Customer Reviews:
Foundations of Business Coaching.......2007-02-12
This book is an excellent expose of one of the primary sources, and the development of principles and techniques of business coaching from that starting point. He refers frequently to the work of Tim Gallwey and his inner game books. I was familiar with Gallwey's work, and appreciated the excellent organization, content and style of the book.
I found the book also to be of significant value to anyone who wishes to contribute to other people's success, be it in family, social, or other relationships. Parents should find the content valuable in moving from the control stage of parenting to the empowering stage of parenting.
Valuable coaching classic.......2007-01-10
Whitmore has provided a very good secular overview and guide to coaching in Coaching for Performance (I am a Christian coach). It is easy to read and gives lots of examples of using coaching technique in everyday life and work. It appeals to me as a classic as Whitmore came in at the early days of coaching and writes with clarity and enthusiasm. In this edition outlines its development. I purchased this book as it was often quoted in the Life Caoching couse I studied as part of a theology degree.
As someone with a sporting background I find his many references to sports coaching quite natural, however I can see this as an irritation to anyone who has never experienced coaching in the sporting arena. These references however do add to the readers' understanding of coaching technique and practice. I would recommend this book to anyone new to coaching, but would suggest further study and supervised practice if you want to do more than simply use a few coaching techniques in your worlplace and everyday life.
Good all round resource.......2007-01-10
I found this book very good as it gives a good general background to coaching as well as an introduction to coaching in the corporate environment. There were some parts that I did not agree with as I felt they contradicted the basic coaching principle of always working in clients agenda, but, that said, it is a good overall resource.
Really Excellent Book for Coaching Introduction.......2006-11-07
If you are new to the coaching topic, this book helps give you a general understanding to coaching using the GROW model. Very helpful!
great original book on coaching - still work a read!.......2006-03-18
This book was outstanding when it first came out - and it has truly stood the test of time. Sir John provides a welcome breath of reach air from the often all too frequent US-based and over-hyped coaching genre. Along with Thomas Lenard, Sir John Whitmore is one of the real pioneers of life coaching and workplace coaching. A great book.

Book Description
A compendium of coaching resources.
Life coaching has burst on the scene both as an adjunct to psychotherapy and as an alternative to it. With the myriad of coaching styles and programs available, it can be difficult to focus on any particular strategy. Here leading coach trainer Pat Williams presents 52 essential skills and techniques that can be applied to a variety of life coaching situations.
Customer Reviews:
A "Must Have" Book For All Coaches.......2007-06-27
Thank you, Pat Williams, for writing Total Life Coaching. It is a wonderful resource book that every coach should have at their fingertips, whether they have been coaching one year or many years. It is not just one of the many books on general coaching philosophy and techniques. Total Life Coaching is written with a "how to" approach. It is organized into a wide rage of categories of coaching topics. Each category contains a rich menu of information, exercises, creative coaching approaches, and examples of coaching conversations. I know I will be using the wisdom of Total Life Coaching for every client I have.
Total Life Coaching - Dr. Patrick Williams.......2007-05-31
very interesting book - easy to read and useful for both the beginner and someone who has experience within the coaching profession
big book- dissapointing content.......2007-02-13
I was puzzled by much of the content of this book- probably based in part on the high expectations I had after reading some reviews here. Coaching as I know it focuses on the client's values and the agenda comes from the client rather than the coach. This book is full of exercises and "good ideas", but it seems to be infused with many of the writers' own personal opinions, agenda, and biases.
I am concerned that those who are new to coaching will be tempted to "lead", "know", analyze or attempt to "fix" their clients, rather than partner with clients with genuine curiousity to create what they want based on their own (the clients) values and agenda. Granted there are many effective syles of "coaching" and modalities. As a CTI trained life coach I admit I have a bias towards a more co-active, and less therapeutic model.
An essential tool!.......2007-02-08
This is an essential tool for any practicing life coach. I use this book as a constant resource. It is easy to find the information you are looking for. It is direct and to the point. If you are a professional life coach you must have this on your bookshelf.
Content did not live up to its introduction.......2006-01-30
Unfortunately I purchased 7 copies of this book for a coaching program I was doing before I had read it. The cover information and introduction were intriguing. However, I found the content thin and failing to deliver on the promises laid out in the introduction of the book as well as the introduction of each chapter. I liked ideas that they told me they would tell me about; the authors delivered thin regurgitated material.

If most coaching guides look as if you'd need a coach just to get through them, you'll love this itty-bitty guide, which zooms in on the most important aspects of organizational-workplace coaching, from selecting an effective personal coaching style and preparing and shaping a coaching session to followup steps, dealing with barriers to coaching, troubleshooting, and more advanced coaching, such as team coaching, long-distance coaching, coaching plus appraising, and assessing your own coaching skills. On every page, boxed "power tips," quickie case studies and self-tests, to-do checklists, and easy-to-follow flowcharts demystify the process. Granted, if you're looking for specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do just fine.
It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling-Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision-making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies series' talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-sized bits and sidebars with Dorling-Kindersley's signature, crisp graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective.
Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute, and look so smart in a neat little stack or row, that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire department or staff. --Timothy Murphy

Power Tips from two experts in the field..........2001-05-08
John Eaton holds a doctorate in psychology and is a senior partner of Coaching solutions. They provide coaching and cultural change programs for managers and directors. Roy Johnson has extensive senior management experience and runs Pace, an award-winning training company. Together they also have written Business Applications of NLP.
If you want to learn all you need to know about helping people to achieve their full potential, then you will enjoy Coaching Successfully. This book will show you how to motivate others, promote initiative and help others to take responsibility.
Your coaching style will need to be adapted when dealing with a group and you will also enjoy reading about how to overcome negativity. There are power tips throughout the book which help you to handle real-life situations and increase your effectiveness.
In today's business environment, e-mail can also be used for coaching, however they advise you not to use it for "personal" coaching. At the end of the book, you can evaluate your own coaching skills.
"Raise your expectations and ask people to live up to them." -pg. 62 "Allow people to learn from their own mistakes." -pg. 63 "Motivate staff by linking their personal goals to the company's aims." -pg. 20
These power tips are very useful and there are so many great ideas contained in this mini book. It won't take a long time to read, but you will be able to be a more positive influence on others and will know how to bring out the best in those you work with.

When signing his eldest son up for Little League baseball, Ned McIntosh was told he'd have to find a coach if he wanted his son to play. So McIntosh stepped up to the plate and, with little guidance, began coaching. That's probably how most people become Little League coaches, and they often feel at a complete loss as to where to start. Written by a father/coach for other parent/coaches, Little League Drills and Strategies teaches coaches how to help their players enjoy the game--as well as develop the skills they need to win. Well-illustrated drills focus on the essentials--batting, base running, fielding, etc.--while other chapters teach novice coaches how to deal with competition and overbearing parents. An excellent resource for coaching neophytes as well as seasoned managers. --Sunny Delaney

Little League Drills and Strategies.......2006-07-02
I got this book for my son for Father's Day. He is a Little League coach and he loved it! He said it would be a big help with his kids!
Very High Level - discusses more on the league setup.......2006-03-30
I bought this thinking it would be for an introductory coach.... it is more on the rules and very high level. for example the book reads - "make sure you get the right bat for the batter" and does not explain how to measure right bat height......same is true for the height of the tee...... disappointing.
I'm going to buy another book......
Great book for new coaches.......2005-07-21
I recently returned to coaching and really thought this book helped me get back into it!
A Must-Have for Coaches and Parents.......2005-01-20
I am not a coach but I try to know as much as I can about the sports that my children are involved. My husband and I used some of the drill techniques with our children and the results were great. We did not get frustrated and we had a great family time. My husband stepped into the "assistant coaches" position half way into the season and he saw marvelous results by using these drills. The team begged to practice some of the drills! A must-have for all coaches!

Instant gratification junkies seeking self-awareness are bound to find the title of Ariel and Shya Kane's book extremely attractive. And seductive it is: who wouldn't like to discover enlightenment in a moment? The key, explain the Kanes, is getting to the moment: being fully present in the here and now without trying to manipulate or change what you see. According to the Kanes, "all problems are a projection towards the future of possible realities based on the past." Consequently, inhibitors to living life directly include the inability to let go of one's history--to forgive people and events from the past--as well as resistance to the circumstances of one's life, and repetitive, mechanical thoughts and behaviors. The essence of transformation is "a non-judgmental witnessing, viewing, or seeing of yourself and how you interact with your life," which stands in direct opposition to therapy's approach of working on one's history to bring about change. Here, awareness of a prejudice or pattern of behavior is--simply and immediately--enough to transform it.
Principles of awareness, self-realization, and enlightenment, of course, are nothing new, and the Kanes are careful to point this out. Some readers may wonder, then, why the Kanes refer to themselves as pioneers of a "revolutionary new technology," and whether Instantaneous Transformation(R) really requires a trademark. Nevertheless, Working on Yourself Doesn't Work is warm, anecdotal, and conversationally written, and includes general suggestions and pointers for the reader rather than rules to memorize. All in all, it is a gentle and potentially powerful invitation to enter a new and liberating state of mind. --Svenja Soldovieri
Book Description
Working On Yourself Doesn't Work reveals a revolutionary new approach that will allow you to reach a state of awareness and "centeredness" that in the past was rarely, if ever, achieved. This book contains the keys to transform your life. It is a radical departure from the concept of working on yourself to bring about change. There are no gimmicks to learn, no rules to live by, or preset paths to follow. The Kanes' Instantaneous Transformation technology is about a change of states, a shifting of realities -- which will produce a quantum shift in your life. By reading this book, you will discover-- How to remain centered in stressful or challenging circumstances, A more honest, true and natural way of being that will allow you to be increasingly effective and satisfied in all aspects of your life, How to have relationships that are more loving, exciting and supportive, How to dissolve mechanical habits that rob you of spontaneity, joy and creativity.
"The clarity and focus I have attained by being exposed to the Kanes and their way of seeing makes the difference between life and death when leading my men down a smoke-filled hallway, searching for people trapped by fire. I feel extremely fortunate to have met them."
Lieutenant Mike Donlon
New York City Fire Department."
"What the Kanes have to offer is so very simple and yet so very profound. In the garden of all the flowers for personal transformation, and I have sampled many, this is the Rose. With great love and respect, the Kanes offer keys to awareness like no one else I have ever met. Their work is truly remarkable." Johnnie M. Jackson, Jr.Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary
Olin Corporation
Customer Reviews:
Life really can be this simple. WOW!!!!!! YEN Florida.......2007-03-27
I am a professional female that has felt out of place since I was 13. I have seen therapists and searched for something to fix myself my whole life. I have read many self help books and done The Landmark Forum. In 1998 I landed in an AA room and was taught the 12 Steps of recovery. I read the BIG BOOK and thought the stories were exaggerated since I couldn't relate to them. I stopped drinking and took the suggested steps; taking a "fearless moral inventory" of myself by identifying my so called defects of character. As I grew in recovery, I was to take a daily inventory of myself which constantly reinforced that there was always something wrong with me that needed fixing. I now have 7 years of uninterrupted sobriety and recently I had the pleasure of reading the book "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work" and WOW!!! Did I get it...
See in AA we strive to live a day at a time but to be able to live a moment at a time was not something I had ever considered (I mean who can live in the moment there is so much to plan for?). It wasn't by doing the 12 steps that I learned I was living my life based on exaggerated truths made up as a child. These ideas ranged from "don't let anyone ever tell you what to do "to" don't ever depend on any man". These ideas never supported me in my life. They in fact have hindered every relationship I ever had whereby I never married or had children.
Now that I am aware of those ideas thru reading this book, I have never looked back or thought about them again. I have quit trying to work on myself. I have accepted my life and everything about it.
My life is so easy today. I have actually been able to save a relationship that I unconsciously have been sabotaging for the last 3 years. I saw clearly why I was afraid of success. Since I now have the insights, I choose not to go back to the past and judge myself or others for anything that happened. I also choose not to spend time in a place that doesn't exist yet. I can just concentrate on the fabulous moment and how it feels to be here right now. Talk about freedom from the bondage of self. My shackles have been taken off permanently. Thank you to Ariel and Shya for sharing their incredible experiences with the world and most importantly for the ease in which they do it.
disappointing.......2007-03-12
I orded this too quickly and should have looked closer at the inside, and the reviews. Its just another of many "God is who you want him to be, find your own way..nirvana, happy place yada yada written to sell, not to help books..I have to say that if God is who you want him to be?? then how could HE be God? Must be YOU thats God..anyway the book was disgustingly typical.
Classic guide book to living in the moment.......2007-03-09
There have been many insightful and helpful books written over time on the subject of living in the moment and only one that stands out for me as the best...and this book is it. It's the best in my opinion because the tools and ideas presented truly work in creating a life where lasting satisfaction and fulfillment can happen. It is definitely possible to live in the moment, day in day out, where the bumps on your life's road do not need to throw you off your path. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in living a life they dream of...it's possible for you because it's happened and continues to happen for me in my own life.
The Best Book I Know.......2006-11-15
The title of this book may seem enigmatic, but it is the foundation of having a wonderful life. The reader may wonder, If I don't work on myself, won't I become complacent? Not at all! The reason that working on yourself doesn't work, the Kanes explain, is that it presupposes that there is something wrong with you. But, as their second principle states, you can only be exactly as you are in any given moment. As long as you imagine you are messed up and in need of repair you resist the way that your life is showing up. This leads to the first principle: anything that you resist persists and grows stronger. If you want to see a behavior stick around, resistance - the adding of oppositional energy - will do the trick.
Although working on yourself doesn't work, there is much you can discover about your mechanical ways of operating that can improve the quality of your life. Through awareness - defined by the Kanes as the non-judgmental seeing of anything - your experience of living can shift without your having to do anything else. This is encompassed by the Kanes' third principle: anything you see exactly as it is will complete itself.
Does it sound all too simple? It is, and it works. This is why I recommend this book, more than any other, to the people in my life. After years of searching for well being - attending workshops, reading numerous books, and even staying on a farm to find a better way of living - Working on Yourself Doesn't Work is the only thing that I have found that does work. Read again and again, the book makes life easy, magical, and effortless.
Internal Light!.......2006-10-29
"Working on yourself doesn't work"- I have read this book over and over again for nearly two years. The interesting title initially got my attention, but ten minutes into reading it, I knew I had found a treasure!
There are many books out there that lift your spirits, but not often have I found something written with such clarity and wisdom. Beauty and simplicity shine through the core concept - Transformation. In reading this book I came to realize nothing produces happiness like the deep satisfication which comes from within: If I am true to myself, and not judging what I see, I can simply be me and be there for others. Powerful!I highly recommend anyone who is interesed in having a great life to read this book!

When you need to know how to teach pitching..........2007-04-03
When my son turned 9, and was going into kid-pitch for the first time, he thought he wanted to be a pitcher. What did I know about pitching? Not much. Randy Voorhees...if you read this...thank you.
This book let me turn a scrawny kid into not just a pitcher, but a closer. The drills in the book are simple to follow, and backed by intelligent explanations of WHY they work. By breaking the pitching motion down into a series of simple, understandable steps, my son and I worked together to build a delivery that focused on accuracy and control, not brute power and speed.
By the middle of his second season in kid pitch, he knew if he got the nod in the 4th inning, that it was his job to hold the lead...and he never failed. By learning to have control and accuracy, my son never worried about his ability...he simply learned to focus on each pitch, one at a time. He learned that with only modest speed and good movement on his pitches, he could beat 85% of the hitters on strikes, 10% on contact ground balls and pop-ups, and 5% of the kids were going to make good contact NO MATTER WHAT...and that's what fielders are for.
Why so much about my kid? Well, there's no better testimonial about a book than the great results achieved by following the advice therein.
Randy Voorhees...my son and I thank you for two great years in kid pitch, and two "World Series" trophies on my son's wall as proof of your program.

Leadership Coaching.......2007-03-08
This is an excellent book for someone wanting to get questions to use for stimulating discussion and thinking in others. My tendency is to want to just tell people what is so obvious to me rather than let them get to that place through their own thinking. The book is chock full of questions to use on lots of different levels. I have found it very useful.
Comprehensive and Practical for Pastors.......2007-01-25
I coach small groups at my home church and even wrote a pocket book on coaching myself. I also consult pastors and churches through my organization, and recommend this book to every single pastor I speak to when it comes to coaching their small groups. What I have found in this book is a unique wealth of knowledge on how to develop others to coach... something that few authors write about, and even fewer Christian authors write about. Most coaching books are how to coach someone directly... this bumps it up the ladder a rung for the person developing those who will coach. Excellent read. I wish Amazon.com had six stars so I could choose more than 5 for this book.
Excellent resource for coach development.......2007-01-10
Being a seasoned teacher but new to coaching I valued Leadership Coaching for its wealth of practical examples and development of questioning technique. This book fitted in very well with my Life Coaching study completed as part of a theological degree with its own emphasis on development of character of the coach. Stolzfus through his many examples and exercises is very valuable in developing coaching skill and confidence, especially in questioning. The book fits very well alongside Whitmore's, Coaching for Performance and Collins', Christian Coaching.
A Pleasant Surprise!.......2007-01-09
I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered "Leadership Coaching". I am a Life Coach who is also a Christian, and wanted to learn more about combining my faith with my coaching, without pushing it onto my clients.
What I liked about this book was that it had a ton of valuable coaching information, but also backed up the coaching principles with scripture. The content could be used with any client you are working with and it is very easy to digest, even if you're brand new to coaching. This book would be very beneficial to anyone in ministry, even if you aren't interested in becoming a coach.
I got a TON of valuable information out of this book and am very thankful to have a resource with Christian principles that was not over the top or "preachy". Just good solid coaching and communication principles with biblical backing.
Coaching Skills.......2006-11-28
I have this book and am taking a coaching course. The book is excellent and I would recommend it highly. It is very insightful and easy to read.

Support new and veteran principals through coaching-based professional development!
Research shows conclusively that principals and other school leaders are essential to school improvement, and that these individuals benefit from the intensive, contextualized support that a coach or mentor can provide. But how does a coach support a school leader in mastering the professional and emotional challenges of school leadership for a meaningful and positive impact on students?
This book, grounded in research and theory, provides readers with practical skills and strategies for leadership coaching explicitly tied to the needs of principals and other school leaders. It makes sense of the often contradictory literature on coaching by promoting a new approach, that of "Blended Coaching." This model-based on more than 15 years of fieldwork at the renowned New Teacher Center, University of California, Santa Cruz-recognizes that effective coaches move between facilitative and instructional approaches in their practice, and has made a meaningful difference in dozens of school districts nationwide.
Designed for individuals and institutions charged with improving principal retention, teacher satisfaction, and student achievement, this indispensable resource features:
- Real-life examples to enforce key concepts
- Reflective prompts to enhance assimilation
- Insightful exercises for coaches, principals, and colleagues
