Book Description
The Advanced Planner and Optimiser (APO) is the software from SAP dedicated to supply chain management. This book provides an overview about the supported SCM processes and explains how to implement APO in a company. It is written from a long years' experience in implementation projects and provides project managers and team members with the necessary know-how for a successful implementation project. The focus of the book is on introducing modelling approaches and explaining the structure and interdependencies of systems, modules and entities of APO based on the release mySAP SCM 4.1. Another concern is the integration with R/3, both technically and from a process point of view. Since APO projects differ significantly from other SAP projects, some key issues and common mistakes concerning project management are mentioned as well.

Book Description
Supply Chain Management concerns organizational aspects of integrating
legally separated firms as well as coordinating material
and information flows within a production-distribution network.
Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) systems being used for
transaction handling and order execution in most firms today have
been supplemented by Advanced Planning Systems (APS) for
coordinating flows, exploiting bottlenecks and keeping due dates.
This book provides insights regarding the concepts underlying
APS. Special emphasis is given to modelling supply chains and
implementing APS in industry successfully. Understanding is enhanced
through the use of case studies as well as an introduction to the solution
algorithms used.
For the third edition the content of the book has been updated
thoroughly taking into account latest APS software developments,
research results and experiences with APS implementation projects.
Two new case studies have been added resulting in a total
of six case studies now covering a wide range of industrial sectors
and ideas to implement APS successfully. Finally, a new chapter on "Purchasing & Material
Requirements Planning" complements the description of APS.
Customer Reviews:
Advanced Planning.......2006-06-24
Any review of supply chain management in general has to begin with Michael Porter's 1985 (now available in a 1998 edition) best seller "Competitive Advantage." For software, one would begin with Christopher Koch's "The ABCs of Supply Chain Management" where he states "Supply chain management software is possibly the most fractured group of software applications on the planet. . . . No one has a complete package." and then move on to the EDIGuys "Supply Chain Information Systems" for specifics on the background, buzz, and hype. But, if you are interested in applying modelling and associated quantitative methods (Advanced Planning) to the supply chain management paradigm, then there is probably no better place to begin than Stadtler and Kilgers book. They lead you through concepts to implementation with six case studies from various industries. And, the supplementary material covering forecast methods, linear and mixed integer programming, genetic algorithms, and constraint programming is invaluable.

A very broad view of Supply Chain Management and APS.......2002-01-14
This book will give every reader a very good view of the Supply Chain Management concepts. It will take the reader from the Strategic point of view, through the Demand Planning Systems to the Advance Planning Systems. A very good book to put every concept into a global perspective, with some case studies that will help the reader to make the transition from the theory to the pratical aspect of Supply Chain Information Systems.
State-of-the Art thinking on Supply Chain Management.......2001-10-11
I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the high quality and standard of the book, Supply Chain Management and Advanced Planning. It reflects state-of-the-art thinking as well as current views, and contains up-to-date case studies of supply chain management and advanced planning systems. There is no doubt that the authors are working at the cutting edge of the supply chain management field. They show intimate knowledge of practical advanced planning applications as well as implementation issues around a variety of commercially available software systems.
Recent information technology developments have changed modern manufacturing organizations dramatically. We have witnessed the introduction of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, such as SAP and BAAN, aimed at integrating internal processes in an organization. These systems cut across multiple functional areas and provide a corporate wide database with all the relevant data of an organization. Many believed that these systems would address all the problems and lead to drastic improvements of business performance. This focus on internal processes, however, was not sufficient since, in a sense, it was not able to cope with the exceptions and with the variability that confront organizations on a daily basis. State-of-the-art planning procedures, provided by Advanced Planning Systems (APS), are required to allow organizations to reduce the amount of exceptional situations. An APS exploits the environment created by ERP systems and this has created major breakthroughs in enterprise wide planning. The impact has spread wider to collaborative planning amongst supply chain partners. This book is devoted to Advanced Planning Systems, the concepts underlying these, the current limitations of APS, how it links and interacts with ERP systems, what is required for successful implementation, etc. Through using, testing and implementing APS modules developed by companies such as i2 Technologies, J.D. Edwards and SAP A.G., the authors gained many insights. Practical real-world experiences are captured in the various chapters of the book.
This book covers an immense quantity of Supply Chain Management material. It is presented in a logical and easily understandable way. Here and there it is obvious that the authors are not fully comfortable with English but it is not very distracting. The book is comprehensive and the different aspects of supply chain management are outlined in great detail. I found the book a real pleasure to work through. What impressed me most was the ease with which the authors of the various chapters dealt with complex and sometimes very interrelated supply chain aspects. From a personal point of view, the emphasis on quantitative tools to assist and improve planning was very encouraging. This is something that is not recognized and appreciated enough. This book is a must for every logistics professional. Buying this book will be a worthwhile investment!
Good reference for advance supply chain management analyst.......2001-07-26
It is very good reference for all analyst to have this book. It explain the detail configuration to achieve optimum supply chain effectiveness. At the end of this book, it introduces also solutions for advance planning by several high-end vendors such as J.D. Edwards etc.

An excellent textbook !!!.......2004-03-17
Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and Management is not only a complete and current reference for professionals involved in water distribution systems but also an essential textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses. In fact, what makes this book different is that it contains from basic hydraulic concepts up to the most recent researches and experiences in a comprehensive language.
A practical text for real world practice.......2004-03-10
Haestad Methods has provided an excellent text for practical use by engineers. This text is best used in combination with Haestad Method's WaterCAD Software, but still provides enough to be valuable to any engineer who works with water distribution systems. This book is an improvement over the previous "Water Distribution Modeling" text and effectively replaces it. This book is a very useful resource for any civil engineering office that designs water distribution systems. The WaterCAD software program is also fantastic.
Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and Management.......2004-03-05
Thank-You Haestad Mdthods for developing such a wonderful program. I use this book as a guide almost everyday.
Great reference for the professionals of water distribution.......2004-03-04
This texttbook, that I recently reviewed, was for me a great experience. This is a must have book for any Civil consultant involved in hydraulics. It is both a guide to water modeling and a practical reference to water distribution operation and management. Thanks Haestad Methods.
The Best "How To" Book on Modeling.......2004-03-03
This reference has given us an edge in satisfying client needs from the simplest capacity study to the most complex model. It has helped make our competent modelers more efficient and the up-and coming modeler function like a pro. Many common questions and problems are anticipated and clearly answered. Because the book so thoroughly covers system management issues, I believe many parts should be required reading for water resources engineers.

Book Description
This textbook provides a comprehensive modeling, reformulation and optimization approach for solving production planning and supply chain planning problems, covering topics from a basic introduction to planning systems, mixed integer programming (MIP) models and algorithms through the advanced description of mathematical results in polyhedral combinatorics required to solve these problems. This book addresses solving real life or industrial production planning problems (involving complex production structures with multiple production stages) using MIP modeling and reformulation approach. It is based on the twenty years worth of research in which the authors have played a significant role. One of the goals of this book is to allow non-expert readers, students in business, engineering, applied mathematics and computer science to solve such problems using standard modeling tools and MIP software. To achieve this the book provides an introduction to MIP modeling and to planning systems, as well as a unique collection of reformulation results, integrating them into a comprehensive modeling and reformulation approach, as well as an easy to use problem-solving library. Moreover this approach is demonstrated through a series of real life case studies, exercises and detailed illustrations. Graduate students and researchers in operations research, management, science and applied mathematics wishing to gain a deeper understanding of the formulations and mathematics underlying this approach will find this book useful because of its detailed treatment of the polyhedral structure of the basic lot-sizing problems and simple mixed integer sets that arise in more complicated problems. Reading this book will allow the reader to improve formulations of non-standard MIP models much more effectively and produce state-of-the-art models and algorithms.

Book Description
In the second half of the twentieth century, increasing efforts were made towards containing and cleaning contaminated groundwater. A number of techniques can be used to achieve such goals, traditionally either by treating or isolating the soil in situ, or by removing it for washing or disposal. However, such technologies tend to be accompanied by high energy consumption, and can lead to new environmental problems. Therefore, more efficient and economical techniques are needed to remediate contaminated soil and groundwater. Advanced groundwater remediation contains a selection of the most up-to-date research results on reactive barrier and pump-and-treat techniques, with the main focus on heavy metal removal. After dealing with general issues of groundwater remediation using active and passive processes, remediation engineering practice is discussed, with the emphasis on chromium remediation, innovative applications, engineering design and performance monitoring. There is particular focus on sorptive removal and on natural processes, including metals loading on sorbents, sorption mechanisms, monitored natural attenuation and phytoextraction. This book will contribute to improving groundwater quality: firstly, through enhanced efficiencies in research investment, by avoiding needless overlap/competition between approaches; secondly, by achieving a clearer recognition of situations for which a particular approach is best suited, and of the specialist capabilities essential to the informed delivery of each; and finally, by achieving recognition for the value and maturity of the whole field of groundwater remediation.

Customer Reviews:
Tons of Theory & Buzzwords, Zero practical application.......2003-12-19
Lots of talk about "mushroom-shaped business models" and "value constellations", and maybe 1 good framework that is useful (the phases of supply chain efforts).
Everything worthwhile is in the first couple of chapters - after that it devolves into hypothetical mumbo-jumbo without a supporting case study in sight.
Great if you want to examine the possibilities, but it smacked of the late-90's "any business model is possible" thinking.
Lots of stuff like "in the future, businesses will have to choose who in their supply chain will do all the purchasing for every company, and share costs and revenues". It sounded a lot like Marx's "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need."
I was looking for practical advice on how to move my company forward. I wasted 2 five-hour flights reading this.
Do you Have a Supply Network?.......2003-11-19
A useful and thought provoking text for supply / purchasing professionals looking for inspiration on how to improve their organisation, no matter how basic their organisation is - everybody has to start somewhere. Although mainly focussed on consumer / FMCG corporations Poirier writes in an entertaining and logical way, with plenty of case references to exemplify what he is explaining. Very relevant in these times of technicological change, poirier also explains how the web can enable supply networks to create a virtual "glass pipeline" of information.
A "must read" if you are serious about transforming your organisation.
Highly Recommended!.......2001-08-02
Cheers to Charles C. Poirier, who took a topic that almost cries out for unintelligible jargon and undecipherable graphs, and instead laid it plain, in common English, for all to understand. His essential notion: To achieve efficiencies you must develop a closer working relationship with the vendors that make up your supply chain. The goal is to share real-time inventory and production data so that your network of business partners - Poirier's supply-chain constellation - is better able to meet the end needs of the consumer. The major shortcoming of the book lies in its omission of information-based companies from its analysis. How can knowledge industry firms integrate their less tangible supply chains, and will they reap the same rewards as widget-makers if they do? Regardless, we [...] strongly recommend this book to anyone not an expert in the latest logistics-management techniques - and, unfortunately, that's almost everyone.
Sustained advantage through a customer focused approach.......2001-01-23
I felt that this book made some good points and presented a good framework for identifying where you are and where you need to get to. His framework of 4 levels of supply chain optimization: Sourcing & logistics and Internal excellence which are internal in nature and Network construction and Industry leadership which are external in nature contains some valid points. One point is the need to sequentially move through the levels instead of trying to jump right to the end. Another point is the need to continue moving in order to succeed. His point that all participants must share benefits from supply chain optimization is very accurate. I have seen at least 2 health care supply chain optimization efforts fail because of this issue. Finally, he doesn't claim that building a sustained competitive advantage is simple and he certainly doesn't try to give a cookbook approach for achieving it. A sustained competitive advantage is not a static achievement, it can only be maintained by taking an external view of supply chain optimization that is focused on building a value added community (or alliance) that enables: rapid, interactive, and successful product design and introduction; global available-to-promise capability with completely visible inventory; ability to assemble, build, or configure diverse components into a finished order; features of mass customization in the finished offering; a glass pipeline for viewing availability and flow of goods and services; analytical and financial feedback loops that accurately measure progress; continuous learning and improvement; etc....
Buzzwords.......2000-04-26
As Theodore Levitt observed "man lives not by bread alone but mostly by buzzwords". Little substance here. Like many books of its type would have been much better if it was 1000% shorter.
