Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mentor Manager, Mentor Parent.......2004-07-18

Overall, the book is an easy, good read for anyone interested in improving their communication skills and relationships in general, both at home and in the work place. The authors provide a revealing self-test at the start of the book as well as worksheets throughout. (Hint, hold onto your answers from the self-test as you will use them throughout the other chapters in the book)!
The authors describe four control styles or personality types. Don't be surprised if your style at home and at work differ. Once you know your style, you can glean the advice and suggestions that apply to you personally. The book does not speak condescendingly to any particular group, in fact, it is as the title suggests, in mentors and encourages and even provides worksheets for practice (pssst....no one has to see your worksheets but you)!
It will help to reveal your strengths and weaknesses and better equip you to resolve conflict both on a personal and professional level. Of course, taking into consideration the emotions and values of both parties involved in the communication process. Whether intended or not, it seems as though the underlying principle involved is the value of each person as an individual, their beliefs and their emotions. We have no control over the emotions as they arise, but we do to some degree have control as to how we deal with them and how we deal with our emotions affects others.
Although the authors coin the term "control style," the book does not promote controlling behavior in a negative sense. Rather, it promotes a mentoring behavior that preserves the relationship, nurturing the relationship and the individual.
The book takes you from the place of identifying your values and relating them to the child or employee. Once that has been established, you eventually work up to the point of letting go. The passing of ownership of choices, decisions and responsiblity of actions to the child or employee, whatever the case may be. That is the goal of the book, to produce responsible, self-directed persons while preserving your relationship in the process.
Overall, I liked the book and the motivational style in which it was written. If I had any dislikes, it would have been some of the real life scenario's and the seemingly perfect endings. One begins to think, this is too good to be true. But those thoughts are quickly diminished as you read further along in the book to find that not every scenario is a win-win.
I would recommend this book for personal and professional use. It is not often you find a book with universal principles that can be applied to all aspects of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2002-10-10

Combines management tips with proven parenting advice that I can use at home and at work.

5 out of 5 stars Must-read for women who desire to live God-honoring lives.......2000-07-15

Mrs. Hunt addresses the subject of biblical mentoring with passion and grace. This book is not merely a "how-to", but provides a strong foundation for loving relationships between women, with God's glory being the chief end and highest goal of such relationships.

5 out of 5 stars Inspires you both to seek and offer spiritual mothering.......2000-06-12

The command in Titus 2 for older women to teach younger women has long been on my heart and I have desired to reach out beyond my own daughters, but have not often had the opportunity to develop such a relationship with others. I wish older women had reached out to me when I was younger and did not realize how much I needed their help and encouragement. This book is great for women of all ages. It encourages the younger to seek the wisdom of the older, and the older to share what God has taught them. We are starting group studies of this book in our church.

    3 out of 5 stars women's ministry primer.......2000-03-24

Spiritual mothering is a good starting point to developing a meaningful women's ministry. The ideas brought forth in this book are very basic. It is too bad that the author did not go into more depth as to how spiritual mothering can be developed in a local congregation. I presented a program on this book to the United Methodist Women's group at my church. The women in my group felt overwhelmed by the title, but later concluded that Spiritual Mothering is a "heavy" title assigned to christian fellowship among women. I am not sure Mrs. Hunt had this in mind in writing this book. I recommend this book for women who are new to the christian faith, and for those who are just starting in women's ministry.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging yet Refreshing.......1999-12-02

This text provides a good example of how one can be a mentor no matter what stage of life you are at or your giftedness. Encourages you to get involved in another's life and be a godly influence. Great for women's study groups/discussion.

3 out of 5 stars Practical Yet Partial.......2005-07-16

This book is based on a simple finding: "Research on mid-career, contemporary leaders led to [the] conclusion - few leaders finish well". Further, in the case where leaders did finish well, "their relationship to another person significantly enhanced their development". Thus the stage is set for the subject of mentoring, which the authors describe as (the concise definition):

    a relational experience
through which one person empowers another
    by sharing God-given resources.

Stanley and Clinton are well respected authorities in the field of leadership development, and this book represents a popular and "lightweight" version of far larger tomes, so providing easy access to their ideas. The authors focus mainly on the types of mentor who may enrich our lives, and how. The book explores nine common mentor types, and "ten commandments" required for successful mentoring one-on-one. Two further types of mentoring receive special attention, namely The Constellation Model (a relational network of upward, downward, and lateral mentoring), and Peer Co-Mentoring (mutual mentoring with a close friend).

The emphasis on the "relational experience" of mentoring is arguably both the greatest strength and the greatest weakness of the book. On the one hand, it offers one - in the words of the publishers - "access to the wisdom, experience, vision, and direction of those who have gone before". On the other hand, there is a great deal of emphasis on the values, skills, etc. which are transferred to the one being mentored, yet limited appreciation of how mentoring might point to God. The authors hardly touch on the type of mentoring which focuses on the "encounter with the Holy", and the sovereign grace required for a Christian leader to succeed and survive. In short, it tends towards a "Latin" theology of mentoring.

The book has a strong foundation in research and experience, and for this alone it is well worth a look. It is characterised by simplicity and ease of reading, and makes excellent use of diagrams, tables, and real-life illustrations to present the material in a readable and approachable way. On the whole, it gives one a good grounding in some of the more practical aspects of mentoring and being mentored, and may encourage some readers to advance to the more "serious" works of Stanley and Clinton.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Analytical Book on Mentoring from a Christian Perspec.......2002-05-07

Connecting: The Mentoring Relationships You Need to Succeed in Life, by Paul D. Stanley and J. Robert Clinton, Colorado Springs, Navpress, 1992, 252 pages. Reviewed by J. L. Lee

Paul Stanley has over twenty years experience in leadership development. He has served as the international vice-president of the Navigators. His ministry has taken him to a variety of international locations where he has done both leadership training and consulting.

Dr. Robert Clinton has served on the faculty of the Fuller Theological Seminary as an associate professor of leadership for the school of world mission. He has completed extensive research in the field of leadership and specializes in leadership training, selection, and emergence patterns.

The thesis of this book is to show leaders a method they may use to "finish well." That method is to use mentoring as a leadership tool. The authors define the tool of mentoring in relationship terms as an experience where one person empowers another using divinely provided resources. The authors also clearly state the four objectives of the book on page 13.

1.) "How to be mentored even though there aren't enough mentors to go around"
2.) "An explanation of what makes mentoring work"
3.) "A balanced model of mentoring relationships"
4.) "Illustrations and ideas on how mentoring can work for you"

They answer the first objective in the first ten chapters of the book. This is accomplished by breaking down the task of mentoring into seven functions, Discipler, Spiritual Guide, Coach, Counselor, Teacher, Sponsor and Model. Model is further sub-divided into Contemporary and Historical Models. The first three mentoring functions are grouped together under the supra heading of Intensive Mentoring. The fourth through sixth functions are likewise grouped under the heading Occasional Mentoring. The two sub-types of models are considered under the heading Passive Mentoring.
The authors also define three essential dynamics of the mentoring process as Attraction, Responsiveness, and Accountability. These three dynamics are of greater importance in the more intensive types of mentoring. The three dynamics also address the second objective of the book, "what makes mentoring work."
The introduction of the seven mentoring functions and the three dynamics begins in chapter two, especially pages 41-45, and form the backbone of this book upon which most of the rest is expansion and elaboration. Chapter 11, especially pages 161-168, describes what the authors term the "Constellation Model" of mentoring. This model attempts to set forward a framework for the seven functions of mentoring detailed in chapters 3-10. This Constellation Model is defined in images of upward mentoring, downward mentoring, and peer co-mentoring. The peer co-mentoring is further described as either external (outside your organization) or internal (inside your organization). Peer co-mentoring is also described in terms of "close buddy", friend and acquaintance.
The fourth objective of the book is met throughout the book in the numerous illustrations and tidbit ideas for practical application of the mentoring concepts presented. This reviewer found chapters 13 and 14 to be especially helpful in meeting this objective. Chapter 13 listed "Ten Commandments of Mentoring" as well as insights from the mistakes, which the authors have made in mentoring. Chapter 14 presented five characteristics of leaders who finish well.
The book closes with an appendix that describes four principles of adult learning. The appendix is followed by a section of notes from the text. This section in turn is followed by a list of references cited in the text and an annotated bibliography.

Chapters three through ten form the core of the book and develop the material about the seven different functions of a mentor. These can also be understood to be seven different types of mentors.
Chapter three begins this section with a discussion of the Discipler Mentor. The chapter is descriptive and presents the basic growth habits of discipleship and a section of "hints for discipleship mentoring" that apply to both the disciple and the discipler. This chapter does not conclude with a chapter summary.
The second type of intensive mentoring, the spiritual guide, is described in chapter four. Again this chapter is descriptive with the major definitions being easily recognizable in boldface type font. This chapter delineates the functions of a spiritual guide and also gives a means of determining the need for a spiritual guide. It also does not conclude with a chapter summary.
Chapter five concludes the intensive mentoring functions with a development of the role of a coach. This chapter offers the mentoring dynamics, functions, and hints for the coach.
The idea of occasional mentoring is introduced in detail in chapter six with a discussion of the counselor mentor. Of special interest are the eight major empowerment functions of the counselor mentor as well as a section on hints for the counselor.
Occasional mentoring continues into chapter seven when the teacher is described as a mentor. Hints for the teacher-mentor and a section of tips to turn your teaching into mentoring are key sections of this chapter.
Occasional mentoring concludes in chapter eight when the sponsor is described. The sponsor functions and empowerment together with the practical hints on sponsor mentoring are useful listings. It's interesting that this chapter together with chapters five and ten are the only chapters dealing with the seven types of mentoring that offer chapter summaries at their conclusion. Several of the chapters do conclude with a section titled for further study. Chapters nine and ten take up the concept of passive mentoring by describing the role of first the contemporary model and then the historical model in the two chapters respectively.
As noted above, the heart of the book is found in chapters three through ten and each of these chapters in turn addresses the stated thesis of the book which is to present a method which leaders may use to finish well. While the concept of finishing well is not specifically addressed in great detail within the core of the book, in fact it is addressed most significantly in the final chapter, the methods presented in the core build up to and support the conclusion of the book with this thesis.
The book is very systematic and analytical in presenting a theory of mentoring. The structure appears easy to discern and the descriptive material tends to hold the reader's interest. It is a relatively easy read that seems to accomplish the purpose well which the authors set forth for it. This reviewer would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject of mentoring.

5 out of 5 stars Very practical with solid foundations.......2001-04-18

Stanley and Clinton have written a very practical guide to developing mentoring relationships. By addressing several kinds of mentoring (from intentional discipleship to passive mentorship) they have digested sophisticated theory into reasonable methods. Throughout the book they also offer their own personal experiences as examples of the principles they wish to bring out, which adds a very readable flavor. At times the authors seem to treat the topic of relationships with a sterile pragmatism, which is my only complaint about the book. Perhaps Stanley and Clinton would do well to spend time reading Larry Crabb's book by the same name! Overrall, I appreciated this book and I am using some of the principles in my own ministry at Biola University.

Secular books on coaching include basic premises that are at odds with the core tenants of the Christian faith. This book aligns coaching principles with those tenants.

    5 out of 5 stars Christian coaching.......2007-05-16

Collins wrote the textbook used by many seminaries to teach Christian counseling. Collins here applies his wisdom to the field of Christian coaching. (He explains the difference well)

Coaching is a good leadership development tool as well as a tool for helping people to escape hurts and hang-ups. It is different from counseling in that it does not require the coach to be the all-wise counselor, and it helps the coached person to see on their own what steps need to be taken. (Similar to Carl Rogers)

Coaching is a useful tool for a church or group to help each other to grow.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Resource!.......2006-10-04

This book was the main text for my Christian Life Coaching course and was a great read! It explains lots of different niches within Christian coaching in ways that are simple to understand.

At times, I felt like I just wanted to "get to the meat" of the book, but I am always that way and don't like a lot of fluff. Collins gives a good background of coaching, but it just wasn't something I cared much about! Give me the tools to help someone right away! :o)

If you are considering becoming a Christian Coach, this is a MUST READ book!

4 out of 5 stars Christian Coaching Exemplified.......2006-03-28

I really thought this book gave a great layman's format for Christian Coaching. Coaching could apply anywhere, Christian or non-Christian; and relates the basic principles behind coaching where anyone could read it and understand the concepts. It was a great training tool.

for anyone in christian leadership or those wanting to go into christian counseling. Mr. Collins gives easy to follow skills and steps needed to help yourself or others change teir future and outlook on life.

    2 out of 5 stars unsure.......2006-12-12

The author used avidly personal examples, examples from others, quotes, and related scripture which illustrated themes in the principles Jesus taught to his disciples. This also aided in allowing the readers to relate the examples in the book towards their own personal life. The book also outlined that a questionnaire was sent out to 100 women and the book was based on the experiences those women had with mentoring.

I did not feel that this book was adequately categorized as a book that's primary focus on mentoring. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is a mentor or contemplating whether or not to be a mentor. While this book did do a good job outlining how one can intertwine religion into mentoring it's it did not provide enough material for me to be able to learn from it's text and apply what I learned to a real life situation.

3 out of 5 stars If you're a young girl, this book is probably not for you.......2005-01-06

This book is a great MENTORING book, I will say that. BUT it is not for younger girls (Im 22 and read this about a year ago) and it is DEFINATLY not what a young girl would get if she based her purchase on just the book's title (its NOT about becoming an influence to the people around you as I had thought - instead, its a "how to mentor young church ladies" book). I wanted a book that would help me learn how to generally influence others my age in the christian walk - instead I got a book on how to directly mentor people decades younger than me one-on-one.

It is definately catered towards OLDER church going ladies (in their 40s, 50s, 60s) and even the wording sometimes made me feel isolated from the author's intended audience. As a young christian girl, I even had a hard time relating to her teachings as they were mostly based on her own life experiences and were instructions on how to mentor people.

Again, may i stress - direct "mentoring" and general "influence" are NOT the same concepts!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, uplifting and encouraging book........2002-10-25

This is the first Carol Kent book that I have read, but it will not be the last. I loved it! It reminded me of how we can be an encourager to others and often we may not even realize it. Just by letting the love of Jesus shine through us to others. How we can help lead others to Christ just by be being an example of a good christian friend. This book is excellent, great for a women's book club read.

5 out of 5 stars Impacting Young Women's Lives For Christ.......2000-11-15

When I began reading this book, I was able to relate to what the writer was saying because I've been impacted by two Godly women in my life. Mrs. Kent explains clearly how we as women need to impact other women. This book can be used for any women who desires to impact lives. This book would motivate you to do so, due to what Christ has done in your life, we are to pour our experiences in the lives of other women. So every women who wants to impact lives, you should get this book. Zinnada L. Hodge Bladensburg, MD

    Book Description

Women over 40 long to redefine the rest of their lives. Dale Hanson Bourke and the friends she interviewed--including General Claudia Kennedy, Kay Warren, Becky Pippert, journalist Peggy Wehmeyer and Jill Briscoe--resoundingly affirm that midlife can be a time of spiritual rebirth and a chance for God to get one's attention now that others' demands on her life have diminished. Bourke offers essential principles that will help women to blaze new trails in their best years.

4 out of 5 stars A good read for mature women.......2006-07-10

This is a book for mature women (these days and in this context meaning baby-boomers) facing the "second half of life." Dale Hanson Bourke, now in her early 50s, has a different take on life than she did as a young I-can-do-it-all wife, mother and entrepreneur. She was the type who set annual five-year and 10-year goals, building toward the next achievement. She even wrote her first book about it, titled YOU CAN MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE. But now? In recent years she's felt drawn toward what she refers to as a "second calling," one that "doesn't necessarily build your résumé, but it builds your soul." And here she welcomes readers to join her on this transformative journey.

The book is framed by the biblical story of Naomi (and secondarily Ruth). "Before the Book of Ruth begins, Naomi is enjoying a wonderful life... She loves God and her family, and all seems right in the world." But "then the bottom falls out." And later, "through divine providence and Naomi's obedience, the Book of Ruth ends" with Naomi "feeling fulfilled" and "playing a pivotal role" in a larger story.

But Naomi and Ruth provide the framework for a contemporary challenge: "If all the Christian women aged forty and older got truly serious about seeking God and letting him use us in amazing ways, we could completely change our world." With an endearing vulnerability, Dale walks you through her own menopausal crisis and awakening, realizing that what really energized her involved international relief and justice issues, including AIDS awareness and orphan assistance. But such work, which started with high-profile marketing advice and overseas travel, eventually and humbly included night after night of personally labeling and mailing out packages of "AIDS orphan bracelets" --- not because she had to do it herself but because she wanted to.

This is more than her own story, however. She also draws in vignettes of other empty-nest moms and career women who've found a new stride. And parts of the middle chapters are quite specific in their how-to pointers for finding new direction --- identifying what one needs to let go of and leave behind before one can step out in confidence and faith.

In one particularly interesting chapter, titled "Giving up Idols," Dale humorously describes how much she valued her airline "super-duper premier executive platinum card" and ultimately admits that she's "still an achiever in recovery."

Whole chapters are devoted to the foundational aspects of prayer and to the critical support of friends and mentors. "If prayer is the bedrock of the second half of life, then friends are the rich soil that give form, substance, and richness to our calling." She also addresses the value of passing on your life lessons to the younger generation.

One chapter departs from the Naomi metaphor and centers on the wilderness manna that was edible only one day. Here Dale discusses the importance of "living in the present," letting God set the agenda, taking on the task set before her rather than relying on those old long-term goals. Though she has obviously felt the grief of letting go and moving on, maybe she has ultimately experienced her heart's dreams come true.

The publisher's claim that this is the "first major book to address the spiritual side of a woman's second half of life" gave me pause. It's been out nearly a decade, but for a midlife woman I'd also recommend Valerie Bell's A WELL-TENDED SOUL.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-07-06

As one who is on the early end of midlife, I found myself in a place, not of my choosing, where I had never imagined I would be. This book didn't say where to go. However it did say how to go. The right book at the right time with the right message. It is unabashedly Christian, without giving the answers. If you're facing midlife in crisis, or just facing it with sudden blocks of open time, this is a wonderful and inspiring book.

4 out of 5 stars Gentle invitation to relinquish control to God in mid-life.......2006-06-24

In 1985, Dale Hanson Bourke published You Can Make Your Dreams Come True, a book designed to encourage women to believe in themselves, their passions, and their power in God to realize their dreams. Two decades later, her latest book, Second Calling: Passion & Purpose for the Rest of Your Life, could be its sequel. For Second Calling is all about life after the dream has been achieved. Or not.

Patterned on the book of Ruth, Second Calling is written for women "in or approaching the second half of . . . life." And it's especially relevant to those who spent the first half of their lives pursuing their dreams, whether successfully or not, only to find as they transition into mid-life that they no longer have the energy and drive they once had.

After the death of her husband and sons, the future looked bleak as Naomi packed her things, dispatched her daughters-in-law, and headed out of Moab back to Judah. But Ruth refused to leave, so together they made their way to Bethlehem where Naomi instructed the women to call her "Mara, because the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me." At that moment, when all seemed lost, Naomi had no way of knowing that God would use her life to bless future generations.

Through this study of Naomi's life, Bourke encourages women to realize that when age inevitably takes its toll on our energy and vitality, when our dreams have either been realized or given up, our lives can still have meaning and purpose. Once the busyness has slowed, God can finally get our attention and show us, as He did Naomi, that it's not what we can do for Him, but what He can do through us that ultimately matters.

"Naomi became part of the greatest story ever told," writes Bourke, "not because of what she did in the first half of her life but because of what God did through her in the second half."

Naomi's second calling was to be "called the grandmother of baby Obed, who later becomes the grandfather of David." Only God knows what unique second calling He has in mind for each of us, but, according to Bourke, Naomi's story "is evidence that God wants to tell a story through us as well." In Second Calling, Dale Hanson Bourke has issued a gentle invitation to women in mid-life and beyond to relinquish control of our lives and to rest in God's grace while He writes "the rest of [our] story." - Linda Whitlock, Christian Book Previews.com

3 out of 5 stars One Missing Ingredient.......2006-06-04

Although I appreciated much about the book and could relate to lots of its content, I felt that an important piece was missing -- and that was the fact that although Mrs. Bourke is married, so little, in fact, minute, reference was made to her husband's part in her life, her career, her choices, her future. It was as if he was a non-entity in any of this. She made mention of her sons, but so little of her husband. This stood out as a glaring omission to me since our decisions in marriage impact our mate greatly, and particularly as we make choices that have us traveling around the country and the world in work and/or ministry. I would have liked to hear more about this relationship, and particularly in respect to her "Second Calling."

5 out of 5 stars A soulful, reflective and gentle push for a new perspective is maintained throughout.......2006-05-23

If you're a religious-thinking, older woman wondering if the best of life has already happened, SECOND CALLING: FINDING PASSION AND PURPOSE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE is for you. It tells how to make peace with the past and with annoying people, provides first-person spiritual reflections and insights, and offers plenty of real-life examples and case histories for finding meaning in the world. A soulful, reflective and gentle push for a new perspective is maintained throughout.

    Book Description

The 21st Century has brought a new urgency for Christian women to search for meaningful relationships whee they can live out their faith. This is due in part to our increasingly secular lifestyle and the radical changes in marriage and family life that have isolated and discouraged many women. Women Mentoring Women offers the solution to a chronic weakness in churches: the lack of involvement of wives, sisters, mothers, and daughters in vital women's ministries.

    4 out of 5 stars Women's ministry how-to help.......2004-09-25

I found this book incredibly valueable in beginning an effective and enjoyable women's ministry at our church! Not only are there examples of flyers, surveys and information sheets, there are ideas for fellowships, the best time to have them and even how to gather ideas from the ladies at your church. I have put many of their ideas to work and with great success. There are so many good suggestions that your imagination is bound to be sparked and you will soon have a thriving ladies ministry of your own!

    4 out of 5 stars Melissa Schweihofer.......1998-03-18

I feel the book has a lot to give. The Heart to Heart Ministry was wonderful. I feel you can apply a lot of the information in the book. The Day Care section should have been more in line of helping not talking about things women already fear. My Church did use the surveys and they were a great sucess. Women need to apply things in the book that will help them grow and leave those things that is not for them.

4 out of 5 stars Organized, Useful, but the book prefer's stay-at home mom's.......1998-01-28

I liked the book for its organization, and practical way it presented all the areas of Women's Ministry, etc. But I was a little put off by the focused preference for women to be stay-at home moms, almost as if it were a sin to work outside the home, which it isn't. Also the book had a whole appendix on how day care for children is bad -- which was written by a man.
