A Good Primer.......2007-09-30
This book provides good practical advice for buying or leasing a car. It is clear and easy to understand and takes all the mystery out of the process. I also learned about my own motivations for buying a new car and how car stores are ready to separate me from my money. The book, however, is a couple of years out of date. It's not critical but more up to date data and more info available on the internet should in my opinion be included. The techniques offered for saving money are sound.
Car buying without the headache........2007-08-19
The "fax attack" method for purchasing a new car is genius. I not only got my 2007 Honda Civic for the least expensive price out of the 18 dealerships I faxed in Illinois (darn near the whole state, excluding some northern Chicagoland dealers), but I was able to sleep at night. Not ONCE did I wonder, "could I have gotten this at a lower price?" because I knew for a FACT that the price I got was not only the lowest at that time for that model, but was also fair. Ever get burned by a dealership? (Don't lie, everyone has, even if it was just a waste of time.) Well, buy this book, study it well, and you won't get burned again.
Better than other two books, I used it step-by-step to save at least a $1000.......2007-07-29
I always felt intimidated in buying a car, so I bought this book with Edmund's Smart Car Buyer and Bob Elliston's What Car Dealers won't tell you to educate myself. This book was definitely the most useful. While I like the "Confessions of a Car Salesman" last chapter of the Edmund's book to get incite on the day to day of selling cars, this book had more context about automobile sales market and more practical tips on buying and selling a car while getting the best price. Chapter 19 on the "fax attack" was a step by step guide on how to get the lowest price possible (it would probably work just as well with email to these days.) I did exactly what it said and bought my car (2007 RAV4) for $900 below invoice after 15 competing dealers balked at the best bid. Gave me great peace of mind that I got best deal possible and really handled all the particulars of each step of the process.
Valuable information.......2007-01-11
This book is a 'must-have' for anybody considering buying a new car. Even buyers of used cars will benefit from the information in this book. William Bragg certainly helps levelling the playing field when we have to confront a car salesman.
What an eye-opener!.......2006-06-06
Given I hold on to my cars for an average of 8 years, and I am not by nature comfortable with the entire bartering process, I really dread buying a new car...doing the purchase takes all the joy out of it for me.
But, this book provides SO much helpful information in such an easy-to-read format, that I breezed through it enthusiastically in just a couple hours and felt much more comfortable about what I'm up against...
The "fax attack" is a GREAT tool for anyone with the time and patience to do it. For me, it's too much like my day job. :-) BUT...luckily, for people like me, Mr. Bragg outlines another option: carbargains.org - a non-profit buying service that will get five dealers in your area to compete against each other to sell you the car you want. Yes, you pay a fee to them, but I believe it would be very much worth it not only for the savings they get you, but the hassle saved. Kind of like paying someone to do my taxes...
I can't recommend this book highly enough! Even if I choose to take the easy way out, the knowledge I gained was invaluable!

How to be a savvy car shopper- brilliant behind the scenes of how a dealership operates!!.......2005-11-01
It's a MUST read. All car shoppers as well as anyone facing a purchasing negotiation can benefit from this book. It offers precise tips on how to avoid common pitfalls and get the best deal possible in any car purchase or lease situation. It's also a great read and a facinating tour of how a car dealership operates. It took us forever to decide whether to buy or lease until we read this book!
A God send for a car buying rookie.......2005-05-29
I have to confess that I am someone who managed to get through the first 20 years or so of adulthood without ever having bought a car. But now that I may have to bite the bullet, I found this book indispensable. I never realized that buying a car can be such a minefield and that there so many things that a prospective buyers needs to be aware of. I thought that this book gave me some very clear principles to use when approaching a show room. I particularly liked the advice about getting financing at your own financial institution instead of falling for the financing deals that the dealerships will try to offer. I also liked the authors point about NOT trying to understand the dealer and his or her perspective - that is probably the first mistake I would have made had I not read this book. The book is written with a very witty style and I found that once I started reading I couldn't put it down and read practically all of it in one sitting!
FINALLY...THE ONE!!!.......2005-05-17
I have been buying new cars for over 40 years, and finally, after not knowing whether I was paying too much or not, I got hold of this book, and everything changed for me. Just by following the eight commandments, which are easy and straightforward, I'm finding car buying can happen without hassle or mystery, and by using the web sites listed in the appendix, I know where to look up everything I could possibly need. Finally, I feel in control, and so much more confident that I'm not spending too much money. The stories communicate how important the commandments really are. Besides being a wise investment, this book is fun to read.
Indispensible Guide.......2005-04-20
With much anxiety, I was in the market for my first new car. Using the Car Buyer's Bible's easy to use commandments, I was able to negotiate a price $500 below invoice for a 2005 Subaru Outback XT2.5 Limited! I am so pleased with this purchase!
Segal thoroughly describes the mindset of the car salesman and strategies for working with them (don't forget to bring a notebook to the dealer!). I successfully dealt with 2 different Subaru salesmen at 2 different dealerships, an ethical one and a confirmed liar (revealed by my trusty notebook!). Guess who I bought from?
This book will save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, not to mention provide you with the long lasting satisfaction of NOT GETTING RIPPED OFF!!
Why didn't I have this before.......2005-04-19
I wish I had had this book in my hands when I walked into the showroom to buy my last car! For some reason, independent, self assured professional woman that I am, I wound up somewhat timid/intimdated at the dealership.
I had followed commandments two and three on finance and model. Yes, I had purchased Car and Driver and Road and Track and surfed the web. I was downright excited about the car I wanted. Then, I might as well have been going to the dentist.
Commandmants 5, 7 and 8 are key. Number Seven was humbling. As a former senior negotiator for the US government, I should have known better.
Highly readable - laugh out loud - at moments. The perfect Mothers/Fathers Day or Graduation gift.

Took me by surprise!.......2003-11-13
I was recently given a copy of this book for my birthday. At first glance I thought oh, great, another book I'll never look at, but then started leafing through it. It's packed with information on things my husband and I have been recently shopping around for, like a digital camcorder and a new lawnmower. There are loads of tips on how to make the most of your money and things to watch out for. But there's also stuff I never thought of: Hire a body guard, buy bonds, sell your body to science, buy a hourse trailer, sell a used bike?-and it's funny! My husband paws through it before he goes to Home Depot to get a good read on just about everything he needs. There'll be a lot of people getting this book for Christmas.

Customer Reviews:
LIfe Changing.......2004-07-11
I was very impressed by the way of writing and the contents of the book. I liked how Peter first starts with developing the right negotiating mindset. I personally believe that this is very important. I must tell you that I have never considered negotiating in a shop for example as something decent. Now
it is a different ball game for me. I can't not think of a way to reduce the price in a shop I go. I totally changed. I am inspired and burn from desire for my next big purchase to do. The book is full and very complete I think. All the tactics are extremely useful and it even surprised me at the end
where Peter includes things like Employee and Retail discounts.
Reading the examples on the different tactics I wished there were counteract on the counteract of using the strategies. I don't know if this is possible, but would have been very useful for me.
I must say it is a great book and I have already recommended it to some of my fellow investors in our property investment club. We give specific attention to negotiations and I thing this book is one of the 'must reads'.
This book forms an important part in my wealth library.
Thank you Peter.
Awesome Book.......2004-07-11
I don't usually recommend books but I think this book is awesome. I have put some of Peter's negotiating techniques in action and they work. I found the book not only informative but also interesting and doable. The execises were very helpful and certainly help to create the negotiating mindset that Peter talks about.
Make sure and read each chapter over until Peter's teachings are fully understood and make sure and do the exercises.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to win in the negotiating process. Can't wait to read his next book.
Book is Great.......2004-07-11
I read this book and think it's not only written well but extremely informative. I think Peter teaches people how to use negotiating techniques in a format that everyone can understand and put to use in everyday life. He covers every area.
Additionally I especially like how he tells you what to avoid in both personal and business deals.
I highly recommend this book and have read it several times. When you purchase it read it a few times and be sure to complete the exercises in the book as they are very helpful.
Obnoxious style, too anecdotal, nothing new.......2004-07-06
This books starts (or rather finishes) with a false claim. The back cover: &is unlike any negotiating book you(...)ve ever read. This book not only covers business negotiations, it also teaches you how to get deals on everyday personal purchases.(...)P>Problem #1: How does the author know what negotiating books I ve read? Problem #2: Many books cover both business and personal life negotiations.
Every review is a personal affair. You either connect with the author or you dont. I didnt. You either like his style or you dont. I dont. He comes along as cocksure, obnoxious little car salesman or a sleek guy who runs Get rich quickly by investing in my companys property schemes seminars. Now, he may be a nice, decent, hardworking guy, and he probably is. But that is not the way he comes across to me in his book.
There are millions Always do this & and Never do that& pieces of advice in this book. Too simplistic, and in some case downright dangerous advice! Such as Always squeeze everything you can out of every deal. Life is not Black and White and squeezing does not a good negotiator make!
Many times the author introduces a concept (such as red herring) and simply says youll learn about that in chapter 12. That is not only unsound methodologically and pedagogically, but annoying to readers.
There is 1 (one) single illustration in this book, a flow chart of some sort, claiming to be a process model of communication and negotiation. It is a very poor and incorrect model indeed. Anybody who understands process flow-charting and negotiation would never accept this as a model of negotiation. Plus communication and negotiation are very different processes and cannot be represented by the same flowchart! It is like saying that kissing and sex are the same. Kissing may be part of sex (just as communication is one aspect of negotiation) but it is NOT sex!
In conclusion, avoid like a plague (this book, not sex)!
Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-05-08
If you have participated in negotiations before, you'll know how to decide what sections of the plentiful advice here apply to your needs. From the most basic and self-evident advice (get it in writing) to the psychological (stay friendly) to the more sophisticated (be aware of your opponent's culture), author Peter Wink tries to cover a variety of negotiating situations and tactics. His suggestions vary from hardball (turn up the heat and use uncomfortable chairs), which may be difficult to implement, to puffball (walk away smiling), depending on what your opponent throws at you. And if he sounds a little paranoid when describing negotiations that went wrong, take his experiences as a cautionary warning. If you need to do a better job of getting what you want, we recommend this useful guide. Much of its advice will be helpful and applicable - just think like a negotiator and chose wisely.

Book Description
This book analyzes consumer organizing tactics and the decline of the Seattle labor movement in the 1920s, as a case study of the U.S. labor movement in the 1920s. The book examines the transformation of the movement after the famous Seattle General Strike of 1919 by showing that workers organized not only at the point of production, but through politicized consumption as well, employing boycotts, cooperatives, labor-owned businesses, and union label promotion. It pays special attention to the gender dynamics of labor's consumer campaigns, as trade union men sought to persuade their wives to "shop union," and to the racial dynamics of campaigns organized by white workers against Seattle's Japanese-American businesses.
