Book Description
From the bestselling author of Get With the Program! and Bob Greene's Total Body Makeover comes The Best Life Diet, a lifetime plan for losing weight and keeping it off. Bob Greene helped Oprah achieve her dramatic weight loss, and he can help you too. You'll eat the same delicious food that Oprah enjoys, and, just like Oprah, you'll have Bob to encourage you at every step. Unlike a celebrity, however, you don't need to hire a staff of experts to aid and advise you, because Bob's plan, easily tailored to an array of tastes, lifestyles, and activity levels, acts as your personal trainer and private nutritionist. Just open the book and let Bob help you get started down the path toward your best possible life.
What sets Bob apart from all the other experts who claim to have plans that work is that he admits that weight loss is difficult: seventeen years of watching people struggle to lose weight on a seemingly endless string of trendy crash diets, only to backslide and regain the pounds they've shed, have taught him that dropping pounds is not simply a numbers game. By acknowledging that it is not simple laziness but a complicated web of social rituals, cultural expectations, and habits that drives people to gain weight, Greene is able to attack the problem of weight loss realistically and offer not a short-lived, quick-fix formula, but a long-term program that accounts for the challenges and constraints of the real world.
Divided into three phases, The Best Life Diet gives you the tools you need to change your life. In each phase, you'll be asked to reexamine the decisions you make on a daily basis and gradually alter your habits to achieve lasting results. The book also includes easy-to-follow meal plans that make it simple to meet your daily energy and nutrient requirements, whether you are on the run and breakfast means a quick smoothie or you have time to shop for fresh produce and make something special.
You'll watch the weight disappear as you learn to prepare festive and flavorful dishes like Fire-Roasted Tomato-Shrimp Veracruz, Chicken Sausage Jambalaya, or Flank Steak with Chimichurri Topping and indulge in desserts like Roasted Peaches with Ricotta and Almonds or Apple Rhubarb Walnut Crisp. And for each delicious recipe, there is a detailed nutritional analysis, so you know exactly what you are eating and how it fits into your personal eating plan.
Most important, Bob's plan doesn't end once you've lost the weight. Instead, it gives you the tools you need to make living your best life second nature, because for Greene, a diet is not something you go "on" or "off" but a set of guidelines that will help you claim the life you deserve.
Customer Reviews:
Great info in this book.......2007-09-21
The info in this book was extremely helpful thus far. I recommend it to anyone looking for assistance in dieting even if it is not for you, it offers a fresh prospective you will learn about.
Finding the motivation to exercise is the hard part........2007-09-18
The Best Life Diet offers a lot of good common sense about healthy food choices to effectively manage the waist line. I like the fact that Bob stresses how important exercise is to long-term weight loss success. However, we're not all lucky enough to have a "Bob Green" as our personal coach to motivate us to exercise.
As a busy working mom, the best way I've found to prioritize exercise and to stay motivated is with a game called The Fitness Challenge Board Game. Although I usually hate to exercise, I've personally lost 60 pounds and kept it off for 4 years now and a huge factor of my success having The Fitness Challenge to keep me consistent.
Best Life, Best Yet.......2007-08-31
Of all the Bob Greene books, I think this one is the best. Not because it has some revolutionary diet or exercise plan, but simply because it focuses more on other factors that keep people from losing weight. As the book points out, dropping weight is not just a numbers game, its a complicated web of social rituals, cultural expectations and habits that drive people to gain weight.
The book's plan is a three phase one. The focus of phase one is to move more and change your meal patterns. Phase two is learning how to control your hunger and make dietary changes. Finally, phase three concentrates on improving the quality of one's diet.
The book ends with meal plans and recipes, which roughly make up about a third of the book. Also sandwiched in there is a short section on keeping a positive attitude, which I feel is as crucial as anything else when it comes to losing weight. After all, what good is a plan if you can't stick with it long enough to see results? (Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator for more on this topic).
All in all its probably Bob's best to date and I'm sure it will help many who struggle with their weight loss demons.
Real advice that makes sense........2007-08-29
I've read them all and now I know why this one was rated number one in Consumer Reports. It is a totally realistic approach to a lifetime of healthy good eating. Great recipes and a great section on discovering your emotional "triggers"for eating.
One of the best of its kind!.......2007-08-27
This is a great book - the best "diet" help book I've ever found. Bob Greene is not giving easy solutions, but he is making a lot of sense, common sense, in his approach. I truly believe that if I can make it a way of life, his advice will lead me to a healthier and leaner me...

Excellent.......2007-02-25
Really good advanced Econometrics Text. Anyone with a basic background in statistics, econometrics and matrix algebra will benefit greatly.
Not an easy book.......2006-12-19
Be warned. If you are buying this book for your first class in graduate-level econometrics, I suggest you also look around for another book or two to give you a different (easier) take on this material.
Encylopedic Treatment of Econometrics.......2005-08-21
If you have taken a course in econometrics, this is one of the best econometrics references that you can have on your bookshelf. There is ample discussion on linear regression models and all the required concepts from mathematical statistics that are needed. It just hits on time series and panel data, but clearly those are topics for two different books altogether. This book gets updated frequently and the format is reorganized to make things easier to understand. However, some times the reorganization does not work for the best.
Good book for graduate students.......2005-08-21
This is a good advanced book in econometrics. I would definitely not recommend it to undergrad students unless they are really comfortable with matrix algebra and statistics. It is not an introductory book, but, if the reader has already taken some econometrics courses and needs a more advanced text, this book is very useful, especially for graduate students. It is particularly good at explaining concepts in a way that slightly easier books do not. I use Greene's book as a reference and I have personally contacted William Greene to ask him some questions and he is very friendly and willing to help. I would only suggest using another book for understanding time series since Greene's coverage on that is not great.
not what was promised by the seller.......2005-07-05
The book was advertised with CD, i received no CD in it. When i contacted abebook, they send me e-mail that i have to complain to amazon.

Intermediate Algebra Book.......2007-02-17
I was very impressed with how fast the book arrived. It also arrived in great condition. I would definately consider doing business with this vendor again.
Book needs more explanations and less fluff.......2005-06-04
Book needs more explanations on problems and less "Study habit reminders" and other fluffy stuff that I just skip over. What student has time to read the "extra optional stuff"?
In my humble opinion, this book doesn't explain problems well.
It doesn't explain WHY. It assumes you know WHY problems are solved in certain ways.
For example, on page 110, she throws a property at you:
"If A is a positive number, then | X |
< a is equivalent to -a
< X
< a."
It would really help me understand this property if I knew WHY| X |
< a is equivalent to -a
< X
< a.
The answer book should explain more also - especially for problems that are different from the examples.
I do like the idea of concept checks though.
Sometimes complex.......2003-09-29
This book covers many problems but lacks descriptive solutions. I could not get a good concept of how to solve the problems because most of the solutions were broken into several sections. This book does give some of the answers but again it does lack descriptive solutions.
I can't wait to get this book!.......2003-09-17
In my pre-algebra I and II classes, we used Martin-Gay's books. They were wonderful! They're easy to understand and follow with plenty of exercises. I was looking forward to using her books for Intermediate Algebra. I was extremely disappointed to find that the college switched to a different book...one that isn't helpful at all. I'm planning on using Martin-Gay's book along side our college textbook we now have. Hopefully, the lightbulb will be going on much quicker!
Very Complete.......2003-03-07
This book won't let you get stuck, it explains all concepts clearly. It offers a good beginning algebra review, and gives you a thorough dose of the tougher stuff.

"Learning the game of power requires a certain way of looking at the world, a shifting of perspective," writes Robert Greene. Mastery of one's emotions and the arts of deception and indirection are, he goes on to assert, essential. The 48 laws outlined in this book "have a simple premise: certain actions always increase one's power ... while others decrease it and even ruin us."
The laws cull their principles from many great schemers--and scheming instructors--throughout history, from Sun-Tzu to Talleyrand, from Casanova to con man Yellow Kid Weil. They are straightforward in their amoral simplicity: "Get others to do the work for you, but always take the credit," or "Discover each man's thumbscrew." Each chapter provides examples of the consequences of observance or transgression of the law, along with "keys to power," potential "reversals" (where the converse of the law might also be useful), and a single paragraph cleverly laid out to suggest an image (such as the aforementioned thumbscrew); the margins are filled with illustrative quotations. Practitioners of one-upmanship have been given a new, comprehensive training manual, as up-to-date as it is timeless.
Book Description
Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this piercing work distills three thousand years of the history of power in to forty-eight well explicated laws. As attention--grabbing in its design as it is in its content, this bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other great thinkers. Some laws teach the need for prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master"), the virtue of stealth ("Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions"), and many demand the total absence of mercy ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally"), but like it or not, all have applications in real life. Illustrated through the tactics of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry Kissinger, P. T. Barnum, and other famous figures who have wielded--or been victimized by--power, these laws will fascinate any reader interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control.
Customer Reviews:
Portrays a realistic view of the world while rising up in power........2007-09-16
When I first acquired this book, I delved into the text and was fascinated by what is never taught in school, hardly at work, even with people; as this book states wisely, many people would like to keep to themselves and therefore many who have power hardly share it, unless a deal is behind it. The book itself may be a paradox in parts, and the methods used may be controversial; yet it has the essential basic "training" in order to strive to the top.
Sometimes one wonders if this will work, or does this author fool us into purchasing this book. It may show a pessimistic world of beguile, secrecy, envy and greed; however this portrays a realistic view of the world while rising up in power.
Brilliantly written, with worthy examples of great thinkers, philosophers and military officials of history; this concise edition will keep you on the ground reading, whilst teaching you how to propel in the air and on top of the world.
USMC- Commandant's reading list.......2007-07-25
In the interest of full disclosure, I'm Army - 16yrs. From 2000 thru 2006 I was stationed in Okinawa and the best place for all service members to buy books so deployed (Amazon aside) was from the bookstore on Camp Foster (across from the movie theatre). For at least a good 6 months (in 2002) this book was prominently featured on the shelves with a tag identifying it as having made the USMC Commandant's Reading List (or, a book senior commisioned Marine Corps leadership consider beneficial to Marines (enlisted and commisioned) seeking guidance on professional development). Intrigued, I bought it. I won't go into a lengthy review here: in a nutshell; the book lists a series of TTPs (tactics, techniques and procedures) designed to maximize one's advantage when negotiating interpersonal realationships both professional and personal. Some of these TTPs involve elements of manipulation, subterfuge, and dishonesty that clearly cross the boundaries of unethical behavior. It bothered me not just a little that Marines or Soldiers (young and old) might consider using the advice in this book as means of advancing their careers or solidifying leadership positions within their respective units.
I do know some of the book's reccomendations are in direct conflict with The Army Values, and according to at least two USMC Staff NCOs (both good friends) this is also the case regarding their own code of professional conduct. One of the Marines in question wrote a letter (to whom -I don't know) expressing his concern. A few months later the book assumed a less prominent residence on the shelves. Nonetheless; I never failed to see it lodged in the odd bookshelf in someone's (usually an officer) professional space - from time to time. I consider its presence an indicator for stepping up one's vigilance when dealing with the books's owner.
Fabulous!.......2007-07-20
I bought this book for a good friend of mine, and he said it's excellent reading. I also bought him Blood On The Altar, which he took a peek at, and he said he looks forward to reading that as well.
Really Good Read.......2007-07-18
I thought the book was absolutely relevant to today even though the examples in most of the 48 laws were from historical occurances throughout history. Robert Greene blends many different learning methods, including fables, poetry, as well as regular prose to convey general life lessons that many of us learn the hard way. Some laws of power may be deemed unethical, while other simple, but the point is each and every one is true and relevant to accumulating power. By using this book you can protect yourself from extremely ambitious people, while executing your own ambitions as well. Great read to understanding the human psyche and its quest to be ambitious.
Robert Green writes another great book.......2007-07-16
In the 48 Laws of Power Robert Green examines the nature and use of power through the examination of classic figures in history. Every person has a relationship with power and the author has done an excellent job of defining the and categorizing the different aspects of power and perceptions thereof. Not all of the aspects of power or "Laws" are for everyone yet their existance and nature shoud be known by all. An excellent book a 'must' read.

Book Description
Robert Greene's groundbreaking guides, The 48 Laws of Power and The Art of Seduction, espouse profound, timeless lessons from the events of history to help readers vanquish an enemy or ensnare an unsuspecting victim. Now, with The 33 Strategies of War, Greene has crafted an important new addition to this ruthless and unique series.
Spanning world civilizations, synthesizing dozens of political, philosophical, and religious texts and thousands of years of violent conflict, The 33 Strategies of War is a comprehensive guide to the subtle social game of everyday life informed by the most ingenious and effective military principles in war. Structured in Greene's trademark style, The 33 Strategies of War is the I-Ching of conflict, the contemporary companion to Sun Tzu's The Art of War. Abundantly illustrated with examples from history, including the folly and genius of everyone from Napoleon to Margaret Thatcher, Shaka the Zulu to Lord Nelson, Hannibal to Ulysses S. Grant, as well as movie moguls, Samurai swordsmen, and diplomats, each of the thirty-three chapters outlines a strategy that will help you win life's wars. Learn the offensive strategies that require you to maintain the initiative and negotiate from a position of strength, or the defensive strategies designed to help you respond to dangerous situations and avoid unwinnable wars. The great warriors of battlefields and drawing rooms alike demonstrate prudence, agility, balance, and calm, and a keen understanding that the rational, resourceful, and intuitive always defeat the panicked, the uncreative, and the stupid. An indispensable book, The 33 Strategies of War provides all the psychological ammunition you need to overcome patterns of failure and forever gain the upper hand.
Customer Reviews:
It's a great read, but put it in context........2007-09-21
Being a lover of history I think this is a great read. I enjoyed Greene's 48 Laws of power mainly because of all the historical examples he used. This one was no different in that regard.
However, I would caution anyone who considers this some kind of manual for competition and conflict. When reading some of the illustrations I often got the feeling the people involved were more lucky than calculated.
Also, there are so many things that can not be controlled by one person. It would be foolish to think a person could refer to this book and get detailed direction on what to do in a situation. First off, the person would have to correctly diagnose their situation and know which `law' to apply. Knowing which 'law' to apply in a given situation is not automatic.
For me, it is a great read that provides some mental stimulation. If you love history like I do then check this out. If you are looking for some kind of blueprint to wage 'war' on others you probably have already lost and do not know it.
Another tour through history.......2007-09-17
I loved 48 laws of power ( after I got past the shock of reading a truly amoral book. 33 Strategies isn't quite as good. I have been trying to think about why and my guess is that Robert Green is just not a top military strategist and when he keeps saying you must this and you must that, my intuition is just sharp enough to have a bit of doubt.
The short history clips are great, I enjoyed them just as much as I did in 48 laws. By the time I got to chapter 18 ( about 2/3 of the way through the book), they were really all I was reading.
Completes the series nicely.......2007-08-13
When purchased with "The 48 Laws of Power" and "The Art of Seduction", this book completes the series so nicely that one could go from a passive personality to a dominate one (or at least someone who can easily read people) in very little time.
The emphasis of this book is on mind games and what to expect from people whenever you feel vexed by their actions. It also shows how to test people to better understand their true nature and from there how to guide them into whatever direction you wish for them to go. There is even a chapter on friendship and how it applies to the workplace; for example, even the most verbally supportive friend can harbor jealousy that will show itself in very hard to notice ways. Recognizing this early on will keep you safer from being let down when you happen to find yourself needing someone. It shows how it is better to depend on someone you are not friends with rather than turning to the people you trust... (it was odd at first, but not that I have the hang of it, I have increased my productivity ten-fold at work and even received a promotion that I was not being considered for til after I read this book)...
Like the other two books, this one will have parts that are simply too evil for most people to pull off let alone attempt. I reserve these tactics for vengence or keep them in mind for when I encounter someone who does not have my reservations when dealing with others and has the type of personality to deliver these tactics without conscience (I can either avoid them completely no matter how close we have to work together or turn their own game around on them)..
When considering office politics, government politics, or just life in general, this book (along with the other 2) is what you need to get you ahead.
Tactful.......2007-07-18
This book is very descriptive in it's insightful grasp of conduct and how to stategize in winning and getting ahead. This book is Awesome!
The best book ever.......2007-07-08
This book teaches you how to handle anything in life. Its a book you should read go back and consult very often.

Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows if they've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorly understood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Years after toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a few unlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "did wrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms and labels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveries about the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development is alternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatric psychologist who also teaches at Harvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cut through the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parents of explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has the advantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, and sympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who are not chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through the entire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and children is interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understanding the origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies for avoidance. Although pharmacological treatment is not the book's focus, there is a chapter on drug therapies. --Richard Farr
Book Description
A groundbreaking approach to understanding and parenting children who frequently exhibit severe fits of temper and other intractable behaviours, from a distinguished clinician and pioneer in this field, now updated to include the most recent research.
Almost everyone knows an explosive child, one whose frequent, severe fits of temper leave his or her parents standing helpless in their fear, frustration, and guilt. Most of these parents have tried everything –– reasoning, behaviour modification, therapy, medication –– but to no avail. They wonder if their child is deviant or just plain bad.
Dr. Ross Greene has worked with thousands of explosive children, and he has good news: these kids aren't bad, and neither are their parents. Rather, explosive children suffer from a physiological deficiency in frustration tolerance and flexibility. Throughout this compassionate book, Dr. Greene demonstrates why traditional treatments don't work for these kids and offers a new conceptual framework for understanding their behaviour, along with new language to describe it. He explains the latest neuroscience findings about the importance of flexibility, and, most important, he shows parents specific, practical ways they can recognize the signs of an impending explosion, defuse tension, and reduce frustration levels for the entire family.
o For parents, psychologists, educators and ADHD groups.
o In addition to the scientific foundation of the book, Greene addresses parents in practical ways that will help show results in difficult children and their effect on families.

A great guide for parents struggling with an explosive child!.......2007-08-14
I was pleasantly surprised by the straightforward approach to this book. Instead of a psychobabble, Dr. Greene explains potential reasons your child may be struggling to control his/her outbursts in language a layperson can understand. More importantly, we found very practical, effective help for dealing with these frustrating explosions that have become very disruptive to our family. I feel hopeful after reading this book that we can finally help our child deal with the frustrations of life in a healthy, appropriate manner. If you are looking for solutions without thousands of dollars in therapy and medication that may not be warranted for your child (although sometimes it certainly is), I would highly recommend this book.
Review on the book Explosive Child.......2007-08-13
I think it is a very didatic book for both parents with this type of problems in their families or for professionals.
not a cure all, but the most helpful approach yet .......2007-07-26
Last year my 16 year old stepdaughter moved in with us. She has ADHD and ODD. I had never even HEARD of ODD at that time. I could not believe that a 16 year old could throw TANTRUMS but she has my 4 year old nephew beat. She could melt down over the smallest things! This book confirmed what I knew in my heart - that she doesn't WANT to be a bad kid and she DOES want our LOVE. Learning to negotiate with her in a positive way has been incredibly helpful and there have been much fewer meltdowns since my husband and I read this book.
Can relate to so much.......2007-07-17
I was amazed when I began reading the book The Explosive Child. I am about half-way through the book so far and I have learned much already on proactive ways to approach different situations involving my difficult 4 year old son. This is extremely important. Although he has not had an official diagnosis at this time, I can relate to much of what these other families encountered while raising their chilren. I highly recommend this book to any parent who is trying to raise a child who has difficulties with change (especially), constructive criticism, and many other roadblocks in the life of a parent/child relationship. I am looking forward to continuing to study this book.
An Introduction to Alternatives.......2007-06-04
You can get the gist of this book by skimming through it. It speaks to cooperative communication and problem solving with the child instead of the authoritarian approach that is so easy to fall into (do it because I say so.) The approach would be beneficial for any child. There are quite a few examples written in dialogue style to demonstrate the technique and the author talks about common mistakes made when first trying to use this method. The three main points are - show empathy, describe the problem, invite the child into finding a solution.

Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care.......2007-08-10
I am working in an Orthopaedic office as a Nurse Practitioner and find this book to be an invaluable reference, particularly for assessing specific areas I am less familiar with.
Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care.......2007-04-15
If you're going to be in practice, you had better own this book. Every general practice physician I know owns this book, and every mid-level provider ought to have one, as well. Concise, easy to read/understand, discusses complaints by body region, includes IDC-9 codes.
The Ortho Bible.......2007-02-23
well rounded and balanced for both the orthopaedic and the primary care office.
The end-all orthopedic reference for primary care.......2006-11-10
There is no need for another orthopedic reference on my bookshelf.
Essentials (3rd ed.) is highly visual, easy to search, and quick to browse. Arranged by anatomic regions, the book reviews pertinent anatomy, then discusses the examination. Each section is suborganized by disease state, and clearly illustrates the maneuvers used to diagnose each problem. Finally, treatments and procedures are described with illustrations, photographs. Each includes relevent ICD and CPT codes. There are complete libraries of patient handouts (which are also included on the accompanying DVD in adobe acrobat format).
As a family physician, I see a tremendous amount of orthopedic issues in my office, and Essentials has been a great resource for both me and my patients.
need more detail.......2006-07-11
I bought this book thinking it would be a more specicfic musculoskeletal companion to Braddom's generalized PM&R textbook. Unfortunately the treatment paragraphs (most important section from my perspective) for each topic were very thin and nonspecific. They were woefully inadequate for an attending or physiatry resident. I sent the book back which unfortunately meant I didn't get to critique the DVD.

Book Description
The season's most talked-about all-purpose personal strategy guide and philosophical compendium," said Newsweek of Robert Greene's bold, elegant, and ingenious manual of modern manipulation, The 48 Laws of Power. Now Greene has once again mined history and literature to distill the essence of seduction, the most highly refined mode of influence, the ultimate power trip.
The Art of Seduction is a masterful synthesis of the work of thinkers such as Freud, Ovid, Kierkegaard, and Einstein, as well as the achievements of the greatest seducers throughout history. From Cleopatra to John F. Kennedy, from Andy Warhol to Josephine Bonaparte, The Art of Seduction gets to the heart of the character of the seducer and his or her tactics, triumphs and failures. The seducer's many faces include: the Siren, the Rake, the Ideal Lover, the Dandy, the Natural, the Coquette, the Charmer, and the Charismatic. Twenty-four maneuvers will guide readers through the seduction process, providing cunning, amoral instructions for and analysis of this fascinating, all-pervasive form of power. Just as beautifully packaged and every bit as essential as The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction is an indispensable primer of persuasion and offers the best lessons on how to take what you want from whomever you want or how to prevent yourself from being taken.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read.......2007-09-23
This is a must read book if you want to understand seduction, control, influence etc. This is by far the best written book on the subject. But, its 800 pages long, so prepare to read a long story that demonstrates the seduction technique and then explains the hows and whys.
Very interesting..........2007-09-18
Good one. It provide you with a lot of good facts, so you can make good opinions about what's going on.
But for dating "starters" I recommend any easier book. That one can make you bored very soon.
Good book but not for marketers or married people.......2007-09-14
PROS: This book is written in the same style just like all the others, lots of historical examples. I purchased the audio book and the reading voice is excellent, one of the best voices I have heard for an audio book. I am a huge fan of Robert Greene and like all the other books,(48 laws of power, 33 strategies of war).
CONS: Not for marketers or married people. I thought this book was about how to seduce prospects into buying your product - I was wrong. This book is really for single people and has various historical lessons on how to seduce the opposite/same sex. There is a part in the book about children which I found weird and quite frankly a little disturbing. As a professional marketer and married man, I only found small parts of this book useful. This book is my least favorite of the three by Robert Greene. I hope this review helps.
Caine
It's kinda evil..and mostly full of stories.......2007-09-13
The book discusses ways on how to manipulate and emotionally torture a victim into believing they need you or want you. It's kinda evil. On top of that, there are stories of other people, that takes up 80% of the book. If I want to read about Casanova, I will take out a book about him.
Moralizers need not apply, but even the more unscrupulous of you should be warned.......2007-09-03
We've got plenty of people complaining about how amoral this book is and plenty of others who tell you about how great this book is so I don't think I really need to say anything about that here.
What DOES need to be said is that, even if you are the type of person who's perceptions are NOT dominated by moral values - meaning that you are more likely to apply the principals in this book - there are a few things you should know.
First of all I need to make one thing perfectly clear, this is NOT a "how to get laid" guide (though you can certainly use the principals in this book for that purpose, might be a bit of overkill though), if you're looking for a simple "how to get laid" guide, you're better off looking to works from Mystery, Ross Jeffries, or whoever else is into that sort of thing.
Now to tell you what this book is. It is a book on how to dominate, manipulate, and control someone to the point of making that person your slave.
Needless to say, applying these principles for the sole purpose of getting laid is somewhat akin to using an H-bomb to hunt down a squirrel. You can do it if you really want to, but proceed with caution.
The book also warns you against pursuing victims that seem overly self-sufficient, and that insecure or unfulfilled targets make much better victims. Be careful with this you guys! The practices outlined in this book are VERY powerful. If you go overboard with applying them to people who are TOO insecure or TOO unfulfilled, in other words people who are not emotionally stable, you could very well end up driving people into a deep depression or even suicide. That's how powerful this stuff is.
On a more positive note, there is one thing about this book that even those who are inhibited by higher moral standards can walk away with - a greater understanding of human nature (which, in my opinion, is the single most important subject there is). Fair warning, a number of things that society has conditioned us to believe about mankind and human nature, this book will turn them into ashes and does not leave much room for any sort of logical rebuttal. You won't recieve any sugar-coated nonsense here, principles that are warped with whatever agenda that those behind the curtain wish to impose upon you. No sir, none of that, just cold hard facts that may very well turn your concept of reality inside out.
Bottom line, this book is very potent and it provides you with a perspective that will change your model of reality. However, if it is used carelessly, it can destroy your life and cause you to destroy the lives of others. The teachings in this book are highly potent and if they are to be carried out at all, it must be done with maturity and responsibility.

Media Reviews
- "I have been doing project management for over 30 years and am considered a subject matter expert in the PMBOK(r) Guide -Third Edition primarily because I am the Project Manager who led the team that developed this edition. As a consultant I was hired to review and evaluate eight of the top selling PMP Exam Preparation books for their accuracy in following the PMBOK® Guide - Third Edition. I have developed and taught a PMP Exam Prep course for a leading R.E.P., and taught PMP Exam preparation classes for PMI Chapters. I can honestly say that Head First PMP is by far the best PMP Exam Preparation book of all I have reviewed in depth. It is the very best basic education and training book that I have read that presents the processes for managing a project, which makes it a great resource for a basic project management class for beginners as well as a tool for practitioners who want to pass the PMP exam. The graphical story format is unique, as project management books go, which makes it both fun and easy to read while driving home the basics that are necessary for preparing someone is just getting started and those who want to take the exam."
--Dennis Bolles, PMP DLB Associates, LLC and co-author of The Power of Enterprise-Wide Project Management
- "This looks like too much fun to be a PMP study guide! Behind the quirky humor and nutty graphics lies an excellent explanation of the project management processes. Not only will this book make it easier to pass the exam, you'll learn a lot of good stuff to use on the job too."
--Carol Steuer, PMP and PMBOK(r) Guide, 3rd Edition Leadership Team
- "This is the best thing to happen to PMP since, well, ever. You'll laugh, learn, pass the exam, and become a better project manager all at the same time."
-- Scott Berkun, author of The Art of Project Management and The Myths of Innovation
- "Original, fresh, and fun... this is truly the perfect study companion for anyone aiming for PMP certification."
--Teresa Simmermacher, PMP and Project Manager at Avanade
- "I love this format! Head First PMP covers everything you need to know to pass your PMP exam. The sound-bite format combined with the whimsical images turns a dry subject into entertainment. The organization starts with the basics then drills into the details. The in-depth coverage of complex topics like Earned Value and Quality Control are presented in an easy to understand format with descriptions, pictures, and examples. This book will not only help you pass the PMP, it should be used as an daily reference for practicing project managers. I sure wish I had this when I was studying for the exam."
--Mike Jenkins, PMP, MBA
- "I think that under the fonts and formalized goofiness, the book has a good heart (intending to cover basic principles in an honest way rather than just to pass the test). Head First PMP attempts to educate potential project managers instead of being a mere "how to pass the PMP exam" book filled with test taking tips. This is truly something which sets it apart from the other PMP certification exam books."
--Jack Dahlgren, Project Management Consultant
- "Head First PMP is a great tool to help make sense of the Project Management Body of Knowledge for the everyday Project Manager."
--Mark Poinelli, PMP
About the Book
A PMP certification is more than just passing a test. It means that you have the knowledge to solve most common project problems, and proves that you know your stuff. Once you're certified, your projects are more likely to succeed because you have the skills and knowledge to make them successful. Not only that, it can mean a better job, more money, and greater respect from your peers.
But studying for a difficult four-hour exam on project management isn't easy, even for experienced project managers. You want to remember everything that you're learning about project management, but your brain is working against you! Your brain craves novelty, and most PMP certification prep books are anything but novel. When you keep putting down a boring book instead of studying, it's because your brain doesn't think the information in it is worth learning. Your brain has more important stuff to think about, like how to keep you alive and out of danger-and it doesn't think that failing the PMP exam qualifies as life-threatening!
So how do you trick your brain into thinking that your life does depend on learning everything you need to know to pass the PMP Exam? Head First PMP is the answer! Using the latest research in neurobiology, cognitive science and learning theory, Head First PMP has a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works-a multi-sensory experience that helps the material stick, not a text-heavy approach that puts you to sleep.
Head First PMP offers 100% coverage of The PMBOK® Guide principles and certification objectives in a way that's engaging, not tedious. This book helps you prepare for the PMP certification exam with a unique method that goes beyond answers to specific questions and makes you think about the big picture of project management. By putting project management concepts into context, you will be able to understand, remember, and apply them-not just on the exam, but also on the job.
With Head First PMP, you get the best of both worlds: a thorough and effective preparation guide for the PMP certification exam with hundreds of practice questions and exam strategies, along with puzzles, games, problems, exercises and the unique Head First approach that makes learning easy and entertaining. When you're done with Head First PMP, you'll know your stuff, you'll pass the exam, and you'll be able to bring everything you've learned to your job.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book with great content!.......2007-09-12
Hi, I passed the PMP exam on Sep 6'07 and used HF PMP as part of my preparations. I must confess anything that PMBOK covers is being covered by this book. But what is more interesting is the ease with which all concepts are explained and can be understood. This book goes in depth to make you understand the finer points in PMBOK and that is one big reason to buy it. Not forgetting the presentation of this book which makes it so much enjoyable to read and pass the exam.
There are questions at the end of each chapter which are in line with the real exam and tests your understanding of concepts.
All in all a great book for preparation and a must have for anyone appearing for the exam. Cheers!
Neeraj , PMP
A must for PMP Certification preparation and beyond.......2007-08-30
"Head First PMP" is an absolute must for anyone who would like to prepare for PMP certification. It is well written, covering all the topics required for PMP. There are a lot of books available for preparation of the certification, but Head First PMP stands out from all of them. It is easy to read, understand, and believe me, it would help you make a great deal of progress in your understanding and study of the material. Even after certification, Head First PMP will serve you as a quick and easy reference for your project management questions. I would definitely recommend this to all.
Head First PMP Defines a New Oxymoron: Engaging Textbook.......2007-08-22
In preparation for the test, I recently spent some extended time in the bookstore comparing options to help my studies. The local bookseller I visited unfortunately didn't have the Head First book that I had heard so much about, so I ended up with a another title that was also highly recommended on Amazon. After bringing the other book home, I read two chapters and realized I was thinking about everything other than what I was reading. I decided I needed a different route if I planned to stay awake during my preparations for the exam and decided to try to source a copy of the Head First guide instead.
I found a copy of the Head First PMP title at another bookshop and settled in for what I thought was going to be another futile attempt at cramming this information into the old gray matter. However, much to my surprise, I found myself *engaged* in the content, and moreover, I was truly *learning* it! The book's approach ensures understanding of the content through thought and exercises - not reading lots of text and hoping some of it sticks long enough to pass the test.
If you haven't seen what makes the book different, definitely take a moment to visit the book's website (http://www.headfirstlabs.com/pmp) to see if this writing style is a fit for you. As another reviewer mentioned, this book definitely has a quirky feel to it (e.g. a fireside chat between the scope management plan and the project scope statement as one example) that may not be right for everyone, but for the rest of us, Fireside chats, crossword puzzles and Cows Gone Wild is half of what makes the book so engaging.
Don't let the fun use of graphics and informal style of the book fool you into doubting its usefulness or accuracy. While I can't guarantee that you'll pass the exam by reading this book, I will say that when you use the book as outlined in the book's introduction, the Head First PMP should absolutely increase your knowledge of the things PMI deems important for the exam without torturing yourself in the process.
Finally, for those that may be wondering why you should take my word on the use of this book, I passed the exam by a good margin yesterday. I found that on at least 25-30 questions, I would not have gotten the question correct had it not been for something I read in the Head First PMP book over the two days prior to the test.
Highly recommended!
Good Start-up book for preparing PMP exam.......2007-07-27
"Head First PMP" is a very good book for project managers who are preparing for PMP exam. I always admired the "Head First" way of providing the technical and managerial books. My sincere thanks for O'Reily Publications and the authors of Head First PMP. To present the subject into a pictorial way need lots of creative and art type of thinking. Expecially, I like Risk Mangement chapter in this book. Overall the contents and depth of subjects are good enough to understand all the knowledge areas and process groups to pass PMP exam. Its great book and everyone in the proect management field, can have this book.
Save Money While Learning More (what else do you need).......2007-07-05
If what you want is a clear, concise, well-written and practical guide to project management, this is the book for you. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I bought this book less than two weeks before my exam (after shooting a few hundred away for some "Tricks of the Trade") and passed my exam with plenty of room to spare.
One of the best things about this book is it treats you like an equal, someone who has stopped by their cube to ask some questions of a colleague. I used to one of those who sneered at the Head First approach, thinking that any book that wasn't written as densely as possible wasn't serious. I have since grown up and realized that all that matters is that I learn the material.
Since having a PMP credential is becoming a commodity item necessary for getting through screening gates, it makes sense to minimize the expense for passing the test while maximizing the material learned. There isn't a doubt in my mind that Head First PMP is the way to go.
Let's face it, since this is a business credential, there are lots of businesses trying to sell you the sure-fire method of passing the exam. Well, there isn't one and you can dump a lot of money down the drain trying to find one. So do yourself a favor, buy this book even if you aren't taking the exam. You will learn how to run your projects efficiently. What more could you want for less than 50 bucks?

Book Description
The first comprehensive presentation for clinicians of the groundbreaking approach popularized in Ross Greene's acclaimed parenting guide, The Explosive Child, this book provides a detailed framework for effective, individualized intervention with highly oppositional children and their families. Many vivid examples and Q&A sections show how to identify the specific cognitive factors that contribute to explosive and noncompliant behavior, remediate these factors, and teach children and their adult caregivers how to solve problems collaboratively. The book also describes challenges that may arise in implementing the model and provides clear and practical solutions. Two special chapters focus on intervention in schools and in therapeutic/restrictive facilities.
Customer Reviews:
Treating Explosive Kids.......2007-09-14
This book provides both an excellent treatise on easily-frustrated/highly explosive children from both a clinical and practical point of view. I especially appreciate the approach to helping these children from the viewpoint of their specific struggle instead of their "diagnosis" as ADHD, Bi-polar, Oppositional Defiant, etc. While those labels might be helpful in the short term, it does little to speak to actually helping them with their day to day difficulties. There is a sad dearth in helpful treatment for not only children, but adults with these needs. While new medications can and should be included in treatment, it is the relational context that either perpetuates the problem or in which healing is experienced. This book is highly recommended.
Perfect application for professionals!.......2007-03-16
I've read "The Explosive Child" for parents, providers, etc. I enjoyed it; however, this book provided the perspective of a provider in such a concise way that I was able to immediately begin applying it as I read. It is a great way to reaffirm the professional's role.
Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach.......2007-01-11
Easy to read and understand, practical tips and excellent ideas for working with kids, a must read for those who work with children of all ages.
Provides solutions.......2006-11-05
I purchased 'Treating Explosive Kids' out of frustration of trying to figure out how to work with one of our grandchildren (age 7) who seems unable to control his temper and outbursts. While other family members said it was just 'bad behavior' I felt there was something much deeper to this behavior. I think Dr. Greene has finally provided not only an answer, but some very do-able solutions. I realize this particular book was probably aimed more at professionals, I found it exceptionally helpful. The sample dialogs between doctor and parents, doctor and children provided real-life scenarios that could be used as examples in using the Collaborative Problem Solving Approach. This book, as well as well as the corresponding video I purchased, have finally given hope that explosive children can be helped as long as the adults/caregivers are willing to work at it.
Real Help for Parents and Therapists.......2006-08-27
Very helpful for therapists and parents who want to use the Collaborative Problem Approach with explosive kids. Using plenty of examples and scripts, Drs. Green and Ablon help to walk people through the approach, through common pitfalls, and provide guidance and support for therapists working with families. A must-read for every family therapist and teacher who has ever worked with an explosive child.
