Customer Reviews:
Best of breed.......2006-01-23
My first acquaintance with Mr. Long's work was his article "Logistics of Famine" which I found unique for its down-to-earth treatment of a topic rarely recognized as important at the time it was written, delivered in his now-familiar user-friendly style. The man knows and loves his subject, and the care he has taken with this book to clearly explain and illustrate the many aspects of global supply chain management shows that.
Great Textbook !.......2004-04-01
This book is one of the best textbooks I have ever read. All concepts are very well explained. Unlike other textbooks, "International Logistics" provides so many examples that the material becomes easy to understand. The writer's extensive world traveling is portayed in most of the chapters.I highly recommend it to anybody who is interested in the field.
A Word From The Author.......2004-02-13
I would like to take this opportunity to thank reviewers for any comments and suggestions, which have been the source of countless improvements to this book and the overall project.
The manuscript was not edited prior to publication. I don't know why, but this is Kluwer's policy. The good news is that it is the #1 book in its field, and sold out in 4 months, so the second printing afforded the chance to fix most of the typos. This is my first book, written while in a doctoral program, teaching, and researching/travelling, so your patience is appreciated.
Besides being #1 in English, it is also one of the most widely translated business books ever. It is being published in 12+ overseas editions which are translated and edited for that region. If you speak another language and are interested in logistics elsewhere, you may want to check these out. Douglas Long
Frequent errors mar first print editions.......2004-02-08
Frequent typographical errors and fundamental gramatical mistakes in the first printing (due to the publisher's failure to edit the manuscript, according to the author) distracted this reader from the book's content at all times. Be sure you receive the second printing. As of February 2004, Amazon was still selling what I assume is the first printing.

Book Description
Over the past two decades, not only has supply chain analysis become a strategic focus of leading firms, it has also spawned an impressive array of research that brings together diverse research communities. Adding to this diversity and intellectual energy is the emergence of E-Business. E-Business creates new competitive dimensions that are fast-paced, ever-changing, and risk-prone, dimensions where innovation, speed, and technological savvy often define success. Most importantly, E-Business challenges the premises and expands the scope of supply chain analysis. The
Handbook is a comprehensive research reference that is essential for anyone interested in conducting research in supply chain. Unique features include:
-A focus on the intersection of quantitative supply chain analysis and E-Business,
-Unlike other edited volumes in the supply chain area, this is a handbook rather than a collection of research papers. Each chapter was written by one or more leading researchers in the area. These authors were invited on the basis of their scholarly expertise and unique insights in a particular sub-area,
-As much attention is given to looking back as to looking forward. Most chapters discuss at length future research needs and research directions from both theoretical and practical perspectives,
-Most chapters describe in detail the quantitative models used for analysis and the theoretical underpinnings; many examples and case studies are provided to demonstrate how the models and the theoretical insights are relevant to real situations,
-Coverage of most state-of-the-art business practices in supply chain management.
Audience: This volume is suitable for researchers, faculty, graduate students, and practitioners in the following areas: supply chain management, operations research, management science, decision science, industrial engineering, operations management, civil engineering/transportation, logistics management, risk management, applied mathematics, economics, computer science, industrial management, and other related areas.

Book Description
The rapidly developing new economies in China, India, Hungary, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, etc., are at the crossroads of almost all major supply chains. In fact, these emerging economies are in fact growing faster than the established industrial economies of the world. However, given the physical, social and cultural characteristics of the emerging economies, managing supply chains there could be even more challenging than in developed economies. How can we manage supply chains well in emerging economies, coordinate information flows with multiple partners, tackle challenges such as unexpected disruptions, diversify the risks and increase flexibilities, be efficient but at the same time contribute to the social and environmental developments of these economies, and use supply chain concepts and practices to improve the economic welfare of these countries, such as basic infrastructure developments and disaster relief, are the topics and issues of the book.
Building Supply-Chain Excellence in Emerging Economies provides some insights on the answers to the above questions and will enable practitioners to gain insights on the developments, challenges and opportunities when operating supply chains in emerging economies. Innovative approaches are outlined and illustrated with examples of real-world experiences by progressive companies and thought leaders. We also hope that this collection will stimulate researchers to gain deeper understanding and develop methods in operating supply chains in emerging economies.
We have organized the book in three key sections. Global Supply Chain: General Strategies and Framework develops the overall framework in managing global supply chains and developing strategies. Supply Chain Management in Emerging Economies: Challenges and Opportunities describes the challenges and opportunities in supply chain management of emerging economies – the infrastructure constraints, the logistics inefficiencies, and limitations in service operations; and discusses how to create opportunities in such adverse conditions. Building Supply Chain Excellence: Innovations and Success Cases is devoted to a number of industrial cases that showcase innovative approaches to gain excellence, and share insights and lessons from such experiences.

Numerous industries have recognized the importance of efficient supply chain integration, and, as a result, supply chain management has become a standard part of business practice.
The Practice of Supply Chain Management: Where Theory and Application Converge is a must-have volume for users of supply chain management methods, supply chain management researchers, and students in supply chain management. The objective of the book is to provide an overview of this important practice-research cycle, and it is organized into three sections: Core Concepts and Practices; Emerging Supply Chain Practices; and Supply Chain in Action. The focus of the book is on supply chain practice, but supply chain practice that has been heavily influenced by supply chain research. It is this synergy between research and practice that continues to simulate new directions for research.
Customer Reviews:
Leading Edge Supply Chain.......2006-03-02
After training under Hau Lee at Stanford's Global Supply Chain Management forum, I picked up a copy of this book as further reading. This is an excellent compilation of papers written by a veritable "who's who" list of leading supply chain authors such as David Simch-Levi, Hau Lee, Warren Haussman and Seungjin Whang to name just a few.
The book takes you from core concepts and emerging practices through to the state-of-the-art in supply chain design and operation including e-commerce and web-enabled collaboration and reinforces the concepts presented with case studies and examples. Highly recommended to the strategist, manager and practitioner with an already strong background in the basics of supply chain operations.

Book Description
Quantitative models and computer-based tools are essential for making decisions in today's business environment. These tools are of particular importance in the rapidly growing area of supply chain management. This volume is a unified effort to provide a systematic summary of the large variety of new issues being considered, the new set of models being developed, the new techniques for analysis, and the computational methods that have become available recently. The volume's objective is to provide a self-contained, sophisticated research summary - a snapshot at this point of time - in the area of
Quantitative Models for Supply Chain Management. While there are some multi-disciplinary aspects of supply chain management not covered here, the Editors and their contributors have captured many important developments in this rapidly expanding field.
The 26 chapters can be divided into six categories.
- Basic Concepts and Technical Material (Chapters 1-6). The chapters in this category focus on introducing basic concepts, providing mathematical background and validating algorithmic tools to solve operational problems in supply chains.
- Supply Contracts (Chapters 7-10). In this category, the primary focus is on design and evaluation of supply contracts between independent agents in the supply chain.
- Value of Information (Chapters 11-13). The chapters in this category explicitly model the effect of information on decision-making and on supply chain performance.
- Managing Product Variety (Chapters 16-19). The chapters in this category analyze the effects of product variety and the different strategies to manage it.
- International Operations (Chapters 20-22). The three chapters in this category provide an overview of research in the emerging area of International Operations.
- Conceptual Issues and New Challenges (Chapters 23-27). These chapters outline a variety of frameworks that can be explored and used in future research efforts.
This volume can serve as a graduate text, as a reference for researchers and as a guide for further development of this field.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent look at trends in SCM at a price.......2002-06-27
I perused this book- essentially a collection of articles/research papers by the authors that they have elaborated on. The purpose of the book (as presented by the editors) is to look at some of the current research areas in SCM. There are some outstanding chapters and topics in here for those interested in SC research on the Quantitative side. However, this is NOT a qualitative, business oriented book and so certain amount of OR knowledge is required. In fact some of the content is fairly advanced and mathematical and makes casual reading impossible. Serious readers will find much in the book though. My only gripe is the cost- I feel that it's ridiculously high for the type of audience it's intended for - primarily academia. Definitely worth it if you are into research or can afford it.
Classic, Reference, Research on SCM.......2001-04-19
This is a very expensive book and I don't have for the price-reason. However, I read it cover-to-cover and I found this book is not expensive for its price at all. As you can see from book details, six parts of this book are serious issues of Supply Chain Mamangement (SCM). The first uniqueness of this book is the combination of all six major issues in a single "thick" book. Part 1, basic concept, not only give you the basic idea and definition, but the foundation to understand other related issues of SCM. Part 2, Supply contract, is another uniqueness, since not many books talk about. The value information (part 3) is the bullwhip effect, which you can find in several journals. However, this book talks about the way to reduce the bullwhip effect as well as variation of information. The forth part is the weakest of this book (in my opinion) since it doesn't pay more attention on multi-commodity impact on other areas (which I believe it's very important). Part 5 is quite obsolate (the second weakness), but still great for reference or the first story if you are new to globalization of SCM. The sixth part is the real-meat, particulary Chapter 27. Chapter 27 compiles over 100 literatures in SCM. Over 100 papers are categorized and shown concept/methodology. I found it's very useful for literature reviews or SCM research. Chapter 27 traces back to the first journal before the "name" of SCM was coined. Chapter 23 is another meat of this book, written by Shapiro. The integration of strategics, tactical and operation are well descibed. Shapiro extended the work in this book to his book. This is one of the milestone book in this century.
Simply outstanding.......1999-09-03
If you are into Operations Research / Management Science modeling - this is a must. The most up-to-date and comprehensive source of the supply-chain theory.

Book Description
The Wassermann Philosophy describes the simple way in which industrial enterprises can achieve considerably greater profits within a few short months. Supply Chain Management achieves a consistently more profitable and faster-reacting organization. More than 95% of the working time in the organization is expended on inventory and customer orders laid up waiting for further processing or shipping. You can imagine the profits that are devoured by the bottlenecks, together with the misplanning which they cause, and the surpluses that occur day after day in your organization. The bottlenecks have to be eliminated! How this can be done successfully is described in this book. To date this path has been followed by more than 60 companies.
