5 out of 5 stars Clean Up Time.......2007-04-30

This book makes me think of the John Lennon 1980 classic, "Clean Up Time."

This is an excellent book geared for the adolescent or tween on the autism/Asperger's spectrum. I like the way it tackles topics such as body development; hormonal changes; basic grooming and bathroom etiquette such as when boys use urinals.

I like the way vignettes were provided using different voices, e.g. first, second, third person. Prompts such as visual cues and other teaching tools are included. This author wisely suggests using a similar approach in teaching preschoolers good grooming habits and the rationale for same.

This book is for the adult instructor and young pupil alike. The drawings are discreet and appropriate and are not likely to make a young person feel embarrassed or threatened.

The tone of this book is plainly quite instructional, which is often a good approach with the a/A population. People with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) have been called "little professors" and often seek informational books and present discussions in an informtional format. This book does a good job of recognizing this trait and responding to it accordingly.

I highly recommend this book for parents, educators and young people. It is an important work and valuable resource tool.

5 out of 5 stars Suitable for boys and girls on the autism spectrum.......2005-06-05

My son turned ten a few months ago so I decided Personal Hygiene and Puberty were topics we needed to delve into. I am very glad I purchased this book since it covered Deodorant, shaving, growth spurts and using a urinal.

My 10 year old is high functioning and his almost nine year old sibling is non-verbal and could benefit from some of the chapters as he gets older.

Throughout the book the stories are told in various points of views, either in the first, second or third person. Visual cues, communication aides and assistive technology is shown within the chapters. Mary also suggests starting self-care skills as young as three for brushing teeth and washing hands.

One thing to note is that the fonts change throughout the book. The pages that discuss developing a program and teaching various skills are presented in an easy to read manner, mostly for the adults teaching the curriculum. The remaining pages are activities and social stories that have larger fonts that are bolded. This seems to be easier to follow for my son as well.

All the diagrams inside are in black and white, plus the cover is not overstated and should not be embarassing to a pre-teen or teen.

Your student or child will not read about birth control, sexual intercourse, reproduction or sexually transmitted diseases. It is recommended to supplement this curriculum as the students become young adults. I was glad to know these issues would not be covered, yet my son ran into two words when looking up puberty in the dictionary - reproductive and sexually.

He was disappointed not to find a glossary, but liked learning about growing a mustache and how old he would be when he finally gets to high school.

None of the steps listed in the book are numbered, which I think is a good thing so the students do not get stuck on certain numbers instead of the actual steps.

The information presented is repetitious in nature, but that is needed when teaching children on the autism spectrum. There is plenty of room for note taking and creating your own social stories. This book is a useful tool for families, teachers and therapists to instill these vital lessons to children with autism.

Product Description

TEACHING MATH TO PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME is the book that everyone has been waiting for! Now parents and educators can use this guide to teach meaningful math to students--with and without learning problems--who struggle with understanding computation, number concepts, and when and how to use these skills. The author, an experienced educator, was inspired to write TEACHING MATH to meet the needs of hands-on learners after observing the difficulty her adult son with Down syndrome and his peers had in applying math skills to everyday life. For years, the math program explained in TEACHING MATH has been successfully used with preschoolers, children, and adults with Down syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other cognitive disabilities. Its success lies in capitalizing on the visual learning strengths of these concrete learners and using manipulatives, games, and activities to teach and maintain motivation. A key feature of this method is the early introduction of the calculator, which allows students to progress in their understanding of math without having to memorize math facts. This book can be used to help students learn the critical math survival skills needed for living independently or help students in their math curricula at school. Book I covers introductory math skills typically taught in preschool or elementary school, but which many older students still need help with, including: Number sense Recognizing and writing numerals Time Calculator skills Counting Measurements Addition Place value Shapes Subtraction Money The second volume of TEACHING MATH will focus on more advanced math skills needed for independent living, including multiplication, division, banking, budgeting, and consumer skills. TEACHING MATH gives parents and teachers high-interest, hands-on strategies and ideas for teaching math to learners of all ages.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good resource.......2007-09-14

I have been going through this quite exhaustive resource over the past couple days. It seems to be very good in content and I think I will enjoy using this with my daughter who has FAS.

The reproducible pages are great; however, I am finding it difficult to easily reproduce them since they don't lie flat. That's really the only qualm I have. It may help to also have this available in a spiral or binder format, to make the necessary reproducibles easier to reproduce!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Hands on Learners.......2007-05-06

I ordered this book to be able to work with a student who has severe brain damage and is not Down's. The activities are ones that would benefit all students, not just special needs. The activity on money and purchasing was really effective in helping my student understand the value of items and how to figure out change.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Math to People With Down Syndrome and Other Hands-On Learners: Basic Survival Skills (Topics in Down Syndrome).......2006-03-19

This is an awesome book! It gives you a step by step proven method that is almost fail-safe for teaching any concrete learner to understand math and math concepts. The only problem with this book is the misconception that the title relays in that it is not just for children with Down Syndrome. It is the method I use to teach all developmentally delayed children. I recommend it to everyone with children with delays.

Book Description

Why did we write it? Because they don't teach it in school. There are basic skills that every person MUST know in order to function in the real world—and it's all "Cool Stuff." We like to refer to these skills as the "fundamentals of life."

In sports, the difference between winning and losing can simply be your grasp of the game's fundamentals. Whether we play sports or not, we're all participants in the game we call "life"--which is the most important game we'll ever play. Do we want to win this game? Of course we do!

Here's the problem: We can have all the enthusiasm and all the passion in the world, but if we don't get the basics down first, all that energy is wasted. The same is true for life. Without knowing the fundamentals you'll probably get hurt and you definitely won't be having fun.

"Cool Stuff" they should teach in school reveals these fundamental skills of life in a fun, easy-to-read format.

After all, why stumble into the real world when you can cruise in … with styyyyle?!

4 out of 5 stars "Cool Stuff" They Should Teach in School.......2007-07-15

Cool Stuff they should teach in school is a guide to jobs, people skills, goals, and money for young adults written by two normal teenagers. This book covers everything from trying to figure out what you want to do with your life and how your attitude actually determine how successful you'll be through how to make a good impression and what not to do during a job interview to how to manage your money and how to make your savings work for you.

I loved the conversational style of this book as well as the straightforward no punches pulled advice. I also liked the colourful Cool Stuff quotes and 2K tips. This is the advice your best friend would give you if he could. Cool Stuff they should teach in school will make a really great gift for any teenager or young adult needing just a little bit of nudge to start their future on the right track.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth exploring by students & freshmen...to help face a multitude of real-world challenges.......2006-08-08

From the standpoint of intent, scope & substance, this wonderful book is exactly similar to 'The Power of Focus for College Students' by Andrew Hewitt & Luc D'Adabie. I have reviewed this latter book earlier.

The 'Cool Stuff' book is apparently targetted at high school students (& graduates). The 'Power of Focus' book is targetted at high school graduates & college students, even though the delineation is really not an issue. The earlier book is written by two brothers during their late teen years, in 2004. The latter book, which has been published one year later, is written by two university graduates in their early twenties. This book is also an extension of the earlier 'The Power of Focus' by Les Hewitt, Jack Canfield & Mark Victor Hansen, which is obviously targeted at adult professionals.

Essentially, the 'Cool Stuff' book is designed to help students GET REAL...to help them face a multitude of challenges as they grow from teens to young adults & while they move into the real world. The abundant information in this book are packed into bite-sized nuggets, illustrated with zany graphics.

Whereas, the 'Power of Focus' book is more sober of the two books, with abundant information, as well as inspiring stories, packed into nine focusing strategies. Tactically, it has been designed to help high school graduates & college freshmen in finding fulfilling career pathways.

While the 'Cool Stuff'book has a more light-hearted approach, both books generally help to answer these critical questions:

- why 70% of graduates are unhappy & disillusioned within five years of leaving college?
- what 3% of Yale students do that lead them to become wealthier than the other 97% combined?

One interesting point: The entrepreneurial flair of the authors of both books is exemplified by their own respective websites: namely ccolstuffmedia & focusedstudent, which continue to promote their books, seminars & workshops & other stuff.

One last point: The 'Power of Focus' book has a seemingly subtle & yet direct slant towards 'GET RICH' partly because of its association with Donald Trump...so it's also designed to help you build the financial future you so desire.

To sum up my review, both books are really great stuff! If you are a high school student or college freshman, I strongly urge you to go & get a copy to read & to learn how to maximise your high school - & college - experience & also how to deal with a rapdily changing world out there!

5 out of 5 stars awsome book.......2006-07-20

great book for anyone feeling lost as far as what they want to do with their lives. It makes it really easy to understand all the financial stuff in today's world. I used some of the people skills they have written about and noticed improvemnt.

this book = miracle

5 out of 5 stars "Cool Stuff" They Should Teach In School.......2006-05-25

I picked up this book this week-end TO "BROWSE" and found myself into the book one hour later, still reading. WOW!!! I sure wish there would have been a book like this for my age group. But, I'm learning a thing or two even now with reading Kent and Kyle's book. This book is a must for any family with teens, pre-teens or adults still wanting to grow. I'm going to buy a copy for our church library, too. What an inspiration this book is-----for everyone! Thanks for writing it.

5 out of 5 stars These guys rock.......2006-05-03

I am 17, and this book was so inspirational. I feel like I am ahead of the game, and that I will be able to face challenges in life no matter what they are. This is also a great book because it was written by guys about my age, so I totally understand what they are talking about, because they went through the same stuff I am. This book is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible Resource For Those Dealing with AD(H)D Student.......2000-04-08

This book is an invaluable aide for parents, educators, and professionals dealing with the challenges faced by AD(H)D students in school. It is a book that can be given directly to students as well. Written in a clear, visually appealing format, it presents worksheets and quick exercises that guide the late grade school, middle school or high school student to an understanding of how this disorder affects their ability to learn. It provides information such as how to choose and adopt various study techniques that will help children with AD(H)D become successful students. It coaches students in using active study techniques to remember what they read, or to develop written reports. Students are not resistant to using the concepts because of how they are presented and is a book that has application to non ADHD students as well. I highly recommend this workbook and have found it much more much more useful that the "Putting on the Brakes" book by the same authors. Of all the self help books I have lent out to people, this is one that people use so much they forget to return it! I just keep buying more copies because I don't want to be without the book.

4 out of 5 stars It makes sense to my students!.......2000-03-25

"Putting on the Break" has helped several of my students/clients understand what is really happening when they can not stop. One student's mom said, "This is the first time I see Laura interested in a book, any book. She explained why she has trouble paying attention like a pro. Thanks." The book gives the children a perspective they can relate to. Adults can be too wordy, the books helps them "see" and "feel" about ADHD. Thanks for making the book available in Spanish. We need more for the Spanish- speaking population.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Patients With Low Literacy Skills.......2000-09-20

This book is truely a classic in the field of patient education. Everyone who teaches patients/clients should read this book as much of what is written for patients -- can't be read by them. The number of illiterate and poor readers in this country is unbelievable yet this is sledom taken into consideration by health professionals. I had the pleasure to attend an all day seminar given by Cecilia and Leonard Doak years ago and have used their lessons since.

5 out of 5 stars Bring health messages down to earth.......2000-06-13

I wish I could tell everybody who has ever produced any kind of health information material to read this book. The advice it gives has helped me write more clearly period - not just for people with low literacy. Given the overwhelming amount of about health care information in the news and on the Web, health communicators need to make their messages accessible and meaningful or get lost in the shuffle. This book shows you how.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE classic in patient ed!.......1999-04-28

This book is misnamed. It shows you not only how to teach patients with low literacy skills--but all patients!

Teaching Patients With Low Literacy Skills shows you how to apply current research findings to actively involve your learner and enhance understanding and retention. It shows you how to prepare written and audiovisual materials so they most effectively teach.

Best of all, the Suitability Assessment of Materials form helps you evaluate teaching materials, quantitatively, so you invest your limited patient ed dollars wisely in the best teaching tools.

It's the classic in the field. This is the book everyone else quotes. Including me.

5 out of 5 stars THE reference manual for anyone working with adult learners........1997-07-17

Thank you for this most useful manual in helping us understand the barriers to learning and how to overcome them. I work in a Family Practice Residency in which many of our patients have low literacy skills. We use this text to evaluate our spoken words and written texts offered to our patients. I was asked to summarize one of the chapters to present at a meeting, and found this text can't be summarized...it is already as concise as it can be made, with every word necessary.

We ordered several teaching tools shown in the later chapters and have found them to be helpful as well.

We checked out the text from our Health Science Library, liked it so well we got one of our own for the office, and I just bought one for myself to keep at home

Dale Carnegie, step aside--this sharply designed, itty-bitty handbook aims to give you, in 72 pages, all the key strategies you need to get along with and manage people in the workplace... and sometimes even succeeds! Here, with the help of lots of snappy sidebars, graphics, checklists, and charts, you'll learn how to develop basic people skills like understanding human behavior, building people's confidence, and gaining their trust; develop the people you manage in the workplace by providing training, improving their skills, nurturing talent, motivating progress, and teaching by example; find solutions to thorny "people problems" like how to build positive work environments, open closed minds, handle conflict, and deal with "difficult types"; and assess your people's performances and reward them accordingly. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so damned cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

5 out of 5 stars Keys to the file cabinet of management wisdom!.......2001-02-19

While your ability to manage improves with experience, this 72-page mini-guide will help you to master the fundamentals of successful management techniques. This book is filled with practical techniques to show you how to influence behavior and build positive interpersonal relationships in the workplace.

Through an understanding of why people behave in certain ways, you can use practical techniques to resolve conflicts and build a committed, motivated team.

"Natural instinctive behavior is not always appropriate in the workplace." pg. 6

Robert Heller shows how people adopt instinctive modes of behavior. This includes: reacting emotionally, avoiding risks, fighting under threat, spreading gossip, competing for status, dwelling on past successes, feeling more comfortable in small groups, drawing conclusions and fragmenting into small warring groups.

In order to encourage cooperation, Robert suggests that appropriate behavior must be followed. This includes: establishing facts, taking risks, encouraging non-combative relationships, insisting on detailed analysis before judgment, practicing total open communication, recognizing achievement not status, learning from mistakes and choosing to work in cooperative groups.

Robert Heller is a leading authority on management consulting. He shows how people have higher needs, such as pride in work. People want to feel valued. This book will show managers how to help employees build confidence, communicate clearly and achieve their potential. Through case studies and assessment tests, managers can find solutions to major workplace situations.

I have never read such an enjoyable book on management. This holds many keys to wisdom. This tiny book will help you develop first-class people skills.

Book Description

If you have ever wished you had the equivalent of a "Nanny 911" to defuse tensions in the office, your wish has come true. 151 Quick Ideas to Deal With Difficult People is the ultimate guide on how to face challenging employees and coworkers.

The extensive topics in this book deal with how to handle characters ranging from Bunglers to Backstabbers to Bullies. Few books on difficult employees, if any, offer such an extensive assortment of the characters you're likely to encounter at work and how best to deal with them.

When faced with difficult employees, too often managers and coworkers lack the skills for handling the stressful encounters, so they throw up their hands in complete exasperation. Well, all that ends with this book. You'll learn how to:
* Keep problem employees from setting the tone in the office.
* Take steps to turn troublemakers into team players.
* Keep them from demoralizing or scaring away other employees.
* Know when to cut your losses.
* Avoid hiring troublemakers in the first place.
* Confront bullies, harassers, and ageists.
* Keep a backstabber from sabotaging your career.
* Keep an aggressive colleague from commandeering your meeting.
* Deal with colleagues who infringe on your time.

Because the information in this book is so concise and practical, you'll refer to it again and again. Whether you are a manager or a coworker of difficult employees, the advice will give you the tools to better supervise problem workers or the confidence to stand up to them. You will no longer live in fear of an aggressive employee ruining your day.

2 out of 5 stars Lacks substance and structure.......2007-06-25

While each of the 151 ideas are brief and well written, I found a lack of substance or meaningful insight. Basically, it is a listing of common sense items without structure and of limited value.

5 out of 5 stars Makes a lot of sense........2007-04-27

I just got this book yesterday and went through most of it. I thought it would be helpful for my son-in-law who has a small business. But I think the little tips will work for more than the work place. The author uses very clear examples of what causes problems in the office environment. But in some cases, the same is true for classrooms or even with kids. A lot of it is good common sense you just need somebody to point out. The author did a very good job of that.

Have you ever agonized over how to handle a bully in the workplace--with pie-in-the-face retribution or a saintly smile? "The 100 people you'll meet on these pages," Muriel Solomon teases in her introduction to this hard-hitting and entertaining guidebook, "should be founding members of E.O.O.--Equal Opportunity Offenders. They show no bias. They are as obnoxious to their bosses as they are to their bookkeepers." But the teasing segues into practical advice for those seeking to do their work in--if not kind circumstances--at least unthreatening ones.

Designed as an at-a-glance reference tool, this 10-part guide describes 10 kinds of culprits, from tyrants, bullies, and sadists to the pushy and presumptuous to connivers and camouflagers. Each type is first defined, allowing for a peek inside the heads of both victim and victimizer and offering a helpful strategy for facilitating tactful dialogues that serves as excellent advice for diffusing workplace tensions and hostilities.

You may recognize these types as thorns in your side or--worse--real threats to your sense of well-being and work performance. This reference book packs a wallop, not only restoring your self-esteem but allowing you to create better relationships with the people at work who make your life miserable. Working with Difficult People may not disarm the despicable, but it will supply you with the ammunition you need to put the control back in your camp.

Found the book difficult to follow and read. The book reads more like a dictionary.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for Dealing With People At Work.......2005-05-30

Solomon (not King Solomon, but does have some of his wisdom) has written a good book for dealing with workers of three different classes: bosses, colleagues, and subordinates. The book is also broken down into 10 major areas in dealing with all three types:

    1. Hostile/Angry.
    2. Pushy/Presumptuous.
    3. Deceitful/Underhanded.
    4. Shrewd/Manipulative.
    5. Rude/Abusive.
    6. Egotistical/Self-Centered.
    7. Proscrastinating/Vacillating.
    8. Rigid/Obstinate.
    9. Tight-Lipped/Taciturn.
    10. Complaining/Critical.

    Each section also contains:

    1. A brief definition of the person and the personality characteristics typically displayed.
    2. Hypothetically what you may be thinking of that person.
    3. What the person hypothetically may be thinking about you and the work place.
    4. A strategy for dealing with that person.
    5. Tactical talk - suggested actual words you may use.
    6. Closing tips on what else you can do.

I enjoyed the narrative's smooth flow and practical advice. However, I sometimes believe the author treated the situation and offender with kid gloves. In today's work environment, bosses, colleagues, and subordinates have to be decisive and firm with problem employess who threaten to disrupt a work environment that is already tense due to the nature of work and long hours put in by many employees. Sometimes you just have to either let people go or put them in a situation where they will have to adjust their behavior to get along!

I would recommend the book as a primer, not the last word on workplace relations. There are other ones out there (John Maxwell, Max Dupree, Larry Burkett, etc.) who may give more substantative advice on dealing with people in the work place. Still a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Learn the art of Communicating........2003-09-17

Well, Well, I find this book 'terrific' to say the least.
The arrangement of text(especially 'capitals') is simply wonderful. I learnt more and educated myself in the process. It was more like reading a novel. I would highly recommend you to read this book, but keep it away from the sight of 'Co-workers/Boss(for your own good!). I wish I could have a video of this book, I mean it would definitely help. Words once uttered, cannot be taken back, so it is better to polish it so that it conveys the intended meaning and gets the appropriate results when dealing with not only 'Difficult people' but everybody.
After some time, you will enjoy working with 'Difficult people', because they are usually the ones who have talents that have been overlooked. Take heart.

3 out of 5 stars Only an OK book.......2003-01-04

There is some useful information in the book. The book is divided into many different situations and types of people and this is useful. However many sections are very shallow and it seems that the sections that deal with the most difficult people tend to blame it on the recipient rather than the perpetrator. Also, there is a tendency to helplessness in the face of the worst offenders, i.e. there is nothing you can do. In reality this is seldom the case. But the desired actions may be dramatic and have far reaching consequences. It seems the book is written so as to offend none when some should be offended.

3 out of 5 stars Read "Winning with Difficult People" instead.......2002-04-18

Try reading "Winning with Difficult people" instead of this book. This book did tell me about certain types of people and how to deal with them, but it didn't go into deal about why they are the way they are to others.
