Customer Reviews:
Great reference/cheat sheet.......2007-07-26
I have used this book on all my performance reviews, it is so good, that I could not stop picking phrases from it, and my boss had to tell me to be "less verbose" in my self assessment!
Book for new managers.......2007-07-15
This book was recommended in one of my management classes. I was able view it during one of the class breaks. Immediately, I knew it will save me time and effort. Many useful phrases to help and prompt thoughts for reviewing team members.
A good guide .......2007-07-05
I purchased this guide for the supervisors on my team because it gives phrases to use when appraising employees. Its also gives phrases to use when writing awards or other evaulations of performance. The guide is organized into different areas-teamwork, communication skills, productivity, etc. which helps find helpful phrases to use. This guide is simple but elegant in its usefulness.
Who needs this? .......2007-06-12
If I sat on a toilet all day thinking of sycophantic half-sentences, this is probably what I'd come up with. I hate to think about what the brain-dead, incompetent boob who needs a book like this looks like.
It's management speak like this crap that inspired movies like Office Space and television shows such as The Office and Just Shoot Me. On that note, maybe I should give this book five stars.
One thing's for certain, anyone in your office who orders this book should be fired immediately.
Helpful Tool.......2007-05-16
Very helpful tool in writing performance reviews and avoiding redundancy when writing performance reviews.

Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2001-09-18
Kimball Fisher and Mareen Duncan Fisher document the special skills needed for the new but increasingly common task of managing far-flung work groups. The approaches that they examine are becoming increasingly essential for all managers. Although they explore relevant technologies carefully, their human relations advice is probably more important. The Fishers emphasize the interpersonal and leadership skills that a manager needs to head a virtual team. If you read this book cover to cover, it can seem repetitive, since many of the rules and tips offered in one area overlap with those in other areas. However, the book is designed to allow you to review specific management challenges and technologies, and to ignore areas that are irrelevant to your situation. We [...] recommend this clear, practical work to anyone who leads virtual teams and to the telecommuters and freelance workers who report to them.
Ideas on Distance Management.......2001-07-18
This book presents a new approach to managing people from distance. It also gives clear examples and cases. This book is a must for managers who control their team from distance, either nationwide or global-wide.

Customer Reviews:
Not a bad book........2007-05-28
This book was helpful, but not as much as I'd hoped. It would be best for someone new to writing reviews.
Specific, actionable and measurable reviews........2007-03-02
This is definitely a practical and usable book. A very good starting point for designing and writing performance reviews, especially with its wide scope of job types, and generous lists of example phrases for providing feedback and setting goals. I won't say it's perfect (despite rating it with 5 stars), because I think users of the book need to be aware that no off-the-shelf solution can work in every situation. Using this book shouldn't be about "copy and paste" but about conscious selection, finetuning and design.
That said, the majority of the phrases provided are very specific, actionable and measurable (very importantly). Paul provides a great model and great direction in an area that way too often is fraught with subjectivity, bias, poor judgement and fear.
2600 Phrases for Effective Performance Reviews.......2007-01-16
I would definitely recommend this book. I am presently involved in developing a template for a new Performance Appraisal for my company. The performance phrases in this book helped me define the guidlines for how to rate a performance in our work environment. Good reference book to have around.
A great tool.......2006-01-04
I think this book is just great. It really helps you think about the performance of your direct reports and to articulate it clearly. I appreciate the way the book is laid out too - very helpful "goals" section helps you give constructive feedback to your employees. This book literally sits open on my desk as I write each review.
Great Book! Just what I needed........2005-07-14
As soon as my book arrived, I started flipping through the pages reading a few of the phrases on each when I realized this book is exactly what I need. I've been putting off my own performance review for several months now (yeah, I work for a manager - the CEO - who is very bad at completing performance reviews). As if writing an effective performance review isn't a daunting enough task, for me at least, it's ten times more difficult when it's my own performance I have to rate. I'm my own worst critic and this book is going to help me be more objective. Every page contains relevant phrases that I know I'll use over and over again. This will become an integral part of my HR Toolset! P.S. - I stayed up past midnight & completed my performance review. It was a breeze!

Tens of thousands of professionals have attended David W. Merrill's acclaimed "Style Awareness Workshops" The goal: improvement of interpersonal effectiveness skills-inspiring better communication, improved productivity, and a more harmonious working environment. Students preparing for business, management, or sales careers can also benefit from Merrill's techniques, presented in Personal Styles & Effective Performance. Merrill's approach emphasizes the interrelationships between behavior and social style-encouraging students to consider how their own actions influence responsiveness from others. Those actions tend to be rooted in one of four primary social styles: Analytical, Amiable, Driving, and Expressive-which readers are invited to compare and contrast with their own styles, as a starting point for potential improvement. First published in 1981, Personal Styles & Effective Performance continues to be a popular resource for the self-improvement minded. By learning its lessons now, tomorrow's business professionals can have the edge in interpersonal effectiveness-one of the most important facets of a successful career.

Great Book for anyone who is in a position that deals with other people!!! (also for anyone who wants to improve on their communication skills with day to day people)
Personal Styles and Effective Performance.......2007-02-01
One of the best resources to really understand the "Social Styles" personality typology. Written by the pioneer researcher, the book is written with the rigour of a personality theorist, but is very accessible and applicable.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2006-10-24
I only read the table of contents and skimmed the first few chapters. Based on that, though, I can say that anyone who is considering leading a certification program should read this book. The checklist at the end of Chapter 1 is itself worth the price of the book. Outlines four simple things that have to happen at the beginning of a good certification program.
Must read.......2004-03-17
Having worked with certification for a number of years, I have found this to be the best and most comprehensive book on the subject. We use it as a corporate reference book. It is filled with practical advice.
A very valuable tool for anyone in certification.......2000-09-06
Judith Hale did a great job mapping out how to build a Certification program. In a step by step process, she guides you the process and points out how to avoid the pitfalls.
This book is logical, easy to follow and can be applied to many fields.
If you are thinking of certification, I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
George Kohlrieser—an international leadership professor, consultant, and veteran hostage negotiator—explains that it is only by openly facing conflict that we can truly progress through the most difficult business challenges. In this provocative book, he reveals how the proven techniques and psychological insights used in hostage negotiation can be applied successfully to any personal or business relationship. Step by step, he outlines the seven key factors that anyone can use to remove the blocks that stand in the way of resolving tough problems and shows how business leaders, in particular, can develop and access the skills they need to create trust and a positive mind-set in their companies.
Customer Reviews:
George Kohlrieser Is A Genius!.......2007-05-01
George Kohlrieser understands the brain. Hostage at the Table is packed with wonderful insights into how your mind works....in business and in life. It is a readable book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. George has a gift for making the complex clear and easy to understand. He has connected up some very important dots regarding leadership and the brain. Chapter 2 is worth the price of the book alone! I am giving a copy to each of our kids.

Why you shouldn't let yourself be held hostage at work.......2007-05-01
If a dangerous criminal was demanding a one-way ticket to Venezuela as he threatened to blow your brains out, the person you would most want to see coming onto the scene is author George Kohlrieser. A psychologist and veteran hostage negotiator who has diffused explosive situations around the globe, Kohlrieser now applies his knowledge, motivational insights and techniques to the business world. He contends that conflict resolution is not difficult if you understand how human self-esteem operates. The basic negotiating principles he presents may have been noted in other psychology and business management texts, but Kohlrieser's credibility and unique approach give his ideas an added kick. For example, he uses real-life hostage negotiations to illustrate his points. We think you'll find that this whole package is definitely a nonnegotiable demand.
A masterpiece in terms both of content and reader friendliness! .......2007-04-12
This book is a masterpiece in terms both of content and reader friendliness!
It is a distillation of the wisdom from an extraordinary, life long, experience of the author, on countless business - and not only - leadership settings, practically in any part of the world.
The reader will be walked through "an emotional experience that will stimulate his heart, mind and spirit", so that - in a unique practical way - will be taken to "new places in his personal and professional life".
He will understand (1) the power of the mind's eye (the way we view the world - "weltanschaung"), (2) the primary need ("just like air, food and water") of a secure base ("never to be left without one!") that results from bonding to other people and from bonding to stimulating concepts (goals, countries, objects, beliefs, religions...) and (3) the art of conflict resolution (through effective dialogue, negotiations and E.Q. management).
Based on the above ideas, Professor George Kohlrieser is showing to all of us how to live with a "hostage-free state of mind" and to achieve high performance in our lives and our corporations.
George concludes: "Take time to reclaim yourself and decide to be who you want to be. Live life as an adventure, a journey, and view it as an opportunity to learn, to contribute, to grow every minute, every hour, every day. Accept the tremendous power that is within you, and, with humility, make the choices that you want in order to enable your life to be fulfilling with a hostage-free state of mind".
Personally, I would like to express publicly my sincere gratitude for the opportunity that I had to read this exceptional book. I have no other words but to recommend this book for everyone who wishes to become an effective leader for the benefit of his company, himself, his family, his friends and associates, and the world as a whole...

Hostage at the Table- good reference.......2007-04-10
I found this work to be a good reference to a collection of many other works. I would not consider this a book for "reading." It has some useful gems, but is sometimes redundant and repetitive.

Customer Reviews:
Must-Read for Today's Business Executive and Shareholders Alike.......2006-01-31
With the increased scrutiny on company accounting practices, executive compensation, and the Board's role in setting strategy, this book on corporate governance is an extremely timely and important one. The authors thoughtfully detail the issues Boards face, how best to work with CEOs and plan for their successor, and develop strategies for effective leadership. There's even a section on Boards for companies outside the U.S., which I found extremely valuable.
For anyone interested in how Boards work and the steps they need to take going forward (and I think any shareholder should be), this is essential reading. Highly recommended.
Thoughtful and timely.......2006-01-30
This is a superb book. Comprehensive and well-written, it addresses a vitally important topic with innovative ideas and practical solutions. In a field increasing crowded with prescriptions for solving the dilemmas of corporate governance, Building Better Boards stands out as a book worth reading.

Book Description
Offers an empirical, ``total'' system approach that determines which characteristics of managers enable them to be effective in various management jobs. Presents a large-scale, intensive study (2,000 managers holding 41 different jobs in 12 organizations) that provides a context for identifying the special characteristics, as well as assessing and developing managerial talent. Develops a logical, integrated model of managerial competence that explains the relationship of these characteristics to each other, to the functions of the management job, and to the key aspects of the internal organizational environment. Also introduces a model of individual competence.

Overarching Management Competencies -- It's Not All About Relationships.......2006-09-26
In "The Competent Manager: A Model for Effective Performance" Richard Boyatzis uses empirical data to define the competencies of effective leaders. While many of today's `leadership' books are overly generalized leadership philosophies or biographies of leader idiosyncrasies that worked in special situations, few books are specific in enumerating overarching leadership competencies. Boyatzis has been very disciplined in empirically measuring competencies that enable leadership success in earning business results. In light of Boyatzis's more recent work in Emotional Intelligence, one might anticipate that emotionally intelligent operational managers would evaluate and review their individual management competencies to identify their most relevant opportunities for either developing their deficient competencies or partnering with co-leaders who compliment their identified shortcomings. "The Competent Manager", though a difficult read, would be a valuable starting point for one's initial competency self-evaluation.
I recommend "The Competent Manager: A Model for Effective Performance" for anyone leading their organization's initiatives for leadership and management development.
Excellent book for understanding management competencies.......1999-02-17
Boyatzis offers a critical look at what makes up management competencies. It contains much more than just "what someone thinks," or "what looks right." This book's findings come from extensive research. It is an excellent book for someone serious about understanding what makes a manager competent.
