Book Description
The first reference to bring scientifically proven approaches to the practice of personal and executive coaching
The Evidence Based Coaching Handbook applies recent behavioral science research to executive and personal coaching, bringing multiple disciplines to bear on why and how coaching works. A groundbreaking resource for this burgeoning profession, this text presents several different coaching approaches along with the empirical and theoretical knowledge base supporting each.
Recognizing the special character of coaching-that the coaching process is non-medical, collaborative, and highly contextual-the authors lay out an evidence-based coaching model that allows practitioners to integrate their own expertise and the needs of their individual clients with the best current knowledge. This gives coaches the ability to better understand and optimize their own coaching interventions, while not having to conform to a single, rigidly defined practice standard.
The Evidence Based Coaching Handbook looks at various approaches and applies each to the same two case studies, demonstrating through this practical comparison the methods, assumptions, and concepts at work in the different approaches.
The coverage includes:
- An overview: a contextual model of coaching approaches
- Systems and complexity theory
- The behavioral perspective
- The humanistic perspective
- Cognitive coaching
- Adult development theory
- An integrative, goal-focused approach
- Psychoanalytically informed coaching
- Positive psychology
- An adult learning approach
- An adventure-based framework
- Culture and coaching
Customer Reviews:
A Great Resource in the Field of Coaching.......2006-05-11
Dianne Stober has been an active player in improving the field of executive coaching so I was delighted to see this publication. The handbook is comprehensive in coverage and well-organized. I am glad to see a book that has a strong theoretical base that also offers some easy to understand models and frameworks of coaching. While I enjoyed the entire book, I particularly liked the authors' chapter on a contextual approach to coaching as well as the chapter on positive psychology. I would highly recommend this book.
Academic Review.......2006-05-05
Notwithstanding the marketeering/hype that the book presents "scientifically proven" information, this "evidence-based" approach is on-target. In one source text the academic community now has a clearly presented body of knowledge from which we can trace how theory and practice can be linked. We also have a first opportunity to offer graduate programs or other disciplines where coaching is taught a volume that will allow an appreciation the breadth of coaching approaches available and the opportunties for engaging in further study as students, teachers, researchers, practitioners or combinations thereof. Within a few hours of reading this book (from cover to cover) I ordered 6 additional copies for our coaching faculty in the Organizational Dynamics Masters Degree program at the University of Pennsylvania.
I can't wait for the book to come out! .......2005-01-25
Dianne and Anthony - As a coach and social worker, I look forward to your work because I know that it will further develop and refine my skills. It will also evolve the coaching field as a whole. Thank you for taking the lead in this important area!

Customer Reviews:
Not very good........2007-02-07
This book is a bunch of separate pieces about HRM. It's not a complete nor recent manual. It's obvious it has been augmented as years have passed by, but not reviewed to form a real manual up-to-date with the state of the art. Specially, chapter 21 about organizational culture is absolutely obsolete.
It's not worth the price.
a classcial book.......2005-09-29
I think it is a classcial book for company human resource management.When your people grow,your company will grow.So from this book,You can learn how to build your human resource system and how to help your employees to develop their potence for your company.
If you want to learn more about human resource management practice,I believe it is good for you.
Human Resource Management Practice.......2005-09-22
The Handbook of Human Resource Management Practice by Michael Armstrong is a comprehensive book on the art and practice of human resource management. The book is well structured and provides a step-by-step guide to the essential principles. I found the book easy to use, to be clear and reflected the current practice to the subject. The book explains management and employee perspective and their interaction in the work place. It also provides a substantial treatment of human resource management practice.
What I appreciated about this book is that it provides practical advice that I can use in my organisation to improve its effectiveness. I also used it as a reference book in my Doctor of Business Administration course I am currently pursuing. Being based in an African country, what it teaches is very relevant and useful in African organisations.
The book is divided into eleven parts that cover the whole range of human resource management topics namely:
* Human resource management
* Human resource management process
* Organisational behaviour
* Work and employment
* Organisation, jobs and roles
* Employee resourcing
* Performance management
* Human resource development
* Rewarding people
* Employee relations
* Health, safety and welfare
* Employment and human resource management services.
I would not recommend the book to those who are looking for basic knowledge about human resource management as the book covers in detail the major issues pertaining the human resource management. However, for those students who are familiar with the subject or have done an undergraduate course on the subject and wish to pursue the subject at postgraduate level, this is the right book for you. You will benefit from the in-depth treatment of the theory and best practices in the area. I enjoyed the fact that the author also covers e-learning, talent management and change management, which are subjects of particular interest to me.
Highly Recommended !.......2005-03-16
Human resources professionals will find Michael Armstrong's book practical, helpful and relevant. It discusses all facets of current practice, including such relatively new developments as e-learning and recruiting, and it discusses how you can help your organization implement change. The book would make an excellent college text, since it covers HRM's evolution, principles, theories, practice, research, job descriptions and more. The author seems to have two goals: to provide comprehensive information about human resource management and to persuade upper level managers to integrate HRM into strategic planning. This would empower HR departments to generate broader organizational results. To get the most from this manual, given its textbook style, practitioners may wish to study it chapter by chapter. Since organizational philosophies, functions and practices differ, it even lends itself to further discussion when HRM professionals gather to share ideas and swap proven practices. We think those in the field will derive a great deal of value from this book.
A very handy handbook on HRM........2001-06-23
I'd rate this book a must have for anyone who is remotely involved in HRM. Line managers and supervisors will be well advised to keep the book handy. It is a handbook you can dip into and get a quick introduction to any subject related to Human Resources Management. It may not cover some topics in depth as one would like but it captures the essence and key ideas about the topics. It is indeed a classic. For those who may be looking for something hands-on, you wish to look at Mr Armstrong's other book, "How to be an Even Better Manager", which is a complete A-Z of proven and essential skills. With the two books, you should have a fairly good grasp of HRM matters.

Customer Reviews:
Superb overview of modern Organization Development.......2006-03-19
Edited collections at this price point can be a problem. But compared to its competitors, this NTL Handbook is an outstanding volume, written by some of the biggest names in OD for practitioners at all levels. Great value after you get over the sticker shock.
As a skimmed the book I was amazed by the new insights that leapt out at me, by the clear, jargon-free writing (relatively, after all it's a professional book) and by the generous references and citations. History, ethics, techniques, it's all there. While the formatting of tables is sometimes inconvenient (I found myself turning the book sideways more than I should have had to), it's a small price to pay for the comprehensiveness of the treatment.
My only disappointments were the two chapters on large group interventions. One covers the familiar territory the familiar way (refer to the books you already own). The other gives a partial account of the newest, technology-enabled 'town meetings' without grounding the story in the theory of why they work (or should) and how cost-effective they are as OD interventions, as opposed to political rallys. The rest of the book is fresh and new, even of topics that we practitioners think we know like the back of our hand. I marvelled at the new life some chapters breathed into traditional material.
This book from NTL Institute should be in every consultant's library, as a refresher and, more important, as a source of new inspiration as you work with organizations and the people in them.

The Successful Leadership Development Program: How to Build It and How to Keep It Going
ASIN: 0787952370 |
Book Description
How are the world's most successful organizations developing their leaders? "This book will help anyone who is charged with a leadership development initiative or is learning about leadership development. Full of practical examples and tools from companies that are known for having a reputation for developing leaders."
Michael Piergrossi; vice president, leadership and organization development, W. R. Grace & Co.
Using the case studies in this book will give you the opportunity you to:
* Benchmark against SmithKline Beecham's 21 Leadership Competencies
* Implement cutting-edge tools including Allied Signal's Career Profile, continuous improvement and performance objectives tools
* Customize a training curriculum that works for your organization based on: Imasco's Operating Company Visits and Work Projects, Colgate-Palmolive's Key Accountability program, or Abbott Lab's Managing Across Boundaries
* And much more!
In 1998, Linkage, Inc., and Warren Bennis collaborated in completing a study of more than 350 companies involved with leadership development and found that:
* Nearly all respondents recognized the need to develop stronger leaders, yet less than 44 percent had a formal process for nominating or developing high-potential employees
* Companies that do successfully build their high-potential employees use structured leadership development systems
* The programs that make a difference include some or all of three critical components: formal training, 360-degree feedback, and most importantly, exposure to senior executives including mentoring programs
The result of this study is Linkage Inc.'s Best Practices in Leadership Development Handbook. With its case study approach, this book gives you access to the practical, easy-to-apply tools, instruments, training, and competency models that fifteen world-class organizations use as benchmarks to successfully implement their leadership development programs.

How can companies recruit, retain, train, motivate, and reward great employees--especially in a tight labor market? How can they win new customers and boost sales? The secret is to lighten up and get a little weird! Creativity and productivity can go hand in hand, as this chock-full-of-ideas book amply shows.
Like a Christmas stocking crammed with treasures, Get Weird! overflows with irresistible techniques for innovating and problem-solving. It explains how to start thinking "outside the box," then presents 101 adaptable ideas, each in a reader-friendly two pages or fewer. For instance, readers will learn about:
* Whaddya Know? (learning through puzzles, quizzes, and games)
* Hire-Times (post-interview fun--a night-on-the-town with host employees)
* Wall of Fame (display of individual successes)
* Rock Me, Baby (give techies and GenXers the rock-concert tickets they crave)
* Galloping Gourmets (take-home gourmet dinners for employees and their family).
Slightly off-the-wall at first glance, the book is firmly rooted in solid performance theory. Managers can use it to find quick, effective, fun solutions to work challenges.
Customer Reviews:
An enjoyable book........2007-09-02
This was my 2nd business type book I've purchased.This book is all about how to being a good boss and looking after your staff and making your business a great place to work.Definitely a 101 type book.Plenty of advice here to help all business improve and keep good staff from leaving.
An ideal book that all business owners should have.
How weird is weird?.......2007-04-04
Get Weird is a book full of not-so-weird but some practical ideas on how to make your company better-recognized, your employees happier, and your bottom line stronger. The author of Get Weird is someone who believes creativity in management comes from the HR department, so he is the kind of person who keeps "techies", as he calls them, at arms length and tosses some Hot Pockets in periodically. But, as author Putzier points out, people go to three-day seminars thinking that if they get one or two good ideas from it, it will be worth it. By those standards, everyone will find Get Weird worth it.
My favorite: Family Day, when everyone brings in their children/parents/significant others, so they can see what the company and their loved one does all day. Everyone gets to leave with swag.
Stupider idea, could only come from HR: Casual get togethers that involved forced mingling featuring probing personal questions of fellow employees.
We do it better: Having the CEO take the entire company to a matinee, complete with complimentary snacks for all.
The Real Deal.......2002-04-15
As an insatiable consumer of business books, I can confidently say that "Get Weird!" is the most engaging, entertaining, yet useful business book I've ever read. It's chock full of great ideas guaranteed to make your workplace the one people on the outside want to get into. Putzier's humorous writing style and knack for knowing a great idea when he sees one make this one of the most enjoyable and beneficial business books you'll ever buy. I've recommended it to hundreds of people and will continue to for the rest of my career.
Good conversational thought-provoker.......2001-10-29
When John Putzier was a child, his mother told him he was weird. For most kids, being told they were weird might be traumatizing. Not John. He prided himself on being weird-different. Over the years of his career in human resource consulting, professional speaking, and college teaching, he has prided himself on being weird-just a little bit different, off-beat. The power of being off-beat is encapsulated in a quotation I learned in my growing-up years, "It's the usual thing, done in the unusual way, that captures the attention of the world."
John certainly has captured the attention of the world with his work. And how he shows us how to make this happen in our lives as executives, managers, and human resource professionals.
Weirdness is doing things differently. The results can be very positive, both in your confidence and in the results you can achieve. Putzier spends the first part of the book explaining this and setting up the reader to receive and consider 100 thought-provoking ideas. This section is titled Tapping Your Natural Weirdness, aka [also known as] Creative Thinking and Problem-Solving. The double title theme continues through the other parts of the book, enabling the reader to comfortably transition between Putzier's weird titles and terminology that will be more familiar.
One hundred ideas are presented in the balance of the book, categorized in seven sections. Titles of those sections are Weird Ideas to Win Today's Talent, aka Recruitment; Weird Ideas for the Care and Feeding of Today's Talent, aka Retention; Weird Ideas for Changing Your Company, aka Fun & Games with a Purpose and a Profit; Weird Ideas for Perks, Pay, and Pats on the Back, aka Recognition and Incentives; Weird Ideas for Educating Today's Talent, aka Training and Development; and Weird Ideas for Enhancing Your Company Image, aka Sales, Service, Public Relations & Personal Satisfaction. Idea 101 is in Part 8, where the author suggests that you have other ideas in your head that you can add to his list. Remember, Putzier is endeavoring to stimulate your thinking, not just give you pat answers or magic pills.
There are several additional features that add value to this book. The Table of content includes a phrase under each idea listing to quickly explain what the idea entails. An alphabetical list of ideas appears at the end of the book as an unusual, but helpful, index.
The book is easy to read and serves as a fine read-through in addition to a good reference book for follow-up.
Great insights--full of meat and fun to read.......2001-06-02
You will very quickly realize that this person is a veteran who is not talking theory. There is very serious substance and great ideas that can make a difference in the workplace.
I must add that it was delightful to read in terms of being a fun book I did not want to put down.
Worthwhile investment of time!

Well organized, user friendly and full of excellent activities to keep your groups engaged and focused on the topic of conflict management.
Every trainer should have a copy, reference it frequently, and utilize the content themselves to manage conflict that sometime occurs during training.
"The Conflict Management Skills Workshop".......2002-03-03
This book is an incredible resource for corporate trainers and college instructors! I was able to use the activities in this workbook with my traditional classes, as well as my adult learners in factory and union settings. Students learn better with hands-on activities and through the use of antecdotel stories they can remember. This book combines both to make for a fruitful learning experience. We have long needed a resource of this caliber that takes theory and really shows us how to put it into practice. I will be waiting for more titles from this author.
