5 out of 5 stars Log Cabin Dreams.......2004-10-31

We often romanticize about the small cabin in the woods, by the lake, or atop a mountain- the home that is in tune with nature. ~Robbin Obomsawin

The first time I saw a log cabin it was love at first sight. One of my best gal friends from college is always dreaming of having her brother build her a log cabin. I'm dreaming of visiting her and sipping hot chocolate by a fireplace and catching up on her travels to Russia. The wish to live in a log cabin may be inspired by a romantic weekend or a trip to a friend's house in the woods.

In "Log Cabin Classics" old-world cabins are inspired by nostalgic moments, a desire to be in harmony with nature and local materials.

You will find information on Cabin Fever, Building Small Cabins, Second Homes, Planning Strategies, Risks and Problems, Budgeting and Construction Contracts, Reclaiming Wood and Building with Nature.

The author, Robbin Obomsawin is the construction manager and general contractor for Beaver Creek Log Homes. She has an in-depth knowledge of conventional construction and lives in Westdale, New York.

Robbin displays not only a intricate knowledge of log cabin construction, she is a deft writer who displays a true love of natural surroundings and nature escapes.

If you are looking for decorating ideas, there are quite a few and full-color pictures display various settings. There are house plans complete with ideas for wraparound kitchens and bedroom lofts. I love the cozy bedrooms and rocking chairs placed near fireplaces.

Bonus: You can also order blueprints from Beaver Creek Log Homes. There is also a list of resources to help you plan your building project.

While no one book will make you an expert builder this book will show you that you can build your own Log Home. Roger Hard has written an easy to understand How To Guide with topics like tools needed, chain saw mills even alternative power sources. I especially liked the tree species map of the US and Canada and the insulation value chart of the different species of wood.
Along with other books, videos, web sites, message boards, talking with Log Home owners and dealers this book should be apart of your strategy.

Book Description

Proving that less is more, The Cabin takes this idyllic retreat from mind's eye to reality -- with striking photographs and considerable charm. Simple, even primitive at times, the cabin is not just a roof over our heads, but a treasury of feelings, sensations, and memories. Readers who have no cabin memories very likely have cabin dreams. The Cabin looks at an amazing array of design styles and materials -- from sticks and stones to sheet metal and glass. The book invites readers to think of every cabin as unique, and less a shelter than a way of life. "The cabin is our heart's retreat," write the authors; and what a wonderful place to escape to! 37 inspirational cabins from all over the country are featured with nearly 250 photographs and 50 illustrations, detailed descriptions, site plans, and floor plans.

4 out of 5 stars designing my cabin.......2007-06-27

I bought this book along with a bunch of others when I bought a country home. I liked this one the best-no Architectural Digest rich people cabins that none of us can afford (or even want). This book limits the size of the cabins to a modest 1200 feet or so and focuses on the creativity of the owners. Really interesting uses of space. I have given it as a gift many times and everyone has really liked it

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2007-06-03

This is a great book with many terrific photos that will fuel your imagination and inspiration for a future small home which, in my opinion is the wave of the near future. Less is more, and this book shows you how beautiful that can be. I would recommend you leave this book on the coffee table, people always pick it up and enjoy flipping through it.

5 out of 5 stars food for thought.......2006-09-06

In a nutshell, a beautiful book with gorgeous photos and plenty of ideas. In the few days that I've had it, its been used frequently to clarify and illustrate our own ideas about the cabin that we're planning. As far as I'm concerned it has paid for itself already.

5 out of 5 stars Down with McMansions.......2006-07-10

God, this book is so lushly illustrated with cozy spaces and intimate hideaways that you just want to scramble for the hills after one read-through. All the houses in it are deliciously comfy and cozy, illustrating the forgotten principle of 'just enough', all look just big enough,a nd all look terribly inviting and tempting. This book is cabin porn, basically.

5 out of 5 stars Invites repeated browsing.......2006-02-22

I love this book. I keep going back to it for ideas for building a summer sleeping structure for my large back yard. For people who love the outdoors and are drawn to the concept of living structures which invite the outdoors inside and vice versa, this book is full of inspiration. There is something for everyone in this book and you would be hard pressed not to find at least one structure in this book which has you itching to pick up a hammer and a saw.

Book Description

Nothing captures the romance of country life quite like a log cabin does — trees cut from the thick woods of the wilderness; hewn by hand into squared-off logs; then stacked to create a sturdy shelter, a warm hearth, a welcoming home. Author Charles McRaven knows these traditional structures from the inside out, and from the outside in. He restored his first log house in 1946, at the age of eleven. Since then he has built and restored hewn-log houses all over the country, and is considered the nation’s foremost authority on the topic.

McRaven covers everything from hewing the first log to laying the last chimney stone. Readers will first learn about the history and background of these houses. McRaven then dives deep into describing the details of hewn-log construction, beginning with site selection all the way through to the finishing steps such as plumbing and utilities. Clear, how-to line illustrations accompany the text throughout. A fullcolor gallery of finished structures shows that, durable though they are, hewn-log houses are also warm, inviting, and artful homes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read as well as Instructional Work.......2006-12-12

The reviewer entitled "hk537" must live on a different planet, (or maybe just jealous and insecure). Not only is McRaven's knowledge of building and construction with both stone and wood exemplary, but in addition, he adds his own touches of humor in the manner of old yarn storytelling. He also includes a large amount of historical information which I found to be endlessly fascinating. If someone were looking for an instructional book with "just the hard facts", be aware that this author's books go way beyond that. A wonderful, educational, and enjoyable read!

5 out of 5 stars Learn how to replace rotten logs, notch logs, use vintage logs, or handle floor joists in this step-by-step guide.......2005-10-12

The hewn-log house represents early American architecture - and author Charles McRaven has been building and restoring these houses for sixty years: he's in the perfect position to illustrate each step of the process, from building from scratch to repairs. Learn how to replace rotten logs, notch logs, use vintage logs, or handle floor joists in this step-by-step guide, loaded with black and white photos.

2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!!.......2005-06-09

This book is a poor attempt. I've read pamphlets with more usable information in them. The section on Hewing is a joke, as is most all the rest of this book. Very few hints and techniques in this book, which was very disappointing. Lots of self pumping-up, not no real instruction detail. Stick to writing books about stone, Mr. McRaven and give the timber world a sigh of relief.

      Book Description

With its overhanging eaves, exposed rafters, fieldstone verandas, open floor plans, and fine woodwork, the bungalow has become a quintessential model of American architecture. A hybrid import from abroad over a century ago, its suitability for country living quickly led to its adoption throughout the United States. However, many modern homes lack the jaunty, distinctive style and attention to detail that characterize older bungalows and mountain houses. This unrivalled classic reveals the designs of thirty-two American architects, including descriptions of materials, siting, sanitation, color, furnishings, and an entire chapter devoted to camps, lodges, and log cabins. More than a lovely expression of old-fashioned charm, these plans can easily be adapted to create a modern vacation home or country cottage.

Here you'll meet authentic pioneers who will sing ancient ballads, spin yarns about Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone and Thomas Jefferson, tell spell-binding tales of bear hunting with moonshine and give you advise on buying a mule. You'll visit a general store, eat ash cake, hear remedies and superstitions and even get romantic advice.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Log this book as a good one.......2005-01-02

The back of the book includes a witty epigraph by none other than Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln notes "For those of you who like this kind of a book, this is that kind of book you will like." The tautology rings true! What kind of people might like this book? If you're interested in the history of log cabins, Erbsen provides an interesting historical context for these types of buildings. He cites current authorities in vernacular architecture and even critiques some of the myths of the log cabins. He replaces the inaccurate ideas about log cabins with good information about the cultural context that supported these constructions. There is good information about cabin-raisings, ways that musicians "fiddled up a cabin," and the various construction techniques used in a range of buildings. The book provides special attention to ways in which log buildings continue to provide important themes within old-time fiddle tunes, ballads, and bluegrass music. The book includes the words and music to a number of ballads and folksongs, and readers will also appreciate the way that Erbsen included mountaineers' proverbs, folk-speech, and even recipes. I also like the presentations of clever tall tales, legends, and other narratives that pertain to the life of those who lived in these types of houses. Even though Lincoln wasn't born in a log cabin that he built with his own two hands, the book does provide a good understanding of the types of cabins that Lincoln actually lived in. It even includes some of the actual ballads that he sung as a youngster. As Lincoln stated, this book will appeal to people who like this kind of book: namely, those with an interest in the folklore and history of rural America.

4 out of 5 stars Sounds and lives of Pioneers.......2002-11-04

As one would expect from a Mel Bay book, Log Cabin Pioneers includes easy playing music for the amateur guitarist or pianist, or for not difficult playing on any treble clef instrument. Captured in less than a dozen measures, the accessible melodies have simple keys and no chord more difficult than a 7th. Several verse of lyrics accompany these songs. However, such music is just the songs of "Stories, Songs & Sayings." The text is strewn with colorful aphorisms from the pioneer period. Examples are "Better a lame donkey than no horse" from 1854 and the undated bit of meteorological advice, "don't stand in the sun if you have butter on your head." The stories come in two varieties. We get homesteaders' tales, like "The Shrinking Britches" and a swindle worthy of Huckleberry Finn, "What has 4 Eyes, 3 Heads, and 2 Tails?" But, we also get the stories of the songs and pioneers themselves. The stories of the people cover their fashion, building techniques and more - including methods to hide a still. Stories of the songs give the reader insight into the history and meaning behind "Darling Cory", "Mary of the Wild Moor" and more. All this material is arranged topically by section: Cabin History, Pioneer Construction, Log Cabin Music, Whiskey Making, Cabin Kids, Home & Cooking, Pioneer Beauty Secrets and Log Cabin Ghosts and Lore. More entertainment and information can be had in the pioneer slang glossary that defines such obscure archaisms as explatterate (to crush or mash) and "light and hitch" (come and visit).

5 out of 5 stars Enhanced with 143 vintage photos.......2002-02-06

In Log Cabin Pioneers: Stories, Songs & Sayings, author Wayne Erbsen takes the reading along on his personal journey of finding and restoring an historic log cabin. There the reader is treated to authentic pioneers yarns of such log cabine pioneer notables as Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone, as well as tales of bear hunting, moonshine, even advice on how to buy a mule! Then there are the songs sung by our pioneer forebears, and such pioneer staples as house raising, log hewing, husking bees, frontier remedies for ailments, superstitions, romantic advice, and an old-fashion barn dance. The entertaining and informative text is enhanced with 143 vintage photos, along with the words and music to nineteen pioneer era songs. Log Cabin Pioneers is a unique and wonderful addition to any personal, school, or community library American history collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really great stuff.......2002-01-31

I bought the book to help my 4th grader with a school project. I "censored" it a bit, as it does contain stories of moonshine, guns, and other such adult topics. But both my kids loved the funny stories and my daughter used a song from the book as a pioneer project. Everyone loved it, and the project was a snap. A really interesting and funny book.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome instructions & diagrams!.......2003-04-21

This book contains instructions for 12 log cabin variations, antique & contemporary. The diagrams, charts, and yardage requirements are as good as they get! There is even a black and white line drawing of each quilt so you can experiment with your own color combinations. Very well done, a nice book for a beginner or experienced quilter.
