Great for the in dept look at a well run warehouse. Has all the details to help you start or clean-up an operation and help it run like a well oiled machine.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must...........2006-10-30

This book is a must for ANY professional working in the finished-goods/products Fulfillment/Distribution world. If your work and responsibilities span anywhere within a FC/DC, you should pick up this book. For less than one hundred bucks, you get one of the best written, concise handbooks I have ever encountered.

It's very important to note that this is not just a dictionary-like handbook, but rather a book that is actually easily readble and enjoyable. It is not for novices, but for anyone with some level of experience, the book comes to life and will help you build depth.

I work for a major e-retailer that disbributes products to end customers. Having worked many years here and picking up most of the know-how from experience alone, I am now questioning why our learning dept doesn't have the insight to make this book a "required" manual for all when we first started. It is excellent and provides great explanations and applications .

Buy it. If I ran a DC/FC, this is a must read for all my mgrs and jr mgrs.

5 out of 5 stars Great warehousing and material handling book.......2003-05-03

This is the best book I've ever found on material handling and warehouse storage. Though a little pricey, this book has content that makes it well worth the cost. Extensive detail on material handling and storage equipment. Also has separate chapters dedicated to small item warehouses, case-pick warehouses, and pallet warehouses.
Anyone designing a new warehouse or redesigning an existing one should read this book.

Book Description

The Supply Chain Council (SCC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing best practices in supply chain management. But until now, there have been no books available based on these preferred techniques. Supply Chain Excellence gives professionals implementing new supply chain projects a clear, step-by-step guide to adopting the accepted and proven methodologies developed by the SCC. This book uses the council's Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) Model, showing readers how they can:

* align strategy, material, workflow and information * conduct the proper competitive analysis to define business opportunity * establish the metrics that will determine the project's level of success * gain internal support by educating employees and executives

Using a unique SCOR Project Roadmap, Supply Chain Excellence is an instruction manual for achieving supply chain success.

5 out of 5 stars An "objective, unbiased way to define supply chain management".......2007-06-06

SCOR is an acronym for the Supply Chain Operations Reference business model that was developed by the Supply Chain Council. (For more information about SCC, please visit http://www.supply-chain.org/index.ww.) In this volume, Peter Bolstorff and Robert Rosenbaum explain what the SCOR model is, how to use it most effectively, and why it can help any organization (regardless of size or nature) to improve its supply chain management. When reading this volume, it is important to keep in mind that effective management of any supply chain model depends upon active and collaborative engagement in the process by (literally) everyone involved, at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise.

Many readers will especially appreciate the format that Bolstorff and Robert Rosenbaum selected within which to present their material. After two introductory chapters in which they discuss the supply chain operations reference model and then suggest how to build organizational support for supply chain improvement, they focus on the implementation of a four-phase process during a recommended seventeen-week timeframe and devote a separate chapter to each of the seventeen weeks.

Phase I: Discover the Opportunity (Week One)
Phase II: Analyze Basis of Competition (Weeks Two-Four)
Phase III: Design Material Flow (Weeks Five-Eleven)
Phase IV: Work and Information Flow Analysis and Design (Weeks Twelve-Seventeen)

Bolstorff and Rosenbaum then provide six appendices which facilitate review of the key points later: SCOR Model Overview, Fowler's Business Context Summary, Fowler's Supply Chain Improvement Project Charter, Partial List of SCOR Model Leading Practices (Sorted by Business Area), SCOR Version 5.0 Quick Reference Guide, and SCOR and Six Sigma DMAIC [i.e. Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control].

Note: Fowlers, Inc. is a billion-dollar conglomerate with worldwide leadership in three businesses: food processing, optical technology products, and business services. "Fundamental to the success is the Fowlers mission to continually exceed customer expectations. The company and its employees believe that if they go beyond what customers require, those customers will return again and again."

For me, some of the most valuable material in this book is provided in Chapter 17 (Week Fifteen) when Bolstorff and Rosenbaum explain how to determine how the given business should work by reviewing the Sample SCOR Level 3 Baseline Blueprint (see Table 16-3 on Page 181), adjusting SCOR Level Three processes between "swim lanes" (i.e. dividers used to organize and separate process steps by groups, organizations or roles; used to delineate ownership of the processes), incorporating transaction language for the specific technology application that will be used, conducting logical business transaction tests, and calculating productivity improvements based on the changes.

This is by no means an "easy read" and will be especially challenging to those who have only limited (if any) prior experience with the design and implementation of a large organization's supply chain for. Credit Bolstorff and Rosenbaum with making brilliant use of an extended case study of Fowlers. I certainly appreciated this approach because it enabled me to gain a much better understanding of how the exemplary organization navigated its way through the eight steps of the SCOR project lifecycle which begins with educating everyone within the given enterprise about supply chain improvement to gain their support and concludes with implementing whatever changes (i.e. improvements) may be necessary to achieve sustainable competitive advantage.

Those who share my high regard for this volume may also be interested in Thomas Stallkamp's SCORE! in which he explains how (then) Chrysler Motors used a proprietary goal and measurement system (Supplier Cost Reduction Effort) in the 1990s. At that time, Stallkamp was responsible for Chrysler's procurement and supply activities. "Although it took some time to get started, by 1992, the SCORE approach had been incorporated into a supply-management philosophy called the Extended Enterprise of the firm. Because their destiny and fortunes were directly linked to Chrysler's, the idea was to build a virtual team atmosphere in which all parties focused on reducing the cost of developing and producing vehicles. The construction supply-side suggestions worked to reduce both the supplier's costs and those of Chrysler." In this book, Stallkamp traces with meticulous the process by which SCORE was formulated and then implemented as a proprietary goal and measurement system.

4 out of 5 stars Supply Chain Excellence.......2007-01-11

Definitely a very good overview of the SCOR model (Supply Chain Chain Operations Reference). I have used this book as a base reference for Kaizen processes I have championed, with SCOR as a structural foundation.

My only reservation is that the book reviews how the overall process works from a project perspective without digging into the metrics. An experienced practitioner can get around this through experience and other resources however it would have been nice to have. To offset this the auther goes into the "whys" and the "whats" instead of the "hows" and does an extremely good job at his targeted subject material.

I would most definitely purchase and use this book again, and recommend it to others looking to use SCOR processes to improve their balanced scorecards.

3 out of 5 stars A good book for me as a reference.......2007-01-10

This book is available for me as a reference in my task as senior purchasing to conduct best parctical of supply chain

5 out of 5 stars The Path to Supply Chain Excellence.......2006-11-02

I highly recommend this book for any business that is in the process or is preparing for a BHAG. Peter Bolstorff provides the practitioner with detailed project roadmaps while addressing the challenges and process of change within a Supply Chain. By following the details within his book your company will increase customer satisfaction, profits and achieve excellence.

3 out of 5 stars SCOR methodology explained.......2006-05-23

This book does a decent job of explaining SCOR methodology to the novices. Please do not expect to immideately start using the SCOR model after reading this book - that needs a lot of experience and judgement. Besides the slightly dry writing style, I do not have quibbles with the style. On the content side - I do believe the title promises more that what it will deliver to most people.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars New Third Edition Updates Computer Area Significantly.......2006-08-11

The military has pioneered the concepts of logistics -- indeed napoleon was responsible for the development of canning foodstuffs to provide for his armies. As the military has gotten more complex but must still provide for everything their soldiers need, the military's development of what's now called ILS (Integrated Logistics Support) has gotten more developed. Beyond the military, various commercial ventures must also provide for logistics support. When your automobile has a problem you expect the dealer to have parts. These types of companies have developed commercial systems that are based on those of the military.

This book, now in its third edition, is based on MIL HDBK 502, Acquisition Logistics and MIL-PRF-49506 Logistics Management Information. Basically it takes the military documents and makes sense out of them for people who must implement ILS systems. The third edition updates the information on the available software-based systems, commercial off the shelf solutions and the latest DoD requirements.

Here in one volume is basically a complete introduction to ILS. It's not a small book, over 500 pages and pretty small type for older eyes like mine.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ILS reference, with potential commercial uses.......2002-05-20

My motivation for buying this book came from my extensive experience with material maintenance management during my 22 year career in the navy, and subsequent experience with integrated logistics in Department of Defense contracting. I used the first edition of this book as a reference when I was on a proposal team for a DoD contract, and found it to be one of the best references available because it distilled tens of thousands of pages of directives, instructions and related material into less than 500 pages. It covered the topic in sufficient detail as to serve as an authoritative reference as well as to get other members of the team up-to-speed in ILS.

During subsequent consulting engagements for commercial clients I used many of the concepts and methods detailed in this book to outline requirements for automated materials and maintenance management systems. In particular, any commercial business domain, such as refinery maintenance or maintenance data collection and analysis are candidates for applying parts of ILS to commercial uses. This book then becomes more valuable to a wider audience than DoD contractors.

A second use for the concepts is the structured and proven approach to an encompassing systems maintenance management initiative within IT. For example, the use of logistics support analysis is a sound approach to planning enterprise-wide maintenance from a cost management perspective. Moreover, using a modified (and shortened) form of logistics support analysis records is a good foundation for enterprise asset management, as well as developing a reliability baseline.

While this book has obvious value to readers from the DoD contracting community, it also contains information that can be tailored to commercial uses.

      5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Value.......2006-12-04

Finally a book has arrived that creates semblance and understanding to effective event marketing for companies in need. I stumbled upon Allison Saget's Event Marketing Handbook during a recent search online. I was responsible for coordinating our first major event and being a start-up company we could finally honor our founding 500 businesses for their support. The success of this event was imperative. Our congressman arrived and cut the red ribbon. Using all the templates and tools from the Event Marketing Handbook, I was congratulated by the President of the company for my insight and ability to follow through with a task, that was considered unparralled to anything else we have done thus far. I highly recommend this book for any company that wishes to create the best event EVER!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Marketing and Sales.......2006-12-01

This book is comprehensive and full of practical detail. Most importantly it provides a strategic approach for events. You'll reference this book for years.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for corporate marketing...........2006-11-18

This book is the most comprehensive resource on Event Marketing available. It clearly outlines the relationship between marketing and sales and most importantly how to shorten the sales cycle. The information and tools were invaluable. This book must be read by today's marketing professional. My entire marketing team LOVED this book and I continually recommend it to all of my industry associates. Thank you very much Ms. Saget for the insight, information and techniques. Deserves to be 10 stars.

1 out of 5 stars this book is killing me!.......2006-11-16

its the reason why i am considering never ordering books from amazon again!
i hate not being able to flip thru the book before buying it. had i had a chance to do it with this one, i would have NEVER bought it!
it is one word - dumb.
aimed at primarily sales organizations. and it reminds me of, dunno, knife salesmen and multilevel marketing events where everyone goes "yeah!!" like they're about to win a war in one decisive battle and not sell cleaning products!
it is useless for an agency person, and it has very very limited use for corporate marketing people.
i don't know WHO this book is written for.
maybe for people who have never had exposure to anything even remotely resembling marketing.
the writing style is patronizing, and at times irrelevant.
it pisses me off that paid 16 bucks plus 35% s&h on top for this piece of [...].
and what is even more disappointing is that the reviewers before me gave it all those stars.
goes to show how much one can truly trust readers' reviews.
oooh, disappointing is such a weak word..

4 out of 5 stars Practical guide to getting maximum marketing advantage from your events........2006-09-28

Event marketing is more than throwing a great party. Like any marketing endeavor, its ultimate goal is to generate sales. Author Allison Saget keeps her eye on the prize as she teaches you how to plan and execute your next event. She emphasizes that event marketing must be an integral part of your company's total marketing strategy. She covers every aspect of event marketing, including choosing an event, working with sales, crafting a message, generating leads, measuring results and rising above the competition. The book is filled with practical templates and forms she developed during her 20 years in the business. Saget's attention to detail gets a bit tedious; for example, she meticulously describes the best way to pack a suitcase, but that is easy to forgive because so much of the information is valuable. We encourage you to read this thorough handbook before you rent that tent.

        Book Description

Over the past two decades, not only has supply chain analysis become a strategic focus of leading firms, it has also spawned an impressive array of research that brings together diverse research communities. Adding to this diversity and intellectual energy is the emergence of E-Business. E-Business creates new competitive dimensions that are fast-paced, ever-changing, and risk-prone, dimensions where innovation, speed, and technological savvy often define success. Most importantly, E-Business challenges the premises and expands the scope of supply chain analysis. The Handbook is a comprehensive research reference that is essential for anyone interested in conducting research in supply chain. Unique features include:

-A focus on the intersection of quantitative supply chain analysis and E-Business,
-Unlike other edited volumes in the supply chain area, this is a handbook rather than a collection of research papers. Each chapter was written by one or more leading researchers in the area. These authors were invited on the basis of their scholarly expertise and unique insights in a particular sub-area,
-As much attention is given to looking back as to looking forward. Most chapters discuss at length future research needs and research directions from both theoretical and practical perspectives,
-Most chapters describe in detail the quantitative models used for analysis and the theoretical underpinnings; many examples and case studies are provided to demonstrate how the models and the theoretical insights are relevant to real situations,
-Coverage of most state-of-the-art business practices in supply chain management.

Audience: This volume is suitable for researchers, faculty, graduate students, and practitioners in the following areas: supply chain management, operations research, management science, decision science, industrial engineering, operations management, civil engineering/transportation, logistics management, risk management, applied mathematics, economics, computer science, industrial management, and other related areas.

Hardbound. The essays collected in this volume present a broad survey of the state of the art in logistics systems research as viewed by a distinguished group of scholars. The book shows that logistics remains an active, vibrant subject of inquiry. The reasons for this continued development are the following. Firstly, logistic systems are extremely complex with many inherent technical problems, and fundamently new approaches to the subject are frequently arising. Secondly, the practical world of logistics has changed markedly over the past few decades, posing significant new challenges to researchers. This volume focuses mainly on the key developments in the last decade.

          Book Description

Lean Supply Chain Management A Handbook for Strategic Procurement Jeffrey P. Wincel

Lean Supply Chain Management provides procurement and supplier development professionals with a powerful and profitable method for strategic procurement.

Unlike other strategic procurement guides, Lean Supply Chain Management considers an organization's "business condition" as a contributing factor in the development of a strategic procurement strategy. That is, rather than taking a "one-size fits all" approach, the authors' more individualized approach illustrates techniques specific to organizations operating in a "standard" environment or "crisis" environment. In addition, Lean Supply Chain Management is the only book that incorporates lean methodologies as the key factor in its supply chain strategies.

          Highlights include:
          · Methods for developing and tracking strategic procurement initiatives
          · Planning in the "standard" and "crisis" environment
          · Coordinating supply chain management and lean manufacturing
          · Performance measurement tools

Lean Supply Chain Management provides purchasers and supplier development professionals with the tools needed to transform procurement from a mere cost center to a profit generator.

          5 out of 5 stars A Practical Step-by-Step Approach to a Lean Supply Chain.......2006-11-23

This books provides an excellent detailed road map for taking Lean concepts to the supply chain. Many of the publications I've read summarize the success companies have had in implementing Lean concepts. This book goes well beyond that, outlining HOW to take Lean to the supply chain. The book includes a 5 phase process with step-by-step instructions for each phase.

The real "jewel" in the book is the authors discussion of companies in a "crisis environment" versus companies in a "normal environment". Lean initiatives are often initiated as a result of a company finding itself in a "crisis". These initiatives fail because Lean practictioners are unable to recognize the need, or are unable to deliver, the quick results needed in a time of crisis.

This book is a "must have" for anyone wanting to take Lean concepts to their supply chain.

5 out of 5 stars Using the book.......2004-01-08

After reading Lean Supply Chain Management, we began adopting the practices in our operations in the U.S. and in England. We immediately saw improvements that we expected would take months to achieve. Without a doubt, we will continue to implement the improvements Mr. Wincel writes about in his book.

5 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide to Collaborative Supply Chain Success!.......2004-01-06

With a `no holds barred' approach to a complex topic, Jeffrey `tells it like it is' in his first book, Lean Supply Chain Management: A Handbook For Strategic Procurement. Based upon his career as a procurement executive, he shares his thoughts and strategies in this insightful book combining theory and practical tools in an easy-to-read format. The case study interspersed throughout the book provides the real world, `tools-in-action' perspective.

With 60% to 70% of the cost of a company's manufactured product now residing within the value chain of suppliers (i.e., bought out), he champions the creation of a Chief Procurement Officer to underscore the vital contribution that purchasing makes to corporate profits.

His book's underlying theme is the collaborative approach to supply chain management - working with the suppliers to improve designs and processes, optimize costs and reduce lead times while surprising and delighting the customer. Encouraging companies to put away the big sticks when they deal with their suppliers, he provides solid advice for supply chain management in standard as well as crisis environments. He demonstrates how sound principles of lean theory and action can be coordinated with enlightened supply chain management practices to add value to bottom-line profits.

This book puts the strategic focus back into the purchasing function. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding "the complexities of a global, cross functional, cross-enterprise view of business".......2007-05-02

Here in a single volume is a wealth of information and counsel provided by many of the world's foremost authorities on global supply chain management. The material has been selected and edited with meticulous care by John T. Mentzer, Matthew B, Myers, and Theodore P. Stank who also collaborated on Chapter 1 ("Why Global Supply Chain Management?") and contributed to others. They provide this definition of Supply Chain Management (SCM) which was devised by the Supply Chain Research Group at the University of Tennessee in 2004: "the systematic, strategic coordination of the traditional business functions within a particular company and across businesses within the supply chain, for the purposes of improving the long-term performance of the individual companies and the supply chain as a whole." After the introductory chapter, the material is organized as follows:

Part I: Understanding Global Supply Chains
Overview: The contributors focus on strategy, assessment of the global environment, value and customer service management, demand management, knowledge management, and process orientation.

          Part II: Managing the Functions
Overview: The contributors focus on management of marketing and sales, product, operations, integrated logistics, inventory, transportation, warehouse, and personnel.

          Part III: Resource Management
Overview: The contributors focus on the lean supply chain ("The path to Excellence"), financial and risk management, and interpretation systems (i.e. knowledge, strategy, and performance).

          Part IV: Managing the Relations
Overview: The contributors focus on relationship management, logistics outsourcing, international sourcing (i.e. "redressing the balance"), negotiating throughout the supply chain, interfunctional coordination, intercorporate coordination, and global supply chain control.

          Part V: Making It Happen
Overview: The contributors focus on supply chain innovation, global supply chain security, diagnosing the supply chain, and change management.

Mentzer, Myers, and Stank conclude from the previously provided definition of SCM that it is "a management process that deals with inbound and outbound flows, from the perspective of the focal organization, its suppliers, and its customers. This means a fundamental aspect of GSCM [i.e. Global Supply Chain Management] is the consideration of not just the cost and the profit goals of one company (the focal

In this volume, Mentzer, Myers, Stank, and their associates make a substantial contribution to the evolution of thought processes that lead to a wider and deeper understanding of "the complexities of a global, cross functional, cross-enterprise view of business and fosters an appreciation of key dimensions that contribute to success within this new environment." For senior-level executives in companies that are now involved in a GSCM or are now considering such an involvement, this book is a "must read." That is not to say that it is an easy read. However, for those who absorb and digest the material with appropriate care, it will be - and remain - an indispensable source of information and counsel.

5 out of 5 stars A critical acquisition for any serious college-level collection.......2006-12-11

The Handbook of Global Supply Chain Management is no light reference, but a solid pick for college-level libraries strong in holdings pertaining to global supply chains. It identifies emerging developments and compares and contrasts them with past GSCM methods, analyzes chains, functions, resources and techniques for making it happen, and uses contributors from professions around the world, both in academic and private business circles. It's this attention to well-rounded detail and depth from different approaches which makes The Handbook of Global Supply Chain Management a critical acquisition for any serious college-level collection offering grad students and researchers detailed perspectives on the subject.
