5 out of 5 stars EARNS a place on YOUR desk...not the shelf!.......2007-05-23

As a trainer, Six Sigma Black Belt, Certified Performance Technologist, and Sr. manager for a leading BioTech firm whose job is to help my site adopt the tools, concepts and methods of HPT, Lean, Six Sigma, I use this reference all the time. Taking a "fieldbook" approach much like Peter Senge's FIFTH DISCIPLINE and DANCE OF CHANGE fieldbooks, the HANDBOOK FOR HUMAN PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGY is THE "bible" in our field. Full of real world advice, insights, and helpful models and examples, don't miss your chance to have the best reference around in your toolkit.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" reference for improving workplace performance!!!.......2007-01-07

Like its previous editions, the third edition of the Handbook of Human Performance Technology is a "must have" reference for all performance improvement professionals and those seeking to systematically and systemically identify and remove barriers to individual and organizational performance. Unlike many books on the subject that offer the views of an individual or small group of authors, the Handbook's fifty-five articles give the reader an opportunity to learn from the diverse experience of some of the best practitioners and academicians in the field.

4 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive and Practical Reference for the Practioner.......2005-09-23

The size and weight of this book caused me to think twice because the combination of those features often suggest more than a fair amount of techno speak, often more satisfying for the writer than the reader. The weight of this book is pure muscle, written for the user...clear, understandable and comprehensive. If you are interested in global organizational performance, I found the treatment of the subject very useful and well done. As it turns out, the weight of the book has a complimentary benefit i.e. eliminating at least one trip to the gym, I can now build both strength and knowledge without having to take a gym shower. It may not be a benefit for everyone, but the Handbook for HTP will provide value for those who are serious about this subject....

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2003-01-07

This book has been an excellent desk reference. It is a must for anyone working or studying in the field of performance technology.

5 out of 5 stars Just what is says: a complete and state-of-the-art handbook.......1999-09-10

We humans are most important. Not only to ourselves, but increasingly to economy. More and more humans become alive within the business they work in. And businesses become more and more knowledge critical, which enhances the importance of humans and their performance. This means that addressing issues on human performance becomes increasingly complex and daunting. Hence: Human Performance Technology. This handbook is both scientific and realistic. It takes the need for metrics as much into account as the 'softer' aspects. It approaches HP from a General Systems Theory approach and does is coherent. Everyone that wants to know where we stand, where we are going, will love it for its scientific and academic value alone. But those who want to put HPT in practice at strategical, tactical and/or oprational level will both love and need it. If you are serious about HP you will find this handbook is worth every cent.

    Book Description

Human Performance Measures Handbook was developed to help researchers and practitioners select measures to be used in the evaluation of human/machine systems and helps them seek better, more efficient and effective ways to characterize and measure the human element as part of the system. This book guides the reader through the critical process of selecting the appropriate measures of human performance and workload, and later provides specific examples of such. It begins with an overview of the steps involved in developing a test to measure human performance, workload, and/or situational awareness. This is followed by a definition of human performance and a review of human performance measures. Workload and situational awareness are similarly treated in subsequent chapters.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2004-10-17

This handbook provides an extremely comprehensive review of hundreds of measures. Each review has a general description, strengths and limitations based on data, data collection requirements, thresholds of critical values that have been empirically tested, and references. Hundreds of reports and articles are referenced. The document has brevity, clarity, and integrity. There is no author's conjecture.

2 out of 5 stars More of an Information Flea Market than a Handbook.......2003-11-25

This book was written to fill a definite need for applied human factors practitioners. Unfortunately, the frustrations outweigh the benefits. It does catalogue a number of measures, but fails to succeed in its aim. The text reads more like a stack of literature review notecards than a handbook or guide. At times, it hands out results without talking about what a given researcher was measuring or addressing. It is almost as if they published an expanded draft outline instead of the real book it was supposed to grow into.

It's title clearly states that it addresses Human Performance Measures. Liberally splashed in amongst the measures, however, are entry after entry of experimental tasks that present vague task results without talking about the measures used to determine those results. It does so without pointing out that these items are tasks, not measures. When it does address true measures, it offers no explanation of when that type of measure is appropriate, or even how to use it. Instead, in simple literature review fashion, it simply cites results of different journal articles.

This volume is completely hamstrung by the publisher formatting of the text. When you flip through the book, it appears to be a single, 188-page-long run-on paragraph. Reading a specific section reveals the same problem: headers and subheaders are barely (if at all) distinguishable from the text, which is of low to moderate value anyways.

It is a perfect example of an information flea market - There are a very few good bits of information in there, but you have to spend a whole lot of time digging around to find it. The topic was a great idea, but the execution was lacking. It just takes too much digging time for the potential payoff.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Covers all the basics.......2004-12-08

This book is highly useful for anyone trying to get an exact sense of how the training industry views itself, its purpose and its standard operating procedures.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-03-12

I finishing my PhD in Cognitive Psychology, and I am new to the field of training. My purpose in reading training books is to discover whether or not I would like to pursue being a trainer, or at the very least use the information to help me in my current field. So, you can take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I know that ASTD is the big professional association for trainers, so I was surprised and disappointed in the limited usefulness of a book sponsored by them.

Other books present design and delivery in a more thorough manner. You can skim this book in a few minutes and get the key points. Whether this is entirely due to the lack of substantive content or due to the book's format is debatable, but I am thinking more the former than the latter.

The key points that are useful are not adequately backed up by sufficient supporting detail or research. I don't think the "Delivery" part should necessarily be backed up by research, but the "Design" part surely should. I would like to know why the techniques they suggest should work and how cognitive processes relate to those techniques. But my thinking that this is important may be more due to my own background, rather than a real flaw of the book. However, even if that is true, I have found other books that do give sufficient supporting detail and/or research.

The other books I recommend instead of this one are:
    - Beyond the Podium by Rossett
    - Developing Training Courses by Hassell-Corbiell
    - Web-Based Training by Horton
    - Multimedia for Learning: Methods and Development by Alessi and Trollip
    - Building Expertise by Clark

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Reference for all Training Preofessionals.......2002-02-10

A quick reference for all things related to Training Design & delivery. However, the coverage is surprisingly deep and some of the chapters are all you'll ever need to know about the topic.

Whether you want an overall picture of Training Design & Delivery or a beginner on his/her first steps and even when you become an expert, you'll find yourself referring to this book again and again.

    The Handbook is divided into three section;
    1) Instructor Based - Covers such topics as instructional systems design, using technology and games during training and evaluating training programs.
    2) Design & delivery of Technology Based Training - If you want a more comprehensive coverage of e-learning, then you should refer to the newly published 'Handbook of e-learning.' However, this section remains quite valuable since it covers some of the other media.
    3) Design & delivery of Self Directed Training - If they will learn on their own, then these are all the resources and tools you will need.

This Handbook, together with the 'ASTD Handbook of Training & Development' are essential reference for all Training & Development professionals. I predict that they will also be joined by the 'ATSD Handbook of e-learning' quite soon!

As more employees work non-routine hours, often in critical safety and security positions, recognizing and reducing stress and the human error it causes is more important than ever. Performance problems caused by unconventional work schedules and resulting fatigue are a significant cause of industrial accidents, lost productivity, and high medical costs. Shiftwork Safety and Performance offers practical solutions to managing fitness and health, improving alertness and sleep quality, and maintaining a social life while performing shiftwork. Sections of this book were required reading for a graduate-level course in HPT I took several years ago. I found myself reading vast portions of this book not because it was required, but because this book is informative and enlightening. Now that I work to help companies re-engineer for the Web, the practices and principles I learned through these readings are more relevant than ever. A great resource! I can't wait to read the follow-up.

4 out of 5 stars Developing a Career Passport for the Future.......2001-03-14

The author's overall goal is to encourage readers to use assessment tools and methods described and illustrated in Creating Productive Organizations to encourage readers to: (1) Develop their personal and professional vision and mission statements; (2) Use a representation work activities model to evaluate their overall competencies based on experience, learning, accumulated skills, abilities, and knowledge; and (3) Create a "personal equation" or career passport to help them more closely and effectively match their overall expertise or talents with the job they perform. This process helps ensure employability.

The interactive, learning-driven materials guide the reader through the basics about organizations, leadership, systems approaches, productivity, and the true nature of work.

The reader creates a diagnostic model by rating (using a 7-point scale) each of six work activities they regularly perform along ten major dimensions, like difficulty level, use of standards, motivating potential ... value-added functions. Results of the 6x10 matrix or grid are used to group work activities into: (1) Core, routine, repetitive work;(2) Unique - areas specific to education, training or certification, like engineer ... accounting, C.P.A., etc., and (3) Expanding - work activities related to professional and personal growth and development in area of expertise having high motivating potential, like being creative. Results provide numeric scores that can be used: (1)to compare people doing similar jobs; (2)in initial job placement (3)job enrichment; (4) measure the effects of training; (5) provide jobs with high motivating potential leading to creativity and innovation.

Writing is concise, examples, charts, tables, and diagrams decribe and illustrate the content. The detailed summaries and practical applications at the end of each chapter are extremely useful.

Overall the book combines theory and real-world events to provide meaningful information about people, the workplace, environment, organization, and technology. It would be useful in graduate M.B.A. programs, in industrial engineering, as a career assessment tool and guide, and independent study resource.
