Book Description
Enterprise risk management is a complex yet critical issue that all companies must deal with as they head into the twenty-first century. It empowers you to balance risks with rewards as well as people with processes. But to master the numerous aspects of enterprise risk management, you must first realize that this approach is not only driven by sound theory but also by sound practice. No one knows this better than risk management expert James Lam. In Enterprise Risk Management: From Incentives to Controls, Lam distills twenty years' worth of experience in this field to give you a clear understanding of both the art and science of enterprise risk management.
Organized into four comprehensive sections, Enterprise Risk Management offers in-depth insights, practical advice, and real world case studies that explore every aspect of this important field.
- Section I: Risk Management in Context lays a solid foundation for understanding the role of enterprise risk management in today’s business environment.
- Section II: The Enterprise Risk Management Framework offers an executive education on the business rationale for integrating risk management processes.
- Section III: Risk Management Applications discusses the applications of risk management in two dimensions–functions and industries.
- Section IV: A Look to the Future rounds out this comprehensive discussion of enterprise risk management by examining emerging topics in risk management with respect to people and technology.

Customer Reviews:
Great for the novice Risk Manager.......2006-07-27
If you are a budding Risk Manager/ Officer or are considering a career move towards Risk Management, this book is a good high-level illustration of what the major sleeves of Risk Management has to offer.
For the experienced risk professional, this is a bit too fundamental.
This book is a must read for all mid-level and executive level managers.......2005-09-21
James Lam has written a remarkably clear and relevant portrayal of how [enterprise] risk management can be used to deliver real value in any business.
During the past year, I developed a course for the Executive MBA program at Villanova University. After reviewing several books on the subject, I chose this one because of its clear and comprehensive coverage of the subject matter.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a serious interest in understanding risk management from a holistic perspective. This includes risk professionals as well as those involved in line and staff functions.
Remarkably Succinct Coverage of a Hot New Topic.......2005-02-04
You bought Jorion, Pearson, and Hull; you slammed headfirst into the quantitative quagmire of risk management, and you may even have passed the Financial Risk Manager exam, sponsored by the Global Association of Risk Professionals, but are you prepared to become your company's "Risk Champion?" Can you explain to laymen why loss distributions are not normal? Can you illustrate the "sweet spot" in the profit/risk tradeoff? If you aren't quite there yet, pick up James Lam's new book, Enterprise Risk Management, From Incentives to Controls. It's a book you can read on the five hour flight from New York to Los Angeles, and its melodies will linger in your memory. This book has changed the way I communicate with people both in and outside the risk management profession. Read it with a highlighter in your hand, and keep the book within easy reach.
A well written and thought out book on Risk Management.......2004-10-05
This book provides practical and insightful look at risk management and how it can benefit companies. Reading and understanding this book should be a pre-requisite for any person going to take on management position.
A Must Read for Risk Management.......2004-08-23
This book is not only about the theory of enterprise risk management, but also a summary of the author¡¯s experience in practicing risk management for more than twenty years. And what is more, there are several case studies that are deeply analyzed in the book. It is because of this that I think it is an excellent work on enterprise risk management. In addition, it is interesting that the Balance of the Yin and Yang in the Chinese traditional philosophy is applied as Lesson 7 by the author. It is a must read for all business managers and students who want to pursue a career in risk management.

High Quality Book.......2006-08-06
In a highly competitive operating environment in which we live, it is often difficult for a company to raise prices, unless it can differentiate its products and services in such a way that customers are prepared to pay a premium price. Even then it is necessary to produce the best value at optimal costs.
Most companies are price takers and the only area that they have control may be their costs. This is where this book is very handy and it provides managers with effective techniques and tools that they can employ to control and manage costs. The book shows that all departments can adopt best practices to ensure that their costs structures are optimal. Other areas to target for cost control include outsourcing, rightsizing organisations, the use of consultants and elsewhere.
This is an excellent book that is essential reading for all managers who need to learn the techniques, strategies and best practices in reducing costs for organisations. The author reinforces their well presented arguments, proposals and solutions with case studies and real examples that should assist managers in implementing the tips that they would have learnt.

Book Description
As a corporate manager or executive, you probably have little contact with the actual day-to-day trading of derivatives contracts. Regardless, your oversight responsibilities place your career directly in the hands of aggressive derivatives traders. Do you really know what they're up to? DERIVATIVES is the first and only book written for the manager who is not a derivatives expert but is responsible for the experts. Concise, uncomplicated, and often entertaining, it gives you a basic understanding and appreciation for these complex yet powerful financial tools. DERIVATIVES isn't another "how to trade" book. Instead, it eschews technical jargon and mathematical formulae to show you "how to survive" when derivatives inevitably cross your professional path. Real life examples of derivatives disasters (Proctor & Gamble's 1994 loss of $102 million, Barings Bank's 1995 loss of $1.3 billion, and the Belgian government's 1997 loss of $1.2 billion) are accompanied by analyses of where they went wrong. Far from the daredevil, all-or-nothing reputation they are often given, derivatives are basically conservative hedging instruments designed to REDUCE risk. They allow organizations to pass the assumption of natural risks to speculators (who intend to profit from those risks). From simple agricultural futures to the latest versions of credit derivatives and swaps, DERIVATIVES will give you a basic appreciation of how derivatives operate and where the dangers lie. Look to this comprehensive yet easy-to-read overview for valuable information on: How to instinctively recognize different types of risk, and choose the instruments which best counteract each; Examination of the legal environment for derivatives, and how to protect your firm from potential liabilities; Strategies to structure your firm's checks and balances to keep pace with the changing structure of the derivatives business. While it may be the quants and traders who make the costly errors, it is the managers and executives who ultimately answer to the authoritiesÑnot to mention their stockholders. DERIVATIVES will help you safeguard your company from undue risk, provide you with a new level of comfort and understanding regarding these vibrant and valuable risk protection tools, and help ensure that your companyÑand careerÑwon't be the next cautionary tale splashed across financial pages worldwide. Derivatives can be both beneficial and devastating. DonÕt let yourself get burned! Derivatives will give you a step-by-step tour through the amazing benefits of derivativesÑas well as an overview of their hazardsÑand put you firmly in control of your corporation's risk control program.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book! Very lucid, and very comprehensive!.......2001-07-23
This is a superb book, get it if you are interested in the world of derivatives. As the title suggests, however, this is a *managerial* intro to the world of the world's "most powerful financial intruments" and will be excellent introduction for MBA students. COntains some excellent examples from this world as well (great to know this if you are going to interview).
If you want something a lot more numerical and yet friendly, I'd suggest "The Complete Guide to Option Pricing Formulas by Espen Gaarder Haug" to go alongside this book - thats a classic as well. If you want to see the Black-Scholes model in operation, check out http://erudition.com/derivatives/. Good luck.

Good information thats hard to find........2000-09-25
Hospital and physician payment systems are very important today and its importance is increasing every day. Using DRG and other methods of connecting payment with services is a must in the healthcare system in a new millenium. The book is focused on the United States and gives good examples of the developement of payment systems in various states. It's a little outdated today and it's quite expensive but overall a very useful insight into the use of DRG and payment systems in USA in real practice.

Book Description
Responding to a critical need in government for ways to manage costs better and improve productivity, The author gives practitioners and advanced students of public administration not just the statistical methods they require but also the hands-on skills they need and will use daily. His book introduces cost and management accounting, shows how to use decision-making tools in solid problem-solving situations, and lays out measures to help manage an organization's productivity. Also covered are such topics as cost estimation, benefit-cost analysis, simulation, inventory analysis, network modeling, mathematical programming, game theory, and more. The result is a readable and focused resource that facilitates the reader's grasp of two of the most critical elements in the successful operation of any organization: cost and optimization. The book is organized in three parts. Part I deals with costs in government and emphasizes cost behavior, cost analysis, and cost accounting. Part II treats basic optimization techniques that are useful in cost management. Included are classical optimization, network analysis, mathematical programming, and games and decisions. In Part III the author deals with special cases in cost and optimization, particularly multivariate analysis, productivity management, and some related topics in general management. The book succeeds in presenting these complex issues clearly and in an accessible manner, and adds examples from public sector experience which will resonate with practitioners and students alike.
