Susan Scott believes that interpersonal difficulties--at work and at home--are a direct result of our inability to communicate well. Fierce Conversations is based on principles from her international consulting practice, in which she teaches executives how to conduct such exchanges more dynamically and ultimately more effectively, thereby improving the relationships they enjoy with their various dialogue partners "one conversation at a time." Using identifiable anecdotes from her experience to inspire and inform, along with a series of practical exercises designed to impart the requisite skills, Scott walks readers through the individual steps she's developed to build better associations through more robust and honest discourses. Addressing all aspects of the process, from several methods for listening more attentively to specific ways she's fashioned to confront and resolve issues "that stand between you and success," Scott offers the type of concrete advice and confidence-building counsel that should help even the most reticent improve their communication skills dramatically. --Howard Rothman

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-08-24
Extremely useful in both personal and professional life. I've attended many classes & seminars in the last 30 years but still learned a host of valuable info. Highly recommended.
Very Engaging .......2007-08-14
I settled in for an average book with and interesting title about communication. What I recieved was an invitation to look in my life and my business for fierce conversations. As a trainer and a business coach communication is my my tool.Fierce Conversations gave me tools that work, ways to assess my progress and stories that assist me in seeing what would be possible in my business and in my life if I had authentic, direct conversations with people. If you have to pick one communication book this year, it's this one!
An Insightful and Very Informative Approach to Communicating.......2007-08-08
Fierce Conversations provides an opportunity for the reader to gain information while participating in a self-discovery process. It takes the idea of communicating thoughts and ideas to a new level and challenges us to think before speaking by considering the ramifications of what others will hear. We are reminded that any "single conversation can change the trajectory of a business, a career, a marriage or a life." This is an awesome statement and the author proved her point repeatedly through examples.
I am determined to address my most challenging "Mineral Rights conversation (you'll have to read the book to know what I mean) in the very near future. I will also recommend my writers' group members review this book as an example of quality writing that captures the audience, propels them to action, and encourages completion of task.
Transformational .......2007-05-19
Susan Scott has a way of getting to the heart of the communciations problem. People say what they think you want to hear, and they are rarely authentic because they are afraid to be. They are even afraid to be honest with themselves. An excellent read.
Connect Better.......2007-05-12
It is rare that I read a book cover to cover. I read lots of books; however, I find most books contain little or nothing new. Susan's book is different.
In my line of work, I am only as successful as my ability to connect with others. Having an arsenal of powerful questions and a strong framework for presenting are key to my success. Susan's book contains the best tools I have found to connect deeply with others.

Customer Reviews:
More annoying than helpful.......2007-06-22
I have recently been into social dynamics and thought a book about the fine points of conversation would be helpful. Unfortunately, the book seems to be written by a prude who makes every effort to make your conversations as dull and boring as the book itself is.
Some major issues with the book.
a) Although "art" is the word chosen, most of the advice consists of things to avoid and in very specific detail (for example she says NEVER to say "to make a long story short")
b)More than half of the book text consists of assanine quotes from others that hardly relate to the subject as well as NUMEROUS and seemingly endless lists of statement examples (ie. "How nice of you" etc.) The author fails to realize that reading these are incredibly uninteresting and eliminate any sense of style one may develop. To top it off they are in alphabetical order which makes it easier to quickly glance over them.
c) The author seems to want to make you a parrot by telling you exactly how to respond in certain situations. She also often contradicts herself in these examples. She states to not say anything personal to anyone you meet yet reccomends a converstation starter as "you look fit, what do you do for a workout regiment".
Overall this book is a complete waste of time written by someone who I would never want to have a conversation with. She is so afraid of making a mistake that I would end up talking to her for an hour about the weather.
Conversations (at least socially) are meant to be fun, not exercises in safety. It is not the end of the world if you take a risk. It makes for a memorable conversation. I would avoid this book like SARS.
Great Book!.......2007-03-01
I don't know why there are two low reviews for this book--ignore these two retards. I read only the first two chapters and this book has already helped me tremendously. Rosalie gives examples and practical approaches on how to have meaningful conversation. This is a great book for anyone wanting to get the most out of conversation with others.
The Art of Talking to Anyone.......2006-06-30
The author provides savvy, helpful ideas on improving communication in all situations. Very good.
Not at all what I was hoping for.......2006-06-20
I put this audiobook in my Wish List several weeks before it came out. What I was hoping for was some good info on the psychology and execution of the lost art of conversation. What I got was an endless list of do's and do nots. I ONLY recommend this for EXTREME introverts. If you are looking to polish your social skills or socialize with anyone other than friends then keep looking.
How to be a boring individual.......2006-05-25
The first 1 or 2 chapters of this book do indeed give you some good pointers on how to build rapport and to look for common threads, all very important parts of a conversation. However the latter chapters really get dull and tend to advice the reader to shy away from responding openly to real life situations such as when a friend approaches you with a problem, the author advices that you shy away from really putting yourself in their shoes and offering help, rather it gives you advice on how to decline offering help to someone in need. It also advices the reader not to tell jokes in any situation or to shy away from tellign detailed stories. Whilst for a social lepper this maybe sound advice most of us want to live in a world full of excitement and have conversations that are fullfilling for everyone, not just being a bore and trying to "fit in". Perhaps as an Brit this book is very American centric, but I'm sure even Americans are not even so boring!

Worth Every Penny, Invaluable Advice For Mingling & Making New Friends!.......2007-08-25
I am a friendly, professional, outgoing person, who isn't shy around friends, but put me in a room full of people I have never met before, and like so many others, I become a complete -- "Minglephobe"!
I freeze up and immediately take physical inventory of all possible exits while the mind is grasping to retrieve all possible excuses that might be believable enough to give me the reprieve I need to make a quick and stealthy exit. Okay, okay, I'm not that bad, but those thoughts do run through my mind.
I've also recently realized that I get completely tongue tied with opening lines anytime I approach someone new and want to start a conversation.
I have purchased several books to help overcome this "phobia" and this by far, is the best of all the books.
I would highly recommend "The Art of Mingling." Even if you don't want to become an expert on mingling, this author provides some really wonderful insight, suggestions and methods for approaching strangers, some great conversation starters, tips on how to approach groups of people, and even how to get out of a conversation that is not going well.
I don't understand how the reviewer that said he was trying to improve his social skills found no value to this book. My girlfriend, who is one of those super-friendly people that can make friends with a room full of strangers in 15 minutes-flat also read and loved this book. She said it had some wonderful tips and she can't wait to try out some of the advice.
I think "The Art of Mingling" is an invaluable tool, and I would recommend this book to anyone that really wants some real-world, applicable solutions for making new friends.
NOT WORTH THE $, HERE ARE SOME ALTERNATIVES.......2007-07-29
refining my social abilities is something that always interests me. this book is a good read if you are extremely frightful and awkward in social encounters. however, it provides little useful information for those of us who have social skills, but are looking to improve them.
instead, i recommend:
- how to win friends and influence people -- by d. carniege. this text is the basis for all related books. in my humble opinion, it is the most widely cited and accepted novel in the self-improvement genre.
- how to talk to anyone -- by lowndes. the first half of that book is quite solid. however, in the secod half, the author discusses topics such as 'how to talk to celebrities', and thus loses focus and credibility. still though, a solid read.
- the friendship factor -- by mcginnis. if you dont get turned off by the religious references, the book is amazing. i opt to skip over any passage that goes on to ramble about jesus being the most socially apt individual. again, if you dont get turned off by the christianity aspect, it is a solid text.
Can't read her own book to save her life.......2007-06-20
Ms. Martinet has to be one of the worst readers I've ever heard "professionally." Even if her book were more clever (and it's not, studded as it is with chestnuts like "imagine everyone at the party in their underwear") her delivery would suck all the life out of it.
Why didn't anyone tell her? For crying out loud, she can't even pronounce paté
Breaking the Ice.......2007-05-09
Learn how to initiate small talk with this playful guide to social etiquette. Anyone looking for ways to improve their communication skills will benefit from this book.
Small Talk 101: Practical & lighthearted guide.......2007-04-20
Author Jeanne Martinet pens a playful guide to breaking ice and initiating small talk. These are useful social skills in settings that often make people feel awkward. The Art of Mingling offers a buffet of tips to choose from; graze at your leisure and try them out. Some are over the top and others are clearly designed just for women in mind.
Not just for "social cripples" but for anyone looking to improve their communication skills in the art of small talk, a talent for which can yield a big impact.

A Must Have for your Success Library.......2006-08-05
Filled with insights and philosophies of the accomplished interviewees that are inspiring and educational. The questions asked by the author is also very well directed to draw out the clues and wisdom we can all learn from. Everytime I read the book at differnt stages of my life, I pick up yet another idea/insight that I didn't realize before... probably because I personally am continuing to develop. As they say, at every life stage, income level, etc., you have to be a different person. It's a "must have" for your success library!

Not worth the money.......2006-06-07
First time I write a review, but I thought I would take the bother. I did not like this book. Although the title is accurate, it is about conversations with millionares, the conversations are not very enriching. I would have prefered to have spent my money on something else.
BE WARNED!!! In the book there is a web page address were two free gift are promised, this is not true a you are requested to sign up with your e-mail, only to be bombarded with SPAM, and end up with no gift.
great insights for the would be entrepreneur.......2005-11-09
Oddly enough I bought this book after a "spam" e-mail made its way into my inbox. It is a thoroughly insightful and enjoyable read and is one of the "Top Ten" books to have in your wealth building library. This book is filled with real world examples of people who had the courage and conviction to follow through on their ideas and get up again if they fell. No get rich without working ideas here, just real people with valuable products and services that stayed with their ideas when ordinary people might have given up. Inspiring and thought provoking- don't miss it.

Now, Susan RoAne, best selling author of How to Work a Room and The Secrets of Savvy Networking, shows how people can vastly improve their conversational skills and acquire the necessary verbal tools and techniques to advance their careers and personal lives.
Customer Reviews:
Packed with good ideas.......2007-08-30
A very pleasant book to read, filled with many good tips.
For instance, I plan to implement the "ice melter" by wearing an interesting or funny tie to get the conversation going.
Also good were the suggested ways to introduce yourself to folks that you may have met before (but you're not sure.) I liked also the suggested way to introduce people to others (include information on each party.)
A very good, practical read. Highly recommend!
All It Takes Is Practice.......2007-04-11
This is a good guidebook in learning how to easily converse with strangers by focusing on them and not us, another variant on helping others before we can help ourselves. Well organized, very readable, and humorous throughout, the material illuminates how and why we can expand our interests and horizons to become interesting to others and, no less important, to ourselves.
I also recommend her `How To Work A Room' as a companion book. Both are good investments in continuous self improvement. How to Work a Room: The Ultimate Guide to Savvy Socializing in Person and Online
Trashcan filler.......2006-08-14
This book might be the worst book I have read in years. Susan Roane has filled 240 pages with more or less obvious information like OAR approach. Observe, Ask a Question, Reveal your Thought. I don't wanna spend much time on reviewing this book, but I'll tell you: If you expect something that analyzes, refers to any scientific papers (or any stuidies at all) or puts any psychological aspects in the mix, then forget this book.
Practical Tips for Improving Your Social Skills.......2006-05-06
Those trying to network and build business or social relationships would benefit from reading Susan RoAne's book, What Do I Say Next?. Inside are hundreds of practical tips to help you converse well with others, and Susan's engaging style makes it enjoyable to read.
Reading this book will help you to successfully communicate in any environment. Each situation calls for different tactics, and here Susan gives you them all -- from talking with CEOs to visiting with elderly people in a nursing home. Especially helpful are the lists she provides. Who couldn't use a 20-bullet list of sure-fire ways to start a conversation anywhere?
After reading Susan's book, you'll have the confidence and skill it takes to start conversations with people you meet. Meaningful communication builds solid relationships, which in turn expands your network. And a powerful network of contacts is one of the most valuable assets an entrepreneur can own.
Many fine ideas!.......2005-11-10
Heard WHAT DO I SAY NEXT? . . . written and read by
Susan RoAne, its subtitle proves to be an apt description of what
the book is all about: TALKING YOUR WAY TO BUSINESS AND
SOCIAL SUCCESS.
There are many fine ideas presented here, all designed to make
communication just a little bit easier . . . many of them I've heard
before, yet even those I've too often forgotten.
I guarantee that by listening to or reading RoAne's work, you'll get
at least one tip that you can begin applying in a work and/or
home situation . . . to cite a few for your consideration:
Prepare for conversations by talking to yourself first. Make sure
your conversations are positive.
Always have a 7-9 second introduction for yourself.
Put your nametag on your right side. This makes it more visible
when you shake hands.
Make nametags large enough so all can read the names.
[if you forget somebody's name] Stick out your hand when you say
your name. People respond in kind 90% of the time.
Never ask, "Do you remember me?"
Conversations should have a non-compete clause.
People who say they are brutally honest are usually more
brutal than honest.

A VISIONARY LIFE is Marc Allen's sequel to VISIONARY BUSINESS. In its pages, he shows readers how they can expand their consciousness and significantly raise the quality of their lives. The book gains credence due to the fact that Allen embraced the principles in his book when he and Shakti Gawain founded New World Library, a flourishing publishing company. Given Allen's own success, it would seem that he knows what he's talking about. A VISIONARY LIFE is a visionary book because it transcends the airy platitudes found in many New Age books and get into the real, practical work that it takes to not only have a successful life but to be a successful person.

When liars are being accused of something, they'll stay calm because they're working on their rebuttal; this is why detectives were suspicious of O.J. Simpson when he didn't express outrage when accused of murdering his ex-wife and Ronald Goldman. Never Be Lied to Again is bursting with tested tips like this for quickly determining when you're being boondoggled. Body language, facial expressions, sentence structure, and word choice can all reveal when someone is lying, says psychologist David J. Lieberman, and he includes 46 of these "clues to deception" to help you, including tricks for framing questions without putting others on the defense. Once you use your newly honed "human lie detector" skills to figure out if you're being lied to, you can then dig for the truth using the specific, influential words and body postures that Lieberman suggests. Written with flair and humor, Never Be Lied to Again is designed to help you get the upper hand in any situation, whether you're trying to figure out if your spouse is cheating on you or if you suspect your coworkers are cooking the books.
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
It's difficult to have honest communication in a world where people bend the truth to fit their needs. Even more difficult is confronting a suspected liar in an open, forthright manner. In Never Be Lied to Again, human behaviorist Dr. Lieberman coaches listeners to face unfaithful lovers, colleagues, and employees. Lieberman introduces the tape and the remainder is read by male and female voices in varied tones. These different voices pinpoint numerous verbal and physical clues that will help you detect when people are lying; "attack sequences" and "silver bullets" allow you to initiate discussions with the guilty party. Although much of the information is geared to personal rather than professional situations, this tape is still a good resource for starting uncomfortable conversations. (Running time: 1.5 hours, one cassette) --Sharon Griggins

A painful read with some useful information.......2007-09-14
This was a tough book to get through and failed to introduce much information that I didn't already know. The writing style was painful due to the authors choice to alternate the pronouns "he" and "she". He did this to avoid sounding sexist but pointing it out made it even more irritating. Most of the examples used were nap inspiring: "You think a student was cheating on her exam." Or unrealistic: "You suspect someone of selling you a puppy with a bad heart." Lieberman knows what he is talking about and the cover of this book looks great but the inside presentation could use a major overhaul. You don't have to read "Never Be Lied To Again" to know I am telling the truth.
Wonderful.......2007-09-05
In the past two weeks it has saved me over $200 at the mecahnics (I used one of the techniques in the book and found out he was lying to me about my brakes AND transmission) amd it has probably saved me a lot of heartache. (It turns out that a guy I had just met was married although he told me otherwise. He confessed to being married after about ten minutes when I used one of the advanced techniques on him) I'm not kidding--this stuff works like magic. This book could not have come at a better time. (Although I don't beleive in coincidences)
All in all,of the books I've read over the years, this is the most significant without adoubt. I can't say enough about it.
Great Book!.......2007-09-04
Another new bestseller which I highly recommend - The Exclusive Layguide: When Dating and Having Sex with Incredibly Hot Women is No Longer Mirage Even If You Don't Look Like a Model or Don't Make a Fortune
Fun and useful.......2007-08-07
I have mixed emotions about this book. On one hand, it does cover a lot of signs that you are being lied to, and if you know about them you will pay attention and will be more likely to figure out the truth. On the other hand, some methods for finding out the truth are really disturbing because the author advocates using lies and manipulations for discovering the truth. However, I would still recommend reading it. You don't have to use every suggestion in it - use what feels right for you. I especially found the first part of the book useful - this is where the author lists all the signs of lying (and there are a LOT of them, I think that he probably covered them all). The second part lists the aforementioned "strategies". All in all, I found the book fun to read and very useful, and it is up to the reader to chose to use the book defensively or offensively.
Excellent book.......2007-06-28
He explain the subject very well and he doesn't need a lot of lines for explain each ideias. I bought others books and he is a expert in the others subject too. (I'from Brazil and I recommed him)

Book Description
Trump. Chopra. Zell. Gerstner. Springer.
Those are just some of the diverse names found in The Success Effect, a ground-breaking project by Cincinnati Enquirer business columnist John Eckberg. This 300-page volume contains 40 candid conversations with America's top business trailblazers and innovators, from household names like Deepak Chopra and Donald Trump, to the lesser known Tami Longaberger, IDEO's Tom Kelley, Doobie Brothers' and Steely Dan guitar wizard Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, LensCrafter's Dean Butler and PGA guru to the stars Dave Pelz. Dozens of other interviews reveal what it takes for individuals, teams and companies to lead, achieve, prosper and grow.
Through his unorthodox question-and-answer style, Eckberg brings revealing commentary and off-the-cuff answers from America's best business minds. The reader gets insight, not spin -- perspective and life lessons, not canned responses and public relations.
Compiled over years of research, The Success Effect is at the crossroads of life-guide and business-leadership book.
* "The best way to learn about how the business world really works is through storytelling, and John Eckberg's highly readable CEO snapshots teach a lot in a very short time. Fresh, entertaining and well-written." -- New York Times best-selling author Stephen Pollan, of "Die Broke" and "Second Acts."
* John Eckberg is one of Gannett's most highly regarded business columnists -- and this lucid and powerful book shows you why. Read this book and succeed!" -- New York Times best-selling authors Julia Sokol and Steven Carter, of "Men Who Can't Love" and "Help, I'm in Love With a Narcissist!"
* "It would not surprise me in the least to see 'The Success Effect,' John Eckberg's delightfully useful collection of CEO profiles, make some of the nation's business best-sellers lists this year. I wish I'd thought of it myself!" -- New York Times best-selling author Hale Dwoskin, of "The Sedona Method" and "Happiness is Free -- and It's Easier than You Think."

Something For Everyone!.......2007-02-27
I wondered when I first approached this book how well I could do a review since I was not sure if the contents would even hold my attention. I am a simple person and at my age perhaps not one that would be going forth to be a success in business, but I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.
You see, this is a book that is chock full of information that can be used in many areas of one's life, not just in business. The wisdom given and life lessons learned and shared, can be implemented in dreams both large and small in one's own life. Between the pages of this book our author, John Eckberg, compiles for us interviews of some of the most successful business people in the world. His questions are straight forward and asked in such a way that they actually bring the person to answer in a down-to-earth way that is both informative and at times down-right entertaining and always interesting. We hear from names like Donald Trump to Jerry Springer and we even get a little glimpse into their personal tastes with the injection of little sections such as, Books on The Nightstand, and CD's In The Changer.
I have to say this was a really interesting book, written in a free-flowing style, candid and alive and one that you will find some real gems of information to help you succeed in your heart's quest in life.

MidWest Book Review
Easy fast paced reading.......2006-09-23
I read a ton of business books and really look for stand outs. It is difficult to find something new or a different twist. This one has it! It's a quick and easy read but has lots of meat. From Donald Trump, I think I am the only person in the world that likes this guy, to Jeff Baker...all good. I am a trainer and enjoy sharing some of the stories in the book, they are useful in bringing home a point. Good job
practical insights.......2006-07-28
I have been meaning to write a quick review of this book ever since I read it a few months ago just after publication. Normally don't read business books they bore me out of my wits and besides they all trot out the same tired old platitudes souped up with this year's latest buzzwords.
This book however was decidedly different in approach, in tone and in information. It actually has an awful lot of really down-to-earth and practical advice and he also talks to differnt people.. first time I've seen Doobies' and Steely Dan's jeff baxter in the pages of a business book. read it in one sitting then gave it to mty eldest boy who won't listen to a word I say ;-) It's good.
A True Original.......2006-06-27
I loved this book! Very seldom does a business book come along that asks offbeat questions. Eckberg is a confident and informed author. In The Success Effect we are given the rare chance to see the usually guarded business types speak candidly about what makes them tick and how they have become extremely successful. Through a series of interviews the reader is entertained by big names like Trump and Springer. While Eckberg manages, through his unique line of questioning, to mine some real gems.
Uncommonly engaging.......2006-05-18
I reallly like John Eckberg's book. It's got some uncommonly engaging touches for a business book. Each CEO he interviews gets asked some personally revealing details, such as to list what CDs are prominent in his CD rack, and what books are on his nightstand. It humanizes them. And Eckberg shows flair and personality in his questioning, far beyond the usual bottom-line fixations. It ends up peeling back the mask on many of his captains of industry, showing a little of what makes them tick. My only criticism, really, is that some of these mini-profiles are too brief. Just when they're opening up, it's over. But that's a quibble over the book's formatting. This one's a winner.

A must for entrepreneurs.......2006-04-08
A superior book on interpersonal communications, with an emphasis on being persuasive.
The "winning" in the title refers to "winning people over" and to the "win-win" approach that Stettner so energetically advocates.
Proposes a three-step model for effective persuasion: prepare, listen, and then speak. Wisely accentuates the first two stages, which are typically ignored or inadequately addressed by ineffectual persuaders.
Furnishes first-rate material on establishing credibility, employing "the magic of three," listening nonjudgmentally (particularly under less-than-ideal conditions--e.g., when we find the speaker annoying or the message distasteful), asking questions effectively (going well beyond the standard open-versus-closed discussions), and exhibiting enthusiasm.
Highly recommended.
Fascinating, easy-to-use suggestions that really helped me.......2000-02-10
I can honestly say that this book has been a huge help to me in a variety of business situations. I used to dread being selected to run meetings and make client presentations. Stettner's suggestions have given me a lot more confidence and a much stronger ability to organize what I'm saying and make points persuasively. Learning to listen more effectively has also helped me in a number of difficult one-on-one negotiations. Unlike the reader below, I found the book to be well-organized and interesting throughout. Stettner's common-sense approach makes for a refreshingly non-technical read. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Lots of good advice but poorly organized.......1999-10-13
The book is filled with plenty useful advice but it is so poorly organized that its potential effectiveness is marginalized. I had hoped to learn some key strategies and tools to use in a converstation. However, I spent most of my time trying to understand how each little tidbit of advice fit into the bigger picture of actually starting and controlling a conversation. Somewhere amongst all the advise are the key elements to becoming a better communicator but its left to the reader to assemble them into a practical guide to conversation.
A Fine Mastery of Communication Skills.......1999-10-04
I've read many, many books with a somewhat similar topic and I have to truly compliment Mr. Stettner for this one. This book will definitely help you in your daily dealing with people, family members and especially for those working in corporate world. It prepares you and provides pointers that help you strategize your thoughts before speaking. As Mr. Stettner would say "Prepare, Listen and Speak". For my job as a Public Affairs person, I am extremely please with the suggestions in the book. Personally and professional, I value this book as a "wise" investment and one that I will refer back to for a long time.

Customer Reviews:
simple and effective book I have used so many times.......2001-06-08
In my early adulthood, I was incapable of expressing myself well. Merely thinking of impromoptu speaking caused my heart to race and my mind to become blank. I could not write decent timed essays; I would be able to list out several facts but not have a way to organize them into an interesting product. My casual conversations resulted in a like fate: If my dialog was not with someone who shared a deep common interest with me, the conversation was doomed. My lack of conversational skills contributed to my being embarassingly isloated and rather unhappy. I needed a plan. I came across "Conversational Magic" in a second-hand bookstore. It aroused my interest immediately when I discovered the chapter on creating the magic sound of a professional. There I discovered sufficiently in-depth yet practical outlines for telling stories, for giving impromptu speeches, and at least in my mind for writing essays. I was certain that this chapter alone was worth far more than the price of the book. My enthusiasm for this book grew when I attempted writing a trial essay using his simple speechwriting formula. It worked. I realized that I had in this short time mastered something would truly improve the quality of my life. Later I discovered another part of the book that would have a lasting impact on me. It was a simple list of five general conversational topics that, according to research, the most popular people tend to favor. The inspired me to develop a keen eye out for learning interesting historical events as well as current events that could be excellent conversation topics in science, politics, and medicine. In the years that followed, I have referred back to this book often, discovering, for instance, the authors very interesting definition of good humor and many other gems almost hidden by the book's terseness and clarity. Now to respond to the previous review author, I will agree that this book does not describe routines for effective behavior at parties between conversations. Such niceties are described very well in the books by R. Don Steele, and Don Gabor. I would be interested in what Les Donaldson has to say on the subject, but I believe that most people are dissuaded from attending parties because they just don't know what to say while they are there. This book allows you to help yourself alleviating exactly this problem.
Great Hype / Disappointing Follow-up.......2001-05-27
I read this book in the hope that I would be better able to "work a room". Unfortunately, I found little that was helpful. Donaldson's writing style came across to me as prsumptuous and old fashioned. He presented examples that I felt were unbelievable obvious fiction.
Donaldson assumed that his audience is consumed with becoming popular. Time and again he pointed to actions that he claimed would bring me "popularity". He assumed that a conversation is a win or lose activity. He told me what to do to "win my point". What I hope for in a conversation is an opportunity for enjoyable dialogue with other people with no hidden agendas.
I found the book to be very repetitive. In the later chapters I felt that Donaldson was merely rephrasing what he had covered in earlier chapters.
If this book had been helpful I would offer it to another person. After reading it I would be embarassed to do so.
