphasizing strategic and tactical level decisions and planning. The authors have made a truly important contribution to the understanding and practice of supply chain management.

While Gerald & Co's book may look like a good introduction to Oracle's manufacturing & supply chain management modules, it will make little sense to those who have never used the system or don't have access to it. Because I had three years of hands-on experience with Oracle's E-Business Suite, the book is useful and I'm giving it a 3-star rating.
Things that Gerald & Co. could have done better: more illustrations of what they write about. There are many "bells and whistles" in the software, but the book doesn't have enough "screen shots" to show you where they're located on an Oracle "form." I'm not satisfied with the case study, which they have placed in chapter 22. There are no screen shots there either.
Gerald & Co. are assuming you can navigate and know a lot of the Oracle lingo. If you are new to this, don't expect to learn it from this book. The audiences for the book are intermediate and advanced users.
One could also regard this as a reference book. Use it to answer problems you encounter while using the product or better understand what's going on. In this context, I'd rate it 3 stars, too.

Excellent Oracle reference tool.......2005-10-17
I was part of the Oracle implementation team at our company, and I have found this book to be a useful tool for myself in the year since implementation as we continue to explore new functionalities. It is also a useful tool for the application users to learn how Oracle works. In fact, I not only purchased this book for myself, but I have purchased copies for several other people in the company. I refer to it all the time.

This book is very useful for the beginners as well those who want to brush up their knowledge on oracle applications release 11i.
Mostly it covers all Manufacturing & Distribution modules. Financial modules are not covered in this book. I was planning to buy a book and searching for it and finally ended up in buying a very useful book.
Main drawback is not much of screen captures displayed. So if you want to better understand you have to read it by sitting in front of applications screen and switching the forms as you read.
Overall the book is worth having it.

I am the Corporate Lean Champion for a global manufacturing company. I had heard of the bullwhip effect but did not thoroughly understand it before reading "the book" as I refer to it when recommending it to my Lean students. Streamlined helped me to put a plan together utilizing rate based planning, Lean variation reduction tools, and pull protocols to Crack the Bullwhip effect and drive it out of our organization!
Streamlined is a "must read" for any Lean practitioner, operations Leader, supply chain leader ot MBA student.

I actually got the opportunity to study under Srini and can verify his expertise in this field. I picked up more than a few great ideas in this book that I hadn't seen in the many books I have read on the subject. I would recommend this book to students, managers, and specialist at all experience levels.
Excellent textbook for an advanced undergarduate course as well as MBA courses.......2005-06-28
I have adopted "streamlined" for an advanced topics in management course on lean supply chains. The challenge of finding a book that goes beyond the abstract concepts to more detailed and parctical steps for implementation has been greatly alleviated by "streamlined." Dr. Srinivasan provides the reader and the student in particular with a very well thought out and written text. My students' initial worries about the rigor and difficulty of the subject matter were quickly mitigated after reading the first few chapters.
The 14 principles provided me, the professor, an organizing framework for the delivery of the course, the assignments and the term project. The students and myself found "streamlined" to be very interesting, thought proviking, and useful.
This book is a must-read for any faculty member regardless of their discipline as the topics covered cut across all functional areas of business and provide a much-needed integrative approach.

Fourth Edition Selected for Graduate Course.......2002-03-12
I reviewed six different texts in preparing for a graduate level course in International Logistics at Baruch College before deciding on Stock and Lambert's Fourth Edition. This text combines currency, and breadth and depth in a way that is most relevant to the manner in which I wish to conduct the class. It provides a useful and usable reference to the students after the course is completed. Furthermore, the related web site has been very helpful in utilizing this text. I will complement the text for certain modules (i.e., E-Commerce, Culture Change, Logistics as a Career). One always needs, no matter who the author, to provide relevant current material from other sources. A big thanks goes to Stock and Lambert for this text.
Excellent Logistics Textbook.......2002-02-13
I have used this book as the primary text for my Supply Chain Management class at the College of New Jersey. My students are Junior and Senior undergraduate level students in the School of Business. The book provided excellent coverage of all major aspects of the logistics discipline.
I believe that the book would also be appropriate at the graduate school level. There are excellent case studies that can be expanded into worthwhile class discussions or projects.
The supplemental material for instructors is very helpful in preparing for lectures.
Useful concepts, but outdated in nature.......2000-07-30
I used this textbook for a recent college course. I was very disappointed because the book was published in 1992 when the computer was a novel concept "for the future of logistics management". If you can get by this "minor" point, there are other good points to be learned in warehousing and inventory managment that are useful. In short: A good reference book.

This is not so much a text book for students, but rather a cook book for consultants. I found it boring to read and very superficial. But, as a reference guide in your professional carrier, it is probably quite useful.

This book focusses on each and every aspect of Logistics management starting from generating an order for a product/commodity right through the manufacturing process, waehousing, inventory management, transportation and customer service. It goes into a little more detail when it comes to inventory management incorporating some basic mathematics and algorithms. It explains each and every step of the logistics "supply chain" process with great detail and finesse. This book can almost (not entirely) replace a swag of other logistics books within its genre. A perfect text for any logistics/industrial engineering curriculum.

Excellent Handbook for Dynamics AX.......2007-09-05
This is a must have book for any company or consultant wishing to use Dynamics AX to control their supply chain.
This will not teach you everything about Dynamics AX. It will supplement and expand the theory gain from existing training material. This will help you turn the theory into a practical ERP solution.
Just My Thoughts.......2007-07-08
My thoughts are:
1. The book provides a great introduction to how ERP systems work from a Supply Chain perspective. That said, much of the content is generalized and could apply to any respectable ERP.
2. The style is good - written for non-technical folk. So, this is fine from a general user standpoint but nowhere near the depth required for a serious, experienced developer.
3. The one thing I found seriously lacking was sufficient screenshots. One of the great strenghts of AX is the user-friendliness of the GUI and the ease of navigation. This is well described but pictures would be better.
4. The focus is clearly on supply chain aspects. This is fine - but - this precludes addressing other fundamental modules such as Financials. I feel to get a clear picture the reader really needs to understand the connection between an operational transactions and (say) the General Ledger. To be fair - the focus was stated up front by the author.
5. I must admit, that I did not get a good feel for the underlying business processes in play within AX. However, the descriptions of some of the key principles were good e.g. item dimensions.
6. Overall, the book does what it sets out to do but having played with AX 4.0 I really feel that the book does not do it justice. Having used or evaluated about 20 ERP systems, AX 4.0 provides outstanding value for such a sophisticated and elegantly architectured product.
Anyway - there you go.

Great book.......2007-04-17
This is a great book. It is very well written and meets the objectives of three different groups - prospective users, current users, and consultants - so they can derive great value.
I have done lot of training in Dynamics Ax and often times I find users finding it difficult to come to terms with some of the fundamental concepts. This book does a great job of thoroughly explaining some of the most difficult concepts with right level of content.
Another area that I found could be beneficial was the case studies. They allow a reader to picture the material just read in a real life situation which goes a step further than most books or product help.
Overall a great book and a handy reference.

This is one in a series of several dozen volumes that comprise the Harvard Business Review Paperback Series. Each offers direct, convenient, and inexpensive access to the best thinking ("ideas with impact") about the given subject in articles originally published by the Harvard Business School Review. I strongly recommend all of the volumes in the series. The individual titles are listed at this Web site: www.hbsp.harvard.edu. I also want to include a brief portion of Joan Magretta's interview of Victor Fung. He later develops many of his thoughts in greater depth in a book, Competing in a Flat World, co-authored with Yoram (Jerry) Wind. Fung is Group Chairman of Li & Fung, Hong Kong's largest export trading company.
Magretta: "Can you give me an example of how you reach into the supply chain to shorten the buying cycle?"
Fung: "We come in and look at the whole supply chain. We know the Limited is going to order 100,000 garments, but we don't know the style or colors yet. The buyer will tell us that five weeks before delivery. The trust between us and our supply network means that we can reserve undyed yarn from the yarn supplier. Of course, before managing a value chain, it is first necessary to design and then establish one that is most appropriate to the given organization. For cutting-edge thinking on that, I highly recommend Enterprise Architecture as Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson as well as Dean R. Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement: Rethinking the Way We Measure And Drive Organizational Success and Richard Ogle's Smart World: Breakthrough Creativity and the New Science of Ideas.

I have a degree in Supply Chain Mgmt and I now work as a Supply Chain Consultant for a company in Atlanta. I picked up this book for useful tips and strategy and I was dissapointed with its contents. Its full of professor-speak BS, all the buzzwords and hip MBA slogans, but its short on anything that's practical. I would have enjoyed this book if were still a wet-behind-the-ears undergrad, real world experience makes cute catchprases and lofty anecdotes irrelevant.

Once again, HBR has produced an accessible book that highlights the forefront of ideas of the value chain. The best part of books in this series is that you don't have to commit to reading the whole book at one time. You can pick up the book when you have time and read a whole case and feel like you are still able to add to you strategy knowledge.

Excellent cases.If you are an operations professional, you'll study, learn and live by whats discussed here. There are a couple of examples that seem dated here, but that is to get the fundamentals right and I dont complain! I am a believer in HBR and this one again goes on to prove why.
