Customer Reviews:
Second Edition.......2007-04-11
This is the "Bible" for NPD professionals. An excellent addition to the guides by Cooper and Crawford.
PDMA - Handbook for new product development.......2007-01-12
Haven't read from cover to cover, but proving to be an excellent reference. Good examples from industry reinforce key messages. Haven't learnt anything groundbreakingly new, but it has been a good confirmation or fine-tuning reference when needed.
Product Marketing Professionals - BUY THIS BOOK!.......2002-03-14
The PDMA Handbook is one of those rare and valuable books that characterizes a "body of knowledge" for a professional discipline. It was produced by the preeminent industry organization for New Product Development (NPD) professionals, the PDMA .... This text describes current, best practices in NPD and includes contributions from knowledge leaders in academia, consulting, and industry practice. If you are a CEO, COO, CTO, Marketing Manager, Product Manager, Product Planner, Engineering Manager, Project Manager, Program Manager, or any other professional involved in new product development (especially for technically complex products like hardware and software) you really need this book.
Product Managers (should) perform the nitty, gritty, roll-your-sleeves-up: opportunity analysis, business case formulation, and requirements management for new products. Research shows that judicious performance of this critical pre-work is a key determinant in the ultimate market success of new products and is usually performed inadequately. Unfortunately, most professionals in such roles have had no formal training beyond an MBA (sometimes). The PDMA Handbook provides a comprehensive treatment of virtually all the subject areas new product development (business) managers need to understand to drive the success of their endeavors. Want to know the key success factors for new products, understand value proposition, differentiation, features vs. benefits, uniqueness, sustainable competitive advantage, the fuzzy front end, pipeline management, how to plan a new product launch, manage a product portfolio, and more? This is the book you need. The PDMA Handbook is the Gray's Anatomy of product management. Buy it and READ it at least twice.
This book should have been read when it was published!.......2001-08-19
This book seem to be written by persons who really know what NPD (or NPI) really is. All those described mistakes possible to be done is made by me during last five years...this is a good book.
The area of NPD is large. Luckily people in PDMA have come to the right conclution: it is not possible for one person to handle the whole area throughly. Every chapter in this book is written by expert on his/her own area. Unfortunately the maximum size of one book restricts the possible space per one writer to include only the most vital parts into this book.
To whom I can recommend this book? --- To anyone who will to increase his/her own scope of NPD and especially to a person who already have gained some experience on this field and is able to compare his/her own experiece to this book.
Wonderful!.......2000-02-02
I purchased the PDMA Handbook on the strength of a review and have been very glad I did so. After quoting a few passage to my staff they began to borrow it, and now the Handbook has made the rounds of the office. It is worn and dog-eared, and quoted from on a daily basis.
The message of "treating each other with respect and dignity" by author Holahan et al has really struck a chord around here. Many of us believe she must be staunch Christian, one who lives her faith on a daily basis.
The PDMA Handbook has provided guidance in mapping out strategies for new services we hope to bring to market as well as the way our organization is managed. It has changed the way we do business and the way we percieve the world.

Book Description
Many organizations are now realizing that their competitive edge lies mostly in the brainpower-the intellectual capital-of their employees and management. To stay ahead of the pack, companies must leverage their knowledge, internally and externally. But it is not enough to develop lessons-learned databases. Experts now believe the current savior of organizations is knowledge management-the conceptualization, review, consolidation, and action phases of creating, securing, combining, coordinating, and retrieving knowledge-in short, the process of creating value from an organization's intangible assets. Jay Liebowitz, one of the leading knowledge management and expert systems authorities in the world, brings together over thirty articles contributed by the top researchers and practitioners to produce what seems destined to become the key reference for this emerging field. With it you will find: · How to create a knowledge-sharing environment · How senior executives can show tangible benefits using methods that value the intellectual capital-especially the "human capital" within the organization · How knowledge management is not the same as information management · How senior management commitment and involvement are essential to the success of a knowledge management system
Customer Reviews:
Worthy of a review, let alone a read........2004-08-27
First of all this a REAL book on knowledge management. This is not a touchy feely book about how employees are afraid of KM because they will lose their jobs although there is a section that contains common org problems. This is however a book for individuals who practice KM or implement KM programs. Basically, without the context of having been through a KM project this book will be useless to most people. This is not the place to start. Try Idiots Guide to KM, which btw is an excellent place to start - I recommend it to my customers all the time, Working Knowledge, or the KM Toolkit all of which will serve as far better primers on the subject. Having led 40 KM projects in the last 3 years I can say this book has been a treasured resource since getting it a few months ago.
Knowledge Management - Here, Now and Here's How.......2000-03-28
This book is truly a great resource regarding Knowledge Management. It is a compendium of information concerning knowledge and the management thereof. This Handbook is divided into five sections of high level information: Strategy, People and Measures, Elements, Knowledge Technologies, and Applications. Within each section real world experts provide sound foundations of the methodologies, techniques, and practices in this field. Many concepts discussed throughout this handbook are presented in an bulletized manner for easy assimilation. I found the numerous figures and diagrams in this text-like book complex but full of valuable information as to the relationship of Knowledge Management definitions, concepts and issues.
Knowledge Management is about the "brainware' or "human capital" that exists in a corporation. Today a corporation must invest in their human capital through certification programs, training and education courses, forums and knowledge sharing sessions to maintain and keep their competitive edge. Some believe that 70 to 80% of what's learned is through informal means versus formal methods like reading books, brochures and documents. None the less, all knowledge must be captured and managed effectively and efficiently.
Outstanding review of KM and all of its related components........1999-09-19
I am currently using this book as a reference for completion of my dissertation in the area of knowledge management. The book takes a no nonsense and factual look at this new and exciting area. Organizations who do not understand these concepts will soon loose their competitive edge. This book will provide all of the necessary insight to begin a knowledge management program within your organization.

Customer Reviews:
Another attempt for racionality behind human behavior.......2000-12-11
I must confess I do not have psychological background. From my humble point of view, all books like this, look at "the good and rational background" of people. They have the premise that all the staff is doing their best but "strange forces" makes them not to get the optimum for the organization. So, the goal is overcoming those refraining forces. I do believe that behavior of people is headed for their own rational interest which is not always the best for the company. In adition, we are looking for rationality in behavior which is only part of the truth. Is not envy, jealousy, narrow-minded, stuborness and so on, part of human being behavior?. without them, we only have part of the great picture and so, remedies will not work properly. Apart from that, the book is well organized and explains clearly the models the author is working with and the methodology used. Premises are strong and goals interested which lead to good results (provided human being were not as they are).
The one book to read on ending office politices.......1997-07-01
Argyris cuts to the heart of why organizations go wrong with a combination of passion and precision. Several authors who have written about effective teams and organizations such as Peter Senge and Gerald (Jerry) Weinberg regard Argyris's work quite highly, and rightly so. While other authors talk about and round the problems and issues, Argyris creates models which show not just what people do, but how they think. Other books in the field of Organizational Design that I have looked at appear dry as dust next to Argris.
Readers should be cautioned, however, that Argyris is a academic and researcher -- reading his books requires work, but work well worth the effort.

Book Description
Great management is difficult to see as it occurs. It's possible to see the results of great management, but it's not easy to see how managers achieve those results. Great management happens in one-on-one meetings and with other managers---all in private. It's hard to learn management by example when you can't see it.
You can learn to be a better manager---even a great manager---with this guide. You'll follow along as Sam, a manager just brought on board, learns the ropes and deals with his new team over the course of his first eight weeks on the job. From scheduling and managing resources to helping team members grow and prosper, you'll be there as Sam makes it happen. You'll find powerful tips covering:
- Delegating effectively
- Using feedback and goal-setting
- Developing influence
- Handling one-on-one meetings
- Coaching and mentoring
- Deciding what work to do---and what not to do
- ...and more.
Full of tips and practical advice on the most important aspects of management, this is one of those books that can make a lasting and immediate impact on your career.
Customer Reviews:
Practical Indeed!.......2007-07-09
I am very skeptical of most business improvement books and one size fits all methodologies, but I can tell you that this book absolutely shines as a glint of hope in the sea of business improvement noise. As opposed to trying to force a given technique that will apply to everyone in every business, this book provides some very "real" examples that exist in the software development world and some very simple concepts and techniques that can be used. This book is not written like an academic book of problems and solutions, but more of a story based book on a "real world" scenario, which truly solidifies the pragmatic name of the publisher. This pragmatic approach makes the book very easy to read, understand, and ultimately use. I think if you use at least one or two of the techniques presented in this book such as One-on-Ones and Big Visual Charts (BVCs) that the book will have more than paid for itself in terms of the time you will have spent reading it and of course the money!
Excellent Guide for New and Seasoned Managers of Knowledge Workers.......2007-06-04
This is an excellent work that guided me though my first formal management experience. The book weaves its lessons into a story which helped you to understand how to apply what you learned. Like many important books, it explains some simple rules that can be difficult to execute in practice. The downside of reading this book is that you may realized that you're not being managed well (or have not been in the past) and you can no longer live in blissful ignorance. All technical managers at all levels should have read a copy of this book. The section on having one on ones by itself is worth the price.
Basic solid info covered in fluff.......2007-03-28
Having gone through a recent re-org that calls itself "new" 6 months after the fact, a 2-hour reading of this book was able to bullet point a good many ways the new management chain is screwing up. Nothing in this book is actually "secret" (it's all pragmatic) and very little happens "behind closed doors" (by the time you're there, something's gone wrong), but it's a good primer to read for a new manager or a good primer to pummel a pointy-haired boss with when they're doing nothing right. The fictionalized case study running through the book didn't appeal to me, but the drawn out points and sidebars were well (that is "concisely") written.
Not sure why this book has good reviews.......2007-01-21
First, let me say that I have read many books off the Pragmatic Bookshelf. Many of the best books I read during 2006 were published by these guys. With that said, this is by far the worst book I have read in recent memory. It is very simplistic and not very engaging at all. It's like a Fischer Price introduction to management. I did read most of it, but only because I was trapped on an airplane to Norway. Incidently, I left the book on the plane. It wasn't worth the shelf space in my library.
Good book.......2007-01-14
I am a new manager and this book made me see how many things I'm not doing or what my manager is not doing either. This has caused me to wake up and begin trying to push for some changes in building teams instead of the groups that we are now.

Book Description
The vision of the MIT Process Handbook Project is the creation of a systematic and powerful method of organizing and sharing business knowledge. Organizing Business Knowledge: The MIT Process Handbook presents the key findings of a multidisciplinary research group at MIT’s Sloan School of Management that has worked for over a decade to lay the foundation for just such a comprehensive system. It does so by focusing on the process itself. The book proposes a set of fundamental concepts to guide analysis and a classification framework for organizing knowledge, and describes the publicly available online knowledge base developed by the project, which includes a set of representative templates and specific case examples as well as a set of software tools for organizing and sharing knowledge.
Organizing Business Knowledge: The MIT Process Handbook includes twenty-one papers, some previously published and some appearing for the first time, that have come out of this decade-long project. Together, they form a comprehensive and coherent vision of the future of knowledge organization. The Handbook is organized into five parts: an introduction and overview; the presentation of a theory of process representation; "Contents of the Process Repository"; "Process Repository Uses," which gives examples from both research and practice; and a conclusion, which maps the progress so far and the challenges ahead.

Product Description
"Information Commons" often refers to the theoretical production, sharing, and democratic discussion of information that is afforded by new technologies. It also refers to the physical manifestation of this concept - new facilities that bring together researchers, instructors, students, teachers, and users into one space and equip them with technology (computers, projectors, Internet) and facilities (workstations, conference and class rooms, print stations) for success. In this comprehensive guidebook, Beagle helps academic, public, and school librarians create new spaces that encourage research, discovery, instruction, and learning and meld the traditional research library with the latest technology. This comprehensive handbook guides librarians through: Space planning, budgeting, and technology set-up; Service modification, staff reallocation, and training; Assessment, improvement, and modification of services and facilities, and Publicity and marketing of the new commons. Descriptions, photographs, and plans from information commons of various types and sizes are included. The companion CD-ROM features model plans from various institutions and working documents from successful information commons projects. Grounded in the theory of information commons, this forward-looking handbook will transform traditional spaces and redefine library service models for the information age.
Customer Reviews:
Excerpts from all five reviews.......2007-08-05
Since its October 2006 release, The Information Commons Handbook has received five reviews in the professional media, and all five have been highly favorable. In a "starred" review in Library Journal (1/15/07), Robert L. Battenfield wrote "There is a great deal of information here from a knowledgeable IC expert...Recommended for all librarians, library directors, library science faculty, and students with a keen interest in this timely issue." In American Libraries (Jan 2007) Mary Ellen Quinn commented "...according to The Information Commons Handbook, the [IC] concept is about more than technology; it is about 'how an organization reshapes itself around people using technology in pursuit of learning.'...this book provides a framework and useful tools for making the process a more proactive one." In the well-regard Canadian journal Partnership, Cees-Jan de Jong states that the IC Handbook "...is much more than a guide to developing a Commons in your library, rather it's a guide that will assist you in positioning your library to take advantage of collaboration, technology, and educational movements...[the book] is well-organized and thoroughly researched...recommended for library administrators, librarians (academic, school, and public), faculty, and teachers interested in realizing a new service model..." And in the July 2007 issue of portal: Libraries & the Academy, Robert A. Seal notes that: "...Beagle is a pioneer in the development of the concept and is perhaps the best-known name in the field." The book, he adds, is "...one of the most thorough and thoughtful analyses of its type in the literature...a thoroughly researched and thought-provoking volume that will be of use to practitioners and administrators alike."

Book Description
This is the state-of-the-art, international handbook for a field of inquiry that is still emergent and yet occupies a central position in contemporary management and organization theory. Mark Easterby-Smith and Marjorie Lyles have drawn together in their authoritative reference work original essays from the leading scholars in organizational learning and knowledge management around the world. Not least in importance is the linkage they make between these two adjacent areas: learning and knowledge are often debated separately despite their close relationship. In this volume leading scholars from the fields of organizational learning, the learning organization, knowledge management and organizational knowledge, examine the issues and debates, as well as the processes and management implications, that are key to each of these approaches. The resulting set of essays offers researchers and students an invaluable guide.Tracing the roots of learning and knowledge debates across the disciplines of economics, psychology, and social theory, and charting the key contributions scholars have made, this is a major, in-depth overview which all scholars of organizational learning and knowledge management will need on their shelves.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect for a beginner in consulting.......2007-01-09
This book is an excellent introduction to performance consulting. It assumes that you already have the "tools" and know-how to address performance needs, so the focus is on the consulting process itself. What I found especially useful were the question lists. In almost every chapter, Hale includes a list of questions you might ask your client in order to guide them and pinpoint the exact issue and identify the best solution. This is the side of consulting that is often given little attention in books and in the classroom, but is of vital importance.
Another worthwhile highlight is the coverage on how to actually run a consulting business - in terms of financial considerations, record-keeping, etc. Another great book that goes into more depth on the "running your business" aspect is The Business of Consulting by Elaine Biech.
