Book Description
Second Edition, Expanded to Include Fresh Insights and Practical Tools For New and Experienced Managers
No book has captured the trials and traumas of the transition from star performer to competent manager better than Linda Hill's classic Becoming a Manager. In tracing and analyzing the experiences of nineteen new managers, Hill reveals the profound complexity and difficulty of the process of developing into a manager. In their own distinct voices, these managers describe how they reframed their understanding of their roles and responsibilities and how they coped with the stresses and emotions of the transformation-in essence, how they were able to take on new identities. Now, in a substantially expanded second edition, the author offers concrete advice on the crucial issues of dealing effectively with organizational politics and developing and leading diverse teams in times of change, as well as on how managers can prepare themselves to lead over the course of their careers. In a new epilogue, she explores what organizations can do to help managers in their journey to lead and learn.

Good - Only for sales and Financial Managers .......2006-11-20
The book is well written but lacks in breadth of manager case studies. So much of the book is written toward financial institution managers that it has little applicability to managerial positions in manufacturing, engineering, or other disciplines that don't involve motivating people to meet their sales quotas.
Insightful Book.......2006-06-28
I found this book insightful and validating. I transitioned from being a healthcare professional to a manager of a clinic. Despite the difference in practice areas between this book and my own career (sales vs. healthcare), I still found the findings in the book to be important. Whether you're transitioning to manager from a position of top performer in terms of money or in terms of some other measure of achievement (such as quality of patient care or number of new innovations, for example), the lessons of this book still apply. I highly recommend this book to new managers and to THEIR managers.
A must-read for managers (new or old).......2005-01-02
I highly recommend this to anyone involved in "management", particularly where you have to lead people.
The value of this book -- to me -- was not that it revealed anything new (most managers would instinctively know what the issues are when working with a team). What it did for me was to give me assurance that the trials and tribulations that I've gone through (some of which are daily occurances) are normal. That told me that I AM NOT ALONE! -- for management is a lonely business.
This book took me sometime to finish (440 over pages) but a very readable book. Not overly academic. I particularly liked the section on "Is Management Really for Me?".
An absolute must read!.......2003-08-12
Anyone interested in management or professional development should read this book. I can't tell you how many times I wondered why steller sales people made such terrible managers. Other valuable topics such as working with your peers, managing your Manager and Leadership are also addressed.
Even if you are already a Manager, this book is definately and eye opener.
Very helpful indeed!.......2003-03-06
It's simply a must read for anyone considering to pursue a career in management. Learn from others experience!
Book Description
It's been featured in the nation's business press as the next wave in management. It's being discussed, debated, and acclaimed in conferences and executive suites around the world. It's The Unwritten Rules of the Game, and here is the pathbreaking book that introduces this unique new approach to mastering corporate change. What drives day-to-day behavior in an organization? As Arthur D. Little consultant Peter Scott-Morgan has discovered, the silent engines are not official policies but unwritten rules. Deciphering those rules is the essential step in managing change-the number 1 item on just about every corporate agenda these days-because the process unfailingly reveals why people are simply unwilling to alter their behavior.

ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOANALYSIS.......2001-11-10
The rules discussed in this work are the informal mores and values that contribute to organizational culture and which can interefere with policy implementation from above. The concept is original, as is the framework of Strategy, Process, Resources and Organization in the context of which the analysis (and presumably management consulting) is performed. Beyond these two ideas the book suffers from a variety of flaws.
The language is stilted and regimented into an outline, which prevents a free flowing narrative that would be more appropriate to a case study method. Very little underlying theory is given for the concepts, but more importantly, for the methodology of identifying informal culture in an organization. The author presents many examples, but very little reason as to why and what he is doing.
His section on conducting an interview is almost a textbook example of the non-directed interview technique from psychology, and rather than concentrating on which questions to ask and what to look for, he instead gives us the amount of hours details of the brainstorming ritual that his consulting company performs.
The language of the book is unprofessional and it steers away from scientific terminology; the book is written in short soundbites and that contributes to the pop management feel of the whole work. The examples of the informal mores are generic and appear similar across his cases - job hop, keep your boss happy, protect your own turf, and yet the author fails to give any observations on this being the weakeness of the corporate exec culture as a whole. He mentions Machiavelianism, but at the same time fails to address corporate politics with any degree of satisfaction. I am not sure if this is a poorly written memoir of the man's professional career or if this is a marketing ploy for his consultancy.
Usefull theory, fairly slow explanation.......1997-09-08
I very much liked the book, mostly because it lead me into a "new world", the world of the unwritten rules (and our behaviour based on them).
I think the theory helps me get insight in every day life and the management of change. I do think I will be a more effective change manager when using the "unwritten rules approach".
I now try to use it in my projects.

Awesome book.......2007-09-06
This book has been reviewed in detail enough. I can only add my own personal experience. Seibert wrote a simple concise book that pulls no punches and provides an effective plan to help change one's mindset from that of a depressed anxious victim to that of a person who dosen't let things control how they feel without putting up a heck of a fight first.
The Resiliency Advantage.......2007-01-12
After a challenging year in which I have dealt with injury, financial devastation, and diabolical bureaucracy, it was great to be reminded, once again, that the reason I have thrived is largely because I exhibit 100% of the personality traits of a 'survivor'! The exercises included in this book are brilliant and I have recommended the book to many people, including my rehabilitation physician - who has thoroughly enjoyed my approach to everything but is still trying to figure me out! Should be required reading for all high school students and for anyone who is serious about tapping into real human potential. Thanks Al !
Useful.......2007-01-11
This book is very useful for everyone. After all, each of us meets with many challenges everyday.
A practical book the provides valuable tools for confronting life's difficult challenges!!!.......2006-12-30
+++++
Self-rate yourself on a scale from 1 (meaning little agreement) to 5 (meaning strongly agree) on the following ten items:
(1) In a crisis or chaotic situation, I calm myself and focus on taking useful actions.
(2) I'm usually optimistic, seeing difficulties as temporary and believe things will eventually turn out well.
(3) I can tolerate high levels of uncertainty and ambiguity.
(4) I'm good at bouncing back from difficulties and quickly adapt to new developments.
(5) I'm self-confident and have a healthy concept of who I am.
(6) I prefer to work without a written job description since I'm more effective when I'm free to do what I think is best in each situation.
(7) I trust my intuition and "read" people well.
(8) I'm a good listener and have good empathy skills.
(9) I've been made stronger and better by difficult experiences.
(10) I've converted misfortune into good luck and even found benefits in bad experiences.
A low score of (under 25) means your resiliency skills are weak and you would greatly benefit from this amazing, easy-to-read, psychobabble-free book by Dr. Al Siebert, a clinical psychologist and Director of "The Resiliency Center". (`Resiliency' means (i) coping well with ongoing negative change (ii) sustaining good health and energy under constant pressure (iii) bouncing back from setbacks and adversities (iv) changing to a new way of living and working when an old way no longer works (v) and doing all this without acting in harmful ways.)
A middle score of (25 to 45) means your resiliency skills are adequate but probably can be greatly enhanced by using this book.
A high score of (over 45) means you have good resiliency skills and this book will validate many things you are doing right.
This book in a nutshell presents five resiliency "levels" or skills (level four is divided into 4 sub-levels while level 5 is divided into 3 sub-levels) so, in affect, the reader is presented with ten essential resiliency skills that Siebert has distilled from "the emerging new science of resiliency psychology." This book, besides other important things, shows you how to:
(1) Sustain strong, healthy energy in non-stop pressure and change
(2) Bounce back quickly from setbacks
(3) Gain strength from adversities
(4) Convert misfortune into good fortune
(5) Overcome tendencies to feel like a victim, and stay detached from victim reactions of others
(6) Overcome the three main resiliency barriers.
Who is this book written for? Siebert explains: "The resiliency guidelines in this book focus mainly on resiliency in the workplace, but they apply broadly to all aspects of life." (Actually, I think Siebert is being too restrictive in saying that these principles "focus mainly on resiliency in the workplace." Personally, I think these principles are essential to know so as to effectively play the game of life.)
What will this book NOT tell you? It "will not tell you what to do or how to act or think...Resilient people are those who decide that somehow, some way, they will do the very best they can to survive, cope, and make things turn out well." This book helps you develop your own unique way of being resilient by being both self-reliant and socially responsible.
As a physically disabled person, my personal favorite chapter was entitled "Mastering Extreme Resiliency Challenges." Included here are true stories from 9/11 survivors. I feel Siebert outdoes himself in this penultimate chapter.
Finally, this book has some key features. Important definitions, exercises, and other important and essential information are isolated from the main narrative as inserts so as to highlight key ideas. Each chapter is broken up into sections with anecdotes, examples, and true stories instead of having one long narrative. At the end of each chapter are insightful "Resiliency Development Activities" that help you utilize and think about the information from each chapter.
In conclusion, this is truly a helpful and unique book. Discover for yourself why this book was named the winner of the 2006 Independent Publisher Book Awards in the "Self Help" category at BookExpo America (the largest book publishing event in the United States) and why it was endorsed by the past president of the American Psychological Association!!

A Review from PMH Atwater, L.H.D., Ph.D. (Hon.).......2006-11-10
This book is all that it says it is, a veritable how-to in handling today's pressure and challenges, and doing it in a way that enhances your life while enabling you to dissolve much of the stress that tends to cripple. It is a book for the "right now" of life, specific suggestions for specific situations, lots of stories, ideas, even "resiliency development activites"at the close of each chapter. What peaked my attention, though, were the chapters from nine on, covering things like "Integrating Your Paradoxical Abilities," "Allowing Everything to Work Well - The Synergy Talent," "Strengthening Your Talent for Serendipity," "Mastering Extreme Resiliency Challenges," and "Our Transformational Breakthrough." Here Dr. Siebert is addressing, among others, those people who have had a near-death experience or a similar type of impactual transformation of consciousness. And what he has to offer is most incredible, real help for those who may need it or who can use a friendly nudge in the process of integrating such experiences. Recommended reading. --From Dr PMH Atwater [...]

Excellent for executives below C level.......2004-08-26
This book is full of information and negotiating strategies that are very useful for more junior executives, where hiring an employment attorney is probably not necessary. It enables you to do a decent job of getting the most you can without going over the line. It is especially good at giving practical examples that can help you make tradeoffs that create win-win outcomes (most negotiating books have this concept but are too abstract). Finally, it is very helpful in making sure you are protected if things don't work out. I bought some of the other recommended books in this category, but they are much too basic if you are an executive.
Its worth the money.......2004-05-18
I bought this book recently when I was changing my job. I was desperate to take the new job and would have taken the job even without negotiation. This book provided me the strategies to increase my salary by almost 10%. The book has several good examples ( that fit very well atleast to my situation ).
A must read even if you are not changing jobs.
Excellent book on negotiating.......2003-02-11
Excellent book - The author's approach is very logical and he clearly has the experience to validate his comments. He uses sound principles, excellent examples and memorable quotes. I would definately recommend this book - an excellent book which is hard to put down.
This is a great read!.......2002-11-16
I actually took Prof. Miller for a course in negotiating and he was excellent. If you're not lucky enough to get to see him in person, read this book. He was on the management side and knows what they're thinking. If you incorporate some of these techniques in negotiating your next salary you will come out ahead. Also, most of these techniques can be applied to any negotiation. Read it, you will not be disappointed.
Practical and useful guide.......2002-04-07
Great book. This book covered everything I needed to know to get a great salary and perks that I would not have thought to ask for. It was very readable and the advice was easy to use. I would recommend this book to anyone changing jobs.

History is sometimes made by seemingly insignificant moments that turn out to have been pivotal in hindsight--and sometimes what didn't happen proves to be as important as what did. One such moment came in the Florentine court of Cesare Borgia, when a civil servant named Niccolò Machiavelli recruited a local engineer named Leonardo da Vinci to devise a plan to change the course of the Arno River. Diverting that river, Machiavelli reasoned, would deprive Florence's enemy, the nearby city-state of Pisa, of a dependable water supply. It would also make the Arno River navigable for oceangoing vessels from the inland city of Florence, and as an added incentive, would help limit damage caused by the flood-prone Arno to the surrounding farmlands.
Machiavelli and da Vinci devised a hydrological plan for the river that was extraordinarily promising, at least on paper. The flood-prone Arno, however, made the task an impossible challenge. The pair's chances of success were further reduced by poor design, bad timing, and undisciplined workers. Their failure brought official disfavor on Machiavelli and da Vinci alike. Leonardo transferred his studio to Milan and then Rome, where he would produce remarkable work, while Machiavelli retreated from public life for a time and used his forced leisure to write The Prince. Roger Masters crafts an epic tale out of a historical footnote. Although some of his conclusions are speculative in regards to Niccolò's and Leonardo's relationship, readers will likely find his narrative persuasive and deeply informed.
Book Description
Few people know that Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolò Machiavelli crossed paths when Leonardo worked -- ostensibly as an engineer, possibly as a spy -- in Cesare Borgia's court and Machiavelli was Florence's ambassador there. Soon thereafter, they formed a friendship and an alliance. Astonishingly, during the rich first decade of the sixteenth century, the pair joined together under the inspiration of one of Leonardo's most fantastic dreams: to build a system of canals that would make the Arno River navigable from Florence to the sea. Under Machiavelli's supervision, the Florentine government tried -- and ultimately failed -- to realize a portion of this plan in 1504.
The first canal in the scheme had a military purpose, to cut off the water supply of Pisa, Florence's enemy -- but that was only the beginning. Leonardo dreamed of irrigating the Arno valley and controlling its water in order to fill Florence's coffers with tax revenues. He and Machiavelli foresaw the day that Amerigo Vespucci and other explorers would be able to sail from the city center to the sea, to travel over new lands and enrich Florentine merchants. Had the taming of the Arno succeeded, Florence might have become the center of a great world power. Unfortunately, in one of history's most tantalizing might-have-beens, the plans for the Pisa diversion were altered by the engineer in charge, not enough workmen were hired, and the ditches were not dug deeply enough. Not long after a sudden flood destroyed some of the work, the project was abandoned.
It was one of a series of failures for Leonardo, who ultimately would depart Florence for Milan, Rome, and France, newly convinced that political power was essential for an engineer and artist to thrive. For Machiavelli it was another military failure in a roller-coaster political career. If the project had materialized, the Republic might never have been overthrown, and Machiavelli might not have fallen from power and been imprisoned.
Roger Masters's account of the friendship between two of history's greatest geniuses starts with this tale of a magnificent lost dream and spirals outward to the art, politics, intrigue, and sexual scandals of Florence. Leonardo's preoccupation with the Arno project explains many of the tantalizing mysteries of his work. It is the reason for the startling bird's-eye view of the valley in the background of the Mona Lisa; it is part and parcel of both his obsession, in the Notebooks, with understanding the dynamics of water, and his work on canals and swamp drainage in Milan, Rome, and France. As for Machiavelli, were it not for his time spent in prison, he might never have been compelled to write The Prince. Fortune Is a River is at once a study of genius and a rich and delightful introduction to the wonders of the Renaissance.

Three Fascinating Figures........2006-08-12
Da Vinci, Borgia, and Machiavelli. Could there be more different and yet fascinating people? This book has some rich details, but came across more as a lecture than a true history. Its focus is on the joint attempt to divert the Arno river away from Florence's rival Pisa. The colorful complexities of life in Renaissance Italy was the main appeal. The author gives the reader a visual show of a turbulent and fascinating era.
A Renaissance Development Project.......2005-11-27
The archives of Western nations and modern ex-colonies are littered with records of utopian development schemes. Roger Masters shows that Renaissance Florence was truly modern, at least in its ability to devise idealistic projects designed to address political and environmental problems. From 1503-06 Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolo Machiavelli had a mutual interest in changing the course of the Arno River to marginalize rival Pisa, reduce the hazards of periodic flooding and ensure Florentine economic dominance of Tuscany. This visionary scheme was problematic, perhaps hare-brained, because the Florentine Republic lacked the technology, manpower and financing to successfully divert a major river. The author fails to prove the collaboration of Leonardo and Machiavelli due to scanty sources; his arguments from negative evidence are plausible but not fully convincing. But he accomplishes the more modest goal of demonstrating convergence of their interests and outlook. Masters breaks new ground in bringing together some disparate but very important issues in early modern Italy, and the story itself is always engaging, at times scintillating. In showing two leading geniuses and their familiar city in an unexpected light, the Italian Renaissance once again appears fresh and exciting.
What could have been if the Arno river was tamed!.......2004-10-15
This book has an interesting theme and is an original subject. I am notat all sure what Masters writes is true, since this history is very long ago, and the sources are not there. It seems probable that Machiavelli met and knew DaVinci. It seems clear that DaVinci tried to use the Arno initially to cut off the water for Pisa, and later to improve the commercial position of Florence and the city's boss Borgia. The book does show how DaVinci was ahead of his time in trying to damm and control a river.
This book drags at time and has lots of related material thrown in. I did learn a little more about the characters of Borgia, DaVinci, and Machiavelli. An alright read.
Fascinating study of little known details.......2004-09-20
This book is a fascinating study of some little known historical events. Even to those who have taken a keen interest in the life of Leonardo and/or Macchiavelli, there is plenty of obscure information to add to your body of knowledge. That is the main attraction of the book (apart from recounting its main event, the planned canal, of course), that it lingers over facts that other biographies largely ignore.
The anecdotes, trivial though some may think them, were a big bonus in my view - source material that is otherwise very hard to come by.
As icing to the cake, it is nicely written thus making it a pleasant read - a real page turner actually!
A fascinating collaboration.......2004-04-29
I have for some time been interested in the relationships between Leonardo Da Vinci, Machiavelli and Ceasare Borgia, and this work brings those characters to life in an enlightening and interesting interpretation of an historical event that resulted in a monumental failure. It illustrates the human side to genius and is a fascinating look at the politics of Florence and surrounding environs during the early 16th century. It is considerably more fun to read than most history books I have encountered. Thank you Dr. Masters.

Roadblocks and Enablers of Organizational Change.......2001-05-05
_The Change Masters_ was written in 1983, and since that time organizations have become much more focused on issues of transformation, but I think employees of most companies will still recognize their organizations in these pages-- and not necessarily in the positive ways.
This book was written in aid of waking the entrepreneurial spirit of the employees of large corporations and looks closely at the ways that this can be either stifled or made possible.
Clearly written from a wealth of experience, Kanter draws on case studies of companies for whom she has worked. That experience is further supported by citations from academic research and a great deal of very strong analytical thought.
Brings several important themes together.......2000-04-09
This book was meaningful to me because it documents the relationship between an open organizational environment, individual employee productivity, and innovation.
Review of organisational structure and innovation........1999-01-20
If you've ever wondered what's wrong in the organisation you work for, why results are poor, why departments can't work together, why the best people keep leaving and why the rest feel helpless and miserable; this is the book for you. It's an academic text and the author draws strongly from her own research in several different organisations, some of whom she cannot name so gives them her own names - have fun guessing who they are. Of particular value is the section on roadblocks to managerial innovation, or how to prevent organisational success. A definite gift for your boss, but first erase all your comments like "that's us!" or "we do that!" because there will be plenty.

"A Modern Day Masterpiece".......2006-01-10
There are probably hundreds of books in circulation which touch on this topic which are out of date and filled with down right ridiculous "1965" paper trip, "land you in jail" theories and practices. I am pleased to report that this book is absolutely brilliant from start to finish, mainly because it takes a modern skew on the subject and takes into account the country AT PRESENT. There are a few tricks in here which must be classics, but logically will still work taking advantage of loopholes in the country's ID creation/ verification systems. Rarely have I found a simpler, more practical and real world guide to this type of sensitive and heavily sought information. A must read for creative, highly imaginative thinkers who want to add fuel to an ever growing fire of knowledge on the subject, or novices who need to wet their proverbial feet in the mindset of the pros. The best part is this book was written after 9/11 (post fascist America), a huge plus in the book of this tripper. Takes you on a concise, almost comically simple journey through the fog of "terrorist minded government" America and the identity question within. 6 stars and a bunch of kudos from this camper.
Helpful but not comprehensive.......2005-02-18
While the author is clearly knowledgeable, this is not a comprehensive book on identity change. In fact, early on the author refers you to several other books of his as necessary foundation material. He makes getting a new Social Security number sound relatively easy, but a perusal of the SSA website shows that it takes years to build up the necessary documentation; and doing so can have nasty consequences as the new number has no credit history--thus no bank, credit card company, landlord, or employer will deal with you. Of course, this may be of secondary importance to one with a need to change identity.
Insider secrets that it helps to know........2004-03-24
This book helps you understand exactly how identification works. It describes the weak links in the chain of paper trails and how they might be exploited, that's true. On another level though, it can help you fix problems that might exist with your own identification. What if you were born at home to hippie parents who never made sure you got any kind of birth certificate or any other documentation at all? You exist in a kind of no man's land. What if you recognize that there are times you have to give out some kind of number for identification, but you don't want your SS number out there for all the world to see. Who knew there was an alternative? There are so many little tips in here...and sometimes you just wanna know how things work. The publisher Loompanics sends out the same day you order from 8003802230 or their site.

As a Change Master, trained to implement change with Jeannene LaMarsh's techniques, I find this book essential to remind me of ideas, concepts, techniques, definitions, tools. It is a good read, but an even better reference book. I love the index and the pages where tools are laid side by side with the reading material showing where they should be used.
A valuable reference.......2004-04-12
Engaging read, with interesting and inviting language. For novices a plain English starters guide. For experienced change agents a painless, even pleasant, way to continuously remind your self of the high spots
A comprehensive primer in change management.......2004-03-20
As a professional practitioner of change management, I feel certain that this book will further enhance my understanding of the human side of change, and make me a better consultant. From identifying the factors that drive change, to understanding the roles we play in change, to identifying and mitigating resistance to change, (and so much more) this book is a comprehensive primer in change management. "Master Change, Maximize Success" is an engaging read, and a visually stimulating book that offers powerful philosophies and techniques for surviving in a world that is changing at an unprecedented pace.
Easy read, great graphics, profound messages!.......2004-03-15
This book takes the mystery out of managing change. The ideas are very practical and intuitive, and presented in an easy to read, fun fashion. I got through it very quickly. The colorful graphics made it even more interesting. This material can be used to manage organizational or personal change. Very helpful!
Master Change, Maximize Success.......2004-03-08
Finnaly, a "how to" book written in common sense style. The message of this book is clear, concise, and cogent. Change without proper planning, clear vision, and direct sponsorship is the formula for chaos, at best. This is a work that belongs on the shelf - no, desktop of anyone who is charged with managing people, processes, or the business culture within any corporation. The examples clearly indicate the generic nature of the change elements, regardless of level on a chart or position on the management cascade. I highly recommend this work at both the theoretical level and as a guideline for any business process improvement department.
