Customer Reviews:
Very useful, highly recommended!.......2005-05-30
This book is very useful and well written!
#1. It covers most of important things in architecture design in enterprise development.
#2. It is easy to read. Easy to understand. To the point and a efficient learning tool.
#3. It is very accurate. With picky eyes, I have not found any inaccuracies so far. (Technology advancement will make some comments out-of-date, but that would be another story).
#4. You do not have to use web service or remoting for this book to be greatly helpful.
#5. It appears that the author knows every corner of distributed system design to a great depth.
Last comment/advice to Microsoft - Microsoft should invest more on this kind of quality books if it wants drag more IT projects on .Net and to defeat the competing platforms.
I recommend this book to IT professionals. 5 stars of course.
Informative as well as suprisingly useful for 70-310.......2004-11-30
Having recently passed 70-310, I found this book to be exceedingly helpful in cementing certain .NET distributed concepts for the exam-- meanwhile, related MCAD/MCSD study guides like those from Sybex and Microsoft (?!) came up short...
Chapters 1-9 of this book provided clear explanations and working examples for 70% of the content I encountered on my recent exam, while topics covered equally well in Chapters 11-15 accounted for the remaining 30%. Even Windows Services can be found about mid-way through Chapter 7.
If you are keen on moving into distributed .NET programming and/or preparing for 70-310 (like me), I would highly recommend this book. I would not have earned my MCAD credential without it...
Good Microsoft N-tier Architecture Text.......2004-11-27
Solid information for those interested in building N-tier architectures in a Microsoft world. Great stuff on how to build business objects -- I haven't found much on Microsoft object caching except in this book. Sadly, MS hasn't gone as deep as JBoss, BroadVision or similar products but this book helps fill the gap.
Excelent Book for Planning a System.......2004-08-26
This book won't tell you every single thing about .Net Remoting, Web Services, Com+ or Message Queueing, but since it gives you a lot of info on all those techs and a lot of others it's the perfect book for people who plan on creating Distributed Applications.
I have read it full now and it helped me a LOT in my work. I work as an application developer at a bank and I'm supposed to do the company workflow system. It has to be very scalable so I needed to build a distributed architecture. This book helped me building this architecture and getting it approved by the board.
Great Book!
Great survey of distributed apps.......2004-07-05
The author has a real gift for explaining the details of the diverse technologies ms offers for creating distributed apps. An excellent book.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding instructional book on installing and using qmail.......2006-02-08
My first edition copy of this book is dog-eared and full of bookmarks. This is an excellent tutorial on installing and using qmail. It includes step-by-step instructions for each task involved in setting up and administering (as well as customizing) qmail. Great text. Highly recommended. You don't need to be a Linux expert to install qmail if you follow this guidebook.
Great starter book for anyone.......2004-07-05
Dave Sill did an excellent job of showing how to setup email server. If you know some Linux commands, you'll have no problem setup your first Linux email server. I personally prefer Dave's Qmail handbook to John Levine's Qmail (I got as well). Levine's Qmail is an great second book.
Best Linux book I ever bought!
Qmail made much easier with this book.......2002-10-11
After a month, and hours of installing and reinstalling FreeBSD and Qmail, I finally got the mail server working right! This was my first attempt at a mail server which I use for my family members and a few friends. There are a few errors in the book in some of the scripts which did cause me many problems. That was a pain. But, even at that, I don't think I would have been able to get Qmail running without this book. It is a great book for a person like me who is always doing something a bit over my head.
Excellent.......2002-05-03
Everything you need to know about Qmail from installation and complete configuration. There is no other book.
Excellent Guide.......2002-02-27
I just finished setting up a mail server at home and this book really made it simple. I'm not a novice, so I can't speak to it's ease of use, but the steps were simple, and a bit verbose and repetitive, but overall the book was invaluable.
I also needed DNS and BIND to get everything working just the way I wanted, so I'd buy them both.

Customer Reviews:
LAME!.......2006-05-05
I'm sorry if this seems a bit ignorant, but this book is SO LAME! If you already work as a windows admin, you should know everything in this book already. Yes, the book is huge, but the font is about 25. Its ridiculous, the thing reminds me of a 6th graders text book, the font is so big. Its a decent book if your trying to learn, or your an entry level admin needing a reference. I do feel a little ripped off; based on the font size (obviously).
An Overview, not a how to guide.......2000-06-03
If you are thinking of buying this book as a "How to Setup Win2k Server" manual, think again.
The authors do a very good job in demystifing Active directory, and kind of gloss over everything else. Is AD an important part of Win2k? Do bears live in the woods? Yes it is important, but you still have to deal with TCP/IP and security too.
Fortunately for the publishers, and us, you can also buy a Win2K stup book, Security book, etc, etc.
Which one do you need?
All talk with little action.......2000-04-26
I have worked with NT for about 4 years. I bought this book because it had many reviews and most of them where good. I figured the couple of bad reviews where people who just like to complain. I buy many books and like most of them. But this book was the biggest waste of money I have come across. This book is definately for beginners who want to setup Users and Groups. It talks about what Windows 2000 Server can do, but shows very little about how to do it. I agree with the earlier review, WHERE'S THE BEEF? Don't waste your money.
Use this book to install and configure Windows 2000 Server.......2000-03-14
I have been administering a fairly large NT network for some time, and I was very excited by the prospect of migrating to Windows 2000. In particular, I was eager to implement Windows' new security protocols as well as to start using Active Directory.
Before I began the installation, I bought this book to help me with some of the new features, and hopefully avoid time-consuming mistakes during configuration. Well, I got even more than I bargained for with this book. The team of admins. who wrote this obviously spen countless hours setting up and breaking down 2000 Server, and they've done an incredible job of conveying their experience in this book. I was particulary impressed by the their ability to identify the more problematic or difficult topics and then go into greater detail or provide examples and exercises. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is responsible for a major Windows 2000 rollout.
Where's the beef?.......2000-03-13
This book has some very good information, but, does not convey information adequate to supply a system administrator with the information necessary to run a network. It appears that that was the intent of the book, and I think the writers missed the mark.
As examples, the backup utility is described. Unfortunately, the creation and maintenance of media pools is not discussed. One cannot use backup effectively (maybe not at all) unless the media pools and media are created and managed in advance of performing a backup.
As a second example, the group policy discussion tempts you about creating an install package for software but never shows you how.
This book will be one that I will use after exhausting other more reliable sources of information when I want an alternative view of Windows 2000 Server architecture and administration.
Not a keeper.

Well maybe not everything. The technology is broad and ever changing. However this book is packed with juicy tidbits about all kinds of broad band communications. I already know a lot of the information. However there are two distinct advantages in this book. One is to tell you what you know from a different point of view; this help round out the concepts in ones head. The second advantage is the book starts from ground zero allowing non technical people the ability to communicate and make educated decisions about communications.
After this overview book you can go into more depth with the manuals from the product. However you will find yourself coming back to this book to affirm the concepts. You can use the book like a dictionary of terms or an encyclopedia.

a book on such advanced topics with no bibliography.......2003-02-28
I must admit that I am very disappointed with this book.
Being somebody who worked in some of the areas, I find most of the definitions and discussions in the book far from being precise, and incomplete. The author tries to cover too much, but in my opinion fails to do so. It just touches some technologies.
My biggest surprise was to see a book of such advanced topics with no references, or bibliograpghy, apart from some ITU Specs or IETF docs inserted into the text. The author probably has a lot of knowledge in a lot of areas, but the book should be able to point towards the real source of the information or provide pointers for more interested readers.
I must admit that I consider the money I spent on this book wasted.
I personally would have liked to see a preface, and read about the aim, intended audience of this book.
This book is needed as much as the "good book".......2001-04-10
This book covers all the basics in Broadband circuits. As a field operations engineer, I deal with all types of circuits. DS0, DS1(T1/EC1), DS3(T3), STS,ISDN, all DSL type circuits, OC3-OC48, and DWDM. My job travels me around the U.S. alone testing and turning up circuits and this book insures me of knowing what is what when dealing with these types of circuits. Clear understanding of terms and procedures for the greenest(new person)technician in the business. I've purchased over $600.00 in books on telephony and telecom over the past 4 years and this is one of few that thats worth holding on to. A must have for broadband junkies like me.

An excellent Resource!.......2000-10-27
I read and review dozens of technology books for my TrainingCity.com classes every year, and I only recommend a small percentage of them. Broadband Telecommunications Handbook is among the best. It's the perfect resource for individuals who need a clear and concise explanation of the technologies encountered in the field every day.
The book gets to the heart of modern WAN technologies and explains concepts such as T1 AMI vs. HDSL in an extraordinarily clear and easy to understand manner. Very few authors have this ability to explain technologies in a way that can be understood by both engineers and non-engineers alike.
In conclusion, Broadband Technologies Handbook deserves a place in your resource library today.
Good Reference & Overview.......2000-08-18
This is a great book. As the title reflects, it is a "Handbook" not and in-deep technical manual to the telecommunications technologies. The examples and illustrations are very easy to understand and the topics are treated in a clear and concise manner. From switching to routing, firewalls & proxies, dsl to cable, it is all here. Many things are explained deep and others enough to understand the role they play. If you need to go deeper, them you should get your manufacturer techmanual and white papers out.

Handbook on Theoretical and Algorithmic Aspects of Sensor, Ad Hoc Wireless, and Peer-to-Peer Networks
ASIN: 1584884657 |
Book Description
Most of the available literature in wireless networking and mobile computing concentrates on the physical aspect of the subject, such as spectrum management and cell re-use. In most cases, a description of fundamental distributed algorithms that support mobile hosts in a wireless environment is either not included or is only briefly discussed. Handbook of Algorithms for Wireless Networking and Mobile Computing focuses on several aspects of mobile computing, particularly algorithmic methods and distributed computing with mobile communications capability. This volume provides the topics that are crucial for building the foundation for the design and construction of future generations of mobile and wireless networks, including cellular, wireless ad hoc, sensor, and ubiquitous networks. Following an analysis of fundamental algorithms and protocols, the book offers a basic overview of wireless technologies and networks and a discussion of the convergence of communication and computation. Other topics include issues related to mobility, with a focus on the creation of techniques that control associated uncertainties; aspects of QoS provisioning in wireless networks; a comparison of numerous wireless TCP proposals; a review of fundamental algorithms for Bluetooth wireless personal area networks (WPANs); and investigations of future voice and video access networks; and a review of potential applications of pervasive computing and mobile e-commerce.

timely summary of methods in this field.......2006-01-17
In typical CRC fashion, this book offers a good summary of its field. There is an authoritative treatment of the key algorithms in wireless nets or for mobile computing. The book brings together the equivalent of centuries of person-years in research and development.
The methods in the book are basically state of the art. At least as far as publicly revealed methods are concerned.
The field is still undergoing active development. The book discusses how quality of service issues are currently handled. One area worthy of improvement.
