4 out of 5 stars inspiring work for leaders.......2004-12-03

This book really touched me, showed me how to become the best leader I could possibly be. It shows you the ropes to become better at leading people in the church.

4 out of 5 stars Encouraging Words for Those Who are in the Trenches!.......2003-10-08

The contributors are people who are widely recognized in ministry. Some are professors, others are pastors, and others still are consultants. The goal of this volume was to challenge leaders to become better at the art of leading. The authors are evangelicals representing a wide variety of views within evangelicalism. Barna is certainly known for his previous works on church growth and trends in America.

The uniqueness of this book is probably the honesty with which the contributors make their points. It felt more like a personal interview with many of them. They did a good job at getting to the heart of the matter. So often leadership books are trite or boring. Many authors of such books seem to know-it-all. I seldom felt that way while reading this book. The contributors seemed to have a genuine interest in helping the reader to become all that God wants him/her to be.

This book was fantastic on the subject matter covered. It explains thoroughly how to plant churches by the 3 basic models and how to help them grow, and how to effectively contribute to already existing churches, as well as full scale churches. Very essential information is presented for anyone who wants to futher the kingdom of God in any way.

    Book Description

At a time when our thirst for spiritual guidance has never been greater, Marsha Sinetar has located an oasis of hard-won wisdom that is as close as the neighbors next door. In The Mentor's Spirit, Marsha Sinetar shows readers a way to use our inborn "spiritual intelligence" to see the world and everything in it as a potential mentor--a life-affirming source of guidance and inspiration. True mentors are "artists of encouragement" who help us discover what is unique about our calling in life and help us pursue it. These spiritual guides are all around us, waiting to give generously: in children, in nature, in silence, in the lives of historical and contemporary leaders. Sinetar points the way to remain open to them and let them take us to a life enriched by challenges and cooperation.

This book translates well to educators, people in business, or those who are looking to improve their relationships. Her ideas about mentoring can make communication clearer and leaders emerge. Another book that I recommend is "He Never Called Again".
These two books are highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Blew me away! Perfect for the road.......2003-06-25

I wasn't expecting much from this tape. The book hadn't impressed me very much and I was thinking, "same old..."
However, as I listened I realized that Sinetar really has uncovered new ways to view mentoring. She distinguishes mentoring spirit from mentors in a unique, compelling way. Think of light flowing through a pane of glass. We care about the light -- not the glass. Similarly, the mentor is only a transmitter. What we want is the spirit transmitted by the mentor.

From this perspective, any person, group or even physical object can be a mentor - anything that embodies a spirit that offers us insight, understanding or support. John Muir, for instance, chose nature as a mentor to escape a horrendous family situation. And she never met the artist Ben Shahn, but she learned from his artwork. I can relate: I learned from Cynthia Cooper's book She's Got Game (which I also reviewed) -- and I've never held a basketball.

Most important, our own silence helps us grow and any meditation, quiet time or sabbatical can enrich us the way a mentor might.

There are many other gems on this tape and I plan to listen again...and again. Perhaps most interesting is the glimpse we get into Sinetar's own life and business. We learn that she regularly takes sabbaticals lasting several months -- and once a week she won't work at all. She no longer attends corporate dinners in the evening, although it's normally considered part of the consultant's job.

Sinetar recognizes that people have to be careful as they operate within an organization, and I think she underestimates the dfificulty of carving out space in a structured hierarchy. However, I have met folks who swim with ease in the corporate sea, and those will probably resonate even more, as Sinetar gracefully combines spirituality, personal growth and business systems.

I was reminded of Carolyn Myss: Despite widely divergent styles and content, both authors create and integrate.
Sinretar is far more accessible than Myss and her spiritual challenge is more of a gentle hill than an icy mountain. But don't expect Sinetar to offer a cake walk. One of the best parts of the book compares Olympic level goals with more mundane, amateur achievements, and she cites Neil Postman's wonderful book about our entertainment culture.
We want everything to be like television: no effort, no preparation and pleasantly entertaining, she says. As a former college professor, I have to agree: I've heard a college senior say, "I like this text because it has a lot of pictures."

Heading for a vacation trip? Pack this one in the car and prepare to come back refreshed and, quite possibly, changed.

4 out of 5 stars A different definition of mentoring.......2003-02-26

Mentoring is now a new concept that becomes increasingly popular in companies, government agencies, schools and volunteering organizations. Sietar unfolds a way to use our inborn "spiritual intelligence" to see the world and everything in it as a potential mentor - not only are humans beings our mentors, but books, articles, songs, nature and silence as well. Mentors are the artists of encouragement.

A must have book for spiritual individuals.

3 out of 5 stars Mentors Must Be Choosy.......2001-08-11

I have benefitted greatly from much of Sinetar's work, but this book takes too glib an approach to the mentoring of those working for corporations and organizations, some of which, no matter how excellent their business technique, are responsible for great harm to our society. Sinetar needs to note this and make some judgments about authentic business practice for the common good and that which is predatory, no matter how "enlightened." The mentoring process itself should be rigorously self-critical in a way which opens the door for individuals to confront their own role in the empowerment of businesses and organizations, for good or for ill. In this way the social transformation now needed may be accelerated rather than hindered by businesses, organizations, and those who work for them. I'm not hearing that in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not all that accessible a concept.......1999-07-19

I found the concepts of this book hard to follow, although Sinetar writes well enough. Like her "Do What You Love...", it was somewhat abstract and did not offer enough pragmatism for my taste. However, there were "golden" moments in the book, especially when she describes actual events and people who embody her definition of a "Mentor's Spirit". A book to be read AND discussed with others. A book for those who aspire to be a different sort of mentor and are ready to take on the awesome responsibilty Sinetar seems to imply.

    Book Description

Western culture has made a cult of success, and the church has accepted the larger culture's definition, focusing on success as growth in membership and budget, rather growth in faithfulness as disciples of Jesus. When we do not measure up, we become discouraged, disillusioned, and perhaps even envious.

Paul Moots offers a welcome antidote: a vision for the ministry of encouragement. Based on his study of the book of Acts, Moots has identified five incidents from the ministry of Barnabas, an easily overlooked character, that provide a starting point to explore encouragement and how it can work in a congregation. Moots then examines five components of this ministry: partnership, hospitality, courage, reconciliation, and authenticity.

Moots details numerous examples to show how the ministry of encouragement offers a workable, effective pattern for church leadership. "I am convinced," he writes, "that accepting Barnabas as my model has changed my ministry for the better and that Barnabas's example can benefit any pastor and congregation who take his lessons seriously."

Barnabas and his ministry of encouragement offer us a focus for the vital, messy, and exhilarating work required of us as faith communities.

    5 out of 5 stars A Ministry of Encouragement.......2005-12-17

It is refreshing to read a book about ministry that takes a figure from the Early Church as a role model for the church of today. United Methodist pastor Paul Moots' inspiration for this new offering from the Alban Institute is Barnabas, the "son of encouragement" of the Book of Acts. In dexterous strokes, Moots demonstrates how five moments in the ministry of Barnabas can motivate the leadership of the twenty-first century church.

Moots characterizes The Ministry of Encouragement as "...the art of leading and supporting others in the discovery of their own spiritual gifts and call to discipleship." (Page 2). The essential word in his definition is "art" which stands where many books on ministry offer a "technique" or "plan" or "program." Moots indicates that if ministry is not artistry, then we are only technicians and poor ones at that. Moots sees this art of leading as a gift from God available to both those who are ordained and those who are not, a gift that the recipient can foster. How refreshing, too, that this art is "other" oriented; it is not so much what ministers can do for themselves as what their ministry can do for others.

The book is packed with bon mots and profound principles lived practically in local congregations, such as Moots' current call, First United Methodist of Mount Sterling, Ohio. For instance, "Well-controlled ministries are often stagnant ministries that meet our goals, not necessary God's." (Page 27). Even more, the book is also suffused with prayer. Indeed, Moots' model for a prayer-led church is a compelling Biblical alternative to recent models that are, shall we say, driven instead of led. As Moots says, "Relinquishing a position of control to allow someone else to fulfill his or her ministry is the act of a true leader..." (Page 30)

Dare I quote Moots at his best? Here he is: "Although the majority of contemporary examples I use are based on incidents in churches where I have served or am serving, I cannot claim to be an untainted exemplar of the ministry of encouragement. I am still trying to shed the training I received in the CEO style of ministry from seminary and the pastors of my youth, and I often have to rediscipline and rededicate myself to Barnabas' way." (Page xvii).

The "Reflections" at the end of each chapter are ideal for the reader to make Moots' insights his or her own. They would also serve well in a small group study, for a church board longing for a more excellent way, or as a leadership retreat at the start of a new church year. Our officers had a retreat based on this book several years ago; I believe that time spent reflecting upon and applying the insights in this book could prove to be transformational for your faith, too!

5 out of 5 stars Never is heard a discouraging word..........2004-08-06

While the clergy person is the primary audience for this text, Robert Reber says in his foreword that this is a book that will benefit all people who live together in community as a congregation, for all are called to share in the work of ministry. I agree; many will find a refreshing spirit in Paul Moots' idea of the ministry of encouragement, the ministry of affirming gifts of each other, and sharing these talents in community.

So, just who is Barnabas? Barnabas is a relatively minor character in the book of the Acts of the Apostles (indeed, almost everyone pales into minor character-hood by comparison with Peter and Paul). Barnabas was one who encouraged others with their ministries and gifts, who did not react out of jealousy (why is my church not the biggest or best?) or personal ambition, but rather for the good of the community. Moots highlights five particular points in the story of Acts, places that have becoming meaningful to him not only in his study, but in his preaching through the texts.

Moots highlights several aspects - the first is working together in partnership, which he characterizes as 'standing with and standing aside'. (Acts 11.25-26) It was during this ministry that disciples were first called Christians. The second is a ministry of hospitality (Acts 9.26-27), sharing space, activity and spirit with those who are different. The third is ministry of courage (Acts 14.19-20) - few of us in the Western world need fear persecution for being Christian, but that is not to say that ministry does not require risk. The fourth is a ministry of reconciliation (Acts 15.37-39) - what happens when we fail, or fail to live up to expectations? Moots recounting the split between Paul and Mark, easily missed in the Acts, and their eventual reconciliation, is particularly meaningful to me, as my own church still bears a grudge against me. The final piece from Acts (4.36-37 and 11.23-24) looks at issues of authenticity in ministry - how do we know that what we are doing is what God wants us to do?

Moots points out in various places that this book is not a blueprint or a roadmap - all churches and congregations will be different, so the broad principles laid out here will be applied in different ways with differing levels of effectiveness. However, this is a solid, spiritual, biblically-based idea for drawing all people together in the service of God in God's community. The ministry is not the exclusive province of those of us ordained, but rather belongs to all the people.

Moots provides questions for individual reflection and group discussion at the conclusion of each chapter. This would make a wonderful Lenten study for a church or adult study group. Moots redefines success as not being mega-church, numbers-oriented growth and impact, but rather as deepening spirituality and faithfulness in the congregation, whatever its size, to each other and the vocation to which it is called.

    This is a wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Great New Resource - Highly Recommend!!.......2004-07-13

If you are searching for a way to rejuvenate your congregation into becoming a more "encouraging" ministry, or simply want your members to discover the ways in which they can be united, then Moots' "Becoming Barnabas" will be both a treasure and a resource. Moots uniquely uses Barnabas "The Encourager" as a model for Christians today. Moots does an outstanding job of blending practical stories (some that every churchgoer will recognize) with scriptural references. Particularly for smaller congregations, and focused toward congregational leaders (though everyone can benefit), "Becoming Barnabas" is a refreshing look at the church today and a promising glimpse of what it can be in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Leadership qualities needed for changes in the world of work.......1999-11-13

Technology and increasing globalisation are challenging many of our preconceptions about the world of work. This collection consists of a selection of Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (RSA) lectures by leading practitioners and academics. Relating to work, corporate change, work ethics and leadership, they explore the changes that are taking place, present what different organisations who blazed the trail are learning, and analyse the leadership qualities needed to steer us through these changes. In featuring organisations in a variety of sectors, they provide an overview of key factors affecting the individual within the world of work. They also demonstrate how leaders can manage these factors to bring longer-lasting rewards both for the company and the individual with better principles and new models of both ethical and productive best practice.

The book begins by exploring the issues relating to the individual in today's working environment, the implications of working on one's own and changing work cultures. In Redefining Work, American author William Bridges suggests that it no longer makes sense to think in such terms of `having a job'. The trend is towards paying for output, which could have positive implications for the disabled, against whom fixed job structures too often discriminate. Professor Cary Cooper of the Manchester School of Management, a leading expert on stress management, explores the psychological implications of changing work patterns, and the effects on both the individual and family life. Frances Cairncross from The Economist describes the negative and positive changes resulting from the technological revolution. `The death of distance' brings new opportunities for companies and individuals to access the global marketplace, whilst the vastly reduced cost of transporting ideas and services implies a greater emphasis on the value of knowledge.

David Logan from the Corporate Citizenship Company examines how, in the age of globalisation, transnational companies with headcounts larger than some countries' populations exert an increasing influence on states and how they address issues of corporate responsibility. Meanwhile, governments are taking on a new role in society of setting social and environmental targets for business, then monitoring and measuring its performance against them. Sheena Carmichael of PricewaterhouseCoopers explains how ethical audits can help companies not only to act more ethically but also improve productivity.

Richard Wells, a former Chief Constable of South Yorkshire, explains how in the police force quantitative, statistically-judged success in detecting crimes can lead to the potential for wrong and the undermining of public confidence. He describes ways in which organisations can take a more ethical, democratic approach, where cultural changes introducing trust, openness and innovation will result in real, qualitative success. An ethical approach to employees is also advocated by Sir Stuart Hampson, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, who illustrates how the way in which the partnership genuinely involves its staff-its `partners'-has been a major contributor to its long-term success.

In `Tomorrow's Company-A Journey of Discovery', Nick Obolensky, chief executive of Tomorrow's Company Enterprises, explains how ten diverse companies were able to progress along the path to the inclusive approach to business. The experience of two of the companies, Birmingham Midshires Building Society and Osborne Clarke Solicitors, are described in the two responding lectures which follow. According to Mike Jackson, former chief executive of Birmingham Midshires, strong leadership is the glue that holds everything together.

The book concludes with six views on the leadership of organisations and the question of whether leadership can be taught. In the first of these Professor Gareth Jones of the Henley Management College analyses the Western concept of leadership in the historical context of rational and moral thought, explaining the evolution of leadership theories and exploring key leadership qualities. In the two responding lectures Hilary Cropper of the F.I. Group plc emphasizes how leaders must galvanize staff with a unifying purpose and a collective desire to succeed; while Helen Taylor Thompson of Mildmay Hospital exemplifies the personal leadership qualities of persuasion, motivation and energetic individuality in her description of how she ensured that Mildmay survived and grew to be a world leader in its field.

Still on leadership, Lieutenant-General Jack Deverell, Deputy Commander-in-Chief, Land Command, emphasizes the importance of such intangible concepts as duty, service, example and motivation. He concludes that these qualities, which lie at the heart of effective leadership, are difficult and sometimes impossible to teach. Responding to General Deverell's lecture, Philip Hodgson of the Ashridge Management College develops the theme of training and learning further, putting forward the theory that strong leadership involves `difficult learning'-meeting difficult challenges, facing up to hard lessons and tackling difficult tasks and situations that one would prefer to avoid. Lastly, Olympic swimming gold medallist Adrian Moorhouse, adds his own interpretations and insight, drawn from the world of sport.
