Excellent for Coaches and Managers.......2007-08-15
Not only a succinct guide for improvement in itself, many references to detailed research on improvement of individual traits.
My Team members each have a copy. Works well with 360 degree review approach.
Hits the mark on a lot of topics.......2007-06-14
A very good overall guide for self discovery, and a great tool for coaching and developing others - a great leadership resource. This touches at a high level a lot of behavior and development topics, but does not get into the details. If you're looking for a book that dives deep into a specific behaviorial area, this is not the book for you. But what it gives is 3-4 pages on a behavior or skill, hitting it fast and hard, with guides and advise on development (covers overuse of a skill, as well as adressing gaps in a skill). It links topics/bahaviors to each other which is very helpful, and the book even leaves space in its categorizing/numbering for future skills and behaviors that may come in future editions. I've purchased this book for all the managers on my team.
A must have for all leaders.......2005-10-06
Updated for the current workforce with new tips and strategies.

Mentor Manager, Mentor Parent.......2004-07-18
Overall, the book is an easy, good read for anyone interested in improving their communication skills and relationships in general, both at home and in the work place. The authors provide a revealing self-test at the start of the book as well as worksheets throughout. (Hint, hold onto your answers from the self-test as you will use them throughout the other chapters in the book)!
The authors describe four control styles or personality types. Don't be surprised if your style at home and at work differ. Once you know your style, you can glean the advice and suggestions that apply to you personally. The book does not speak condescendingly to any particular group, in fact, it is as the title suggests, in mentors and encourages and even provides worksheets for practice (pssst....no one has to see your worksheets but you)!
It will help to reveal your strengths and weaknesses and better equip you to resolve conflict both on a personal and professional level. Of course, taking into consideration the emotions and values of both parties involved in the communication process. Whether intended or not, it seems as though the underlying principle involved is the value of each person as an individual, their beliefs and their emotions. We have no control over the emotions as they arise, but we do to some degree have control as to how we deal with them and how we deal with our emotions affects others.
Although the authors coin the term "control style," the book does not promote controlling behavior in a negative sense. Rather, it promotes a mentoring behavior that preserves the relationship, nurturing the relationship and the individual.
The book takes you from the place of identifying your values and relating them to the child or employee. Once that has been established, you eventually work up to the point of letting go. The passing of ownership of choices, decisions and responsiblity of actions to the child or employee, whatever the case may be. That is the goal of the book, to produce responsible, self-directed persons while preserving your relationship in the process.
Overall, I liked the book and the motivational style in which it was written. If I had any dislikes, it would have been some of the real life scenario's and the seemingly perfect endings. One begins to think, this is too good to be true. But those thoughts are quickly diminished as you read further along in the book to find that not every scenario is a win-win.
I would recommend this book for personal and professional use. It is not often you find a book with universal principles that can be applied to all aspects of your life.
Great book!.......2002-10-10
Combines management tips with proven parenting advice that I can use at home and at work.

According to consultant and trainer Chip R. Bell, mentoring is a highly synergistic, two-way performance that, when properly engaged, takes on the synchronized qualities of a well-executed dance. In Managers As Mentors: Building Partnerships for Learning, he explains what mentoring is (and is not) and provides a way for readers to assess their own attributes for the practice. Subsequent information--designed to be personalized and read in any order--deals with such specifics as giving advice properly, gaining protege acceptance, lessening the fear factor, and finding time to commit to the process.
Book Description
In today's workplace, where skills and knowledge can become obsolete overnight, the ability to mentor is key to attracting and keeping the best talent. In Managers as Mentors, Chip Bell shows how to become a trusted and valued mentor to business associates. His approach is crafted around the mnemonic "SAGE" -- surrendering, accepting, gifting, and extending.
A hands-on guide that takes the mystery out of effective mentoring, this book helps managers establish trust, create a safe haven for risk taking, give feedback and support, and ensure the transfer of knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
Has applicability beyond traditional mentoring........2005-02-08
While this book is targeted primarily toward mentor - protoge relationships (which it addresses well), it has much broader applicability. Many of the ideas discussed can be used in both sales and consulting situations. In fact, it provides guidance in how to approach any relationship where learning, growth, reciprocity, and mutual respect are important. A practical and good read!
A great introduction for managers and mentors.......2002-10-12
The author of Managers as Mentors intorduces how relationships between two people can be a learning and growth experience in any environment. The topic of mentoring is a huge issue in the business environment and I have found that this book offers basic keys of advise to the executives of large organizations. Bell shares practical experiences and guidance in short easy to read chapters, while getting away from the typical referance book material.
Self-assesments, tools, and communication tatics are just a few of the practical ways that are offered in this book. Often times I found that Mr. Bell cites other authors and practices. I believe that these methods are a wonderful way to bring multiple factors to a single situation and base those experiences on resolving the matter at hand.
I recommend this guide to anyone that wishes to begin a healthy relationship of mentoring. It really brings the basics to focus and prepares you for further knowledge in this field.
Mentoring for Mentors.......2002-03-06
Chip Bell has the magic touch when advising managers. In his 2nd edition, he has provided helpful self-assessments that point the manager/mentor toward development needs for the purpose of being the best that you can be as mentor. He paints a verbal landscape that includes insightful adages from Socrates to the Little Prince. The short chapters and direct, pithy style make for quick reading episodes over time--minimum effort with maximum gain. And, last but certainly not least, his quotable language will give you turns of phrase to use in your own communications and presentations. Yet another star in Chip's gallery!
Solid, solid, solid. Absolute must read........2002-01-18
Mentoring is such a "hot" topic these days, I was concerned that this was going to be another one of those fluffy books that don't give you specific actions. How wrong I was! Each page is jammed full of pratical how-to's supported by both the concept behind the how-to and examples of it at work.
Mentoring is a popular topic because it's so valuable in today's organization and this book is an absolute must read for anyone in a leadership position. Within days of putting what I learned to work, my team started responding. I also found that the techniques work well in my volunteer work with the local humane society.
Buy this book today and read it right away.
Mentoring is the secret to effective leadership........2002-01-04
In my leadership development work with top executives around the world, I have found one thing that separates the "best of the best" from others is their dedication to growing a new generation of leaders. I have long recommended Managers as Mentors as the guide book for leaders who wish to leave a real lasting legacy, and the 2nd edition offers even more than did the first. I particularly like the new chapters that address mentoring from the perspective of the protege' because they help ensure that the relationship formed is a true partnership. While the final chapter - Arduous Alliances - begins to address the difficult task of maintaining a mentoring relationship in today's fast-paced business environment, I left hungry for more help in this area. Overall, though, Chip has another winner here and I will make the 2nd edition a "must read" for my "best of the best" leader clients.
Book Description
The #1 reason cited in exit interviews for an employee quitting is "my manager." Most managers and executives not only aren't aware of this obvious problem, but probably wouldn't know what to do about it if they did.
Today's employees do not respond to the old hands-on, militaristic management styles. They are highly independent, individual professionals with their own fully developed ideas. Leaders and managers who try to micro-manage them will inevitably confront wide-spread disgruntlement, absenteeism, and turnover...and increase their own and their employees' stress levels.
In The Hands-Off Manager, Chandler and Black offer a new vision for all managers. With stories, examples, and vibrant activities for the reader to practice, this book shows any manager--new or seasoned--how to coach and mentor employees rather than hover over their shoulders and goad them into action.
In this system, each employee's strengths are honored and honed in a climate of partnership and mutual goal-setting. Chandler, whose 100 Ways to Motivate Others is a best-selling favorite with small and large businesses alike, has called The Hands-Off Manager "my most original work to date" because it finally solves the age-old problem of getting the best performance out of people without frustrating yourself and them.
The Hands-Off Manager and its breakthrough content will take its place beside In Search of Excellence, The One Minute Manager, and Who Moved My Cheese? as an instant classic that will forever change the way we lead and manage.
Customer Reviews:
Good points, a bit too soft & sweet in presentation........2007-08-14
Managing the folks in today's workforce is very different than it was a few decades back. They usually don't take well to rigidity, conformity, or being told anything. Steve Chandler and Duane Black believe there is a great way to manage them and to improve their life and yours. They call it hands-off managing. That is, you don't try to control them by turning and pushing them (metaphorically) in a specific direction. What they believe is that you should spend more time helping your employees understand who they are as people and why they can use their work to help them express that unique self they have to contribute. Sounds a bit squishy? Yeah, me too. However, there really is a solid core behind the kind of soft metaphors they use to express it.
Much of the book is focused on getting you to treat yourself this way. The idea is to lower your stress levels by not forcing yourself to be a certain way, don't worry so much about overcoming and willing things into existence. Rather, relax and find your own core and your true gifts and then you will be ready to lead others this way. Several times they say (probably too many times) that the best gift you can give another is the gift of them self.
The book is full of anecdotes from their own coaching experiences to illustrate their points. They also use quotes from the likes of Deepak Chopra (this always raises my concerns about the point being made), Napoleon Hill (whom they also bash for using the work think), Voltaire (!), and many others. They also make some really odd comments. One being that DeNiro was channeling a dead boxer in "Raging Bull". Hmmm. Jake LaMotta was not only alive when the film was made (he was born in 1921), he is alive in 2007.
While I quite enjoy their point about the new work force, not trying to force things so much, focusing only on the present and the one most important task, I found the packaging of the ideas a tad saccharine. It is up to you whether you will find it appealing.
It works in more scenarios than just the business world. .......2007-07-17
I have experienced this type of success when leading volunteer groups but haven't been able to define the formula until reading this book. When people volunteer, you can't fire them. If you lose them you have to do all the work yourself! You have to figure out a way to use what they have to offer. The principles in this book work!
Low-Stress, Humanistic Management That Works.......2007-07-07
The Hands-Off Manager's chapter headings include uncomplicated titles such as "Using the Power of Neutral" (Chapter 3) and "Letting Go of Judgment" (Chapter 11), but this book is far from simplistic. I began reading with the thought that I would skim the book in an hour or two. I soon found that there are truths here that deserve a slow, careful read.
The book's writers, consultant and author Steve Chandler and construction executive Duane Black, have outlined a plan for transforming a company's culture from one of judgment and criticism to one of leading employees to contribute more than any goal or KPI will motivate them to achieve. The book makes a logical, persuasive case for managing people in a way that gets them thinking about how they can contribute to the success of the company, and in doing so, make work fun and rewarding. It teaches managers how to create constructive relationships with their employees, and in doing so, significantly reduce their own stress levels.
In my work as a corporate trainer, I began incorporating principles from the book into several training courses a few months ago. The effect the book has on each group of managers is the same. They recognize the truths contained in the book, see how applying them will reduce stress and make them more effective leaders, and ask for more training based on the principles in the book.
Read this book with thought and care, and you'll change the way you think about management and leadership.
The Hands-Off Manager.......2007-07-05
Great Book! I give this 5 stars. There are few people in life and business that look within and do their own internal work. There are a lot of teachers in the world that have helpful information. Then there are those few teachers that consistently look inside themselves and these are the true leaders of our world.
Duane Black is one of those leaders that is consistently walking his talk. As a successful small business owner for more than 20 years, I have recently found myself holding the position of manager of a small group of entrepreneurs. Duane Black and Steve Chandler's ability to take all different types of information and philosophies and bring them back to personal responsibility has been done with grace.
We are all observers of the people around us. A great manager is one that is observing himself and is by doing so, much more effective in assisting others in empowering themselves.
Great reading!

Everyone Needs A Good MENTOR!!.......2006-03-31
Jeff Lehman's second edition and easy-to-read book opens with a wonderful piece of sage advice: "Your manager is either your mentor or tormentor. If they aren't working for you, they are working against you." The vast majority of sales "how-to" books are focused only on the sales process, itself. Jeff's book is specifically addressed to the sales manager [both new and seasoned]. There are a whopping 320+ practical career-advancing tips and real life insights on true sales leadership. The overall format is excellent with "mega tips," "top tips," and "true stories" covering 18 major areas of sales management. Included are such salient topics as recruiting, sales training, motivation, managing yourself and [even!] the highly practical reality of how to work for that bad CEO. A reader-friendly "tip index" is conveniently found at the back of the book. Jeff Lehman's second edition is another major contribution to those rare tools so vital for successful sales management. As an experienced corporate sales/marketing manager [25+ years of field experience], I am pleased to use Jeff Lehman's books as part of required reading in my various sales courses at a major university. This paperback version is a welcome enhancement to MENTOR'S availability.

understanding myself.......2007-05-01
After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.
A practical resource for better living.......2006-03-27
For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.
The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.
With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.
Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.
I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.
This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.
Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble.......2006-02-25
James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."
His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!
My Review of a Great Book.......2006-02-23
"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.
I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.
The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.
Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.
To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

Book Description
Mentoring is an age-old practice, tracing its roots in ancient Greek folklore to Odysseus' friend, Mentor, whom the Homeric hero entrusted as guide to his son's development. Today, with the ascendance of the "knowledge age" and the transformation of the workplace into an environment of continual learning, mentoring has emerged as one of the most important and valuable roles a manager can perform. By serving as a role model, providing feedback, nurturing talent, inspiring individual development, and facilitating excellence, a manager's mentoring strengthens relationships within the organization, and ultimately contributes to such critical factors as improved job performance, low turnover, and greater profitability. Mentoring is not an easy skill to attain, however, and many managers who may excel at leading teams or coordinating projects may be disasters as mentors. The Manager as Mentor explores emerging trends and approaches to help managers master the skills of effective mentoring--and enhance themselves, their proteges, and their organizations in the process. Drawing from extensive research, dozens of examples, and their own practical application in training managers around the world, the authors argue that exceptional mentoring skills can be developed. They guide the reader toward understanding the key roles that mentors play and the activities and techniques they can employ for maximum impact. Diagnostic exercises will help readers assess their strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for development, and create a step-by-step action plan for achieving goals--either individually or in groups. The authors also offer an extensive listing of resources for more in-depth information on various aspects of mentoring, such as problem solving, active listening, and employee advocacy. Ultimately, The Manager as Mentor offers the tools by which managers can promote learning, empowerment, and insight to create vibrant organizational cultures.

HIGHLY IN-DEPTH AND PACKED WITH VALUE........2006-05-27
Starting with the assertion that probably the most important role a manager can perform is to mentor and inspire people to learn, the book addresses the development of mentoring competencies. Through discussion, guidelines, self-assessment questionnaires, tips, exercises, and profiles, the authors provide a highly in-depth book that is packed with value.
Included in this work, as an example of its value, is a chapter on developing an action plan and identifying strategies for becoming a manager, offering numerous tools and resources, such as: mentor-mentee agreement; monitoring the quality of mentor-mentee interactions, and tips on providing feedback. The book is an extremely rich, useful source of information and guidance. Very highly recommended. 191 pp.

Avoid business pitfalls by reading this book first!.......2007-06-25
Whether just starting out or having been in business for years, Manager's Mentor is excellent, easy-reading material to help insure a business runs smoothly and on a profitable course. I enjoyed the author's practical advice and the delightful way he was able to deliver his ideas enhanced through his own childhood life lessons and extensive business experiences and research. This book is definitely a starting point for the serious-minded individual wanting to avoid major pitfalls when starting up and running a business. It is very informative. I felt like I gained more useable information from Manager's Mentor than I have from all the other business books I own. Definitely worth keeping as a reference.
Manager's Mentor is a must for the small business owner!!.......2007-03-19
This is a book that is entertaining and educational for the small business owner as well as immediately useful. It is entertaining because the book is written in a straightforward and graceful manner for those of us who don't care to dig through a bunch of business jargon. The book is educational because it presents a focus on real small business management issues using the owners past experiences and not "hypothetical" problems. And it is useful because the material in the book can be incorporated into a business easily. The chapters cover the problems a small business owner will face such as setting company culture, efficiency, creating and managing a workforce, taking care of employees, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed the book!
Should be on the shelf of every entrepreneur!.......2007-01-31
I own 100's of business books -- I buy anything I can get my hands on about running a small business. This book is by far the easiest read, as well as the most comprehensive book I've got, and I refer to it regularly. It's actually fun to read -- there are analogies and stories that bring the points home. If you are starting a small business with the goal of making money and keeping control, read this book now.
