3 out of 5 stars For use by "the initiated".......2007-02-18

While Gerald & Co's book may look like a good introduction to Oracle's manufacturing & supply chain management modules, it will make little sense to those who have never used the system or don't have access to it. Because I had three years of hands-on experience with Oracle's E-Business Suite, the book is useful and I'm giving it a 3-star rating.

Things that Gerald & Co. could have done better: more illustrations of what they write about. There are many "bells and whistles" in the software, but the book doesn't have enough "screen shots" to show you where they're located on an Oracle "form." I'm not satisfied with the case study, which they have placed in chapter 22. There are no screen shots there either.

Gerald & Co. are assuming you can navigate and know a lot of the Oracle lingo. If you are new to this, don't expect to learn it from this book. The audiences for the book are intermediate and advanced users.

One could also regard this as a reference book. Use it to answer problems you encounter while using the product or better understand what's going on. In this context, I'd rate it 3 stars, too.

1 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction.......2006-11-03

This book is for users of Oracle Manufacturing and has the end-user in mind Definately not for the the technical minded, site specific Installs and for those who are used to Technical Reference manuals

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Oracle reference tool.......2005-10-17

I was part of the Oracle implementation team at our company, and I have found this book to be a useful tool for myself in the year since implementation as we continue to explore new functionalities. It is also a useful tool for the application users to learn how Oracle works. In fact, I not only purchased this book for myself, but I have purchased copies for several other people in the company. I refer to it all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for the beginners.......2005-08-24

This book is very useful for the beginners as well those who want to brush up their knowledge on oracle applications release 11i.

Mostly it covers all Manufacturing & Distribution modules. Financial modules are not covered in this book. I was planning to buy a book and searching for it and finally ended up in buying a very useful book.

Main drawback is not much of screen captures displayed. So if you want to better understand you have to read it by sitting in front of applications screen and switching the forms as you read.

Overall the book is worth having it.

      Book Description

In today's hyper-competitive business climate, organizations are always under pressure to adapt to new technological trends or "hot" business process models. Radio frequency identification (RFID) is one such trend that promises to revolutionize logistical systems and provide total-lifecycle tracking of products. However, blindly adopting RFID technology without thoroughly considering its impact is just as dangerous as not adopting it at all. Based on the author's experience testing and implementing RFID technology in both industrial and military cases, RFID Metrics: Decision Making Tools for Today's Supply Chains explains how to evaluate the need for this technology. The author focuses on the problems RFID is meant to solve, if such problems exist in your organization, and the metrics you can use to make effective decisions. After establishing what RFID is and how it fits into the systems concept, the book discusses current RFID applications around the world, reveals key metrics for decision making as well as how to develop new metrics unique to RFID, demonstrates a war game for exploring RFID, and presents statistical methods for analyzing the data collected from the war games or gathered during implementation. While other books focus on the nuts and bolts of the technology, RFID Metrics is the first book to outline a detailed method for analyzing and deciding if RFID is right for your organization.

      1 out of 5 stars Great Titles/ Poor Content.......2001-11-08

Chorafas book is tedious to read. The titles are excellent, but the majority of the time I found the content under the title poorly researched, off the subject or focused only on one insignificant point instead of the subject title.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting combination of blue sky and practical.......2001-09-22

This book is difficult to classify other than it ties together a number of related, but different, disciplines. It is also one of the most interesting books on ERP, CRM and SCM I have ever read because of the eclectic array of topics and fascinating points of view.

Chapters I liked based on professional interest are: Auditing the Implementation, Operation and Maintenance of ERP Software, The Ongoing Change in the Practice of Auditing Information Technology, Auditing Supply Chain Solutions and Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Case Studies in Auditing a Company's Financial Statements and Other Reports, Auditing the Security/Protection Methodology and Providing Improvements. These are solidly written and thoroughly cover all aspects of the topics. This is no surprise if you are familiar with Mr. Chorafas' work, which is heavily slanted towards financial management.

I also liked "The Next Frontier in Technology and in Supply Chain Management", which is one of the more visionary chapters in the book. It also has one of the longest titles I have ever seen (I truncated the complete title name). Unfortunately, like the title, well crafted sentences are not a hallmark of Mr. Chorafas' writing. Despite that, the information he provides between the covers of this book is thought-provoking and excellent fodder for long-range strategic planning.

If you are an architect, strategic planner of CIO of a company that employs or plans to employ any two or the three foundation systems discussed in this book (ERP, CRM or SCM) this book is essential reading. It is also an excellent resource for consultants who specialize in any of the three system types.

        Book Description

With the rapid development of information and network technologies and market requirements, new challenges in supply chain design and management have emerged. Notably, there are four new technologies which can affect traditional supply chain management: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology; mobile transaction technology; information handling and storage technology; and multi-agent technology. These new technologies enable global companies to change their ways of thinking about supply chain management in order to cope with the changing environment. In line with this rapid development of technologies are new challenging methodologies: sustainable supply chain management, advanced supply chain planning, available-to-promise (ATP) system and lean supply chain design and management.

Trends in Supply Chain Design and Management: Technologies and Methodologies is a collection of chapters from active researchers and practitioners which describe new trends in supply chain design and management with emphasis on technologies and methodologies. Each chapter contains guidelines detailing the real-world application(s) of the presented technologies and methodologies.

By reading Trends in Supply Chain Design and Management: Technologies and Methodologies, researchers will gain an insight into the evolving trends in supply chain design and management and practitioners will learn about the practical applications of the technologies and methodologies discussed. This book could also be used as a reference handbook by lecturers and postgraduate students in advanced supply chain design and management.

                Book Description

Any supply chain improvement project, even if well conceived, has a good chance of failing, unless the accompanying information technology enables the design. Being prepared, understanding the risks and how to reduce them, will give you the edge you need. Combining a technology focus with practical advice, Making Supply Chain Management Work: Design, Implementation, Partnerships, Technology, and Profits gives you the tools to not only design new supply chains, but to design them effectively. The book begins with an introduction to SCM. It identifies and describes the five management tasks that are changing as organizations increasingly compete as parts of supply chains rather than standalone entities. Doing well in all five is a prerequisite for success. These tasks are: · Designing supply chain for strategic management · Implementing collaborative relationships within the organization · Forging supply chain partnerships with other organizations · Managing supply chain information · Making money from the supply chain The book provides insights into the special requirements for improving supply chains, and consequently improving competitiveness. The chapters show you how to streamline the supply chain change implementation process, including systems changes, reducing the risk of wasting your time and money on an effort that is going nowhere in an area vital to the survival of your business. Making Supply Chain Management Work: Design, Implementation, Partnerships, Technology, and Profits highlights what can go wrong and more importantly, gives you the tools to make it go right.

A complete handbook on a critical issue for today's business leaders-how to improve customer satisfaction, control costs, and maximize profits

Producing a product or service to heighten customer satisfaction-and doing so cost effectively-do not have to be mutually exclusive objectives. The book's twelve chapters are divided into three sections: interfaces and decision-making in an enterprise, product design and time-to-market, and responsive supply chains and manufacturing. A generous supply of real-world examples and more than 200 illustrations enhance the book's readability-as does its detailed table of contents breaking down each chapter into subsections for quick reference. Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars not worth your money.......2004-05-27

I read many books on the topic but this one is a good attempt on the subject but not worth the money, and not worth the time. I usually don't write negative reviews but I personally would not buy this book. I like books that are simplier and yet deep, but this book will easily confuse you. It is too expensive and there are books under $30 will give you muce more information and benefit

4 out of 5 stars Good overall handling of subject.......2001-06-05

This book handles the issues associated with new product introduction very well. Most books on the subject concentrate on either the product designing aspects or the market orientations. This books brings forth the impact and importance of market conditions on the development of a new product very succinctly. It begins by looking at the product development cycle and then leads the reader through the various steps from product design through associated supply-chain management issues to present an overall picture. Appropriately placed illustrative examples and well depicted system diagrams along with graphical display of results increase the utility of the book for both, the in-depth researcher as also the casual reader.
