Pleasantly satisfied.......2007-08-26
I got this book following a 3L friend's suggestion, and feel like it's given me a good strategy for studying and approaching exams my first year, as well as an important "insider" information on how to approach future job possibilities. For those also in the thinking about law school or application phase, Miller incorporates real, beneficial advice from both students and Admissions deans. If you are looking for some perspective on what to expect (either before or after you start), pick up a copy.
Good General Information - But Lacks Depth.......2007-08-23
INTRO
I have read many and varied law school preparation books. To be forward, of all the books I have read, I found this one to be the most overrated. It is indeed useful, particularly if this is your first book on law school and you are interested in a very general overview.
PERSONAL SUGGESTION (*warining* personal opinion)
My strongest suggestion for those interested in law school is this: take one or two years off prior to entering law school to 1) adequately prepare and 2) make a determination whether or not you *really* want to do it. Whether you enroll into a graduate program, work, relax, explore, or engage in charitable activities - give yourself some time to pursue your varied interests. If you ever wanted to start a company, see a particular part of the world, or just take some time to think .. I highly suggest you do that prior to entering law school. If you just completed or are about to complete an undergraduate or graduate program, you might not have this opportunity again. Purge those urges and pursue those interests now while you have a chance.
HIGHLIGHTS
The book provides useful information regarding law school from financing your education to law school etiquette (share your class notes; do not boast about anything; avoid gossip; and never discuss grades). Furthermore, the author provides useful insights on applying for jobs to obtaining internships. Many topics are addressed in the book, and I appreciated the perspectives of former law students to hiring partners at variously sized firms. I do not necessarily agree with the author's suggestion on case briefing, however. I think it would be tedious and time-consuming to read cases using variously colored highlighters. It is better to use simply a pen and underline relevant material.
SUMMARY & CONCLUSION
The information in the book lacks depth but makes up for it for its vast breadth concerning prior to law school, while in law school (year 1, 2, and 3) and after law school. I am confident that most people who have an interest in possibly attending law school will find the book useful.
Great law school preparation.......2007-07-30
This book is a must-have before starting law school. It is easy to read and full of useful tips and information. It is a realistic and well-informed guide to law school. It is especially vital for conquering the first year. I highly recommend this book!
Maybe groundbreaking when it first came out...not anymore.......2007-07-27
I just ended my first year of law school, so I've got a pretty good idea of how useful these kinds of books are. I think this book is useful to keep around. If not for the detailed explanation of much of the law school processes, he keeps a pretty upbeat attitude toward law school, and he uses his real name, unlike the author of another 1L advice book. If you have that upbeat attitude, it is probably gonna keep you chugging along when you are staring into the abyss during your first year.
His dreamboat technicolor highlighting mumbo jumbo is not some voodoo magic that you can only get from his book. It's just one more interesting way to study in an organized manner. I've found that since law school studying is different than undergraduate school, I began to really experiment with different styles of learning, and along the way, you're bound to find a sweet spot if you keep working at it.
Despite what people say about law school being a professional school and how important the work is, making some good friends there will really really help. Just stay cool. Don't try too hard to make friends, and don't try too little either. Work with the professors instead of seeing them as obstacles, which in many ways they can be. That's just part of the gauntlet of law school.
So take this book's advice with a grain of salt, and start to figure it out for yourself as you go along. The only real secret is putting in the hours necessary and then some.
Get a head start on law school, and stay ahead..........2007-07-16
As a future 1L (first year law student) I found Robert H. Miller's Law School Confidential to be an invaluable resource full of insight and encouragement. In Law School Confidential, Robert H. Miller takes the reader from the infancy of their aspirations for a legal education through the rigors of law school and ultimately, for those who complete their education, the search for employment.
With sound advice and practical strategies, Robert Miller helps allay some of the fears that plague those about to begin law school. But this book is not only for those of us who've been accepted to our law school of choice. This book reaches out to everyone considering or finishing up his or her legal education. It takes those contemplating law school step by step through the daunting and lengthy application process. If you find yourself in the midst of your 1L or 2L year, and are looking for a useful guide to studying, test taking, or even the search for meaningful summer work, it covers this as well. And finally, just when you think it's over, when you've donned your cap and gown and crossed over from law student to lawyer, Law School Confidential guides you in your preparation for the bar.
The tenor of the book can be intimidating and there is a certain underlying motivation to set the student "straight" regarding what they're walking into. Though I don't believe the intent is to frighten people away from law school. Instead, Mr. Miller merely hopes to honestly convey the academic challenge that waits, which can often filter into ones personal life. That being said it is important to note that his experience is exactly that, his, which he recognizes and further agrees that each students experience is unique.
Admittedly, I have yet to begin my legal studies and thus putting Robert Miller's advice into action has not been possible. But his book has used the experiences of literally dozens of mentors who've navigated these waters and made it to the other side. While the nuances of my education will surely be different, I feel confident that Law School Confidential has provided me with a strong framework and foundation for success.
This book is by students, for students. So take advantage of it.

Sufficient..........2007-05-17
This sole book was sufficient for me to study and pass the CISSP test. It is easy to read and understand. It should be noted, however, that sample and bonus questions are well below the difficulty level of the real test, and the advanced questions seem to be a lot harder. But overall they do give a pretty decent coverage of all ten CISSP domains.
The CISSP Prep Guide: Gold Edition.......2007-01-10
I first purchased and studied using the excellent book by Shon Harris. It was suggested I also use the 'The CISSP Prep Guide: Gold Edition' to augment my studies. I found this to be excellent advice.
'The CISSP Prep Guide: Gold Edition' explained concepts a little different than Shon's book did. The sample test in the Prep were worded, I feel, closer to the exam. This book covered some concepts in more detail than Ms. Harris. However, I can also say Shon's book covered other concepts in more detail.
I feel both books are necessary to study and pass CISSP.
I passed the exam first try.
Still enough to pass the CISSP.......2006-02-10
I sat for and passed the CISSP test in January 2006. I used the following resources to help in passing the CISSP:
Shon Harris - All-in-One - 3rd Edition - 30%
Official ISC Guide to the CISSP Exam - 15%
Kurtz - CISSP Prep Guide - Gold Edition - 10%
CISSP for Dummies - 5%
Cccure.org - 25%
Other resources - 15%
"The CISSP Prep Guide" by Krutz and Vines was a great tool at helping me pass the CISSP. While the book itself is somewhat dated (and eclipsed by a newer edition), I feel this book still covers over 85% of the topics on the CISSP. I believe of all the books I used to prepare, this book was the best organized. The reading had an easy flow yet was still presented at a decent technical level (not too easy and not too deep).
My weakest CBK is, by far, crypto (even though I've built a 1,000 IPSec tunnels!). This book did the best at making me understand the different components of PKI and the different encryption methods. You may need to supplant the documentation presented for Security Architecture. Overall, I feel the questions were a waste of space (with many errors), and I did not use them to help prepare for the exam.
Overall, if one has a decent comfort level with the 10 domains, this book may be all that is necessary. The book is still relevant and useful.
I give this book 4 pings out of 5:
!!!.!
Excellent CISSP Book and CDROM - Highly Recommended........2005-11-18
Dear All, I recently completed my CISSP review studies, passed the exam, and completed the CISSP endorsement process. This is a very worth while endeavor and, as someone with many years of Internet security and risk management experience, I highly recommend the CISSP certification process for everyone. Reviewing the 10 common bodies of knowledge (CBK) has value for everyone in the IT business and I am very pleased to have taken the time to review the material and complete the exam. For my self-study review, I purchased four books via Amazon: (1) The CISSP Pre Guide - Gold Edition by Ronald L. Krutz and Russell Dean Vines, (2) All-In-One CISSP Exam Guide, Third Edition by Shon Harris, (3) Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP Exam by Susan Hansche, John Berti and Chris Hare, and (4) CISSP Certified Information Security Professional Training Guide by Roberta Bragg. Each of these texts came with a CDROM for practicing test questions on a Windows PC and covered the 10 CISSP CBKs. I found the first three CISSP books in my list to be helpful. Of those three, the most helpful was The CISSP Prep Guide - Gold Edition by Krutz and Vines. This book is concise, well written, and easy to read. The CDROM is excellent and nearly error free. The text is well thought out and informative. I also recommend Shon Harris' book, with reservation. I found it hard to get to the required CISSP information, at times, due to the attempts at humor in the book. The CDROM of sample test questions were also very good, albeit not as rich in features as the book by Krutz and Vines. The Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP Exam by Susan Hansche, John Berti and Chris Hare was a disappointment. This book read just like a cut-and-paste from the Internet and other documents; and the companion CDROM was full of errors and omissions. After a while I stopped using this text book and focused on the first two. I am sorry to say that CISSP Certified Information Security Professional Training Guide by Roberta Bragg was a complete disappointment from every perspective. The CDROM example tests were riddled with errors and omissions. For those interested in my self-study technique, I took each book and studied one (sometimes two) of each of the CBK chapters each day. Then, I repeated the same process for each of the other books, except for the book by Bragg, which was dropped for reasons mentioned. I took all the sample tests repeatedly, before and after and then again. I must have practiced between 4000-5000 sample questions. It was challenging and enjoyable. In summary, I highly recommend Krutz and Vines and also recommend, with reservation, the book by Shon Harris. No single book can cover the entire CBK of the CISSP. The more you study, the better. Best of luck on your CISSP studies. The CISSP is certainly an experience that will improve your knowledge of the field of IT security and benefit the profession at-large.
Goes into details.......2005-03-19
This is a great book. Unlike many other CISSP books, the book goes into details of each topic. For example, chapter 2 of the books provide great details on the Kerberos Protocol, and describes it better that any other CISSP book. The description was so good that it reminded of university days, when we had to learn various algorithm/protocols inside-out. I would recommend this book to anyone. http://validate.sf.net

No where near adequate coverage for the test........2007-07-22
Having read through this book and fully utilizing the practice test I have to say that this book has about 10% to 25% relevance to the material you will actually be tested on. I am so glad that I have years of practical experience, attended the SANS classes and have the original SANS Material.
The tests were not easy and do require you to have intimate knowledge of the material you are being tested on.
This book and the CD of practice questions were a complete waste of time and effort.
More like a Pre Study Guide.......2004-02-10
This is a good book to use if you have never had any experience with security. It's kind of like a GSEC for Dummies. Read this book, and then take the SANS course, and use their materials to prepare for the exam. The SANS course is such an amazing program that really teaches you everything you need to know to not only create the company security policy, but how to set everything up and manage it. Logical and Hands on.
No real bang for your buck.......2003-11-24
I spent a few hours looking through this book at a local bookstore only to come away quite disappointed.
The information contained in this book won't come close to replacing the SANS GIAC course material, nor is it a text I would recommend as a supplement to anyone's study efforts.
The information contained in the book is not only in the GIAC course, but can also be obtained freely on the internet with little effort.
The GIAC certifications focus heavily on hands-on exposure and experience and this is reflected in the testing. This book doesn't take the student to the level of understanding needed to attempt the exams for the GSEC certification.
One must also consider the fact that the GSEC certification is not a stagnant course, the course is always being reviewed and updated to keep it relevant, and if you buy the full online course the GIAC materials are made available to students when updated during their certification period.
It really is unfortunate that this book doesn't deliver what it implies. It brings back memories of the plethora of low value MCSE texts that hit the market when that certification was believed to be the hot ticket to a job. They scraped the surface, but didn't really prepare you to sit in front of a machine and do the job.
If you only want to challenge the certification spend the money on the GIAC texts, not only are they directly applicable to the material tested, they are an excellent future reference.
Helpful, but not enough to attempt the exams.......2003-08-09
The Wiley book is well laid out and the writing is crisp and clear. Mike has a gift to explain a topic well in the minimum number of words and I hope he continues to write on information technology topics and I look forward to his future books.
I had to give the book a low score, two stars, because it fails to meet its purpose. It purports to be a preparation guide for the GIAC GSEC exam series. I wanted to evaluate the book to be sure the content can prepare students for the exam and in my opinion, it is not adequate for that task.
Since the book is useful at an outline level for reviewing the material, I will focus this review on the areas where I believe it falls drastically short in preparing you for the exams. MS Windows Security accounts for 1/7 of the GSEC exam. Sadly, the coverage in the book is apparently based on a very old version of the course. The best advice I can give you is read the course description for day 5 on the web and buy a good, up to date Windows 2000/XP book or two.
There is no coverage in the Prep Guide of the cookbook (hands on) material which is testable as of July 2003 students and beyond. There are hands on questions for every tool that is covered by the cookbook in the exam bank.
The wireless section, appendix B, is testable. I did not see coverage of wireless in the book.
The author speaks authoritatively from time to time about the nature or content of the exam. It is may be dangerous to do this. The exam is dynamically generated. Questions are pulled from subject buckets from an enormous bank of questions. No two exams are ever alike.
Finally, it is important to remember that the GSEC day books are over 2,000 pages and the Hands On cookbook is several hundred pages as well. It is impossible to fully cover that much material in 480 pages, even with a gifted author.
Stephen Northcutt - Director GIAC
Book Description
Each year, 40,000 women apply to law school. Here is the definitive resource to arm them with what they need to know before, during, and after their legal education.
Which law schools help their students succeed? What makes someone a successful law student? What determines a law school graduate's future success? A Woman's Guide to Law School provides the answers, while addressing, specifically, the needs and interests of the female student.
Linda Hirshman's fresh approach gives women the advice they need--information the law schools often won't tell them. Why do admissions tests seem so scary? Which law schools are good for women--and which are not? How do successful students study in the all-important first year? How do successful students make law review? How do they prepare for their first professional job interviews? In addition to these fundamentals, women will learn about the culture of their law schools, including which law faculties make women squirm and which have politics and policies women can embrace. A Woman's Guide to Law School identifies the schools at which women can do their best at every level of status or selectivity, so no matter where you get in, you can pick the best place for you. With statistics and data--as well as stories of successful women law students--A Woman's Guide to Law School will empower women so they can make wise choices and seize control over their own education and careers.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting ideas for critical reading.......2003-08-13
I got this book as a gift from a friend after I had started at a top law school that, according to this author, is not particularly female-friendly. I would never have bought this book on my own because I've never really thought I needed "special" advice as a woman, and I did fine in school. But I am very, very glad my friend gave it to me, and I wish I had read it before starting school.
I found that the book offered a lot of interesting insights. You may agree or disagree with Hirshman's ideas and arguments, but the fact remains that the law school experience for many women (NOT all women) is different because they are women. And Hirshman does give some good, down-to-earth advice about the true nature of the competitive dynamics in law schools, and frankly, a lot of women have more difficulty understanding and thriving in that context. (But don't worry, I realize it's not all women!)
As for those people who rated this book poorly because they disagree with Hirshman -- I myself disagree with some of her assessments. BUT no one says you have to agree with everything an author says, or that a book is only valuable if you agree with it. You're considering law school, after all, and you want to evaluate things critically and think for yourself. Moreover, just because Hirshman is right about some of the more "women-unfriendly" aspects of law school (and she is) doesn't mean that you can't or shouldn't change things. But to change them, you have to understand how things are to begin with. And there are few books that tackle head-on the very real gender dynamics in law schools. Most people ignore them, but they're there. (For instance, in a faculty survey done by the women's organization at my law school, a number of male law professors admitted that they were much more hesitant to develop mentoring relationships with young female students to avoid any awkwardness or suggestion of impropriety. Other professors, male and female, talked about how women did not speak up enough in class.)
So I'd strongly recommend reading this book for women who are considering going or are about to attend law school. Read it before you go because first year is really important, usually the most important year in terms of success in law school.
But DON'T take Hirshman's ideas as a prediction of how your law school experience will be. (For instance, even if I'd read her book before school, I would have chosen to attend the law school I did -- even though it's not a women-friendly place, that wouldn't have stopped me from going to a strong law school and having a good experience there.) Rather, take the book as a series of insights into how a law school experience can be, and incorporate that information into making your experience a positive and successful one.
Don't treat me like a child!.......2003-03-05
I only got through the first few chapters of the book before I was so OFFENDED I had to stop. The author clearly believes she is speaking to an immature and unintelligent audience. This is what cinched it for me:"At lower status law schools, the students of both genders are often the first generation of their families to get a higher education, and even a modest middle-class life seems good to them" (14). Why beat up your readers, Hirshman? I happen to be a first generation law student who is very displeased with the attitude of the book. I do not reccomend this for anyone.
Problematic thesis.......2002-06-15
This book explains how to choose a law school if you are a feminist who wants to go where no one will challenge your views. Hirshman seems to believe that feminist principles will crumble if exposed to any criticism, so she encourages people to choose schools that have lots of feminists, do not have any conservatives (and preferably not many men), and that will never question feminist beliefs. The problem is, lots of people say that the purpose of law school is to have your ideas challenged, and to face and overcome those challenges. Will Hirshman's approach train feminsists who like law school, but aren't very good lawyers?
Offers interesting psychological insight.......2002-02-02
This book offered me the insight and advice that I bought it for. Hirshman essentially breaks down the psychology behind a first year's law school experience and how, as a woman, you can win at this. She doesn't get too hung up on feminist garble (which I was afraid of) but instead makes you realize what to look for, what to take advantage of and how to empower yourself. I admit that I was a hard-sell on the "femscore" ratings for various law schools, but in the text she makes great points about how much that atmosphere of a law school can affect your success as a female student. I've even already began looking at the faculty makeup of my prospective law schools and how many women teach the first year courses.
I didn't give this book 5 stars because the sometimes heavy attention she gives to those "femi" ratings and the reliance she places on questions to ask your law school. Just because they may have more men than women as tenured faculty does NOT mean that they are un-female friendly. Plus, I would hate for any woman to use her ratings SOLELY to determine where to go to school. Perhaps if more women weren't scared away from going to male dominant schools...then there would be less male dominant schools. I guess I believe that if you get too carried away in this material, you become less proactive as a woman entering a male dominated feel. But if you approach the book another way, it will yield a lot of great and useful information when you are about to set out for law school. I'm not there yet, so still have to put Hirshman's advice to the test!
Don't Leave Home Without It.......2000-02-03
If I had a child ( daughter OR SON ) who was thinking of going to Law School I would insist that they not only read this wonderful book, but convince me that they really understood what it has to say. Law school is a serious and costly undertaking to the family and/or freight-payer as well as to the student, male or female. Professor Hirshman thoroughly and in an amusing manner lays out all one needs to know when contemplating this endeavor. Don't leave home without it!

Que's Training Guides, which are endorsed by cramsessions.com as Cramsession Approved Study Material, are the most effective self-study guides in the marketplace, featuring exam tips, study strategies, practice exams, and many more valuable tools for test preparation. This ebook does not include the CD that accompanies the print edition.

Not just another Security Exam book!.......2002-11-14
I have been working on several Security certifications including CompTIA, Cisco and Microsoft, now I have found a new player in the game and finding this training guide has open a whole new world to me.
Unaware of what TICSA certification entailed, before reading this book I went to the website and researched the subject matter as well as found exam objectives and practice exams. I then took that information and compared it to the training guide and found that the authors have taken the exam material one step beyond the exam for this book.
I also found much of the material, whether you want the certification or not, is helpful in everyday network administration. Also the material goes a long way in other exam like Security+ and I could have certainly used this when I took that beta exam.
There are plenty of exercises and practice questions in each chapter, tips throughout the books and warnings and field notes to help in your study. Finally there is a cd-rom with practice exam questions powered by the PrepLogic testing engine giving you a look at the exam before going live. Overall this seems to be a very useful reference manual.

A MUST read.......2007-01-09
Anyone serious about a career in the music business MUST read this book. Even though it is 596 pages, I read it cover to cover in less than a week! This has got to be the most comprehensive guide to the music business ever written. Everything from entertainment law, to launching your career, to pitching your songs, to digital rights and everything in between is covered. There are even chapters on wills, trusts, and estates. An excellent read!
Buy this book to prevent getting ripped off.......2006-05-16
Often when a new band gets offered a contract, they will get slightly ripped off by the record label. But after reading this book, you should have a wide enough understanding of legal terms to avoid getting your balls busted, so to speak. While this book explains everything in a simple way, also read "101 Music Business Contracts" for further legal help.
eye opener for musicians.......2005-08-07
If you are an aspiring musician and have been offered a contract with a label, consider reading this book first. Moore offers in plain language a sober analysis of how the music business works. He discusses issues that many amateur musicians might be unaware of.
Plus, a contract offered to a new, hitherto unsigned band is often badly skewed in favour of the label. The band has very little leverage and it's not a level playing field.
Moore also discusses the typical cut from the royalties. Taken by the label for the cost of promotions. Like mailing free CDs of the band's music to radio stations and reviewers. Unwary musicians often don't realise how much of their already minimal royalties can get eaten up this way.
