Over the last decade or so research into bullying, emotional abuse and harassment at work, as distinct from harassment based on sex or race and primarily of a non-physical nature, has emerged as a new field of study. Two main academic streams have emerged: a European tradition applying the concept of 'mobbing' or 'bullying' and the American tradition, primarily identified through concepts such as emotional abuse and mistreatment. One focuses on the perpetrator, the other on the victim. In addition, research in this field has also started in Australia and South Africa. All are brought together in this work, in a synthesis of research and analysis of practice in the field. Bullying and Emotional Abuse in the Workplace aims to document the existence and consequences of the problem of bullying, to explore its causes and to investigate the effectiveness of approaches aimed at mitigating and managing the problem, as well as to offer suggestions for further progress in this important new field.

This book makes an excellent supplement to any text in a career development course. Swanson and Fouad utilize 7 different theoretical approaches in order to integrate and apply career development theory.
The case studies make excellent use of theory and actual practice.

Good overview........2004-04-05
This book presents a good overview of topics in Organizational and Industrial Psychology and was helpful to me in studying for a course. However, I am appalled and irritated with the amount of typographical errors in a book that cost me $100. There's an error on every other page! I've encountered at least five just this evening. The content is good but the proofreading needs a lot of attention.

I am a PhD candidate who is working on emotions in workplace. I have reviewed lots of books and professional articles in this field. One issue in this area is that there are as many theories as the number of theorists. Although 'emotional intelligence (EI)' has earned popular interests, in fact, there are a lot of issues that should be addressed and that was intentionally or unintentionally ignored by those EI scholars. This book provides a very useful and comprehensive guide to such issues. If you really want to understand emotionality in workplace, read this book. Summary chapters will also provide an excellant viewpoint not only to scholars in this area but also to practitioners.
