Book Description

Written in an informal and non-technical style, this book first explains the theory behind logistic regression and then shows how to implement it using the SAS System. Allison includes several detailed, real-world examples of the social sciences to provide readers with a better understanding of the material. He also explores the differences and similarities among the many generalizations of the logistic regression model.

5 out of 5 stars Must have book for the SAS user.......2007-09-15

In the first place, I am a pathologist writing a review on a book on statistics. That, by itself, will raise a few eyebrows. Few pathologists, in my opinion, understand statistical jargon. Yet, I would recommend this $40 book to even a novice in pathology who wants to do logistic regression modeling. While this books does explain logistic regression like most other books, what sets this book apart, are the real-world examples and the simple SAS code included with each example?
I have specifically been able understand GEE modeling only in this book, as compared to the numerous other books, where I find the statistical jargon intimidating; so much so that, I have ended up getting confused even after a couple of hours worth of intense reading. If you are devoted SAS user, you have probably read this book already. But if you are a novice pathologist and want to start learning a new program, I would advise Stata rather than SAS. SAS, in my opinion is code heavy. Yet, this book will be very useful to understand the varied uses of logistic regression (from exact to GEE analyses, especially from a pathologist's perspective). All discussions are to the point without too much jargon. For $40 this book is great value. I am just waiting to see if a newer version comes up in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Allison's logistic regression book.......2006-11-10

Paul Allison's book on logistic regression is a wonderful introduction to logistic regression. He manages to be rigorous, and yet present the material in an easy-to-understand manner. This would be a useful book even for non-SAS users who want to use logistic regression. As a SAS user, I find it indispensable.

The only drawback is that it has not been updated to cover the capabilities of newer versions of SAS.

4 out of 5 stars Show me how.......2001-08-08

It is always nice to have an example. This is what this book gives you. It also gives you options. SAS commands are written clearly. It still can not be your only logistic regression book. You will need other books to have a better understanding of logistic regression.

5 out of 5 stars You can get by with just this one.......2000-10-15

If you need to understand logistic regression analysis and you must do it in SAS, then you must have this book.

Gives clear, concise explanation of logistic regression, how to accomplish it in SAS, and explains the details of the SAS results.

This book had me up and running in short order.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful.......2000-02-06

I had used this author's SAS book on survival analysis before, so I was expecting another virtuoso performance when this book came out. And I was not disappointed. The book is incredibly useful, provides clear examples, makes you feel like you really understand the statistics, provides voluminous SAS code to illustrate how to implement analyses, and even teaches you a few tricks about how to handle unusual data problems along the way. Highly recommended, even if you don't use SAS!

3 out of 5 stars Dynamics AX guide.......2007-05-07

I would say it is a bit lightweight, but as a complete beginner I have found it a lot easier than wading through the mountains of stuff availble from Microsoft.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Serves Its Purpose.......2006-01-29

I am prompted to write this review owing to the number of negative comments I have seen. I personally read the book and I found it very informative and easy to understand. Axapta is a huge application and it is not very easy to understand, just as how math is a huge and deep topic. However, learning math helps if you understand the fundamental topics. If you miss the fundamentals God help you.

I said this to say that this book is not for the experts who are looking for something deep, it opens your eyes to the fundamentals and gives you a base to start with. I am a self learner and I find a lot of the materials for Axapta hard to grasp if you do not understand the fundamentals. This book indeed opened my understanding to a great extent and some of the things that I already understood I believe were clearly explained. If you are just starting out with Axapta this book is a great place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Great book - get a copy today........2006-01-23

This is an excellent book. It is comprehensive and well written. This book should be read by anyone who is either considering purchasing Dynamics AX or has recently purchased the product. All new users will learn a great deal of information from this book. In fact, all good resellers of Dynamics AX should include a copy of this book at no charge with a sales quote to a potential customer. If I had this book two years ago, I could have saved my company several thousands of dollars in consulting fees alone. This book is an excellent `jump start' to gain overall Axapta knowledge, and is a great value for the money. This book will become a `must read' for all Dynamics AX implementers.

3 out of 5 stars Trying hard to cover everything... but...........2005-12-07

At first glance the book looks very impressive and promising; however you don't have to read many pages before the cold truth of the authors' dilemma hits you. Covering a product as huge as Axapta in less than 500 pages is impossible, so choosing the right level of detail is vital. The authors chose the same approach as the online documentation shipping with the product. They describe in a clear and easy digestible language the most important forms in great detail. The online documentation has rightfully been accused of not providing procedural information (Step-by-step descriptions of how to accomplish tasks spanning multiple forms) or overview information (How everything ties together). Unfortunately this book does not provide that information either. Since the page count is limited one could have hoped non-trivial information was prioritized. That isn't the case. This book is however more than just a rewrite of the online documentation. It contains many valuable and interesting insights where appropriate. Don't expect this book to give you a lot of new information; but it gives you the opportunity to bring it all to the beach.

The content in the book is fairly accurate, and fairly complete. If you are new to Axapta it will help you, if you already are somewhat familiar with the product, the technical inaccuracies and missing key information may throw you off track. An example of missing key information is in the X++ chapter. Here both transaction and exception handling are well described in sequent subchapters. However not a word is mentioned on how they interact, which is something every X++ developer needs to understand to write business logic. Hopefully this and many similar issues will be ironed out in a revised edition.

The architecture chapter is quite a disappointment to me, as it mostly describes deployment scenarios and lists the files that come with the product. The chapters on development and X++ will not teach you to be an Axapta developer. Just like reading a car's manual won't teach you how to drive. In the book there are no examples of business code, but a lot of screenshots and descriptions of the MorphX toolbox. The structure and contents of the development chapters makes me wonder if the authors ever used MorphX themselves.

The book has an edge towards Microsoft, which at times is mind-opening, but mostly plain ignorant. At times it seems more focused on finding ways to crash the system, than ways to successfully avoid the crashes.

By the way: Don't be tricked by the book's title. The book is about Axapta version 3.0 released in 2002. "Dynamics AX" is the name of version 4.0 scheduled to release in 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for almost everyone.......2005-11-29

I'm an experienced JD Edwards consultant moving to Axapta and I have not found it easy even after going, or better trying to go through the existing documentation referred by some of the other reviewers. Reading the book was easy and by far the best investment of time and money I have made in Axapta, and I now feel comfortable that I can take it to the next level by myself. Thanks for the book.

Pierre-Francois Verhulst, with his seminal work using the logistic map to describe population growth and saturation, paved the way for the many applications of this tool in modern mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, economics and sociology. Indeed nowadays the logistic map is considered a useful and paradigmatic showcase for the route leading to chaos. This volume gathers contributions from some of the leading specialists in the field to present a state-of-the art view of the many ramifications of the developments initiated by Verhulst over a century ago.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting combination of blue sky and practical.......2001-09-22

This book is difficult to classify other than it ties together a number of related, but different, disciplines. It is also one of the most interesting books on ERP, CRM and SCM I have ever read because of the eclectic array of topics and fascinating points of view.

Chapters I liked based on professional interest are: Auditing the Implementation, Operation and Maintenance of ERP Software, The Ongoing Change in the Practice of Auditing Information Technology, Auditing Supply Chain Solutions and Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Case Studies in Auditing a Company's Financial Statements and Other Reports, Auditing the Security/Protection Methodology and Providing Improvements. These are solidly written and thoroughly cover all aspects of the topics. This is no surprise if you are familiar with Mr. Chorafas' work, which is heavily slanted towards financial management.

I also liked "The Next Frontier in Technology and in Supply Chain Management", which is one of the more visionary chapters in the book. It also has one of the longest titles I have ever seen (I truncated the complete title name). Unfortunately, like the title, well crafted sentences are not a hallmark of Mr. Chorafas' writing. Despite that, the information he provides between the covers of this book is thought-provoking and excellent fodder for long-range strategic planning.

If you are an architect, strategic planner of CIO of a company that employs or plans to employ any two or the three foundation systems discussed in this book (ERP, CRM or SCM) this book is essential reading. It is also an excellent resource for consultants who specialize in any of the three system types.

      Book Description

This book examines logistics systems in an integrated way. Its goal is to describe and show how to find rational structures for logistics systems considering all the relevant aspects. Building on an understanding of the simplest logistical system with only one origin and one destination, the book treats problems with many origins and one destination, many destinations and one origin, and many origins and many destinations; this is done for systems with and without transshipments. The solutions and methodologies presented in the book are particularly helpful in instances where detailed data are not available and when time is of the essence.

      Book Description

Packed with step-by-step examples, this book shows you how to use the SAS System to perform logistic, probit, and conditional logistic regression analyses. This book enables statisticians, researchers, and new students to learn from the set of examples so that they can perform their own analyses and produce and understand the output. This book focuses on the LOGISTIC procedure but also contains examples that use the CATMOD, GENMOD, PHREG, and PROBIT procedures in SAS/STAT software.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Typically Terse; Mostly for Experts.......2005-03-10

Generally speaking, logistic regression is a statistical technique that tries to explain or predict a dichotomous outcome (e.g., two levels, as in yes/no, succeed/fail, heal/don't heal) from a set of independent variables. For example, we could code quitting smoking as a '1' and not quitting as a '0'. Your outcome (a 1 or a 0 on smoking) may be related (in this hypothetical example) to frequency of smoking, smoking history, physiological and/or psychological features, treatment, or other factors. Logistic regression is used both to describe and to predict such outcomes. The book states this definition once, though not as clearly as the preceeding, then takes off into the mathematics:

"This logistic regression equation models the logit transformation of the ith individual's event probability, p(subscript i) as a linear function of the explanatory variables in the vector, x (subscript i)."

The text gets much more difficult than that.

The SAS Institute's manual on 'Logistic Regression' is most useful for people who already understand a great deal of the rationale and the statistics behind logistic regression. For them, the book's main advantage is its explanation of printed output, and coverage of several related topics. Most importantly, it provides problem examples related to logistic regression, and annotated SAS programs to solve them.

Even the easiest sections of the book assume at least a college-level background in stats, and many sections seem to require post-graduate expertise. There is very little explanation or teaching going on here, and the chapters on various log. reg. applications are simply too brief to learn from. At its most general level, then, it's a user guide for understanding output. For the the very experienced, it's a reference for interpreting output, as a template for writing task-specific SAS log. reg. programs, and for understanding and choosing among various SAS logistic regression techniques. Even experienced users will find some of the explanations lacking, however. For example, the chapter on ROC analysis is out of date, and cites two refences only (the most recent of which is from 1982). Given that this is a growing statistical area, this is just not enough. Other areas are give adequate, although short explanations, and would be quite useful for someone wanting a quick reference.

The book provides nine sample datasets dealing with comsumer choice and medical data. Topics and "examples" include fitting a binary logistic regression model, computing confidence limits, computing customized odds ratios, computing predicted probabilities and classifying observations, creating classification tables, using model selection methods in logistic regression, computing fit tests, producing regression diagnostics, correcting for overdispersion, displaying an ROC curve, ordinal responses, 1:1 matched Data, N:M matched data, fitting interactions, estimating discrete choice probabilities with a mulitnomial logit model, probit analysis for estimating an LD50, and fitting a Bradley-Terry model for paired comparisons. Hopefully, the preceeding list will give you an idea of whether this book is right for you.

I purchased this book because I needed to do a large number of logistic regression runs for my dissertation. It does an excellent job in going through all the SAS code you need in order to write good logistic regression equations. However, I was disappointed by the very limited discussion surrounding the application of the models. Fortunately, it does provide useful references.

The book is useful because it goes beyond the SAS user manuals in explaining how to program logistic regressions and what SAS's output is describing. However, if you do not already have a good understanding of logistic regression, (i.e. you had one lecture on it in your research methods class) you might be better off with something along the lines of Logistic Regression Using the SAS System: Theory and Application by Paul Allison. (I have no affiliation with Dr. Allison.)
