Customer Reviews:
A fine overview of the dynamics of interpersonal leadership........1999-04-03
After reading the book Effective Coaching, by Marshall J. Cook, I now have some helpful insights about the role of coaching. I initially wanted to see how closely the role of coach and mentor was, and decided to see if this could help make that distinction. As I soon discovered the many hats that coaches wear, I began to see that all the "hats" started to look very similar. Coaching and mentoring are similarly focused disciplines.
Coaching is not about control; it is empowerment, and leading by example. The role of coach is very dynamic. Many good intentions drive a coach to reach the learner, and depending on what situations are presented, the coach must be prepared and skilled to handle it. This book illustrates effective coaching techniques through the use of various scenarios.
The chapters are organized into sub groups of the different roles a coach can be. "As a coach, you must be problem solver, trainer, teacher, mentor and corrector." Some of the skills covered are good questioning, being a good listener, problem solving, addressing change, overcoming obstacles, and valuable communication strategies. Plus bonus principles for good coaching and good living. All chapters have smart management tips that incorporate these skills to help you avoid potential real-life roadblocks and to put you into the Coach's and learner's perspectives.
Throughout the book, the margins have helpful keys to the terms and the author has flavored each chapter with cases that relate to the chapter's theme. I enjoyed the voice the author used to express himself in each chapter. You find yourself quickly acknowledging the main points that are introduced. Each chapter concludes with a coach's checklist where all the pertinent points are restated. This is a book that I have underlined and highlighted for future reference.

Book Description
Coaching is vital to developing talent in organizations, and it is an essential capability of effective leaders. The CCL Handbook of Coaching is based on a philosophy of leadership development that the Center for Creative Leadership has honed over thirty years with rigorous research and with long, rich experience in the practice of leadership coaching. The book uses a coaching framework to give a compass to leaders who are called to coach as a means of building sustainability and boosting performance in their organizations. The book explores the special considerations that leader coaches need to account for when coaching across differences and in special circumstances, describes advanced coaching techniques, and examines the systemic issues that arise when coaching moves from a one-to-one relationship to a developmental culture that embraces entire organizations.

Indispensible Reference for New Coaches.......2002-05-31
There are wonderful gems of wisdom in this coaching manual. I adapted the information in it to start up a grammar school track and field program and we were highly successful in our first season! Coach Wallace gives you the benefits of his 30+ years coaching and it greatly reduced the learning curve for me. This is especially useful for coaches starting up programs on a "shoestring" budget with less-than-optimal facilities. I would highly recommend it to any track and field coach.
Disappointing.......2002-03-14
Although this book has some helpful information, overall I do not feel that it is ideal for a typical high school track program (in Iowa). There is only information on 300m hurdles, not run in Iowa; we run the 400m hurdles in high school. Also the majority of high schools here do not begin track until February or March, and the training schedule in the book is for a much longer season and seems to be geared more for the college level.
Ok, But!.......2001-11-04
I found this book to be a valuable resource. I don't like that coach Wallace offers for you to email him for additional info - and when you do, he doesn't reply. Take the offer out of the book then.
I am still learning from you........1999-11-30
I enjoyed reading the T&F Coaches's Survival Guide. Although I attended Lindbloom H.S. in the late 60's I was able to learn from you then and now I am learning from you in the 90's. This is a great book for new Coaches. Please send me an update on what you are currently doing. If would be great to hear about you current successes.
It will help me a lot, as I don't have an asst. coach........1999-03-04
I liked the practice sessions/periods broken up. We do not have indoor track and I was wondering how to use the practice sessions when we start March 8, practice for about 3 to 4 weeks and then have meets on Tues. and Sat. till the middle of May and then have our District meet?

Book Description
In today's job market, organizations are impatient for results, so managers feel they need to make a fast and powerful impact to establish themselves in a new position. Sudden Impact on the Job is based on interviews with many successful executives and business luminaries who endured highly visible transitions. The Book explores the factors that contribute to success and provides best practices for starting off on the right foot. At the same time, it dispels many commonly held beliefs about successful executives.
Customer Reviews:
Inside stories on how to move up the career ladder!.......2006-11-09
I'm a financial executive with a professional services organization and wish I had this book when I started this job and others before it. From my experience, there is no one formula for starting fast in a new job and Quandt really drives that point home with the breadth of stories the CEO's in her book share. Coming out of the financial services industry, Jamie Dimon's stories were of particular interest to me especially around how he picked his team and personally jumped in when needed - which seems to contradict all traditionally held beliefs. I was surprised by his candor - and that, of all the CEO's interviewed. I highly recommend this book for anyone from middle management on who wants to get the inside stories on how to move up the career ladder by those who have made it to the top.
This book is THE handbook for new executive hires.......2006-10-23
I own an executive search firm and I'm now providing a copy of this book to all the executives we place, as added insurance for their success. Quandt's stories illustrate the real-world challenges of starting a new job and debunk many traditionally held beliefs about job transition, such as the required 90-day plan. I'm amazed at how she was able to draw out the very authentic stories and emotions of some of the biggest name CEOs in the country. As great as this book is for new executives, I can't imagine an executive of any degree of experience who wouldn't benefit from this book.
Real stories about real leaders, refreshing!.......2006-10-21
I have had the opportunity to work closely with two of the CEO's who were interviewed (Notebaert of Qwest & Vander Zanden of School Specialty) and have also met with Russo (of Lucent). I can vouch for the realness of the stories being reported and situations being shared. The author's (Susan Quandt's) ability to share the unique story of each of the top leaders she met with reveal a very human side to how these individuals handled some very complex challenges in taking on the top job of thier respective companies. What is compelling about this book is that there is no simple formula for success that so many business books seem to attempt to define, rather Quandt stresses the uniqueness that each person's experiences bring to the challenges they faced and the thought process each used to make some very significant and impactful decisions. I strongly recommend this book. It is a compelling read for any aspiring executive and/or manager who wants to better understand how the leaders of their organization think, take action and analyze the outcomes. Some great lessons on authenticity .

A Great Introduction to Coaching.......2002-04-10
Having trailed along on the business sidelines for a number of years, coaching is suddenly enjoying a major surge of popularity. But what's it all about? Tennis in the Boardroom? Golf swings by the water cooler?
Myles Downey's book, despite its relative brevity, makes an excellent job of introducing some of the key considerations involved in training or hiring business coaches. At 135 pages (including the Introduction) you obviously aren't going to get an in-depth explanation of what coaching can do for you and/or your company. What I think you WILL get is a pretty good feeling for whether coaching is something you want to get involved with.
If that makes the book sound a bit airy-fairy, I apologise. Mr Downey also does an excellent job of laying the groundwork for becoming an "effective coach" - if that's what you're after. There are plenty of very practical tips, including useful models, such as the "Spectrum of Coaching Skills" and the "GROW" (or "TO GROW") outline for any coaching session.
One of the highlights of the book as far, as I was concerned, was the inclusion of snippets of dialogue (ranging from a few lines to several pages in length) used to actually demonstrate how to handle various elements of the coaching function.
The one element of the book I felt a little uneasy about was Mr Downey's hypothesis that a manager can also function as coach to one of his/her subordinates. As Mr Downey himself points out, facts and thoughts might emerge during a coaching session that could potentially be somewhat damaging when it comes to appraisal time. There seems to be an assumption that a "good" manager could somehow separate the two functions and ignore in 'manager mode' the things s/he has learnt whilst in 'coaching mode'.
I'd suggest that this is a piece of impractical idealism, which places an unrealistic and unfair burden upon the manager and the coachee alike.
Rather than sweeping such considerations under the rug, it seems to me that coaching is likely to remain a fad until issues such as this have been fully addressed and resolved.

Wrestling Coach's Survival Guide:.......2000-02-07
This is one of the best books you can buy in the field. It is a must have for any coach from middle school to high school. The forms and example practices I found especially helpful. Purchase this FIRST, read it, and then come back for the manuals on moves.
Reccomended to all coaches.......1999-03-09
This is a must read for all coaches or coaching hopefuls. It covers everything from the basic development of a program to pre-season, post-season workouts to techniques for advancing your program to the next level. It is a great organizer, making the season easier to handle.
Well organized guide, covering all aspects of the sport........1999-03-07
Great guide for beginner coaches because it covers many of the "extra" things that are involved with being a wrestling coach, and provides a thorough review of the basics.
