3 out of 5 stars Too difficult to read and follow.......2006-08-15

Boy! It is really hard to follow and understand those Chinese translation. One thing I notice in this book is the method to use Lo P'an that you should stand at the center of the house, not the front door to measure the directions. It is easy to see the different result when you apply it. It would be more practical and useful if authour told us the sequence and priority to apply each Feng Shui school when practice. Otherwise, it just one school violate the other.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for!.......2005-11-15

This isn't the easiest book to either read or understand, but there's an incredibly amount of information packed into a relatively small book.

I don't think this is a very good first book for Feng Shui, but it's a great great library addition! I too would recommend The Idiot's Guide to Feng Shui for a first introduction. THEN buy this book, as it adds to it by quite a bit.

I wish there were a stronger focus on remedies, I have yet to find a feng shui book that covers all the potential remedies for all the different circumstance. Every Feng Shui book spends a huge part in the beginning explaining Feng Shui... if you are a total beginner, a book of this type won't make sense anyway, fast intro notwithstanding. If you are not, it's just wasted pages, because every book covers the intro over and over again.

I'm still looking for that perfect book that dispenses with the Feng Shui intros and leads right into remedies... ie., the Host/Guest relationship in this book uses as it's only example a positive positive. What happens when you have a 6M 5T 4W combo in a critically active office? What do you do? I have yet to see a single book that answers this (if any readers can answer this, please email me!). I give it a 5, because it's the most comprehensive book of 5 I own on the subject next to the Idiot's Guide.

4 out of 5 stars covering the basics.......2005-10-22

It is a great book to get the formulas down. With practice, you can definately fly the stars. Suggested remedies are sometimes not appropriate because other unforseen variables are not discussed. Deeper explanations of number combinations would make it that much better. In general though, It is good to get started with and opens the door to a very powerful system.

5 out of 5 stars A good addition to your feng shui library.......2003-08-21

I bought this book a few weeks ago and have been going through it very slowly. There is a lot of information here. You need to digest it a bit at a time, rather than plough through it.

Stephen Skinner gives detailed information - he covers the theories, formulas, interpretations and room by room analysis thoroughly. He also includes fascinating history on feng shui - making this more than a 'how to' book. I also like the fact that he explains the "wild stars" such as the Grand Duke Jupiter. Other feng shui books were sometimes not very clear on these and his explanations really helped me to understand them better.

Lots of great charts in here, plus an excellent appendix with information on Chinese Dynasties and Feng Shui Chronology and more! His list of the typical analysis sequence in the back also gives a great idea of what to include in a feng shui diagnosis.

I would definitely recommend this book. Add the following books, and your feng shui library is complete:
The Complete Idiots Guide to Feng Shui by Moran and Yu
Principles of Feng Shui by Larry Sang
A Master Course in Feng Shui by Eva Wong

5 out of 5 stars Rich & Rewarding! A must-have for any student of feng shui!.......2003-08-14

There's a method of traditional feng shui called Flying Star. For the uninitiated, it's akin to knowing the astrology of your home: the probability of auspicious or inauspicious health-, wealth-, and relationship-related events occuring within your living and/or working space. Flying Star is a numbers game. The year your home was built along with the building's directionality produces a numeric qi map. The configuration of numbers tell you what's going on now and what can possibly happen in the future. Once you know the numbers that correlate with a specific area within your home, you then set about enhancing good prospects and discouraging the bad ones. How? Well, you'll have to read the book! I'm a big fan of Stephen Skinner's work. In this book, he begins with the fundamentals of Chinese cosmology. Then, step-by-step, he shows you how to perform a Flying Star audit. The information is clear, concise, and very well written and illustrated.

Book Description

Feng Shui Demystified Ï, A Comprehensive Course on Flying Star Feng Shui and Famous Water Formulae, contains all there is to know about the Flying Star system of authentic Chinese Feng Shui. Unlike many other publications this book deals with the authentic and most advanced system of traditional Chinese Feng Shui, which allows you to analyze the energies of your home or workplace and explains how to harmonize them to make sure nature's benevolent forces, which support expansion and growth, are on your side. Critically and expertly presented the author analyzed the methods of different schools and explained all formulae in detail for the reader to understand how they work. This includes the use of color in Feng Shui, the "Host / Guest" relationship of energies, the "Seven Star Robbery", the "Fan Fu Yin", the "Castle Gates " the famous "Five Ghosts carry Money" and the eight "Dragon Gate" water formulae and much more. The water formula of "Perfect Heavenly Harmony" and the "Heavenly Doctor" water formula are published here for the very first time. A special chapter on the change of periods explains how the different traditions, having different concepts on the time factor, deal with it.

4 out of 5 stars Best book in Fengshui details........2005-11-26

The books FS Demystified I and II are for intermediate/advanced levels. They are used as reference book.
It shows water placement,
replacement stars, and a lot of things...This info is very hard to find anywhere. The important thing of the books are that they make more sense from FS.
If anyone is seriously interested in FS, I highly recommend the best list of books that you must have as follows. From (basic/intermediate), intermediate to advanced level.
1- The complete Idiot of FS - Elizabeth Moran, buy 2nd edition not the 3rd edition. Do not read the 4th pillar section,it is very hard to follow. Read 'Four Pillar and Oriental medicine'
2- Flying star FS - Stephen Skinner
3- FS Demystified I and II - Ulrich Wilhelm Lippelt
4- Flying Star FS made easy - This book is excellent if you already know most of FS. It summarizes Flying star
techniques. Likely, you will need this book to apply Flying Star
Supplemental book: Four Pillar and Oriental medicine.

You don't make mistake with the above book.

5 out of 5 stars Feng Shui Demystified II: A Must Have!.......2005-08-03

Please see my review on "Feng Shui Demystified", the first book by Mr. Lippelt. As high as my praise may have been originally, I am now convinced as to Mr. Lippelt's fantastic knowledge of Classical Feng Shui. Upon reading this second book and finally trying to read between the lines, I realized how logic and a full grasp of the basics as presented in both works are paramount in applying the formulae he has presented. This second work reiterates many of the things presented in the previous work, but in such a fashion as to see the material with new eyes. But, this is not to infer that the second work is but a rehash of the first. Far from it. It is a presentation that now offers not only greater depth of previously discussed concepts but now presents the reader/student with a workable knowledge of difficult topics such as the Water Formulas generally not mentioned in detail in other books or course work. These water methods, along with the discussion of how to read the energies of a palace, and the Host/Guest Relationship of energies make this work worth the purchase. As they say though, it does not stop there. I feel these two books are priceless and both are neccessary to better understand Feng Shui in a Classical sense.

Mr. Lippelt above all presents other approaches of Feng Shui as practiced by differing schools but not in a diminishing light. What is asked of the reader is for him or her to think for themselves concerning issues that may seem far differing in approach to a particular issue. With a grasp of the correct basics, a time and place for different approaches may each find their merit when the right situation is at hand for their use. To convey this to the reader is quite rare in that most authors prefer their particular posture on a subject as the most correct. Again, what is neccessary is a discerning mind willing to view a topic from more than one angle. I hope that you will read these works and enjoy the knowlege presented by Mr. Lippelt.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review by CK Cheng, Singapore.......2006-11-23

As Mr Lippelt stated clearly, he assumes the readers have prior understanding of Flying Stars before they find his book(s) useful.

It is true.

Mr Lippelt leaves no stones unturned as he discusses Flying Star Feng Shui and pose several critical questions that will set the readers thinking and challenge their understanding of Flying Stars.

For example, he posed the wicked questions and attempts to provide answers based on logical reasoning. Some good examples are

i)possible interactions among the stars in a palace
ii)strength of stars (the basis or does or does it matters?)
iii)Changing age of a building

While some answers may be curt and abrupt, Mr Lippelt has in fact help many readers by asking the right questions.

However, the details regarding the 'Eight Mansions' are scant and users who wish to answer the burning question of how 'Eight Mansions' and 'Flying Stars' may work together or contradict may be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Non sequitur review by Prinya.......2004-07-29

This book lives up to its title: It is a Comparative Compendium.

Definition of Compendium:

1. A short, complete summary; an abstract.
2. A list or collection of various items.

No, this book will not teach you the basics of Flying Star Feng Shui. It was never the premise to begin with, and is clearly stated in the preface:

"This book is not meant to be anything from which one could learn classical flying star feng shui, but it is an attempt to compare different methods used and taught by different classical schools and to investigate their common background."

For intro. material, I highly recommend The Complete Idiot's Guide to Feng Shui, 2nd Edition by Elizabeth Moran and Master Joseph Yu, Flying Star Feng Shui by Stephen Skinner, and A Master Course in Feng Shui by Eva Wong. Supplement your knowledge of Trigrams by learning about the I Ching through such books as The Complete Idiot's Guide to I Ching by Elizabeth Moran and Master Joseph Yu and Chinese Astrology by Derek Walters.

If you've already bought this book, and you're serious about Feng Shui, keep it! If you haven't bought it yet, put it on your Amazon Wishlist. IMHO you'll be wanting it soon enough!

1 out of 5 stars lack of deep information.......2004-05-28

The book omits lots of important information such as how to construct the flying star chart. I would not recommend it for the beginner in feng shui.

5 out of 5 stars Feng Shui Demystified Reveiw.......2003-08-01

Of all the hundreds of mass-market books available on Feng Shui, only a select few deal with Classical Feng Shui, specifically Xuan Kong Flying Stars. Authors that come to mind are Eva Wong, Joseph Yu, Larry Sang, and David Twicken. Now I must add Ulrich Wilhelm Lippelt to the list who has authored a classical work with a most needed advantage. This book is not about learning a particular style of CFS, because a background in Flying Stars is neccessary. Mr. Lippelt compares the varying styles and systems of CFS and brings the reader to a point of understanding not just the hows but the whys of the processes at work needed to bring about specific results from certain Feng Shui Formulas, no mean feat, to say the least.
For example, there are varying methods concerning the timeliness of the stars, their meaning and interpretations. One school advocates the involvement of the Earth Base star along with the Mountain and Facing Star in determining the energy values of a home while another school primarily concerns itself with just the Mountain and Facing stars. Readers familiar with both approaches might have found the differences between the two approaches disconcerting. Fortunately, the author's experience and knowledge become evident in his comparisons of the methods. I no longer felt the confusion I had held for so long, but felt I gained a better insight as to just how these differing approaches worked. Now knowledgable choices could be made. Contradiction was replaced with understanding.
The author openly explains many concepts that heretofore were held secret for lack of a better word. Among the topics so well explained are Castle Gate, Replacement Stars, and Water Formula of the Two Heavens. Most importantly, not just what these concepts are but how to apply them. The list goes on.
In summary, even if you do not have a firm grasp of Classical Feng Shui, get the book anyway. When you do understand the basics, certain question are bound to arise. This book should save you time in clearing up confusions that could linger unneccessarily.

4 out of 5 stars Lillian Too's Flying Star: Feng Shui for the Master Pratict.......2004-05-02

I disagree with most of the reviews here. I am a huge fan of Ms. Too's and have no doubt this author knows her stuff! (by the way she graduated from Harvard Business school - very smart lady) This book is perfect for those interested in extending their skill levels in flying star feng shui. I found it most helpful and saw no contradictions from previous books. I would caution those without a good grasp of basic flying star or compass school feng shui not to purchase this book until they are "ready". It can be confusing for those who haven't studied this science extensively.

4 out of 5 stars Sitting or Facing?.......2003-11-19

I think this book is well written and gives good explanations of the complicated astrology/numerology aspects of Feng Shui. But part of it seems to contradict Ms. Too's earlier book, The Complete Illustrated Guide to Feng Shui (1996). In that one, the facing direction of the back door determines good and bad areas (the eight locations). A house with back door facing NW is a West-group Chien house with its good and bad areas matching those of West-group people. But in this newer book the facing direction of the front door is used and a SE-facing house is labelled "West-group" but its good and bad areas match those of East-group people (see page 184). I feel very frustrated because I thought I understood this -- but now, not. I wonder if it's a mistake, because I've found mistakes in other books by this author, specifically in the drawings and diagrams. In The Complete Illustrated guide, I think the diagram on page 96 has mixed up "good" and "bad" locations, they conflict with the text. In Smart Feng Shui for the Home, the East trigram on yang pa kua is wrong (page 31). In the new book Flying Star Feng Shui for Period 8, the mountain and water star numbers are switched in the NW sector (page 67). The books are fascinating to me and have lots of information. I feel they need to be more careful in the proofreading stage.

1 out of 5 stars Borrowed ideas.......2003-02-22

Not quite what I have expected. She should stick to what she writes best - all about superstitions and buying feng shui stuffs. Classical feng shui are for the classical feng shui writers. Would rather read Eva Wong's books. I think she got most of the originals from other classical feng shui writers. It's disgraceful!

1 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed.......2003-01-31

I admire Lillian Too's writing skills and I'm glad she finnaly starts writing the more serious feng shui stuff.

I have great interest in learning classical feng shui and I have collected the works of other well known and authoritative classical feng shui teachers. But most these books are advanced and may too complicated for a beginner. Ms Lillian Too has been able to borrow and extract the formulae out of these authors and cleverly rearranged them in her own abridged style.

A good book must always have an acknowledgement of the author's original source of reference. Unfortunately, Ms Lillian Too has not shared with us her sources of reference and has not given due credit to those authors from which her information for this book is derived. I'm sure there are many eager learners like me out there who would like to for more substance by buying not just her books but also others who created the originals.

4 out of 5 stars Something Different from Lillian Too.......2003-01-16

For those who are used to Lillian Toos Feng Shui books, this will come as something as a shock. With great respect to Lillian, her books to date are very "pop culture" just dusting the top of the simplest Feng Shui for the mass market.

This is vastly different and shows she really does know her stuff! In depth detail of Flying Star and Eight Mansions with details on loss lines, Castle Gates, the Luo Pan rings and more. However, this would be for the more advanced reader as it really assumes you are familiar with the concepts of qi, five elements etc.

I am not an expert, but it is definitely what is known as "Classical Feng Shui". I can't vouch for her interpretation of Flying Star, but I am happy to add it to my collection!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-30

I have been studying Classical Feng Shui for a while, and some subjects I found hard to understand as the translations of certain formulas from Chinese were hard to understand, but this book had simplified the formulas so much and made it so much easier to understand. However, non- students of Classical FS will find it hard to understand without some sort of background.

3 out of 5 stars EASY... NOT SO..........2005-08-26

Every books title is there like the baited hook to catch the reader fish. "Easy" is the bait used her and it soon wears thin. If you have no knowledge of Flying Star this book will not really help except to get you running to the bookstore to find one(s)that do. Secondly, if you were hoping for some easy step-by-step instruction book..you ain't really gonna find it here.

The book is like a paperback manual or pocket compendium of Short List of Flyer Star Feng Shui "things to know". In the start of the book you are introduced to elements, cycle, Qi...Yin/Yang and so forth. The author uses a "family" tree scheme..mother, father, oldest, youngest, elders..etc to explain the elements. Gives a brief background information on four branches of traditional Feng Shui and names of founders/ contributors to classical Feng Shui. So far, so good right..wrong. Despite its good points of diagrams, variety, and what seems like little gems of information..the problem is that this book is rather more like a showcase. Different applications Flying Star Feng Shui trying to pass off as indepth or magically demystifying book. A smorgesbord menu with scanty "how to" feel.

This book STARTS off easy enough then just seems to gradually become complicated in part due to its disconnectedness of chapters that serves to further confuse. Also the "remedies" are very short lived, sometimes irrelevently unappliable.

Its an interesting book because its so all over the place you think that you might be onto something. However, this book is NOT going to help the newbie or "get me there fast" Feng Shui person out the unenchanted forest of Feng Shui...(more like into it!)

The book's worth is devalued by trying to be too much to everyone or too much of all of Flying Star Feng Shui instead of just presenting one platform and doing well with it. At best this book might serve as some kind of adjunct or back up for those who have more working knowledge of Flying Star Feng Shui.

Theres are two old saying that applies here "Too many cooks spoil the broth"..."Easy come..Easy go".

4 out of 5 stars Good info if you have the background.......2004-07-10

I felt compelled to add this review after seeing the book get five stars and one star and no review really providing a fair summary. This book is fairly advanced and has alot of great information in it and as someone states elsewhere is the only place where you can find information on the water placement that is in english. But this book is brief on explanations. Without some prior background readers will have a tough time figuring it out. But if you first read a book which provides a sound basis in nine flying star such as eva wong's book "a master's course in feng shui", or lillian too's book "nine flying star feng shui", or the complete idiot's guide, then you can read this book and put it to good use.

5 out of 5 stars Concise yet fully covers.......2003-09-12

This book is an ultimate manual for flying star feng shui practitioners. It is concise and explains only things necessary for practicing flying star feng shui. I am always carrying this book whenever I visit my clients. I am definitely recommending this excellent manual to every flying star practioner.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2003-04-13

Finally a book on classical Feng Shui that includes advance knowledge, in addition to a comphrehensive Flying Stars system, this is the only book I have seen that includes the following classic Water Dragon methods:

Ling Shen
Zhao Shen
He Tu Castle Gate
Castle Gate
Water and Mountain Fan Gua
Fan Gua Five Ghosts Carry Money
Peach Blossom

Save yourself hundreds or thousands of dollars attending workshops to get some of this information; for $14.95 it is the bargain of the century.

Thank you Mr. Twicken for revealing this important Feng Shui knowledge, I have studied with people for years and never got this information.

    Book Description

Feng Shui is the path of life!

The following metaphor may help illustrate the point: A Mercedes Benz driver takes a ride on a bumpy road and a Nissan Sunny driver drives along a smooth highway. Which driver would find the journey most enjoyable? You might surmise that the Nissan driver would enjoy the smooth road more. Yet, the answer could be both, because the discomfort of the bumpy road could be offset by the comfort provided by the luxurious Mercedes. Nonetheless, at the end of the journey, the Mercedes will remain as a Mercedes and the Nissan will still be a Nissan.

One sure thing is that correctly applying Feng Shui principles to your life makes your path easier or smoother. We will get to our destination much sooner and with less distraction or deviance from our life path. Moreover, the Yin and Yang theories remind us that change is constant and it is thus worthwhile to keep that in mind as we pursue our daily life activities.

    The Power of Feng Shui!

It is viewed as environmental studies that harness the best possible 'kind' energies and avoid the 'unkind' energies at the right time, at the right place for the right person. Product Description

As one of the simplest and most practical approaches to Feng Shui, Flying Stars are used to access the Feng Shui of a building's interior. A Flying Stars Chart is pretty much akin to an astrological or natal (birth)chart of a property, which indicates the building's Feng Shui potential, strengths and of course, flaws. What's more, advanced knowledge of Flying Stars actually empowers practitioners to predict events that are bound to happen to a property's occupants, in the future! As a specific, goal-oriented system, Flying Stars can also reveal 'hidden' information and details- such as the character, health, wealth and relationship prospects - of the occupants of a household, without them having to divulge these details to the practitioners, first! Begin your journey into the intriguing world of Xuan Kong Flying Stars ... with Joey Yap's Xuan Kong Flying Stars Fng Shui!

    5 out of 5 stars Good job.......2007-10-02

I think the author did a good job explaining the intricacies of flying stars. Some of the techniques can be confusing and many of the books out there seem contradictory. I was just about to give up on the subject until I picked up this book.

I really enjoyed the chapter on taking a direction and applying flying stars to apartment units. Instructions were clear and systematic.

I also liked the practical chapter where he discussed case studies. This really helped with my understanding. The step by step guide at the end was great too.

5 out of 5 stars The only book on flying star you should ever read.......2007-09-27

I have read quite a few books on flying stars feng shui but nothing explains the subject quite so clearly. I have already tried to apply what I learnt from the book and it is so much easier. I often get confused working on stuff I learnt from other books. Chapter 7 on Applications of Flying Stars was so useful. Joey breaks it down for you in such a systematic way. Plus- the diagrams and pictures in the book are beautiful!

    5 out of 5 stars amazing!.......2007-09-24

This book is amazing! It has brought my understanding of flying star feng shui to a whole new level. I've read several other books on the subject, but none were as descriptive or as systematic as this. If you were similarly as confused as I was on this subject in the beginning, you should definitely get this book!

5 out of 5 stars The BEST book I have ever read on Flying Stars Feng Shui.......2007-09-12

This is by far the best book I have ever read on Flying Stars Feng Shui. Joey Yap does an excellent job of breaking down this sophisticated art and making it both fun and easy to understand. I tried some of the techniques in the book already and have already seen some results. I never got this kind of success with other Feng Shui books. I have been studying Flying Stars Feng Shui for the last 3 years through books and websites. It is quite a difficult subject to learn and even harder to apply. Thank you Joey! I think I might just attend one of his seminars now.

Here are some of my favourite chapters:

Chapter 4 on Tools and Tricks of the Trade was insightful. It cleared up a lot of my questions on where to take a direction, which is the true facing of a property and more.

Chapter 6 on Understanding the Nine Stars was really good. I did not realise that the knowledge goes so deep.

Chapter 8 on the Practical Application of Xuan Kong Flying Stars helped tie everything together!

The illustrations are even better than his other books if that is possible. Not just eye candy, they helped illustrate the ideas in the book and kept me going to the last page.

This is his 5th book on Feng Shui. Joey Yap Stories and Lessons on Feng Shui and More Stories And Lessons on Feng Shui were great reads, filled with essays, thoughts and articles. Feng Shui For Homebuyers - Exterior and Feng Shui For Homebuyers - Interior were great "show and tell" for the beginner or casual reading. But Xuan Kong Flying Stars Feng Shui is his first serious, instructional manual. Very very good.
