Book Description
Inventory accuracy starts with an understanding of the conditions under which errors occur and ends with error-resistant processes, intelligent use of technology, a well-trained and highly motivated workforce, and an ongoing process of continuous improvement. In between, there's cycle counting, root cause analysis, process evaluation, user interface design, procedures, employee training, accountability, control methods, process checks, audits, exception reporting, transaction techniques, measurement, counting methods, bar codes, RF systems, speech-based technology, light systems, and software.
Inventory Accuracy: People, Processes, & Technology covers all of these topics and more in a comprehensive treatment of the subject of inventory accuracy in distribution, fulfillment, and manufacturing environments. In addition to documenting the standard tools and techniques used to achieve accuracy, the author provides insights as to why many of the standard solutions don't provide the best results and offers alternative methods. The focus on practical solutions that take into account the sometimes-conflicting priorities that affect accuracy, results in an approach that not only looks good on paper, but more importantly, works in the real world.

A very, very basic book...there has to be better.......2007-05-28
This book is very basic and appears to be very dated. Several times I had to look at the copyright date to ensure it wasn't that hold. With a copyright date of 2003, I thought it would contain more up-to-date information. If you want very, very basic information, than buy this book. If you are already in warehouse distribution, this book will not help you at all. The advice that is given is so basic and not very helpful.
Inventory Accuracy 101.......2007-01-23
Book is written using easy to understand terminolgy. Glossary was invaluable tool.
Piasecki is the Man.......2007-01-04
David Piasecki is a very knowledgable fellow. But more importantly, he has the ability to communicate like an average Joe, not some academic.
This book is easy to read, and has lots of funny cartoons anyone dealing with warehousing or inventory can appreciate.
As far as actual content, Piasecki discusses what works, what works better, and the reasoning behind all of this. His many years of experience clearly shine through in this read.
Check out his website too, it has alot of useful information that compliments the book.
Inventory Accuracy in action.......2006-09-21
As a cost analyst for a mid-sized manufacturer, I found this book invaluable for setting up analyses of cycle counts, and it was THE guide for putting together a full physical count process when our parent company demanded it. It's a pleasure to read (yes, this, a book on managing inventory, is a PLEASURE to read!); Piasecki's take on what a physical count is REALLY like is priceless. He really has a complete grasp of what it means to have human beings managing inventory. See his chapter on what machines and humans each do best.
Takes a dfficult subject and make it easy to understand..........2005-10-05
Fantastic and essential resource for those wishing to understand and implement inventory accuracy and cycle counting in their business practices.

Well worth the money........2006-05-21
I own the 4th edition. I had to make a comment after amazon recommended the 5th.
This is a great book. Originally, i was PO'ed at the price. Especially when you get it and its quite thin compared to many texts. I had to get it for APICS.
Once you start reading it you find it cuts through all waste. This is not a padded book. It explains concepts in a brief, direct manner. Most importantly it communicates clearly. Its like a well written executive summary of the field of materials management. There is enough detail for practitioners.
I have almost all texts in the recommended reading of APICS. This is probably my favorite. The utility you will get per unit of time reading this is huge.
Basic Supply Chain.......2006-03-14
This book has an easy written language and is very good for beginners in the Supply Chain Management Area.
Best book to understand manufacturing process.......2006-02-01
This is one of the best books I have come across which explains the basics of Manufacturing.
A good textbook.......2005-11-17
This book covers the basics of material management and goes into some quantitative detail as well. It is very well written and its lucid style is perfect for a beginner to get a grasp on the subject.
The author clearly and logically explains the concepts of production planning, master production schedule, MRP, Production and activity control, purchasing, inventory management, forcasting, demand planning and much more.
The book also has an abundance of examples and exercises for the student to work through. It makes a good read as a beginner's textbook - but it is probably not very useful as a practical guide for the experienced professional.
Introduction to Materials Management (5th Edition) by J.R. Tony Arnorld (hardcover).......2005-09-04
I was surprised that I got the book was kind of old and not a hardcover as I saw online.
Book Description
This book brings together the strategic role of the supply chain, key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and the underlying tools and techniques for supply chain analysis. Students are able to articulate the strategic importance of supply chain thinking and support their ideas with evidence that can be built using models.

A Brilliant Analysis of Three "Key" Interrelationships.......2007-08-08
As Sunil Chopra and Peter Meindl explain in their Preface, the purpose of their book is to help those who read it to "develop an understanding of the following key areas and their interrelationships: the strategic role of a supply chain, the key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and [the] analytical methodologies for supply chain analysis." I think their material will be of greatest interest and value to executives who are now centrally involved in management of larger organizations' supply chains. However, I think their book will also be of substantial benefit to others who are directly or indirectly involved as strategic allies in those supply chains, those who can also help to ensure effective management of them.
Chopra and Meindl carefully organize their material as follows:
Part I: Building a Strategic Framework to Analyze Supply Chains
Part II: Designing the Supply Chain Network
Part III: Planning Demand and Supply in a Supply Chain
Part IV: Planning and Managing Inventories in a Supply Chain
Part V: Designing and Planning Transportation Networks
Part VI: Managing Cross-Functional Drivers in a Supply Chain
I was especially interested in the final part because one of the greatest challenges when establishing and then sustaining an effective supply chain is to take into full account the need to get all participants in proper alignment, especially when cross-functional resources to achieve to achieve mutually-beneficial results. In Part VI, Chopra and Meindl respond to questions such as these:
1. What is the role of sourcing?
2. How to achieve design collaboration?
3. What are the most important "drivers" of pricing and revenue management?
4. What is IT's role?
5. What does effective risk management require?
6. What are the major barriers to effective coordination?
7. How to build strategic partnerships and trust between and among stakeholders?
Many readers (I among them) will also appreciate the provision of a "Summary of Learning Objectives" and "Discussion Questions" at the conclusion of each of the 17 chapters. Credit Chopra and Meindl with fully achieving their objectives when they set out to write this book: To help their readers to understand the strategic role of a supply chain, the key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and the analytic methodologies for supply chain analysis.
Bravo!

Customer Reviews:
Good Background Information.......2007-09-20
This material is good basic information for anyone wanting to get started in buying potential foreclosure properties. Begins by explaining basic terms and processes - eg. mortgage foreclosures lead to Sheriff's Sales, while Deeds of Trust lead to "Trustee's Sales" and lack a redemption period (owners can buy back their property during this period, leaving you with nothing to show for your effort, though you do get your money back).
On average, foreclosure buyers have 90 days + 20 days publication time to work a deal with the homeowners. Buying from onwers prior to foreclosure also eliminates the redemption period. FHA and VA loans are much more likely to be assumable.
Buying at auction means having to contend with competitors, an inability to inspect the property prior to bidding, and all sales being final. After foreclosure one is less likely to get a good price, it is harder to inspect the property (utilities probably turned off).
Finding foreclosure properties is eased by looking in public records for "Lis Pendens" (judicial process) or the "Notice of Default" (non-judicial process); there is also the later Foreclosure Auction notice. Other sources include looking in the newspaper of record and/or the County Recorder database. Still other sources include divorce proceedings (likely problems with the lawyers involved), probate filings, FSBO listings, Internet sites (eg. foreclosure(s).com, street signs, Internet ads.
Author also recommends a full title search ($100-$350), and contracts written "Subject to" eg. inspections.
great book.......2007-03-08
i wanted to learn about investing in foreclosures so i purchased this book. it's full of resources and solid advice. it's obvious that the writer has much experience in this field. the writing is easy to read and humorous at times. highly recommended.

Excellent book, writer F. Orlando give's Great insight to
the whole foreclosure process and the way to approach
this business investment. Book written in Easy to read
style, with good legal issues to consider in this business.
Great Read!
Very good for beginners.......2007-01-22
The book's strategy offers a simple method for identification for properties, including how to approach owners AND lenders. Sending attractive offers such as short sales and how to wait out lender approval. This is a very good read for beginners wanting to enter into the foreclosure market, especially in the current situation of higher interest rates and lower consumer demand for real estate. There will be a spike of foreclosures.

The Pre-Foreclosure Real Estate Handbook: Insider Secrets to Locating and Purchasing Pre-Foreclosed Properties in Any Market.......2006-12-28
The Pre-Foreclosure Real Estate Handbook: Insider Secrets to Locating and Purchasing Pre-Foreclosed Properties in Any Market by Frankie Orlando is an excellent resource for people seeking information in a practical, hands-on approach to purchasing pre-foreclosure real estate. The text is organized in a logical manner with sufficient examples and clear explanations of the concepts presented. Although the text is very easy to follow, it also includes an extensive glossary to assist with the more difficult terminology used throughout. Step-by-step instructions and worksheets that are included are particularly useful. This text is recommended with a 5 star rating out of 5 stars.

A good solid supply chain basics book.......2006-05-23
We use this book for supply chain training to new entrants at our firm. It is quite a good supply chain basics book - covering the topic in all its breadth. the coverage is perhaps a slightly less strategic and more technical than our needs - but that is understandable given the background of one of the authors. However, to be fair, it is the best book that we have found on supply chain management to get the people up to speed on the basics.
Price too high.......2004-08-25
What I got was a second Indian Reprint, it costs around $4 in India, but I had to pay around $35 (shippment not inlcuded in this amount)! What an arbitrage!
Good reference material for practitioners.......2003-02-17
I found this book to be a great source of reference for managers. It is not really a good teaching source, as I thought it already starts with a fair amount of assumed previous knowledge and jargon.
The sections that are most well developed are the ones on inventory management and transportation logistics, where I found examples that were directly applicable to situations I encountered in a retail environment. The portion on forecasting was not as useful, and the part on e-business seemed somewhat contrived. Overall, this is the best reference I have found that does not require a heavy amount of mathematical familiarity.
Excellent book overall but..........2003-01-08
I refered and used this book in 2 grad level courses. The first was a business school course on SCM (with an above average quantitative focus for a B-school course) and again for a fully quatitative SC Engineering course. While I was initially very impressed with the book, using this over 2 semesters has raised a few gripes.
For the qualitative issues on SCM {make no mistake, these 'fluff' aspects are very important} there is no other equal. Chopra and Meindl do an outstanding and comprehensive job. They also bring out the importance of using scientific, quantitative techniques for SCM. This however is where my gripes start.
Having brought out the importance of quantitative tools for use in SCM, they do only a moderate job on explaining these tools. For example, the chapter on forecasting (only the most simple and commonly used models are explained) is unnnecessarily complex and confusing. The topics covered are adequete but need revision. Treatment of inventory management also could be more detailed and better explained.
This is an excellent book but for more comprehensive learning (if you want an understanding of the quantitative aspects too), I think this book needs supplementing (say with course notes) or another book like "Modeling the Supply Chain" by Shapiro.
Peter Meindl - The Godfather of modern supply chain mgt.......2001-11-27
Written by one of the leading minds in the field, Peter Meindl of I2 technologies has a lot to teach. This is an excellent text and as a fellow Dallas/Ft. Worth resident, I would enjoy meeting him. If you are an MBA student with a concentration in Operations Management, this text should be required.
Meindl, a management team member of I2, has helped develop I2 into the undisputed champion in enterprise software. While SAP may have the market share with their archaic DOS based application, I2 has windows functionality and everything that matters. They have raised the bar with their supply chain knowledge, leading solutions, and collaborative knowledge in supply chain strategy. This text will give you a big step forward in becoming a Supply Chain leader.

Viewpoint of a novice.......2007-01-10
I bought this book because I was to lead a group in developing an RFP but had no experience with RFP's. I don't know how this book will meet the needs of anyone with a lot of experience but I am extremely impressed by its readability, organization, and applicability. I'm still working on the project but have gotten good feedback on what I've developed, which I could not have done without the guidance and information in the book. It is logically sequenced and appears to cover all bases, though someone with a lot more experience would be better able to assess this. Impressed? Very.
RFP Review.......2006-03-15
The book is an easy read and provides me with the needed understanding of developing an RFP and template.
Resource and guidelines with a coherent approach.......2004-03-01
There are literally hundreds of good books on proposal writing, but only a tiny handful on writing RFPs. From among the handful this book stands out for a number of reasons:
(1) It clearly described the RFP process from start to finish - and RFP development is a process with a defined life cycle.
(2) The author goes well beyond the immediate objective of writing an RFP and managing the process by including thought-provoking material on post-award vendor management. This material sometimes escapes the RFP development team who is more focused on getting to the award milestone without thinking about the post-award ramifications.
(3) It's not boring - the writing is lively, and the material is presented at a fast pace. The pace, however, does not leave gaps. Every facet of the RFP process is covered in sufficient detail.
In addition to the above, the approach set forth in this book is consistent with best practices in RFP development. I especially like the copious checklists, the RFP roadmap, and the way illustrations are skillfully used to reinforce concepts and advice.
Note that the focus of this book is information technology and software acquisition. Some of the material is unique to those domains; however, the basic principles and RFP process can be used for virtually any type of RFP, from office services to purchasing furniture.
Overall, this is the one book I recommend for RFP development. If you are an IT professional, regardless of role, the chances are you will be involved in this process at some point in your career, making this book a valuable addition to your library. If you have recently been assigned to an RFP team you should get this book as soon as possible, and use it as your compass and blueprint if your organization does not already have a formal RFP process in place.
Good Resource.......2003-05-13
A great resource for preparation and review of an RFP. A helpful guide for people with and without RFP experience.
The RFP book that htelp me to do the job well done.......2003-01-04
I was in charge to define the RFP for a big imaging system project and this book gave me the tools to plan, supervise and create the RFP that point out the requirements, so the providers can easily develop the correct solution in their proposal.
This book is ahead. Has very good explanation (easy to read and understand), well structured and the examples are good to have a clear idea of the content that should have all the topic of the RFP. It gave me the tools to map the plan, the definition of the requirements and the development of the RFP document.
This book must be in any library.

Good Content, could have been written better.......2007-01-07
The authors show good command over the subject. There are several key aspects mentioned in the book which are not obvious to everyone. The authors stumble on getting the right message out. In short, it's a very long book to cover a small subject.
Only just okay.......2005-05-26
This book has a lot of stuff in it. It's got a good overview of how to look at your supply chain starting with the supplier of your supplier, and going through to the customer of your customer.
It's got a lot of real world examples, and each of the six chapters ends in a 10-page real world case study of a large corporation.
However, I just couldn't get into it, even though I read it cover to cover. This was a hard book to trudge through, probably because of its very narrow target audience.
This book is written to the level of Senior Vice President of International Operations at a $800+ million company. It's at a pretty high level and maybe that's why it was so hard to read.
With only a few minor modifications, this book could be called: "World Class Marketing" or "Quality Improvement: New Directions." It's technically about Supply Chain Management, but it's at such a very high level.
The Best SCM Literature EVER!!.......2005-04-18
Finally, a book that explains supply chain strategy WITHOUT THE HYPE AND BUZZ WORDS!! The authors were right...this book should've been written years ago coz it will definitely enlighten those trying to unravel the intricacies in crafting a supply chain strategy. This book emphasizes the vital link between business objectives and supply chain strategy. The 5 core principles and its practical applications are discussed opposite real life examples of world class companies like Eli Lilly, Autoliv and the DoD, "the largest supply chain in the world." The frequent reference to the SCOR Model in the book only emphasize the power of the model in crafting and executing the 5 core principles the authors talk about. DON'T LEAVE FOR THE OFFICE WITHOUT THIS!!
good examples.......2005-01-08
Shoshanah Cohen gave a supply chain strategy workshop at a conference I attended and I received a copy of the book after the workshop. The book has a lot of good examples of what real companies are doing and I have been able to use some of the ideas in my own work. It is an easy read.
A practical view of supply chain management.......2004-12-07
Finally, a book that approaches supply chain management from the perspective that it is an integral part of a well-formed business strategy. By using solid examples, the authors illustrate how businesses can use strategic supply chain management to drive competitive advantage. In addition, the authors outline a practical framework to better manage the supply chain.
I recommend this book for supply chain professionals looking for a way to simply and effectively illustrate the competitive power of supply chain management. This book is also a must read for the non-supply chain executive looking for a way to tap into the power of supply chain management.

Customer Reviews:
A boring book with nothing new to share.......2007-09-07
This book offers nothing new in concepts nor does it necessarily make it an interesting reading. You will immediately notice that the authors have just tried to add a lot of pages to the text by stating the same things over and over and over and over. Redundancy is the mantra of this book. I would not pay more than $25 for this book as all it offers is a very simple description and overview of the Purchasing function and Supply Chain Management. There are a lot of better books out there in the market than this one. So, don't waste your money please.
deceptive discription of book.......2007-03-09
The description was deceptive. Bought it thinking its a text book.
Not so hot.......2005-01-05
The book seems to repeat the same things across few chapters example is role of purchasing and different pro's and con's. The recommended practices and business cases are nice to read, but many of those practices got many companies in trouble. Example: book recommends giving procurement cards to all employee and giving them approvals to buy things under $50 to minimize purchasing costs of office supplies and such. Result is that every employee has a stash of everything and huge amount of money is wasted. Additionally, what is recommended by the book is contradicted by its business cases. Example: companies should develop and work in a trusted relationship with its suppliers to achieve most benefits for both. This would include things like vendors performing statistical quality control etc. Next thing is a business case that shows how a company should quality inspect all of its purchases. This seems to be a problem.
I think this book is a good intro to supply chain and has some ideas to get you started, but too much energy is wasted figuring out what the tried and recommended approaches are.
Great reference work.......2000-07-25
If you want one book explaining state-of-the-art thinking in procurement, this is the one. It has chapters on every important topic. It's not a book I would choose to read from beginning to end to learn about purchasing (unless I were a University student) but it's a good starting point for looking deeper into many topics.
Very good vision.......2000-04-26
One of the best of its type - good mix of strategic and tactical. could have been shorter

Customer Reviews:
Decent book, but could be better.......2005-11-30
I liked the content of the book, but I have three complaints.
1. Very large number of charts, graphs and photos which is great, but the book would be much better if they were printed in color instead of black and white.
2. The author needs to create a companion CD to supplement the content in the book.
3. I wasn't expecting to read a lot of Bible verses when I bought a book on Supply Chain Strategy. The author should have saved those for a different type book - not in a textbook. For this reason, the book is not appropriate for a corporate reading list in a litigious environment.
Best Practical Reference.......2003-10-15
This book simply rules the subject area! If you are a practitioner looking for hands-on advice and solid methodology, this is your blueprint. It will jump-start and carry through your Supply Chain/Logistics activities. One of the best Supply Chain books I have encountered. It has a spot on my desk (as opposed to the library).
Academicians, people wanting to broaden horizons, and undergrad students will find this too technical/practical, hard-to-relate, and difficult to pad out their term papers.
Supply Chain Strategy - Classes and Book.......2002-03-01
The classes at Georgia Tech were fantastic and I have been reading the book since I have returned home.
It is the best book on the subject that I have ever read and I will keep it on my book shelf right next to Gordon Garham's Inventory Management for future reference. I don't want to sound stupid but I like tech books that have a lot of pictures. Dr. Ed Frazelle is a great teacher and I give both the classes and the book my most enthusiastic recommendation.
Typos Galore.......2002-01-04
This is a comprehensive high-level book for someone who is familiar with, but needs more information on supply chain. It covers the major areas with a good level of detail.
HOWEVER, there are numerous typos and misspellings. For example, a major table on p.36 has its headings transposed, which leaves the readers trying to guess what the author had in mind. If I'm paying $40-50 for a book, I expect that it would be well-edited.
