Nice Volume-Somewhat brief.......2007-07-02
I found that this text was more an advanced tutorial than it was a standard textbook. The format was a little informal for my taste. Nonetheless, the Author was clearly knowledgeable, and the book provides a lot of necessary information. I was a little taken aback by how little advantage a knowledge of Autocad is in using the more advanced software
Excellent text but missing items.......2007-03-15
The text is very well written and explains the topics in more than adequate detail. However, there is supposed to be an accompanying CD with files that follow along with the text that would be helpful, but we never received the CD, not in the book nor a separate delivery. Aside from that, we are very happy with the information contained within the text itself.
2007 ADT Tutorial.......2007-03-13
I'm approximately one third of the way through the book. I've been using ACAD for approximately twenty years and I agree with the author that having some ACAD experience is helpful, perhaps essential in learning this software. I'm using it to teach myself and even though the book is excellent, nothing beats being able to ask someone a question when you're stuck. This is very complexe software and if you have a problem, you're left to your own devices. I come from a mechanical engineering background and don't know a soul familiar with ADT. The book is well written and illustrated but you have to read very closely to avoid errors in the exercises.

NOVICE TO INTERMEDIATE .......2006-09-12
Very good book for the price. Definitely the buy for someone who has some autocad background. However, I did find the book to be somewhat to broad in its examples. I think the author would have done much better if he had limited his scope of example to either residential or commercial. The residential examples were not very specific and were only understood if one read the commercial examples first. Being that I only design residential, it is a great resource in describing the different tools and commands available in the program.
A tremendous help.......2006-06-25
My firm recently upgraded from 2002 to 2006 and it's been an ordeal. We've decided to use the project navigator's full functionallity and this book has been a wonderfull reference for the methodology behind it. I'd recommend this book to anyone doing the same.
An excellent tutorial.......2006-04-13
As usual, Paul's latest Mastering ADT book is a must-have for anyone needing to learn how to use ADT in a real-world scenario. Rather than just another useless listing of commands and features, it is a process-oriented series of tutorials that walk users through example projects with plenty of coverage of the "why" as well as the "how to". As an ADT instructor and consultant, I recommend it to all of my students and customers.
MADT a must have.......2006-04-12
MADT 06 is over-the-top helpful. With consistent reading and follow through of exercises, we easily moved from, "What the heck is all this stuff? -- to, "I get it, I get it, I can't live without it." We found Mr. Aubin's tools and project examples very applicable and useful to real world application. Another great advantage of reading MADT is the author's explanation of out of the box material in the software. Most draftsmen are compelled to spend weeks re-configuring the software and tools to draw like they draw. Aubin helps explain this is not necessary. He's right. The author not only clearly explains how to use this complicated software but helps us understand that it is already equipped to save us time and money without spending endless man-hours making it draw with every color, line weight, block and tool that we've used the last 20 years.
Mastering is our Corporate Training Manual.......2006-04-12
We have a large installation of ADT at our company and Paul's books have always been step one in the training of our users. The book and tutorial guide you through difficult concepts and get you ready to start your own project. We don't start a project without this book. We recently used "Mastering" (and no traditional training) to create a library of custom multi-view blocks that scheduled all our doors, walls and spaces in a building that is one of the most complex in the world. Contrary to any detractors comments, we have found this book to be easy to use and valuable to our process.

Aubin's Mastering ADT very thorough and easy to follow.......2004-03-19
Paul's book, after working through the Comprehensive Tutorial by H. Edward Goldberg, is like reading Proust in English for an English as a first language speaker compared to reading Proust in French for an English as a first language speaker. The steps are small enough that a person who is new to the program can follow along without difficulty. Plus, Paul's accessibility is invaluable.
Great resource and learning tool.
The reviewer who said there must be a better book out there somewhere might consider writing one for the office in which he/she works so as to have one to recommend for new employees.
I, too, would be interested in reviewing the new attempt.
Help at Last for the CADaphobes!.......2004-03-19
I'm an architect who's worked with CAD for 10 years...got dragged into using it, literally kicking and screaming!! I needed 3D capabilities to stay competitive, but the thought of learning another CAD program struck terror in the very marrow of my bones! I took took hours and hours of classroom and on-line classes to try to learn ADT and VIZRender, and I feel like it was money up in smoke. Out of sheer desperation I bought Aubin's book, and have found it to be one of the....no, THE clearest, most straightforward CAD guide I've ever, ever, EVER read!!Starting with the basics, and guiding the reader through step-by-step tutorials in plain, non-technical language, Aubin has developed a guide that even a technophobe can clearly understand.
I'd give the book a full 5-star, but it's a little lacking in trouble shooting. If things don't work out the way they're supposed to, it would be helpful to have some suggestions on what might be wrong.
After only one day of working through the guide, I could design a simple building in 3-D. After a full week, the sunshine was pouring through the windows. Well worth the money.
Could have used an editor and some better examples........2004-02-11
After working with various versions of AutoCad for the last 7 years, this was my first introduction to Architectural Desktop. I have worked my way through this book over the last week. It is quite possibly the LEAST-well-written Cad book I have ever used. Paragraphs are repeated, steps are skipped over, words are missing in the middle of sentences.
The tutorials give you the false impression that you are accomplishing something, without teaching you how to apply the concepts to the actual projects you will be required to work on in the real world. One man in my office described the tutorials this way: "It's like 'This Old House', Bob takes the camera crew into the bathroom as Norm finishes caulking the tub. Bob turns to the camera and tells you that now you too can remodel your bathroom."
There has to be a better book out there on this program. I just don't know what it is. Don't spend your money on this, take your chances on some other book. Best of Luck.

When I have a question, I go to the Aubin book first. The help menu and the official Autodesk books never have as much of what I need.

I have worked with previous AutoCad versions along with Desktop 3.3 and this book made the transition from those programs to Desktop 2005 a lot easier. 2005 has so many shortcuts and components and this book gives step-by-step examples that really speed up the process. I recommend this book to anyone who is advancing to the new Desktop 2005 software.

If you're an architect that already knows AutoCAD well, this is a good book to transition into ADT. It covers the basic structure of ADT and setting up projects in step by step tutorials for both residential and commercial projects.
I also like the fact that this book is more about principals and concepts than commands and has a lot of tips for CAD managers. However, the tutorials are great for learning ADT and it's perfect for both users and CAD/Project managers.

I bought this book and also bought the privelege of reading it on-line because I normally live in America but am now in Brazil and I had it shipped to My home in America but I found that I was going to be in Brazil for a long while. On the read on-line privelege, I didn't get the info on the DVD so I was kind of stuck but I emailed the Author and he was very nice and put the DVD info on his sight for me so that I could download it and he was very very helpful. This book is outstanding for learning ADT from the ground up. I am a cronic studier and so I have bought many books on learning many things but I think this book is the best of all those that I have studied, not only because of the book itself but for the pleasantness of the Author.

I recently purchased Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2006, by Scott Onstott, and have already found it to be an invaluable resource in my transition from AutoCAD LT 2002 to Autodesk's Architectural Desktop 2006.
Admittedly; I still have not completely finished the book, yet it has already proven to be an essential tool to transition to Architectural Desktop 2006. Previously, the amount of information needed to reach drawing proficiency and remain productive at work has been the primary reason I have not upgraded my AutoCAD platform. It wasn't until I found this book and started the tutorials I gained the skills and confidence to upgrade to such a far superior program.
Without a doubt, one of the book's greatest strengths is its dual functionality. For example, when time permits I can sit down and follow along with the tutorials for an in depth learning experience similar to a classroom type lecture. At the same time, the book is a great reference tool for the times when deadlines are pending and production is essential.
I would give this book and excellent review and recommend it to others in my office.

I took a autocad class in college and this was not part of the program. I recently purchased the entire program for myself and wanted to learn this aspect of it. This was a great help, I found it easy to learn and a great reference tool until I got the hang of the program. Highly Recommended!
Mastering a Tough Subject.......2004-11-25
I almost didn't buy this book as I have had previous experience in both Viz and Architectural Desktop; but, the price was right and I figured what the heck, it'll give me something to do over the holidays.
I'm very glad that I made the plunge because this book made me realize how little I did know about a very tough subject, optimizing the ADT building model in order to produce very realistic renderings with reasonable file sizes and render times. In fact, the two chapters on models is a "must read" for anyone who wants to be able to render ADT models in either Viz or VizRender.
Since both authors are architects, this book centers on producing outstanding presentations using VizRender. Their lighting techniques (both interior and exterior) and their recommendations for tweaking materials and render settings provide a clear path towards that end. It would be difficult to read this book and not become an accomplished renderer. In addition to the easy to understand text, there are lots graphics and a whole section of colored plates that illustrate the desired rendering results for each chapter. Finally, there are plenty of bonus excercises and excerpts to expand and sharpen the newly learned skills.
This book is definitely a must for anyone who wants to be proficient in using VizRender with ADT and several copies should be on the library shelves of any firm or school using or teaching those products.
