Book Description

Titles in Barron's Painless Series are textbook supplements designed especially for classroom use by middle school and high school students. The approach of each title is an appeal to students who think that the subject is boring, or too difficult, or both. The authors, all experienced educators, take a light approach, showing kids what is most interesting about each subject, and how seemingly difficult problems can be transformed into fun quizzes, brain-ticklers, and challenging puzzles with rational solutions. In this volume, students learn to see patterns in math word problems, then compute with decimals, fractions, compare rates, and solve proportions. Then using everyday, real-world examples, they explore statistics and probabilities, and learn how math can actually predict future outcomes and events. Other areas of practical math are examined, with a final chapter that searches out problems and activities that can be found on the World Wide Web.

5 out of 5 stars I actually enjoyed working all of the problems!.......2007-09-18

I used this to review for a Middle School Math exam for teachers. I'm very glad I did. The problems aren't too easy, or too hard. I was able to work through all of the problems quickly, and upon completion I felt much more confident about my ability to pass the exam. While taking the exam, I recognized many of the same types of problems, and I was able to work them quickly and, I think, correctly. Although helpful, it was just one of the books I used to prepare. I wish I had also used Painless Algebra and Painless Geometry. I agree with another reviewer, Painless Algebra II, Painless Trig and Painless Calculus would also be helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Forget kids for a minute, adult math phobia is.......2007-03-08

one of the biggest challenges, particularly for those of us in the Great Boomer Glut who are at least 15 years from retirement.

This book is phenomenal for middle and older adults who want to tune up their math chops after many years of neglect.

It's funny how many people in the world WILL NOT actually TEACH math to you or anyone else. Sometimes I think the whole ridiculous "tough love" mentality started in someone's math department.

Marcie is a magnificent exception.

Marcie's two best attributes in this book are: 1) She is more than happy to break everything down into easy-to-latch-onto baby steps; and 2) Her whole focus is INCLUSIVE and supportive.

Working through this book, I've been pleasantly surprised to discover how much I remember and can still do. More importantly, this book seems to have identified exactly where my cut-off point is -- and then extended it substantially further.

For example, I've known about the Pythagorean Theorem for years but this is the first time I ever saw the picture of a triangle with squares coming off each of the 3 sides. Wow! Suddenly I see it in a whole different light. And then using it to measure "crow flying" distance between points only reachable via L shaped road patterns.

Now, I'm ready to jump into Painless Algebra, more confident than I have been about math in a long time.

My only regret is that, to my knowledge, there is no Painless Trigonometry, Painless Calculus or Painless Statistics. Barrons should create these so I can buy them.

Thanks, Marcie. Thanks, Barrons.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest math book.......2001-08-28

This is a really fun book to read. The peoples names are really funny and it is very challenging to do the word problems. I am having so much fun giving the problems to my friends and family to see if they can do them. I know that I will do so much better in school because I have been practicing my word problems. I would suggest that this book should be used in school too.

4 out of 5 stars Great Study Tool..........2007-01-26

Bob Miller's "Calc for the Cluless: Calc I" is very helpful. I find that he does a great job explaining the topics and gives a variety of examples for practice. If the Calc I is great, then the other two books in his series must be great as well.

5 out of 5 stars Math Made Easy!.......2006-04-05

Bob Miller takes very difficult concepts and makes them extremely easy to grasp. It is the one math book that will not make you tear your hair out of your head!
The author uses a bit of humor and emotion to make math understandable to the average layman. The books are meant to be a supplement to whatever math text you are using. After Bob explains the concepts you will breeze through your textbook's examples. A great book at a great price!

1 out of 5 stars This is awful........2002-03-25

I don't know what planet miller is from, but it surely isn't one of a student. There are tons of other books out there to learn by besides this one. It is so hard to understand and the examples are just stupid. I am teaching myself calculus and I have found Calculus Made Easy and the Barron's calculus books to be much better. Of course, some of the best books can be found at your local library which were written in the early 1900s.

This book is more designed to go along with classroom instruction, but it really isn't good at that either. I would not recommend this.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good introduction to calculus.......2001-06-16

I bought this book to help me understand calculus, as a student returning to a graduate program after many years out of school. This was definitely not the book to buy. I understood my textbook more than Calc for the Clueless. Lots and lots of equations but very little in the way of explanations.

2 out of 5 stars A good review for a final exam, but ..........1998-10-24

I ordered this book hoping for a good *introduction* to calculus, with some intuitive explanations of some of the basic concepts of calculus. Instead, this book is meant to help a student solve problems correctly, without necessarily improving their understanding. The book's style is annoying - it's written in 1st person, and every page has lots of !!!'s. For example one chapter begins, "The subject I beleive I teach better than anyone in the world is..." The problem solving methods are clear and it will work for a review, but it wouldn't work for someone who had never seen the course, and I don't think it would help someone understand what calculus is all about.

    Book Description

Research by cognitive psychologists and mathematics educators has often been compartmentalized by departmental boundaries. Word Problems integrates this research to show its relevance to the debate on the reform of mathematics education.

Beginning with the different knowledge structures that represent rule learning and conceptual learning, the discussion proceeds to the application of these ideas to solving word problems. This is followed by chapters on elementary, multistep, and algebra problems, which examine similarities and differences in the cognitive skills required by students as the problems become more complex. The next section, on abstracting, adapting, and representing solutions, illustrates different ways in which solutions can be transferred to related problems. The last section focuses on topics emphasized in the NCTM Standards and concludes with a chapter that evaluates some of the programs on curriculum reform.

Richard Lederer gets a greater charge out of the English language than a kid gets from a Volkswagen full of clowns. His playful examination of "the most tintinnabulating of the world's tongues" in The Word Circus is more fun than a barrel of monkeys (however fun that is), and Dave Morice's illustrations are no sideshow: they are as clever and charming as the text they accompany.

There's a lot going on in Lederer's big tent. Words are beheaded in one ring (the devil becomes evil) and curtailed in another (watch this priest become someone who pries). Over there, they're being cut right in two (does he bewilder? Be wilder!). Step right up, barks our emcee at the homophone (ewe/u/yew/you), and watch me juggle one phrase to make another: hand me the nudist colony and I'll show you no untidy clothes. Palindromes, like push-me-pull-yous, parade to and fro. And oh, the verbal freaks you'll meet: grammagrams, heteronyms, vowelless things; consonant packs (catchphrase) and silent strings (Brougham).

According to Lederer, the late poet James Merrill once commented that, "We speak wistfully of sounding the depths of language, but language has its shallows too, and we can drown in those just as easily as in the raptures of the former." Lederer certainly does. Let his circus begin! --Jane Steinberg

Cut off its tail, and now it's a fruit
Cut off its tail once more and you read
The name of a vegetable small as a seed (Lederer 116)

After reading Richard Lederer's The Word Circus you will be able to look at riddles like these and come up with the answers. The Word Circus is a fun way to become more alert to the words we use every day. Lederer makes you think about words, and he relates them to the circus. His entire book takes you through a circus; he starts with the barker who introduces the book and tells you what you should expect to see in the chapters following. He introduces you to things such as grammargrams, words that are pronounced and consistent only of letter sounds. Like the word cutie, which could be written as QT. He also talks about anagrams, beheadment, curtailment, palindromes, semordnilabs, acrobatic words, charade words and kangaroo words, all different ways to look and play with words. Lederer has fun with words and after reading his book it is easy to begin playing with words yourself. It is a great book to accompany any class studying the elements of words, or just for someone who wants to become more aware of the English language.

    3 out of 5 stars Word Circus.......2000-03-05

Word Circus is a wonderfully entertaining look at the English language. The cartoon illustrations are a great addition. Well worth a look if you are interested in the many different ways the English language can be used to amuse, or confuse.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic words, terrific 'toons! Magical wordplay circus!.......1998-12-10

I never dreamt there could be a book about language that was so much fun. Richard Lederer's text truly creates a circus, complete with acrobats, clowns, animal tamers, lions, tigers--wow! Dave Morice's hilarious cartoons leap off the page and fly through the air with the greatest of ease. There must be at least 300 drawings in so many different styles that there's a surprise on every page. It's amazing that Lederer and Morice have produced a book where words and pictures interact as perfectly as they do. I've never seen this done so well before. This must be the greatest, most entertaining wordplay book of all. I hope they put together a new show soon! Encore!

    5 out of 5 stars Jumping words? They're addictive........1998-09-07

I have been fortunate to have a pre-publication copy of Word Circus. This is the first time I have enjoyed my native language!

My prior reactions to composition and reading pushed me to computerdom and geekdom. Word Circus showed me our language too has those twists and relationships that I find appealing in computerdom. Richard Lederer has put together more twists and relationships in this book than a year of soap operas!

    Besides, it's a hoot!
