No Excuses For Milady.......2007-03-12
As this is the ninth edition of what is alledgedly the most widely used text for beginning estheticians, then the persistent use of mediocre-to-poor science is inexcusable. Doesn't the author consult *anyone* in the scientific/medical community before sending this thing off to the printers? It is *not*, for instance, an established fact that vitamin A protects human beings from cancer of any sort. There is certainly data that looks promising, but that's it. And since vitamin K is manufactured in the intestinal tract, why is paper wasted insisting that students, many of them fresh out of high school, should be memorizing the names of the food sources of this abundant nutrient? Many of these kids struggle with the science that *is* relevent to the profession they hope to enter. My husband is a doctor, I'm an RN, and neither of us has ever used the term "non-striated" muscle. It's "smooth" muscle, for crying out loud! And while I'm on the subject of muscles, absolutely none - not one - healthcare professional I'm acquainted with has ever learned anything about the "belly" of the muscle! No matter - 18 year-old kids have to learn what is not required of first-year medical students. Please. This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.

Most of the chapters are well written and understandable. I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen.

I found this book very well written and easy to understand. Although repetitive at times Mr. George did a good job of explaining both Lean and Six Sigma concepts along with some case studies.

Does not deliver.......2007-05-18
This book does not deliver on its promise.
Though the author may have a lot of experience in manufacturing, it is clear that his knowledge of the services business is very limited. The concepts of six sigma and lean production are very roughly adapted for the service business, to the point that some of the examples result blatantly absurd -- e.g. the one in page 32.
Other very annoying aspect of the book is the number of times the author keeps returning to points such as "why lean needs six sigma and six sigma needs lean", "why services need lean six sigma" etc. The pace of the reading keeps being broken by this endless "commercial breaks".
After being utherly disapointed by George`s book I`m looking for another book on the same subject. Will post another review, here, if I find one that delivers on its promisses.

LSS in the context of service organizations, this is a must read. Highly exceptional introduction with practical examples. the layout of the information provides an organized roadmap for familiarization.
Great blend of Lean & Six Sigma.......2007-05-08
I found this book very practical and well integrated across the Six Sigma and Lean disciplines. Case studies illustrate every principle throughout the book. I have marked mine up with highlights and use it as a reference on a regular basis. It's not the universe of knowledge on either discipline, but is a good synthesis of the two, and helpful for finding the right tools for the problem and accomplishing project goals.

This book is exceedingly helpful in explaining sometimes difficult concepts and providing an integrated, practical framework with which to implement the Lean Six Sigma methodology within a service business. I bought a copy for each of my key staff members and we worked through it together, profiting greatly from the experience.

Milady's Standard Cosmetology Book Rating.......2007-01-03
Good reference book for anyone going through cosmetology training. We purchased the book for my daughter to keep on hand at home since it's the same book used in her class at school. It's very informative and helpful and will be a reference tool once she gets out on her own and needs to refer back to it. I strongly recommend this book for anyone going into the field of cosmetology.
My complaints for local hairstylists.......2006-01-11
For what the book taught hairstylists about cuts for round, and squared faces are totally wrong. If thte hair has to be styled to lift off the forehead, and come forward: All the hairstylists would do is leave bangs to the side of the client's face. Round faces should not have hair on top of hteir head. That is to crop up a spiky hairdo. To place some hair over the ears and cheeks is to make bangs on the side of the client's face. I have no idea what the editor meant by "keep the hair up on one side." I don't think round, and squared faces should have bangs at all.
If you have to take state boards this is the book you will need.......2005-08-21
This book makes certain that you have a good understanding of the material before you take your state boards and this is very important. You probably will not have the same questions on the test, or they may be phrased differently: but the book definatly covers each chapter well!
Comprehensive and Detailed.......2002-07-24
When I was taking Cosmetology back in the 2000-01 school year, they recommended to purchase this version of Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology. They were only available new in Canada and cost [money], and came with the theory book as well. Our teacher also had the old 1996 version of this textbook for sale, used. However, this is a better purchase. There are more pictures and colors, its not as drab as the previous version. I have to disagree with reviewers who said this is not a detailed book, I found it to be quite detailed and informative in its information. The book meant to be used in a classroom setting, where an instructor teachers and elaborates from this book. You cannot read this book and automatically cut hair, that is where the practical aspect of cosmetology comes in, when you are doing it hands on instead of reading. But this is a helpful tool for aspiring apprentices or students in cosmetology, whether you want to learn about Coloring, Perms, whatever the case, this is definately a worthwhile tool to have.

I bought the 1996 version of this book in June of 2000 and within one month I was signed up for cosmetology school. Then I got to school and they used the 2000 edition so I was already prepared. For those who think this book doesn't go into detail please realize that this is a textbook and it is part of a series of books for teaching. There are 2 workbooks that go along with this book. One for Theory and one for Practical. I was given a 1990 edition of this book as well by a friend of mine. The most noticable change between the 3 editions is that the 2000 edition has more actual photographs and fewer illustrations. If you are using this book for school study then I do recommend you buy the state board exam review booklet. Then when you have free time you can quiz yourself. Just remember that this book is meant to be used along with an instructor. If you are looking for a haircutting book only then I don't think you want this one. It only has about 12 pictures.

It is nice that we finally have an updated book..........2005-08-21
I felt that the book was basically the same as the previous edition, with the exception of aromatherapy, and electric filing. Unfortionatly no one book can give all of the information that is required about a subject. That is what teaching is all about. I generally supplement the material from other books, and Florida law so our students stay on the right path. Over all I would have to say that this book was above average, and addressed many of the changes in the industry to date.
Good Intentions Gone Bad.......2003-04-02
I have taught for years and have been impressed by Milady's dedication to the Industry, until now. This new text book was headed in the right direction, with the addition of some fantastic photos for nail diseases, but it missed it's usual high standards drastically. The chapters, especially those most important to the foundation of education, such as sanitation issues and safety issues towards clients, fall far too short. A school is intended to give the basis of a long and safe career in this industry, yet this book irresponsibley dedicated more time to air brushing (which is difficult at best to learn via a book) then it did to the fundamentals of salon safety for both the tech and the client. I am very very disappointed. The chapters seem to be started off in the right direction, then are seemingly cut severly short. The book is choppy and incomplete at best. Sad to see such unprofessional results from a long time industry leader who has continually been the one who set the standards and raised the bar.

This is a great book which tackles most of the difficult issues confronting service organizations (as opposed to manufacturing) as they strive for excellence.
As a key player in the field of Process Management I am keenly aware of the cause of failure for most service businesses. The primary defect in in many service businesses is that they often lack Customer Focus.
This book brings the issue of customer focus onto center stage by discussing the concepts of value as the core basis for successful brand development. In addition to very good philosophical discussions the book also provides several useful tools such as TRIZ and Service Process Management that are essential for DFSS deployment in a service environment. The book also has good examples that illustrate application of the tools. It would be great if several complete case studies can be provided in a future edition.

Excellent Guide.......2005-07-03
As a former business manager and a current marketing executive, I've had extensive experience in various sectors of the service industry. What makes customers come back? What puts a brand name that everyone recognizes on a product or service? Starbucks doesn't serve a radically different product from a no-name coffeeshop, but it takes quite a bit of market savvy and good business management for success in the service industry. This book gives the answers for success in three most important aspects of this industry: consistently good quality of products/services, efficient management of the delivery process, and positive customer/provider interactions. It's not the backing of a rich uncle and the hiring of supermodels to film commercials that distinguishes the best from the mediocre, it's correct management and good service methods. Out of all the books I've read on the topic, this is certainly one of the best.

Like the closely related workbook (sold separately), this stands out due to the lack of competition.
Its comprehensiveness and accessibility exists without comparative examples.
Again, one unproven resource always will helps if no other exists.
