"Uncle Fred was someone I saw at weddings and funerals and once in a while at Giovichinni's Meat Market, ordering a quarter pound of olive loaf. Eddie Such, the butcher, would have the olive loaf on the scale and Uncle Fred would say, 'You've got the olive loaf on a piece of waxed paper. How much does that piece of waxed paper weigh? You're not gonna charge me for that waxed paper, are you? I want some money off for the waxed paper.'"

The speaker is Stephanie Plum, the glamorous if slightly ditzy bounty hunter from Trenton, New Jersey, and one of the most original creations in recent mystery fiction.

In this fifth entry in Janet Evanovich's increasingly popular series, Stephanie's problems are many and varied. She's not making enough money picking up FTAs (Failures to Appear) for her cousin Vinnie, of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds; her red-hot love affair with Detective Joe Morelli has cooled off; and her giant extended family is no help at all. For instance, Uncle Fred the cheapskate has disappeared, leaving behind some suspicious photographs of body parts in garbage bags and links to some really dangerous people.

When Stephanie turns to her friend and mentor, Ranger, for financial advice, he gets her involved in a gang of toughs doing instant evictions for landlords. (She complains to Ranger about the job and its dangers, prompting one of the hired thug to say, "Man, you don't like to get shot. You don't like to get arrested. You don't know how to have fun at all.")

Most of Stephanie's charm, of course, comes from her attitude--a combination of the brazen bravado that turns a failed lingerie model into a bounty hunter in the first place and the normal fears of a person in over her head.

Other Plums in paperback, by the numbers: One for the Money, Two for the Dough, Three to Get Deadly, and Four to Score. --Dick Adler

5 out of 5 stars Stephanie Plum series.......2007-09-02

I love the Stephanie Plum series of novels. I really hate reading so I purchase them both in audio for me and paperback for houseguests and friends. I'm drawn in with the excitment and adventure of the story that Janet seems to capture in every novel. It has twists, turns, Lula, mystery, wonder, and of course two very "HOT" men! Who wouldn't want a mix of both men. :} I would recommend the "Plum" series, her "Full" series, as well as her earlier novels of mixed titles. They're all great fun and keep you as a reader at the edge of your seat waiting to see if a cars going to get blown up, who's died this week, who attends the pot roast dinner, who she sleeps with next, what will burn down next, and will she get her man (love or bounty). I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. I look forward to #14 in the "Plum" series, the next "Full" novel, and the new novel Janet recently wrote with a new author being released this October. Thank you!

1 out of 5 stars The Language Is Offensive.......2007-08-09

A couple of acquaintances recommended Stephanie Plum and Evanovich to me for humourous reading. It was a waste for me. They are many "fun" books out there with decent language to take up my spare time.

5 out of 5 stars Murder and mayhem.......2007-07-26

"High Five," drops young Trenton, NJ, bounty hunter, Stephanie Plum, into her usual refreshing frenzy of mayhem, disaster, sleuthing and old-neighborhood New Jersey.

This time the disappearance of cheap, crotchety old Uncle Fred nags at Stephanie's attention while her desperate need for money drives her to ask enigmatic, taciturn, mysterious and powerful mentor-colleague Ranger for work. Such as a job of "interior renovation," which involves sweeping drug dealers from their squat at dawn.

Between working for Ranger, taking Grandma Mazur to funeral viewings, being bested one too many times by her only fugitive (a "little person" computer geek), and struggling with her feelings for vice cop and sometime lover, Joe Morelli, Stephanie hunts for Fred. The only clue is a roll of pictures found in his desk - of human body parts in a garbage bag.

Evanovich keeps the antics and action jumping without overdoing her dry humor or losing sight of her crisp, mysterious plot.

Most of her characters will be familiar from earlier books ("One For the Money," Two For the Dough," "Three to Get Deadly," "Four to Score"), but this is no problem for new readers.

5 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining.......2007-04-22

This was the first book I read (well, listened to) by Janet Evanovich, and more will follow. I think I got a different female reader (C.J. something?), but the voice fitted the characters very well. I laughed out loud quite a few times. ( "stick a fork in me, I'm done!") and as a bonus there was an interview with the author at the end.

5 out of 5 stars High Five -- the fun's still alive!.......2007-03-28

I've been giggling my way through the Stephanie Plum series of mysteries, and while I've enjoyed each one (and had to explain many times to my husband what I was laughing at), I started to find with the third and fourth books that maybe I was getting a little tired of the series. They started to seem the same, with the characters all stalled where they were in the previous book.

But I see that they are in fact growing and evolving, sometimes in surprising ways! Lula is really getting into her some-time role as bounty hunter's assistant (which gets her out of the bail bond office, where she files). Grandma Mazur is crazy as ever, but has added to her arsenal. Sparks fly between Stephanie and Ranger (and Stephanie and Morelli, which makes things even more interesting). And most importantly, Stephanie seems to be starting to get the hang of this bounty hunter thing. I wasn't sure I could stomach 11(+?) books of her bumbling around all the time.

I don't think I need to worry. This book was a rollicking good time: fun characters, decent plot, snappy dialogue, and much craziness. Sometimes you just need something fun to read. I'm glad I have at least six more of these books to supply that need!

Organizational guru Ken Blanchard has long had a knack for writing management books that are easy and fun to read (The One Minute Manager, plus 11 other bestsellers). Now, in his latest, he becomes (with the help of three coauthors) something of a novelist, relating the saga of the Riverbend Warriors, a come-from-behind boys' hockey team, to teach a broader lesson about the importance of, and the key dynamics behind, good teamwork in organizations of every sort.

High Five! starts with otherwise exemplary exec Alan Foster losing his job because--you guessed it--he isn't a team player. Unemployed, bored, and demoralized, he decides to coach his fifth-grade son's failing hockey team into better shape. But it's not until he enlists the help of Miss Weatherby, an aging African-American retired teacher and champion girls' basketball coach that things really start to turn around. As we follow the struggle of the increasingly well-oiled Warriors machine as they drill, strategize, and bond their way through the season, we learn some of the fundamental lessons of what makes good teams--and good team-building by coaches and managers. Among them are "repeated reward and repetition," the guiding notion that "none of us is as smart as all of us," and four key traits that shall here remain undisclosed (hint: their acronym spells PUCK).

As fiction goes, don't expect high literature here. But to its credit, the book's ending isn't 100 percent happy, either. If you worry that the aged but whip-smart Weatherby might die at the end, don't--instead, she becomes perhaps the world's first octogenarian, black female management consultant. As books on teamwork go, Blanchard's latest is on the lighter side, but it still packs a fair share of commonsense wisdom when it comes to putting together, motivating, and sustaining work teams worthy of the Stanley Cup. And it may even have inaugurated a new fiction genre: the organizational tearjerker. --Timothy Murphy

Book Description

High Five! combines the spellbinding charm of a timeless parable with cutting-edge information about why teams are important and what individuals and organizations can do to build successful ones.

Through the story of Alan Foster, a workplace one-man band, High Five! identifies the four key ingredients of winning teams. Although Alan is an effective producer, he is unwilling to share the spotlight by partnering on projects and is fired because, as his boss puts it, "Alan, we need good producers who are good team players, too." It is a bitter pill for him to swallow.

While mulling over his disappointment, he takes his son to his grade-five hockey practice, where it is clear that his son's team, the Riverbend Warriors, knows nothing about teamwork, either. When the team's two overworked coaches learn of Alan's plight, they persuade him to join their ranks, and he finds himself charged with teaching himself and the players the meaning of teamwork. With the help of a woman friend-a former girls' basketball coach who has "won more high school basketball championships than anyone"-Alan and the Warriors learn the magic of teamwork and that "none of us is as smart as all of us."

With its simple style and easy-to-follow techniques, High Five! is a must-read for anyone seeking to learn the value and power of teamwork.

5 out of 5 stars Guidance for managers, educators, and students alike!.......2007-06-30

Book written to be easily read by adults and students. Love the context and the teamwork tips that have been incorporated. Read with your coworkers, or with your class of students when wanting to build teamwork skills.

4 out of 5 stars Wow, what a book!.......2005-04-13

While I have read other Ken Blanchard books, this one truly got my attention and was wonderful. As a student collegiate athelte myself, Blanchard and Bowle's book was easy reading and very easy for me to connect with based on my own experiences. The book allows one to follow a main character that starts off by being fired from his job, then gets involved coaching a young hockey team and calls on a coach he remembers from his school days to assist and turn the team around. With the assistance of this "coach" the main character begins to understand what it takes to make a successful team. He realizes the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and building team pride. This is a book that you can't put down, it can be read quickly and easily and I do feel everyone would be able to associate with parts of the book. Blanchard and Bowles do a great job at using the hockey team to teach the readers about team building yet simultaneously showing how these same principles can be applied to a work site. One is taken through the steps of team building and given examples time and time again on how these steps can be applied. There are very interesting twist throughout the book that keeps one's attention. I recommend this book to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Team work - A neccessity in any workplace.......2005-03-20

Team Work - Everyone knows the importance but yet more often than not, our own individuality gets in the way. How much more can be achieved if everyone behaves for the collective good of the group rather than for himself?

In this charming story, we follow the journey of Alan Foster, a top producer at work but very much a solo player. Because of this, he loses his job. Soon, he gets a job of coaching his son's ice hockey team, which interestingly, is bottom of the league due to it's lousy teamwork. Through a series of practice sessions and with the help of a former girl's basketball coach, Alan sees the problem with the hockey team and in the process realises his previously same problematic behaviour at work. As with all fairy tales, the team undergoes a transformation after they finally manage to get their act together. As an icing on the cake, Alan somehow also gets invited back to his former company to give a speech on teamwork! Did he finally return to his former company to work? Read the book to find out but of course, do not forget about the main lesons on teamwork! As the saying goes, "None of us is as smart as all of us."

Recommendation: Read this and start working on your team immediately! No point paying so much money to consultants. Get the soft cover version or try to borrow from the library if you are really low on budget. :)

1 out of 5 stars For the simple minded only - and not in a good way.......2005-01-05

This book is a utopian, unrealistic, poorly thought-out, infantile piece of trash. It's an insult to the intelligence of any adult who reads it. Written at a third grade level with 16-point type, this book's contents would be better suited to a coloring book. The philosophy it presents a real no-brainer, and if you need to read this to learn these principles, you have bigger problems to worry about. The "story" is just that, a "story" - there isn't an ounce of truth or realism to it, so just file this book under "office fairy tales". Believe it or not, I'm not a pessimist, I love books, and I'm totally into "self/professional improvement" topics. But do not waste your time or money on this silly book.

5 out of 5 stars Motivating quick read.......2004-02-24

This is a great book to share with your team members to inspire them and to help them learn how to work together more effectively. It's easy to read and will lead to great conversations.

5 out of 5 stars Janet Evanoviches Complete Collection.......2006-11-12

In the last two months I have bought and read all of Janets Books and WOW I can't wait till June when she has another book coming out. I have truly LOVED each and every one of them From the Plum Series, Full Series, Motor mouth and her First rereleased novels. I only wish she had more out. They are books so packed full of adventure, comedy its something I could reread again.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2006-10-06

These books had me laughing out loud. True, some of Stephanie's exploits are hard to believe, but that is what makes them so funny. Would like to start and see the characters grow a little bit, though.

I should have recieved a return for the money that I spent on delivery. I paid to have the books delivered in two buisness days and recieved them in a week and half. Not so fast it doesn't end there. I had to be home to sign because of an address mistake (also not my fault). I then hurried to open the box full of anticipation, only to find another set of books 6,7,&8. Which I had already recieved on time just days before. I read the invoice it was right, but the contents of the box were way off Once I returned the books the new ones came rather quickly. I still was left with a bitter taste having spent money to have them delivered faster.

Look, mision 5 isn't really a take over the world book, but atleast Lori dumps Ben. I have read books 1-5 ( trying to get 6) and I don't think it's the best book in the series, but if you love spy high like me READ IT!

5 out of 5 stars To answer questions and Review.......2006-05-02

For questions about blood relations and soul stealer the answer is you want blood relations. There are two series. Soul stealer is the one for series two blood relations is number one.

This boook is not a very TAKE OVER THE WORLD book. It's more of a family book and focus' alot more on ben. Not to say skip this book and go to number 6 (wich is out of print in the us) but read it still for its still a great book just not that much of a take over the world type book.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!.......2007-05-13

I would tell anyone with a fussy baby to read this book. From cover to cover Dr. Sears nailed the definition of a "high-needs" baby. I felt as if he wrote the book about me and my baby. It was so encouraging to know that there wasn't anything "wrong" with my baby or with the feelings I had about her being so fussy-which is a big deal to parents of a high-needs child; most people just don't "get it". I still (my baby is now 9 months) pull this book out when we are going through a rough patch; it's very reasurring to me and reminds me that I am doing the right things for my baby.

3 out of 5 stars The Opposite of Reassuring.......2007-04-21

My daughter was "colicky" for exactly 4 months and 9 days. Yes, you may not believe it when people say stuff like that, but it literally disappeared overnight. During these 4 months I was tired, stressed out, and confused as to why she was so unhappy all of the time.

Unfortunately, "The Fussy Baby Book" was the first book I read to try and find some answers and help. I couldn't even finish the book because by three-quarters of the way through I felt so guilty that my instincts seemed to differ so much from what the Sears' were describing. I needed a book that would tell me that this was just a phase that would eventually pass and I would get through it a stronger person, but instead I was told that my "high needs" baby was always going to be this way and I better learn to deal with it. Talk about a feeling of hopelessness!

There is a lot of good information in the book as well, which is why I gave it 3 stars, but most of that information I found during internet searches before I ever bought the book anyway. The overall feelings of guilt and hopelessness that I got from this book stuck with me a lot longer than any of it's good information did.

If you read this book and do not find it to be the answer, please be sure to check out these books:
1) "Your Fussy Baby" by Marc Weissbluth (Scattered writing, repeats himself a lot, and not so good as a reference, but he's really onto something with his sleep research and it will probably make you feel better about your overall situation because you will probably be able to relate to a lot of what he says - and a big point he makes is IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT AND THIS WILL END, which is definitely what I needed to hear after reading "The Fussy Baby Book"!)

2) "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Harvey Karp (I rented the DVD, which is probably the better way to go since you can actually watch him using his techniques. They really are amazing and although they don't always work with a colicky newborn unless you practice A LOT, the basics are good and we still use some of them to this day - and my daughter is 14 months old now!)

3) "Good Night, Sleep Tight" by Kim West (We didn't use this book until my daughter was 6 months old, but it was such a miracle that I wonder what would have happened if we tried out the "Sleep Lady" methods when she was going through her colicky phase! Definitely useful to have around as it is a quick read and it covers sleep issues from birth to age 5 and for the most part is adaptable to most parenting styles.)

Good luck!

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed.......2007-03-23

After reading this book I was a little disappointed. Yes it talks about how to work with a "high need child" The Book should probably been titled more like that. I have a fussy baby, but after reading the book, I realize he is not a "high need baby". The problem is due to earlier medical issues and now problems with finding a good formula and introducing foods. The chapter that they said would cover this topic was mostly centered around breastfeeding issues, and very little on formula fed babies and feeding solids. I know that once my son "feels" better than he is not fussy. I have taken him to the doctor and they have said he is just "colicky" and thats that. I am looking for other things to try and more solutions...turning to this book I had hoped to find it and was disappointed. It is not for a "fussy" baby its for a "high need Baby".

5 out of 5 stars Attachment Parenting Helps Colic Symptoms.......2007-01-19

I am writing this for my daughter who had a colicky baby even though she was totally breastfed. Life was miserable for months. Vicki purchased the Dr. Sears colic sling and tried all of the other suggestions. Within a week, peace was restored! We now have a happy baby and happy parents. Symptoms are almost gone. They were all so stressed and exhausted, they were in a vicious cycle...like a dog chasing it's tail! Thank God for William & Martha Sears!

5 out of 5 stars A Life Saver.......2007-01-09

Dr and Martha Sears saved my life. Gabriel is a high needs baby and without their affirmation that what I am doing to raise my son, I would be lost. I feel very comfortable with my parenting style now and will defend it to anyone. If you have a 'colicky' baby, please order and read this book. You'll be glad you did!!!!!

    Book Description

Frederick Wiseman is among America's foremost documentary filmmakers. The recipient of many awards, including three Emmys, Wiseman has made more than thirty feature-length documentaries during a career that has spanned five decades. Together, these films provide a fascinating chronicle of American social and institutional life. This book makes available for the first time transcriptions of five of Wiseman's most important films-- Titicut Follies, High School, Welfare, High School II, Public Housing--providing all of the dialogue as well as annotations about other aspects of the soundtracks such as music and ambient noise, and notes about editing and camera movement. These scene-by-scene transcripts enable readers to scrutinize the films' complex structural patterns, recurring motifs, editing regimes, and the unscripted dialogue that makes Wiseman's cinema a rich repository of American speech. Editor Barry Keith Grant's critical introduction discusses the importance of sound in Wiseman's documentaries. Liberally illustrated with images from the films, these meticulous transcriptions are accompanied by a bibliography and filmography.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent progressive training.......2006-11-16

The book is self-explanatory and depicts step-by-step the progress of the training. Nevertheless, it does also throw in some more variations of workouts so that the reader never gets bored with the same workout.

4 out of 5 stars Just trust it and follow the simple directions........2005-06-15

This book provides a logical progression of workouts and no gimmicks. As a previous reviewer noted, it is poorly edited--but not in a way that compromises comprehension.

You need a pull-up bar and a place to run 20, 40, 60, and 100 meter sprints to complete the work-outs. Other reviewers seem to be emphasizing that you need dumbells, but only their harder workouts call for weights (and they don't have to be dumbells, for example they could be milk jugs filled with water or sand).

Anyway, if you complete each of their three six-week schedules in succession, you will be very fit indeed.

4 out of 5 stars A good Way for Overall Fitness.......2002-09-15

This book gives a simple but effective way to get in shape, using calisthetics, weights, running and boxing to achieve it. It offers three levels of training, all basically the same format but with different intensity levels.
I have used this book several times over the last 2 years and enjoy the workouts. I break up the daily routines into 3 segments-the calisthetic part in the morning, the weights in the afternoon and the ad work in the evening. On running days, a similar pattern-running in the morning, weights at lunch and ab work in the evening. The routines don't take long that way but adds to fat-burning and muscle-building without exhaustion.
There are some negative points: they show exercises that they don't use and suggest exercises that they don't show.
But overall, I recommend this book to everyone who wants to get in shape without joining a gym.

3 out of 5 stars Good workout, poor book.......2002-04-09

This is one of those books that makes you wonder if anyone attempted to proof or edit it before publication. A couple of the exercises referred to in the workouts cannot be found in the exercise descriptions. Sometimes, the written descriptions of the exercises contradict the accompanying photographs. Don't get me wrong, the routines provide tough and credible workouts. But reading the book requires some interpretation and assumptions.

4 out of 5 stars Good All Around Book.......2001-12-14

I bought this book 2 years ago and still use the routines. This is a good book for beginner to intermediate trainers who want variety. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get in shape quickly and effectively.

5 out of 5 stars Eye opening and grounded in research.......2005-08-11

In Getting Results, all logical arguments are backed by solid research studies. What is more impressive, in most cases the raw numbers are included, allowing the reader to analyze the data themselves. The author recognizes the need to substantiate all of his claims with measurable facts. The book also includes real world examples of how each of the 5 steps to getting results works in practice. This book is a solid foundation from which any manager should be able to develop a business strategy that will truly make their business get results! What is better, the book could easily be completed in a week; arming you with the tools you need to combat poor performance in a timely manor.

      5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2004-10-14

Getting Results: Five Absolutes for High Performance is a must read for every manager. It is an excellent book and it gets every mamager ahead of the game. I got real understanding of performance monitoring amongst many other issues. Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Solid research for the serious manager.......2002-06-06

Business is about getting results. And "Getting results" gets down to business in a very direct fashion, using research and the authors' work with senior executives to construct basic guidelines for enabling and empowering managers and organizations. The survey results on the top twenty things a leader needs to do to be effective is probably worth the cost of the book. Some of the ideas and data went straight into my classroom. This might even work for many business faculty as a text for a basic graduate course in management or leadership.

The book lacked a little bit of the 'Tom Peters verve' that wins over large numbers of readers and gets books recognized by business magazines. But serious, thoughtful students of the science (and art) of business will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Top down management is still "Getting Results".......2002-04-11

This is a wonderful book. I would recommend it highly to anyone interested in reading how most of the successful companies are getting the job done. The survey and follow-up interviews from thousands of companies are well documented. It is easy to read and easy to ferret out solutions to specific problems that you may be experiencing in your business. What was striking to this reader was the general lack of the use of self-directed work teams in the businesses that were surveyed, and the continued reliance on the use of individual performance reviews and appraisals to motivate and direct employees. Successful businesses today are still following the basic rules of top down management that have been in place for many years. One must draw their own conclusion about whether this is the BEST way to do business. It certainly appears to be THE most popular and maybe the easy way to do business.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and Practical.......2002-01-05

This is one of the volumes which comprise the University of Michigan Business School Management Series. According to Longenecker and Simonetti, there are "five absolutes for high performance" and they examine each with both precision and eloquence. Few (if any) are original. The most effective managers probably practice them (and others) to achieve superior results. Whichever "absolutes" are embraced, they are obviously worthless without effective implementation in combination with both a determination and an ability to adjust to circumstances which can change quickly at any time. Here are the five absolutes:

#1 Get Everyone on the Same Page: Focus on the Purpose of Your Organization

#2 Prepare for Battle: Equip Your Operation with Tools, Talent, and Technology

#3 Stoke the Fire of Performance: Create a Climate for Results

#4 Build the Bridge on the Road to Results: Nurture Relationships with People

#5 Keep the Piano in Tune: Practice Continuous Renewal

No doubt each reader can easily rephrase each of the five or at least cluster several synonyms which suggest each absolute's key point. For example, #1 suggests the importance of agreement (or consensus) on which teamwork always depends whereas #5 suggests the importance of constant attention to the progress of any initiatives so that appropriate modifications can be made. The Japanese word "kaizen" means more than continuous renewal; those involved in such efforts must always be aware of maintaining proper balance (or proportion), especially when responding to a crisis of some kind.

For whom will this book be most valuable? The authors wrote it for "managers at all levels who are looking for ways to improve the performance not only of themselves but also of the people they are directly responsible for." I presume to suggest that this book would also be valuable to recent graduates who have only recently begun a business career. Every organization (including non-profits and family-owned businesses) needs to have an easily understood system (as well as sound strategies) by which to achieve the desired results. Longenecker and Simonetti provide such a system in this book. It remains for decision-makers, especially, "at all levels" to modify the system to their organization's specific needs and objectives. In the Afterword, Longenecker and Simonetti suggest how to "get the ball rolling" toward getting results: Always start with the end in mind, build a model of the absolutes to your organization to be effective as a leader, identify the practices that are most critical to your success, and develop the talents needed to implement and sustain the absolutes for high-performance. Heard all this before? Probably. Are you satisfied with the results you and your organization are now achieving? If not, here is a source to help clarify and assist your initiatives in weeks and months to come. Longenecker and Simonetti conclude their book and I conclude this review with an especially appropriate observation by Henry David Thoreau: "This time, like all time, is a great time, if we simply know what to do with it."

In response to the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), raising literacy levels in secondary schools has taken on a new urgency. Recognized literacy author, Elaine K. With new programs designed for adolescent learners, this update provides suggestions and developmental tools to effectively strengthen reading curriculum and instruction. Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A 'must have' reference........2006-12-14

The second updated edition of a classic re-focuses and enhances five basic concepts for raising reading achievement using seven cognitive strategies. Far from being the author's own regimen, Raising Reading Achievement in Middle and High Schools is based on twenty resreach-based reading strategies, incorporating these into a teacher's daily curriculum and routines and helping teachers with students who can't seem to learn to read. New programs designed for adolescent learners also provide updates to developmental tools, evaluation methods and programs, and more. A 'must have' reference.
