4 out of 5 stars A good solid supply chain basics book.......2006-05-23

We use this book for supply chain training to new entrants at our firm. It is quite a good supply chain basics book - covering the topic in all its breadth. the coverage is perhaps a slightly less strategic and more technical than our needs - but that is understandable given the background of one of the authors. However, to be fair, it is the best book that we have found on supply chain management to get the people up to speed on the basics.

4 out of 5 stars Price too high.......2004-08-25

What I got was a second Indian Reprint, it costs around $4 in India, but I had to pay around $35 (shippment not inlcuded in this amount)! What an arbitrage!

5 out of 5 stars Good reference material for practitioners.......2003-02-17

I found this book to be a great source of reference for managers. It is not really a good teaching source, as I thought it already starts with a fair amount of assumed previous knowledge and jargon.

The sections that are most well developed are the ones on inventory management and transportation logistics, where I found examples that were directly applicable to situations I encountered in a retail environment. The portion on forecasting was not as useful, and the part on e-business seemed somewhat contrived. Overall, this is the best reference I have found that does not require a heavy amount of mathematical familiarity.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book overall but..........2003-01-08

I refered and used this book in 2 grad level courses. The first was a business school course on SCM (with an above average quantitative focus for a B-school course) and again for a fully quatitative SC Engineering course. While I was initially very impressed with the book, using this over 2 semesters has raised a few gripes.

For the qualitative issues on SCM {make no mistake, these 'fluff' aspects are very important} there is no other equal. Chopra and Meindl do an outstanding and comprehensive job. They also bring out the importance of using scientific, quantitative techniques for SCM. This however is where my gripes start.

Having brought out the importance of quantitative tools for use in SCM, they do only a moderate job on explaining these tools. For example, the chapter on forecasting (only the most simple and commonly used models are explained) is unnnecessarily complex and confusing. The topics covered are adequete but need revision. Treatment of inventory management also could be more detailed and better explained.

This is an excellent book but for more comprehensive learning (if you want an understanding of the quantitative aspects too), I think this book needs supplementing (say with course notes) or another book like "Modeling the Supply Chain" by Shapiro.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Meindl - The Godfather of modern supply chain mgt.......2001-11-27

Written by one of the leading minds in the field, Peter Meindl of I2 technologies has a lot to teach. This is an excellent text and as a fellow Dallas/Ft. Worth resident, I would enjoy meeting him. If you are an MBA student with a concentration in Operations Management, this text should be required.

Meindl, a management team member of I2, has helped develop I2 into the undisputed champion in enterprise software. While SAP may have the market share with their archaic DOS based application, I2 has windows functionality and everything that matters. They have raised the bar with their supply chain knowledge, leading solutions, and collaborative knowledge in supply chain strategy. This text will give you a big step forward in becoming a Supply Chain leader.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Decent book, but could be better.......2005-11-30

I liked the content of the book, but I have three complaints.
1. Very large number of charts, graphs and photos which is great, but the book would be much better if they were printed in color instead of black and white.
2. The author needs to create a companion CD to supplement the content in the book.
3. I wasn't expecting to read a lot of Bible verses when I bought a book on Supply Chain Strategy. The author should have saved those for a different type book - not in a textbook. For this reason, the book is not appropriate for a corporate reading list in a litigious environment.

5 out of 5 stars Best Practical Reference.......2003-10-15

This book simply rules the subject area! If you are a practitioner looking for hands-on advice and solid methodology, this is your blueprint. It will jump-start and carry through your Supply Chain/Logistics activities. One of the best Supply Chain books I have encountered. It has a spot on my desk (as opposed to the library).

Academicians, people wanting to broaden horizons, and undergrad students will find this too technical/practical, hard-to-relate, and difficult to pad out their term papers.

5 out of 5 stars Supply Chain Strategy - Classes and Book.......2002-03-01

The classes at Georgia Tech were fantastic and I have been reading the book since I have returned home.
It is the best book on the subject that I have ever read and I will keep it on my book shelf right next to Gordon Garham's Inventory Management for future reference. I don't want to sound stupid but I like tech books that have a lot of pictures. Dr. Ed Frazelle is a great teacher and I give both the classes and the book my most enthusiastic recommendation.

3 out of 5 stars Typos Galore.......2002-01-04

This is a comprehensive high-level book for someone who is familiar with, but needs more information on supply chain. It covers the major areas with a good level of detail.

HOWEVER, there are numerous typos and misspellings. For example, a major table on p.36 has its headings transposed, which leaves the readers trying to guess what the author had in mind. If I'm paying $40-50 for a book, I expect that it would be well-edited.

Book Description

This book shows leading-edge strategies to:

* Implement a business model that offers an unbeatable combination of responsiveness, cost, and the products that customers want when they want them.

* Achieve substantial cost advantages from eliminating inventory, forecasting, expediting, kitting, setup, and inefficient fire-drill efforts to customize products.

* Efficiently mass customize products for niche markets, countries, regions, industries, and individual customers.

* Substantially simplify supply chains - not just "manage" them - to the point where parts and materials can be pulled into production without forecasts, MRP, purchasing, waiting, or warehousing.

* Supply OEM assemblers or resupply stores rapidly on-demand and avoid carrying expensive inventory. Eliminate out-of-stocks from underproduction and avoid all the problems of overproduction: obsolescence, write-offs, returns, and discounting to sell obsolete merchandise.

* Ship directly to customers or stores and be the first to market with new technologies since distribution "pipelines" do not have to be emptied first.

* Grow sales and profits by expanding sales of standard, customized, derivative, and niche market products, while enhancing sales to existing customers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Build-to-Order & Mass Customization.......2006-12-29

Mass customization is a goal of almost every manufacturing organization. It is especially difficult to find in one book the essential tools, methods and concepts which will enable an organization to migrate towards a build-to-order or mass customization system. This book provide practical advice regarding product rationalization, design standardization and other tools, methods and concepts which any organization will find immediately useful in expanding its operational flexibility.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and useful.......2006-03-01

If you are a manager in something related with production, or just interested in Mass Customization, this book is for you. It brings a new aproach to the usual concepts, and may change your point of view about supply chain management or product design.
I really consider it's worth the trouble reading it

5 out of 5 stars Feedback from a mass customization implementor.......2004-06-30

This is a very practical, "must-have" book--in contrast to the earlier "wouldn't-it-be-nice" writings that focus on the mass customization or build-to-order paradigm shift. This excellent book shows how to implement mass customization including the prerequisites, like product line rationalization and standardization, that greatly simplify supply chains and operations and thus make it easier to implement mass customization. The chapter on outsourcing is the most thorough treatment out there -- reading this would save many companies from costly mistakes that inhibit flexibility and thwart mass customization.

Five chapters on supply chain management show how to simplify supply chains to the point where parts and materials can be pulled into production on-demand to support on-demand production. Intricate perspective plant drawings show the flow of parts and information for the mass customization of fabricated or electronic products. The two chapters on total cost and how to quantify it are something all companies need, especially mass customizers. The book concludes with a chapter on implementation and another that presents the business case for mass customization.

The 520 page book is comprehensive, but busy executives can get up to speed quickly by reading the executive summary which summarizes the whole book. It is easy to read with hundreds of side-bars which highlight key points. It makes a fantastic reference book with hundreds of headings and a huge index.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of opinion - but little substance.......2004-06-26

The transition towards Build-to-order is a challenge thay many industries face today. Offering customized products in increasingly demanding and dynamic markets renders current forecast-driven strategies more and more ineffective. The current incentive crisis in the auto industry marks a case in point.

Unfortunately this book falls short of capturing the complexity of this transition, which is not helped by the general lack of emprical evidence. I would have expected a comprehensive discussion of the organisational changes needed to make the transition, but instead the book seems to feature the author's personal opinion based on a few limited cases only. Overall a rather disappointing title.

4 out of 5 stars Practical and easy to understand.......2004-02-24

This is an excellent "how-to" book with practical and detailed insights. The only complaint are the numerous typos that kept on breaking the flow of the reading...about one per page just in the Introductory chapter. However, unlike most strategy books, this book not only tackles "what to do" but more importantly "how to do it". Great book except for the typos.

5 out of 5 stars How to avoid or eliminate a "weak link".......2007-08-22

This is one in a series of several dozen volumes that comprise the Harvard Business Review Paperback Series. Each offers direct, convenient, and inexpensive access to the best thinking ("ideas with impact") about the given subject in articles originally published by the Harvard Business School Review. I strongly recommend all of the volumes in the series. The individual titles are listed at this Web site: www.hbsp.harvard.edu. The authors of various articles are among the world's most highly regarded experts on the given subject. Each volume has been carefully edited. Supplementary commentaries are also provided in most of the volumes, as is an "About the Contributors" section that usually includes suggestions of other sources that some readers may wish to explore.

In this volume, the reader is provided with eight articles whose authors provide a variety of perspectives on managing the value chain. Given when they first appeared in the HBR (1993-1998), some but remarkably little of the material is dated. Here are brief excerpts from the Executive Summaries of two articles:

"As businesses as diverse as auto manufacturing and financial services move toward modular designs, the authors say, competitive dynamics will change enormously. No longer will assemblers control the final product: suppliers of key modules will gain leverage and even take on responsibility for design rules. Companies will compete either by specifying the dominant design rules (as Microsoft does) or by producing excellent modules (as does disk drive maker Quantum does)." Managing in an Age of Modularity," Carliss Y. Baldwin and Kim B. Clark

"In today's fast-changing competitive environment, strategy is no longer a matter of positioning a fixed set of activities along that old industrial model, the value chain. Successful companies increasingly do not just add [begin italics] value [end italics], they [begin italics] reinvent [end italics], it. The key strategic task is to reconfigure roles and relationships among a constellation of actors - su0pplers, partners, customers - in order to mobilize the creation of value by new combinations of players." From Value Chain to Value Constellations: Designing Interactive Strategy, Richard Normann and Rafael Ramirez

I also want to include a brief portion of Joan Magretta's interview of Victor Fung. He later develops many of his thoughts in greater depth in a book, Competing in a Flat World, co-authored with Yoram (Jerry) Wind. Fung is Group Chairman of Li & Fung, Hong Kong's largest export trading company.

Magretta: "Can you give me an example of how you reach into the supply chain to shorten the buying cycle?"

Fung: "We come in and look at the whole supply chain. We know the Limited is going to order 100,000 garments, but we don't know the style or colors yet. The buyer will tell us that five weeks before delivery. The trust between us and our supply network means that we can reserve undyed yarn from the yarn supplier. I can lock up capacity at the mills for the weaving and dying with the promise that they'll get an order of a specified size; five weeks before delivery, we will let them know what colors we want. Then I say the same thing to the factories. `I don't know the product specs yet, but I have organized the colors and the fabric and the trim for you, and they'll be delivered to you on this date and you'll have three weeks to produce so many garments.'...It's all about flexibility, response time, small production runs, small minimum-order quantities, and the ability to shift direction as the trends move."

These brief excerpts are representative of the thrust and flavor of all of the material provided in this volume. Of course, before managing a value chain, it is first necessary to design and then establish one that is most appropriate to the given organization. For cutting-edge thinking on that, I highly recommend Enterprise Architecture as Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson as well as Dean R. Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement: Rethinking the Way We Measure And Drive Organizational Success and Richard Ogle's Smart World: Breakthrough Creativity and the New Science of Ideas.

2 out of 5 stars Typical professor-speak BS.......2003-07-09

I have a degree in Supply Chain Mgmt and I now work as a Supply Chain Consultant for a company in Atlanta. I picked up this book for useful tips and strategy and I was dissapointed with its contents. Its full of professor-speak BS, all the buzzwords and hip MBA slogans, but its short on anything that's practical. I would have enjoyed this book if were still a wet-behind-the-ears undergrad, real world experience makes cute catchprases and lofty anecdotes irrelevant.

4 out of 5 stars Compilation of HBR Articles.......2002-11-20

5 out of 5 stars top notch.......2000-11-11

Once again, HBR has produced an accessible book that highlights the forefront of ideas of the value chain. The best part of books in this series is that you don't have to commit to reading the whole book at one time. You can pick up the book when you have time and read a whole case and feel like you are still able to add to you strategy knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Harvard Business Review on Managing the Value Chain.......2000-08-04

Excellent cases. If you are an operations professional, you'll study, learn and live by whats discussed here. There are a couple of examples that seem dated here, but that is to get the fundamentals right and I dont complain! I am a believer in HBR and this one again goes on to prove why.

3 out of 5 stars used only the cd.......2007-01-03

the software delivered on cd with this book is worth, i didn't read the book. the ERP simulator is a very good concept, the application itself however is buggy, i think they released unfinished beta version.

1 out of 5 stars What is it? Pull everything and call it ERP?.......2001-03-23

I should believed Jim (another reviewer of this book). This book does not focus on ERP. Rather, it's a basic operation management book. There are only 2-3 chapters that really talk about ERP but only introduction. If you look for the introduction, "Daniel E. O'Leary" book is much more valuable (Enterprise Resource Planning Systems : Systems, Life Cycle, Electronic Commerce, and Risk). Although I am an IE, I don't think this book will be interesting other IE too. Like I said in subject, the author(s) try to pull everything, e.g., SCM, OM, and ERP and call it's an integration. The simulation game does not capture neither "fundamental" or "application". I still don't understand why APICS publish this book in the market.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for ERP users and providers.......2000-05-17

As an almost novice in ERP systems, I found it interesting to follow up all the chapters of this book: "ERP; tools, techniques, and applications for integrating the supplu chain". The book starts with the history of ERP and descriptions of every aspect of enterprise production systems. Chapters on backgrounds for operations management and each module of ERP systems follow this introductory part. At the end, real-world application issues and implementation problems are discussed. Examples and attached simulator (MICSS, contained in a CD-ROM) provide further demonstration of real case studies. I recommend this book to the intermediate level of ERP users of developers.

The Purchasing Machine, by supply-management professionals Dave Nelson, Patricia E. Moody, and Jonathan Stegner, presents a strong argument for the growing importance of this highly specialized facet of the manufacturing process--incorporating "purchasing, money and material flows, ownership of acquisition and sourcing strategies, and even intellectual property movement and control"--along with a series of related measures that could carry companies to the top in years ahead. It also focuses on the leadership skills necessary to make them a reality. The authors admit that their best-practice companies (American Express, Flextronics, Whirlpool, Harley-Davidson, IBM, John Deere, Honda of America, Sun Microsystems, SmithKline Beecham, and DaimlerChrysler) aren't perfect in all areas, as evidenced by the recent tribulations of the latter automaker. But each has learned to excel in a particular area, such as customer relations or systems innovations, and the authors describe them and ways their examples might help others cut costs and turn resultant savings into "lower consumer prices, exciting products, or fatter shareholder returns." Nelson, Moody, and Stegner identify 20 of these best practices (such as Training, Supplier Information Sharing, and Loaned Executives), and show how "the discipline of acquiring and moving material" can be turned to strategic advantage. --Howard Rothman

    Book Description

Every day companies leave billions of dollars in invisible, unrealized savings on the table because of poor supply chain management practices. Now supply management experts Dave Nelson, Patricia E. Moody, and Jonathan Stegner show not only how leading companies recoup these savings through their mastery of target costing, value engineering, and supplier development, but how supply chain management -- the discipline of acquiring and moving material -- has become a manufacturing company's hottest competitive weapon.

Based on a survey of 247 purchasing managers and more than 1,000 hours of interviews and on-site visits, the authors have selected ten top firms whose supply management pioneers excel at twenty "best practices." With cases and stories, Nelson, Moody, and Stegner show how these leading-edge purchasing departments at American Express, SmithKline Beecham, DaimlerChrysler, Harley-Davidson, Honda of America, IBM, John Deere, Whirlpool, Flextronics, and Sun Microsystems have put into place pathbreaking processes and procedures. Here, for example, described in step-by-step detail, are Chrysler's SCORE program and Honda's strategic sourcing strategy that saved the companies billions. The book also includes a crucial section on the next stage of supplier development that will involve the sourcing and allocation of ideas as well as materials.

The authors provide concrete, practical steps to improvement that any supply chain manager can take to successfully implement these best practices. The Purchasing Machine will be required reading for logistics, purchasing, and procurement managers in hundreds of thousands of companies. The authoritative nature of the authors' source material is certain to make this the single most important and practical reference on best purchasing practices for years to come.

Every day, businesses leave hard-earned dollars on the table that could have yielded lower consumer prices, exciting new products, or fatter shareholder returns. These companies don't even notice that cash is slipping away at the far end of the supply chain -- procurement, design, and development. The key to saving these dollars is to become proficient in target costing, value engineering, and supplier development -- "the new basics of supply management". The Purchasing Machine describes the costs, benefits, implementation, and results of the twenty best practices that must be in place in order to achieve world-class supply management objectives. These include cost management, value analysis, delivery improvement, supplier quality circles and support services, and purchasing systems. Led by Dave Nelson, the authors profile the top ten purchasing organizations -- including DaimlerChrysler, Honda of America, Harley Davidson, IBM, and John Deere -- and show how they have succeeded. Their book is a vital resource for all logistics, purchasing, and procurement managers who want to understand how to make their company both smart and rich.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing Book.......2007-08-11

There is very little to offer supply management professionals in this book. It is poorly written and the examples are of minimal value. It is clear that the authors are really only comfortable in large manufacturing environments. I am disappointed I paid good money for this book.

1 out of 5 stars How the Top Ten Companies Shouldn't Manage Their Chains.......2005-05-06

As a senior management exec, I'd have to say that this book was of no help at all. Although it has helped the supposed top ten companies with purchasing, I have used a completely different strategy using simple purchasing techniques. I suggest you read, "Managing and Purchasing Problem Solvers" by Jonathan T. Monczka. This book is much more efficent describing management principles clearly. I do not reccomend "The Purchasing Machine" at all.

    2 out of 5 stars Very Average.......2002-06-22

As a purchasing professional, I turned to this book to gain insight to new or advanced purchasing practices that might help me in my work and I was very enthusiastic about the book when I began reading it. Instead of new knowledge, I found repetitive stories about the mass production environments in the automotive and related industries. Although some new thoughts or ideas were presented, I did not feel as if this book taught me anything novel or cutting edge. It is simply a repeat of purchasing concepts that can be found in many other operations or supply chain books flavored with managerial buzz words and the self-glorifying personal success stories of the authors and the companies they work for. If you work in a job shop environment or for a small to medium size business, this book is virtually useless. If you are in a huge mass production environment with a large budget, it might be of some value, but my guess is that you would already be familiar with the concepts presented.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of words, little content.......2001-10-22

Ifyou are looking for a "how to" book, look somewhere else. This book appears to have only general rules of the thumbs , wrapped in lots of manager lingo (people resource allocation, globalization, etc.) Overal very disapointing. The only positive side are the occasional industry examples, but there are not enough of them to make this book a good buy.

1 out of 5 stars And where is the beef?.......2001-10-01

Based on an extensive research project this book promises a lot but delivers nothing. The first thing that you have to recognize is that there is hardly any structure at all. Repitions abound without adding any value. The style of writing is close to unbearable - they could have put the contents into a fourth of the pages. The cases are sketchy at best; they claim to offer best practices but are nothing new. The book tries to look into the future and puts forward a wildly speculative view of what the authors think lies ahead; again they do not offer a vision but describe the status quo in future tense. For people who like real satire I recommend Moody's Harley Davidson poem! Summary: Only recommended for those who need to own every book on the subject...

    Book Description

It is not surprising that many companies are involved in the analysis of their supply chains. Most textbooks do not include models and decision support systems robust enough for industry. DESIGNING AND MANAGING THE SUPPLY CHAIN: Concepts, Strategies, and Cases discusses these problems, models and concepts at that appropriate level. While many core supply chain management issues are interrelated, the authors have tried, when possible, to make each chapter as self contained as possible, so that the reader can refer directly to chapters covering topics of interest. Each chapter utilizes case studies and numerous examples. Mathematical and technical sections can be skipped without loss of continuity. The book also contains two software packages, the Computerized Beer Game and the Risk Pool Game which help illustrate many of the concepts discussed.

    4 out of 5 stars A good choice for a beginning text.......2006-07-06

I have this book as my text in the Business program at the University of Phoenix. I am not a supply chain manager and do not aspire to be, but it is a required course. Some of the math is a bit daunting (the phrase "using simple calculus" is an oxymoron to many) but even without knowing calculus the case studies and discussions convey the fundamentals effectively.

Visually, the book is also good, with a layout and graphic design that makes reading easier and not at all a strain on the eyes. That might not seem important when you are shopping for a text, but when you are reading the third chapter of the day sometime between supper and midnight, it will!

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Phenomenon.......2006-05-10

Words can not explain how much this book is valuable. Its pragmatic approach to supply chain is wonderful. I am sure any reader will have the same idea after reading this book. I really appreciate this great job. Special thanks to the authors.

This book one of the rarest ocasions in SCM field when you read a book and enjoy its contents to the fullest. I agree with ine of the other reviewers that this is one of the BEST books about SCM. I highly recomend it as one of MUST have SCM books.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive book on supply chain management.......2003-01-17

The 1st edition of this book, authored by three leading scholars and consultants in the important, fast developing field of supply chain management, won several awards and high critical acclaim from professional associations, scholars, and managers.

The 2nd edition has addressed the few gaps in the the original edition, noticed mainly by by those who, like me, used the book to teach university level courses. Thus, in the new edition, anything complex (especially, quantitative ideas) is explained even more clearly and thoroughly than in the 1st edition. The managerial implications of research findings are spelled out even better, with more examples. Short, insightful discussion questions have been added following each chapter, and there are several new, interesting case studies in several chapters. Valuable new material has also been added, e.g., research findings and examples on how to design win-win supply chain contracts, and up-to-date material on the impact of e-commerce and information technology on supply chain management.

This book will be of value to all managers, but probably most to managers at middle and senior levels, as it provides a clear, coherent view of the entire subject while emphasizing strategic and tactical level decisions and planning. The authors have made a truly important contribution to the understanding and practice of supply chain management.

    Book Description

SCM doesn't change management goals, but relies on new knowledge, practices, and skills to better achieve those goals. Going it alone, without collaborating with supply chain partners, is a dead-end strategy. Without a doubt, effective supply chains will be the product of successful application of project management disciplines coupled with innovations in supply chain management. The question remains how do you take your supply chain from dysfunctional to competitive? The first book to take a project management approach to supply chain management, Supply Chain Project Management: A Structured, Collaborative, and Measurable Approach explains a four-stage progression toward world-class supply chain project management. The author provides a template of the stages encountered when moving to competitive supply chains, delineates the processes that organizations must implement if they are to advance from one stage to the next, and describes best practices for how to get there. He supplies structured approaches for supply chain analysis and documentation, and illustrates the concepts with examples from the trenches. In the supply chain world, managers must choose between the "business as usual" single company approach or exploiting innovations in supply chain management and project management to their advantage. Covering the how-tos for implementing supply chain improvement, this easy-to-use guide details the steps to developing a strategy, reducing costs, and generating revenue. It shows you how to combine SCM and project management knowledge and practice to develop and execute supply chain strategies.

4 out of 5 stars Great book but with some flaws in referencing tables & Figures.......2005-11-15

This is an excellent book connecting project management and supply chain. You can hardly find anything out there that relates the two.
However, it can be frustrating when most chapters have errors in its referencing of figures and tables. For example in pg.123 it reference figures 8.4 which measures "mutual adjustment" --- however, figure 10.4 shows the mutual adjustment not figure 8.4.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Supply Chain Managers!.......2004-05-19

James Ayers's earlier book, "Handbook of Supply Chain Management", addresses many aspects of Supply Chain with a mathematical precision.
The author should be commended for his newly published book, "Supply Chain Project Management", venturing into project management in Supply Chain application, an area which supply chain managers depend more and more.
